I apologize if this isn’t the right spot to let things out because everyone of y’all have been doing so good in your journey and I caught the funk and really don’t want to spread it. I’m about a week out from surgery and yesterday I made dinner for the family for the first time. I’m still strictly liquid but thought I should help my wife with the boys (1 1/2 and 5). I made them one of my favorites because it’s my eldest favorite too , rotisserie chicken salad with all the goodness. I wanted to eat it so bad!! I thought about licking their food, and I wanted to cry. I pulled it together and we ate dinner together, then with their food and me with broth. I made them dinner again tonight, salmon Brussels sprouts and rice. I was not as strong as yesterday, I cried dishing their plates, I even put some salmon in my mouth and sucked on it (I spit it out). I had to go to my room and cry. also I realize that this past week I have not been keeping up on my happy pills because I used to take all my meds at once and simply can’t do that anymore. I appreciate this space to type, complain and share victories. 🤟🏾

It's best to get clearance from your doctor. That said.. my program suggests starting weight training 6 weeks out. 2xs a week and advance from there. No maxing out or pushing to muscle failure. Lift enough to feel a burn but stop if you feel any sharp pain, experience chest pressure, nausea or extreme shortness of breath. I haven't started weights yet myself but have been cleared to. I had hernia repair same time as RNY. So I'm pacing myself. I am easing into exercise with walking on my treadmill or outside, weather permitting. Also just started using my exercise bike today. 6 miles. I do cardio 5x a week but eventually I will shift that to concentrate more on strength training since I think we will benefit more from that in the long run. I used to drink an ACV drink daily before surgery to help control reflux and blood sugar levels. Apple cider vinegar is actually not acid once consumed. Instead, it has an alkaline effect on the body when taken internally. Post-surgery I will still pour it over a salad but no longer really feel I need it. As for loose skin, I still believe autophagy/fasting can repair cells and improve collagen production but that is no longer an option for me diet wise. I chose RNY and so will rely on my new tool and follow those guidelines. For now anyway. Good luck and stay strong.

May 2023 surgeries

I had gastric bypass 5/17 and I’m doing well. Walking 2-3miles every other day, drinking flavored water throughout the day to stay hydrated, took my first set of vitamins today (not bad), trying to eat slowly. So far i have eaten turkey burger, tuna with light mayo, pureed chili, yogurt, scrambled eggs with cheddar, protein drinks. 3 of my 6 incisions have begun to heal (glue fell off) and the others are itching. I had my first experience with food getting stuck in my chest.. I thought i was dying. No more dry turkey burgers for me😩 I hope everyone is doing well. -

That's awesome Lipman! My stall looks to be over with a 1 kilogram/2.2 pound loss. Protein been stressing me out, it's so hard at this stage when you don't do shakes and aren't a fan of powders and are vegetarian. Even protein drinks are ick now, just too sweet. I can't wait for normal foods, been saving high protein recipes. I'll go back and update our list soon as there's a few names missing. I'd love to know how @Synlee is going. -

I have chia in my freezer. How do you think taking it dry will affect my stomach at 8 weeks post since it expands to 10xs its weight in liquid? I used to take 2T daily. Dry. I'm thinking I should soak it first. -
i didn't have sushi until way into maintenance...probably like 2 years post op or so. however, i did have sashimi pretty regularly starting at around 4-5 months post op. i think the first time i only had 1 piece (barely), but i eventually graduated to like 2-3 peices by the 1-yr post op mark. Nowadays (at 4.5+ yrs post-op) i could have like 6-7 peices (of sashimi) in one sitting so long as i don't eat anything else. As for sushi or maki/rolls, I could probably have like 2-3 in one sitting....but i don't have it as often as sashimi, cuz i don't like to waste stomach space on rice, lol.

So, I need to share a win: Going on a 2 week trip to Italy in 3 weeks. Need to buy some new clothes to wear on the trip and my wife had a $30 cash thing from Old Navy. We go last night and I am trying to find some shorts that are "tight" on me with some elastic, so that they will still fit well in 3 weeks when I am ~15 pounds lighter. I put on a pair of XL shorts that I think fit well. I know Old Navy stuff runs pretty big, but I was VERY happy that I could shop in a regular store (not a big and tall). That happiness doubled when my wife saw the shorts and said "Those look too baggy, let me go grab a large and see how those look". They looked awesome! So I am now the PROUD owner of 2 large pairs of old navy shorts

Hello everyone, My surgery is on June 16. I'm more excited than anything else. I started the journey at 328 lbs and one week in the preop diet (two protein shakes, 4 oz of lean meat and unlimited non-starchy veggies per day) I am at 315 lbs. You all are an inspiration and I love reading through everyone's posts. Keep up the good work everyone!

3 months. Interestingly, sushi seems to be the only context I don't have issues with rice. I can eat maybe 3-4 pieces even now at 22 months PO. This probably would have a similar restriction level due to the raw veggies but I do little "sushi stacks" for lunch sometimes where I place raw cucumber slices and use them almost like crackers and put crabmeat, smoked salmon, avocado, sushi ginger etc. on top, sometimes with cream cheese or sriracha, sprinkle sesame seeds on top. While it's not exactly the same but with no rice it is low carb, easy to put together, and incorporates a lot of the same flavors (you can experiment with doing things like tossing the toppings in rice vinegar or soy sauce, the sky is the limit)

Thanks, glad to be back. Yes, Chicos was delivered last week. Nice pair of white pants and a festive shirt. A new golf shirt golf started many years ago when I was married to x #2 ….. lol. He was a superintendent but would never teach me. Tim and I have enjoyed learning together. I’m doing really good. Scoring around 99 average. My handicap is 31.5. headed to San Antonio for granddaughter back surgery

New to posting (my first post actually) but i’ve been following everyones journeys and i’m so excited to finally start my own! My original date was June 26 then changed to July 3rd 🎆 @LibrarianErin congrats to you on the start of your journey thanks for starting this post 😊 we’re all in this together I’ve been very stressed through all the hiccups i’ve had during the process especially the insurance process since mine was delayed for no reason but now that i have my approval and surgery date i feel a lot more calm and ready ! My process started in March when i met with my surgeon and dietician and it flew by. had my pre op appointment a week ago and my pre testing is monday 😱 I’m so excited to gain energy and confidence in myself. i’ve tried every diet possible and it’s always been a struggle in my life and only got worse as i got older with my PCOS. i am keeping who i tell in a small bubble. my parents, siblings and best friend (who got the surgery about 18 months ago ) for now. i want to keep away as much negative energy as i can with everyone being a critic i just don’t want to hear it lol. once it’s done im sure i’ll change my mind. what’s everyone doing about their job? what did you tell them, what did you say? how much time off do you get?

Greetings, Earthlings, I Come in Peace

OK, had the gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair on June 6, spend the night in the hospital. Was actually able to sleep without normal sleeping drugs- because I was exhausted- got up at 3:30am to head to hospital and I think the trauma of surgery wiped me out. But, it went well- all work was done laparoscopically without the need to open me up (I was told that was a possibility if they could not do it all laproscopically). I'm now on a full liquid diet. Pain relief is accomplished without any opioids- using gabapentin, Tylenol and Celebrex. Am supposed to refrain from any protein drinks for 3 days after surgery and will start adding vitamin supplements after first (2-4 weeks) phase. There was very little bleeding (I got off blood thinners several days before surgery). I'm surprised at how good I feel- I did take a long nap after I got home- but did a fair amount of walking today (the first day after surgery). Since I am now post-op, should I start another thread or just continue this one? Thanks for your support. All the folks at the hospital and surgical team were very helpful, pleasant, they even have a discharge lounge to enable those who rely on ride shares to be picked up in a dedicated driveway. (My wife helped here with visits and transportation). -
Try spreading your meds out across the day and yes definitely look into other vitamin formulations as others have suggested. Some even come in a spray - one squirt under the tongue -easy. A teaspoon of liquid at a time every couple of minutes is pretty much the way we’re all like. Sip, sip, sip. Keep your drink next to you at all times. I even sipped during the night & still do. I too found warm drinks easier to tolerate - more soothing. I even warmed my shakes. You’ll find it easier to meet your fluid & protein goals over the next couple of weeks when you’re more healed. My surgeon said as long as I was making an effort & getting closer he was happy. Don’t forget your shakes & soups, broths, etc. all count towards your fluid goal. Your skin dryness could be from the anaesthetic. It’s likely not from not meeting your fluid goal unless you’re a long way off your goal. Especially if you’re not experiencing any symptoms of dehydration as well (dry mouth tongue & lips, rarely or not peeing, dark & strong smelling urine, rapid heart rate &/or breathing, extreme thirst, irritable, confused, headaches, dizziness & lethargy - though the last three can be part of your recovery). If you have any of these symptoms seek medical help as soon as possible. You’ll get through this. Just give yourself time to heal & work out how best to manage everything for you.

I might have done that on purpose last week lol. I wore a shirt that is 2 sizes bigger than my current shirts to the office. I got a ton of comments from my colleagues which was nice haha. I think I missed people's commenting on my weight loss which has stopped for a while now.

It’s usually a week +/- & yes walking is best - little & often. The gas rises up & settles under your lungs where it puts pressure on nerves causing the shoulder & surrounds pain. It’s absorbed into your lungs & you breathe it out which is why walking is good - makes you breathe more deeply. Also try marching on the spot or lifting your arms up & down & deep slow breathing. Heat packs can help with the discomfort too.

Surgery done! Staying in the hospital 3 days just monitoring fluid. Leak test around midnight tonight and if I’m cleared they want me to try soup and jello. I have to be honest, I was in a lot more pain waking up than I thought. Gas pains are awful, a little better now with walking but wow. Good luck to everyone this week & those who had their surgeries today! We did it!

I agree, chewable, liquid, or dissolving vitamins would be a better option for a few months. My program requires it for the first 6 weeks. I found all mine on Amazon.

How long from first doctor visit to surgery?
LindsayT replied to KD in CT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It varies so much between program requirements and insurance requirements; as you can see from the comments. Mine was 3 months. -
I had sushi with rice at around 3 months post-op (with my program's approval!). I had zero problems with it, but even at almost 9 months post-op, I can still only eat 3-4 pieces at a time.

Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?
njlimmer replied to LoveSimcha's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi All! So a little over two years, and it's mostly all good news! I've run like 6 5k races now, but I hurt my knew in April and haven't run for 2 months. Started running again this week, but it's amazing how hard it is to get back into that mindset. I'm 10lbs up from my goal weight that I had hit and maintained for a year so that's a little frustrating. I know I need to get back to basics, but that sugar craving is ROUGH! I also find that I'm mindlessly eating so that is part of what I need to nip in the bud before 10 becomes 20 and so on. It's so weird though... before I wouldn't have even noticed gaining 10lbs. Now I can FEEL it. Hope everyone else is doing well! -
i didn't have a period for about 2 years before surgery. i assumed i was menopausal (turns out i was just fat). 2-3 weeks after surgery i got a period that lasted almost 2 weeks...which was weird...even more weird that my "normal" periods normally lasted 3-4 days. after that i got a "regular" period every month like clockwork. that went on for about 3 years until about a year ago when it went wonky again. i think i've had a period twice in the last 12 months. i'm assuming im actually menopausal now, ha (im 50 today , had my surgery in 2018)

Prior to surgery I did not have a period for almost 9 months with no birth control. One week prior to surgery my PCP was referring me to an Endo to see if I had PCOS, but I decided to wait until post op. Once I hit one month post op, I got my period and have had it ever since. Sometimes 2x per month, I thought it was the hormones which in part it is, but because I take the mini pill, if I do not take it within the same 1hr window daily, I get my period a few days after and my usual cycle. We were advised to use contraceptive because fertility definitely increases after surgery.

I'm 4 weeks post op today and have eaten Cruskits, a wafery airy cracker with cheese just fine. As long as you chew it well it'd be fine. It's a fairly soft cracker. I'd say the pain is a full tummy. It's a learning process knowing when to stop. I serve my food in a 125ml cup as I know that's my limit.

I'm not a revision, but an eight year "vet" on here. Most people don't lose weight nearly as fast after a revision as they do after a "virgin" surgery. And also, you do have some control over that. You probably won't be able to eat much for the first few weeks after the surgery because of the swelling and healing, but once you're through that, you do have some control over how many calories you're taking in. You can always bump them up a bit if you think you're starting to lose too much weight
