Starting plastics journey with questions
SunnyClover replied to SunnyClover's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Today is surgery day. I didn’t end up losing much, but I realized my desire to lose was motivated by fear that my surgery wouldn’t be “enough” and I would still feel fat. I decided to let go and trust the process but I did start walking 10,000 steps a day to prepare. I’m nervous, can’t sleep. Such a big change coming, it is just so unpredictable. I will say, as I was losing and seeing my skin hang and wrinkle, I didn’t think it was gross or ugly, I was more curious and observant. I’m hoping that translates after surgery, during the long recovery. Attaching before pics to track progress. -
August 2023 Surgery Buddies!
DD 7939 replied to kayhay0714's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I had gastric sleeve on 8/17 and developed an itchy hives rash on my chest, back and butt around 2 weeks after. I still have them, but it has slowly gotten better. My bariatric office had no concrete answers. I think my bariatric multivitamin chew may be the culprit. High in niacin B3…I may be having a reaction. I stopped taking them a few days ago and started to get a little better. I have had the random skin infection in the past, but nothing like this. Unfortunately I have no answers. -
August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Hello, I had my surgery 08/14, I've been having terrible acne. I do have PCOS and cardiomyopathy. I asked my WLS he said he's not familiar with acne as a symptom, went to my cardiologist he said it's not heart related. Went to a dermatologist she told me it was contact dermatitis from something from the hospital. I had to go to the ER and get a steroid shot. I'm currently trying to find a doctor who will see me immediately and do a hormone panel and other blood panels on me as it keeps spreading and I'm very concerned about the scarring. Is anyone else experiencing skin issues? -abby -

What sort of "good problems" you had after WLS

I hurt my ankle recently and the boot on the tightest setting was too loose. I still remember never being able to wear fashion boots. It really bothered me when I went skiing back then, I had such a difficult time cause my boots could never close properly cause my calves were so big versus my foot size. I remember once I had to remove the lining of my ski boots to close them[emoji22]. I always hid this fact with the people I went with. It was not only too embarrassing but extremely painful to ski with no boot padding inside. -
I can eat virtually anything or any amount of calories. The downside of overeating is pooping it out multiple times in a day, along with gas and sometimes bloating when I eat too much fat or dairy. To be fair, as absolutely fantastic and awesome as I look for an old fart, I have the downside that anyone who loses weight has: 1) You look anorexic and cancer like for at least awhile, maybe forever. I'm in the middle somewhere. 2) Loose skin - anything north of 100lbs is a guarantee of wrinkly loose skin in many places. I have it but it's not as bad as many others experience. PLastic surgery to remove it is always a possibility if it bothers you. 3) I take vitamins daily, but no where near as much as any Hess DS patient.

Fleur-de-lis/Panniculectomy & Pregnancy
New To This23 replied to Nyx's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have a friend who got roux-en-y in our mid-20s. She lost a lot of weight, I have known her since childhood and she had always been heavy, gaining rapidly in high school. After high school, she had 1 child. She then married someone, got weight-loss surgery, got breast implants and a panniculectomy then proceeded to have a set of twins and two more kids. She managed to lose all of her pregnancy weight, by not gaining excess weight while pregnant and she did not re-stretch her skin. I think you should go for it. In my opinion, you should live in the present. Life has no guarantees, and you want to be comfortable and happy now. You may or may not have children in the future, but don't let the hope of something, hinder your happiness now. The best way to keep a handle on how much your skin might stretch during pregnancy is to monitor yourself, and not gain more than recommended. A couple of scenarios- 1. You meet someone, are not comfortable in your skin and let it hold you back. 2. You meet someone, have children, and are so busy with family life that getting the skin removal surgery is put off for several more years. 3. You have the surgery, you meet someone, have kids and your stomach does not stretch. 4. You have the surgery, meet someone, have kids, your stomach stretches just a little bit you decide it's no big deal or you just have another surgery. -

Thank you so much!!! I have to put it off until I finish my medical assisting program, but we're looking at January or so for the surgery. So just a few more months and then no more period!!! I do have an appt with my bariatric surgeon in Oct to see if that bulge just above my belly button is a hernia or not. If not, then we have to figure out what it is. But I can still work out without pain, I'm still incredibly healthy, and all in all I'm happy. I just want the rest of this nonsense to be finished. I never want to have another surgery, yet as I say that, I know I'll eventually have my skin surgeries lol But I actually WANT those, so maybe that'll be different. -

Today is my 1 year anniversary and I am happy and sad at the same time. I got so very close to goal but I have spent the last month in a stall so I really don't have that awesome feeling that I hoped to have at the 1 year mark. I know this stall will pass too and I'm happy with how far I've come. I made it to normal bmi which I didn't think I would ever see again. I still want to lose at least 10 more lbs so that I'm safely in the normal range but 10 lbs seems doable after the last year. I still have trouble accepting that I've changed but little things make me so happy, like crossing my legs and feeling bones that were hidden. I'm happy my hair has stopped falling out and is starting to slowly grow back. Slower than before but I'll take slow as long as it grows lol. I started a journal at the beginning and set goals for myself and guessed at sizes my arms, thighs, waist etc should be. I had no idea what I should set those to so I looked them up in google for averages for women my height and I actually hit or beat all those measurements except my waist I set to 30 inches and I got to 33. I have a ton of extra skin there though and hope to have that removed so I still might hit that goal I took pictures along the way and wore the exact same outfit and its amazing so see how far I've come. I'll see if I can figure out how to add it here. Its not a great picture of me but it for sure shows the weight loss . I hope everyone else is doing well and I hope to see more updates from others. Take care! -

I really get this. Its your body and if you need a lower buffer weight then its your business. If your hubby did not know you had intentionally dieted, Would he have said anything ? I can tell you now that my husband would not know. We have been away in Spain for 2 weeks so my husband saw a bit more of me than usual. I was laying in bed without covers and clothes, it was so hot. My hip bones and ribs were prominent. My skin hangs off me, its not pretty. He said I think its time you gave up trying to loose weight now, you are skin and bone. My local doctor wants me to loose at least 40lbs more to get in a healthy range. I am happy where I am, I look good in my clothes. Who is right ? Me ! So congrats on your loss and bugger everyone else -
I had gastric bypass about 4 years ago. I've lost 200 lb and I want my excess skin around my belly removed but I haven't had any children and honestly I plan on doing so if I find the other half but I waited almost a year to see the plastic surgeon. I get there and they tell me they can help me and I'm so excited that I can finally be done with this irritation. I don't want this done because I want a flat belly I'm tired of being itchy and sweaty and uncomfortable all the time that's why I want it done but they told me I had time to think about whether I wanted the fleur-de-lis or if I wanted the regular procedure done. I wasn't sure so they told me I could check online. I did so and then in the process found out that most people recommend that you not get pregnant or that you don't do this until you're done with having kids. I'm just so confused are there saying I'm going to have a little bit of a belly again or are they saying the whole thing is going to come crashing down and I'll be right back where I am now. I don't know. I'm just really upset because I feel like I did a lot to get here and now that I am at the end goal, I'm being denied. Sorry if this sounds like a rant. It probably is but I do genuinely want to hear from others.

Getting your hair professionally colored?
MarisAthena replied to jacquelynn22's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
First, congratulations! It was the best decision of my entire life and 3 months after the surgery I can say, it will ALWAYS be the best decision of my life. I believe it will be one of the best decisions you made. I colored my hair after couple of months, I had no problem. I did not loose hair, although I was expecting it. I believe I did not loose hair even though I lost 51 pounds in 3 months, because I always eat the right amount of protein and also took a biotin supplement in addition to Calcium, Iron and multivitamins. I am happy, energetic and blessed. All my blood tests came back PERFECT! No high bad cholesterol, no high triglycerides, and after 15 years of being a diabetic and juggling metformiin and insulin, I am no longer a diabetic. My last A1C was 5.5 which places me in the normal range, I am not even a prediabetic. I was so scared of the gastric bypass that I considered not getting the surgery up to the time they rolled me in the operating room. I really hated my liquid diet and was in tremendous pain after the surgery because I had a hiatal hernia repair surgery at the same time with the gastric bypass. I cannot believe that there are only 3 months and 10 days since my surgery! So, while there are scary stories out there and the journey is not easy, please know that each individual is unique, and trust that your story will be one of success as mine is! One doctor told me couple of years ago that getting a gastric bypass was the best decision of his life. I can say the same about me and wish for you the same! -

I use Vital Proteins ( currently on sale in Costco ). I mainly add it to my morning coffee - typically a protein coffee as it is. I have used it for years prior to surgery and I continue to use it. As others have said, nothing can stop the hair shed - I am still shedding at 5 months, but a tiny bit less than when it started at 3 months. However I know the collagen will help new hair growth. I take a bit of extra biotin - more than just my bariatric multi - and keep up my protein intake. I use a Biotin & Collagen shampoo and conditioner - though I know that won't truly help, lol. It's a mental thing and it was on sale at Marshall's. At worst, my hair is still clean, lol. I take the collagen more so for joints and skin since as we get older our collagen depletes. It takes a few months to even really notice any differences so it is something you have to stay consistent with.

Genuinely weird one, not really a victory, but it's a thing: For a few months, I've been noticing that my sheets feel like they're bunching up in bed when I roll over. Which doesn't make sense because they're stretchy jersey sheets and don't really have any give. Plus, when I sit up and check, there's no loose fabric there. ... because it's not my sheets, its the loose skin on my back folding up. 😐 Also, I finally figured out what everyone on this thread means by "don't have to do yoga to wipe". I didn't realize that it was possible for regular-sized people to reach down without twisting at all. Wild. (I wasn't fat as a kid or a teenager. Have I just been doing extra yoga my whole life for no reason? I guess so!) -
There's no BMI requirement for any specific wls procedure. The type of surgery is a medical decision made between the Dr and patient, not the insurance company. Most insurance won't cover wls unless you have a 40 bmi or other medical issues like pre diabetes etc. I had a 39 to 40 BMI at 287 lbs. I choose the Sadi DS over the traditional Hess DS, RNY, VSG or Lapband after disucssing my goals with my doctor. My criteria was to lose all the weight, keep it off and be able to eat normally eventually. All of them are true for me today (9 years later) but I also do my part with at least trying to mostly eat well, and getting daily exercise. It's important to note that wls creates an imbalance in your body and you have to make adjustments including the vitamins, eating, accepting loose skin, bloating and gas issues with bad food choices, etc. FYI - It's not an easy journey and takes time. If you make the commitment, it's worth it. Below is my journey and my almost 63 year old body 9 years post Sadi.

I just have collagen in my protein (it's not my source of protein, it's just added as extra). Like someone else said, it just helps the new growth. Using quality hair products does wonders for your hair. As well as regular trims. I like Tretinoin for my face. It helps with fine lines, hyper pigmentation, acne, dullness.... it's a mature woman's miracle cream. It's prescription only, but well worth it. For the rest of your skin, make sure to moisturize religiously. I do an in shower lotion and then another moisturizer once I'm dried off. I have noticed a big improvement with the texture of my skin. And I don't use anything overly special. Your multivitamin should already have biotin in it, so you shouldn't need to add any additional milligrams (brand specific). I use women's one a day vitamin, and it has 100% of the biotin I need.

Lympodema After Gastric Sleeve Surgery
summerseeker replied to Erica S's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had lymphoedema because of my weight and I also had major problems when walking. I would be so out of breath and my heart would hammer in my chest. I was classed as disabled. I relied on a stick. Housework was difficult, It would take a week to clean my home, a room at a time. I ironed a shirt and sat down, panting. Now since surgery I am super active, can clean the house in an afternoon. I can walk miles without stopping to rest. My lymphoedema was in my arms and legs, I was very embarrassed about the size of them. Although I do not have the most beautiful ankles now, I would say they pass. My arms have a great deal of loose empty skin. At my age, I am wondering if I should have corrective surgery or not. I have been on 3 overseas holidays in very hot climates since surgery. My ankles and calves have never swelled and they always did before, especially on the plane journey. Its good not to wear the ugly socks. Good luck with your decision making -
The bariatric she is real and nothing will stop it. You need to make sure you stick to your protein amounts everyday because your hair needs it to produce new growth and grow (your hair can't produce protein but needs it). Collagen and biotin (as well as keratin_ are fantastic for helping your hair be softer, shinier, and healthier. BUT, it does nothing to actually prevent shedding or make it grow. Collagen is great for hair, skin, and nails as well as joints. For me, I use Codeage Platinum collagen powder. It has 5 kinds of collagen, biotin, keratin, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin c. It's amazing, and I've used it for almost 2 years. It's everything I need for hair, skin, nails, and joints. Another thing I take is MSM. It's amazing for joints, but it also helps thicken hair (which is something I need since I've had 2 bariatric surgeries and my hair is seriously thin). Also make sure you take vitamin E. That's another things that is fantastic for skin and can be beneficial for hair, as well. I also use Living Proof thickening shampoo and conditioner and dry shampoo. It helps give my hair volume, which I desperately need right now. Hope all of this helps!!!

Ditto to alllllllll the above. Collagen is great for hair, skin, and nails but it takes time and won't stop the "bariatric shed" from happening. I take Vital Protein's brand, I get it in a tub from Costco and throw it in my coffee every morning. It does help, but it takes time and consistency, especially for hair. As @Arabesque mentioned, hair is all dead stuff, so you won't see the benefits until it starts to grow out.
-
Your hair is dead so all the biotin & collagen may help is any new growth. So you won’t see any improvement with your hair for some months & your new growth has some length. I understood it takes 4-12 weeks to see any benefits to your skin. I took a collagen supplement & silica for months & months but really saw no improvement - was pretty disappointed. My beauty therapist gave me a liquid marine collagen serum ($100 a bottle - yikes!) to apply to my face. I used it religiously for 6+ months & didn’t get results with that either. Just depends on our skin I think. Hope it works for you. Personally I really like Vitamin C & retinol - texture, tone, brightening, etc. I get good results. I use a 15% Vitamin C & 2% retinol (1% retinol & 1% bakuchiol). I also did 4 derma needling RF sessions over 4 months & it’s amazing. I have defined cheek bones again, no more lip stick bleed, & my jowly bits have decreased a lot. It takes three months to see the benefits of each session. Good luck. PS - Neither will stop the hair loss we almost experience after surgery. Our normal hair loss cycle is temporarily accelerated so the extra hair you lose during this time, would have been shed anyway (as all our hair eventually is) just over a longer time frame. Those who swear by it experience their hair loss for about 3 months +/- but so do those who don’t take it so … 🙂

Hey, so I'm on a hunt for a good collagen supplement that won't break the bank? Right now I'm using Spring Valley Collagen and Biotin. I'd say I've been using it for two weeks so far. I feel like it's probably helping my skin, but I'm not noticing anything really with my hair which is what I want it for and because my team recommended it. Anybody using collagen?
