4 Days Post Op - Protein, Fluids - Help!

I would only count things as a meal if it has protein. Popsicles would be considered fluid only. At four days post op, you really don't have to eat 3 meals a day, etc. You just have to sip constantly while you're awake in order to hit your protein and fluid goals until your tummy heals to the point that it can accept "normal bariatric portion meals" I would just focus on sipping every 15 minutes when you're not eating. The only thing that would count as a meal AND fluids would be something like a protein shake, protein water or broth with unflavored protein powder that was added to it, so anything that has proteins and is a fluid would count as both. I don't batch and freeze currently, so I'm not sure about containers. I'm not sure how freezing protein shakes would go. I have a feeling the texture would be different or they may separate. Have you tried the Fairlife protein shakes? They don't taste like a protein shake. They just taste like a lightly flavored milk to me. Strawberry reminds me of Strawberry Nesquick, but not as strongly flavored.
  2. I am 4 days post op (Gastric Roux and Y). Eating Jello/Broth and added strained soup yesterday. I'm not getting any protein or enough fluids. I can't stand store bought protein shakes. I have recipes for amazing shakes after GB but do I count these as a meal or part of my fluid intake or both? Same question with popsicles (meal, fluid intake or both)? I read about people sipping on their protein shakes but I don't know which category they are using them for. Also are there any snacks allowed. Everything I have says just meals but then things like string cheese are listed as acceptable. Does String Cheese count as a meal and why is it listed as full liquid diet food? Do you batch cook and then freeze for later? Container recommendations? Can you freeze DIY protein shakes?
  3. The best advice I can give is to return to your pre-surgery food plan. My clinic uses a "liver reduction" plan which is high protein, low carb, high vegetables/fiber, and occasional 30g protein drinks I am post RNY>RNY revision on 12/21/21 and losing very slowly after losing a lot (70 lbs) pre-surgery). It's frustrating. Because of complications post surgery I have no more consumption restriction than I had pre-surgery, so I have to strictly track my food intake, calories, and protein on the Baritastic app. I'm getting about 1000-1200 kcal per day now. The clinic wants me to eat 800 kcal. I can stick to the diet for meals, but struggle with craving between meals. I'm like a zombie staggering to the refrigerator at 3pm, 8pm, and bedtime. The cravings are irresistible. I want ANYTHING! While I have been choosing "good" food, like fat-free Greek yogurt or fat-free cottage cheese and fruit, I'm exceeding the calorie count they want me to maintain. I don't eat sugar, flour, white potatoes, rice, and processed foods because I am a sugar/food addict and these are "trigger foods" for me. I've recently found a few snack foods that are satisfying the craving for these things. For "bread" I've discovered low-cal, low-wheat Ak-Mak Sesame Crackers, WASA Crisp'n Light Crispbread, & WASA Light Rye Crispbread at 20 kcal per cracker. For sweets I like Smucker's Sugar-Free Jam at 25 kcal per Tbsp. A single cracker with a tablespoon of the sugar-free jam often satisfy the urge to stuff my mouth. If not, two surely will. I'm still not meeting the 800 kcal goal, but getting closer. Good luck getting back on track with eating healthy. Get exercise, too!

    Liquid Diet

I survived off protein Shakes 2-3 a day in liquid phase, filled with crystal lite generic flavored water and jello for something kinda solid to keep the crazy away. I have to admit when I was allowed to eat my first scrambled egg it was a game changer. I'm a creature of habit though and I'm fine with eating the same thing over and over and over. I think that has helped me the most through this process-I don't need variety. Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. Hello all! My name is Anne. I hope I'm in the right forum for this. I'm brand new here so please redirect me if necessary. I'm hoping for an accountability buddy, someone roughly a few years post op hopefully like myself, someone who needs some cheering on for keeping healthy eating habits... I had gastric roux en y back in 2019, lost 141lbs and 3 years out I've successfully kept it off - woo hoo! However, I have one BIG problem...for roughly a year now my diet has been AWFUL. I mean really bad. Lots of junk, lots of carbs, not remotely getting enough protein, you could say I've just gone off the rails. This coincides with one of the roughest times in my life with massive life challenges one after the other knocking me down, big ones, and just like life pre-surgery, I self medicate with junk food. Which is what landed me on that operating table in the first place. Believe me, I know how wrong this is. I know that the weight thing is a mind thing, that I should have self-soothing behaviors that are NOT food related. I know. But I'm 52 years old now and old (as in decades long) soothing behaviors seem to just be ingrained. I'm tired of making excuses for myself however. It's time for me to change that. It does not matter what life challenges I'm dealing with. It can only bring me harm to eat as awfully as I do. It's a miracle I haven't gained any weight back eating the way I do, and for that much I'm grateful. But nevertheless, it's downright wrong for me to treat my body so shabbily by eating this way. I just never feel good anymore, it's taking a toll, I have no energy, and it's my own doing. So I'm ready to turn this ship around. Is there anyone here who can relate to this? Anyone sliding into unhealthy eating habits? I'm hoping to connect with someone who could use an accountability buddy so to speak, so we can inspire each other to honor our bodies by treating it right by eating healthy and the way we were taught to eat following surgery. If anyone is interested, I'm assuming there's a private message feature here (again, I'm brand new, trying to navigate how all this works), shoot me a message. Regardless, best wishes to all who are in this journey together, no matter where you are on your road!

    September surgery buddies!!

So I just started my liquid diet today and at 1st I was freaking out because I'm allowed 1 small meal a day plus the 2 protein shakes and a list of other approved things. But I thought I had to stay under 800 calories and I didn't realize how many calories are in everything including the protein shakes themselves (160). So I went through everything that is allowed on my list and was trying to figure out what I could even eat for dinner and leave me enough calories for lunch and it was not going well. Luckily I re read my diet sheet and the calorie restriction doesn't hit until my second week, yay! So for this 1st week I still only have liquids except for dinner so I'm sure my calories will be less that usual but I'll have time to adjust before I hit that 800 calorie limit next week. The exact wording for the dinner is one small, normal meal and we are having pork chops with asparagus so I think I will be ok. As a side question fueled by my stressful morning, how do I calculate the calories in the broth from a strained soup? Say I take a can of chicken noodle soup but strain it and only drink the broth, how do I figure out the calories in that broth?
  7. I am a huge fan of the caffe latte by premiere protein but I am wanting to change it up a bit and have something different. Does anyone have any other coffee type shakes that are good to suggest. Ideally those with caffeine in them.
  8. Idk, IF my chipped cavities are related to sleeve then that’s not always the case because I am the model bariatric patient. I even asked to follow up MORE often just to hold myself accountable. In a year and a half I have missed my calcium maybe twice (never missed my multivitamin to this day), I get my protein religiously and I take great care of my teeth to include professional cleanings twice a year. It is possible they are just coincidence time wise. That’s always possible I guess. But I am going to ask the dentist and I will report back here with his opinion of whether it’s excess acid. I guess even if it is this isn’t an extreme case of teeth falling out but I’m only a year and a half out so I guess only time will tell. Not trying to scare anyone. But I was never warned about the possibility and I think people should know about all the possible risks going in. My appt is Sept 22nd. If I forget to reply someone mention me to remind me and I will let everyone know what the dentist says.
  9. Yes I forgot about those but I actually ordered some the other day, along with the soups and some unflavored protine powder "Isopure Unflavored Whey Isolate Protein Powder" it's the one that was recommended the most to me for adding into other things such as soups , other drinks, broths, pudding ect .... but I was told of its going into a cold like pudding or something dissolve it into a few oz of warm water first to keep from getting a giddy texture or add it in when making pudding Sent from my SM-G996U using BariatricPal mobile app

You might also look into protein waters. Gatorade makes one, as do other companies that don't have the electrolytes in them. There are a lot of folks on here that complain about not being able to hit their water or protein goals early on, so I'm hopeful these will help me better hit both, since it's double-duty.

Meal replacement bars that are good?

I will have to try the Built Bars. Currently, I eat the Protein One protein bars. 90 calories and 10 grams of protein is a pretty good ratio. My favorite is the Strawberries & Cream variety.

How was the 2 week liquid diet

I was on liquids a kind of long time from May 27th until 2 weeks after my June 7th surgery date. I never suffered or was outrageously hungry. I lived off crystal lite water, jello and protein Shakes. My surgeon had a very strict plan compared to some I've heard but I think it was good for me. I've learned I don't NEED food like I did pre-opp. I eat food too function. If I like it a lot that's a plus. I don't eat for entertainment anymore or reward or to fix emotional boo boo's, I eat too feed my body to function. Don't get me wrong when I had my first bite of scrambled egg with Salt my eyes rolled back in my head! It was the best thing I ever tasted but the time on liquids was easy for me. Just acknowledge it as a time that has to be. That helps. It's your first line in the sand for the new way your going to be eating for the rest of your life. I think it's a great idea. Were I you, I'd focus on cleaning up my diet, e.g. start eliminating the junk and focus on eating more lean protein and vegetables. Even low carb junk is still junk, so it's best to avoid it. I can understand the desire to be lower than your spouse, but I honestly think 125 is way too low for you. Obese people have enlarged hearts and livers, denser, heavier bones, and increased blood supplies to carry blood to all that fat. As a result, you can't use "averages" based on height (such as BMI) as a guide. The best bet would be to use your percentage of body fat and pick a health body fat from something like this: My best guess would be that somewhere between 150 and 175 would probably put you in the right range. If you know you actual percentage of body fat now, I can calculate a better number for you. Remember too that if you get to a higher weight, you can always set a new lower goal if you don't like the way you look and feel at that weight. On the other hand, if you set a goal that's too low, you'll just get frustrated trying to reach an unattainable goal.

    September surgery buddies!!

Hi guys. This is only my second post in the community at all. My surgery is September 29th. My preop diet is not just liquids. Infact I can eat but it has to be under 30 carbs a day. My plan is to drink protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and eat low carb dinner. I want to make sure my liver shrinks and I lose weight in the process. I know it'll be hard. However, I am thinking about starting this diet tomorrow to give me time to practice and mess up before I have to officially start and not mess up. Plus I am just gaining more weight by not dieting right now. I want to practice my new life style while I have a chance to mess up basically. What do yall think of this? If so, I am going to start tomorrow. A little about me I am 5' 6". HW 387 CW 345 SW ? GW 125? I don't know how to choose a good goal weight lol. I just want to be smaller than my husband who is 135. Maybe ill just see what looks good on me. However I do want to lose 200 pounds at least. I am nervous about failing again. I had the lapband when I was 19 and it never worked for me. I quickly learned to eat around it. However I was in an abusive relationship at the time and attempted suicide at the time. I was not ready for it. I am in a much better place now and I am ready for real change. I am just nervous it wont work for me. I have binge eating disorder and what if that doesn't go away? WIll I still have food on my mind 24/7? I just want to be able to say no to food. i only can now because of my vyvanse. Ugh. Im just rambling. I am sorry. Will this forum stay open after we have our surgeries or will it move to a different forum? Idk. I am just ready to have this surgery. Time until September 29th is moving so slow.
  15. This reminded me, something so critical for me through the years, and that is tracking calories, macros, weight. Oh how I wish I was a mindful eater but unfortunately, I am not. I simply have never trusted myself and to keep the weight off, I absolutely have to log everything. It helps me keep track of my 7-13 fruit/vegetable servings that I need daily, as well as my protein. On those bottomless hungry days, I like to look at what I ate because it helps me determine my physical vs head hunger too.

    Need more protein!! Please help

Early on I was constantly sipping on a protein shake. My doctor was more strict about eating though at 2 weeks I was just getting on pureed. Scrambled eggs were a God send! The flavor that I had been sadly missing and to actually be able to chew! Also if your tolerating Tuna, try Tuna salad, the eggs mayo and Tuna is a lot of protein but it might be too heavy on your stomach this early. Maybe try it? Dunno... it was another God send. 17. Yes, your body adapts to the changes made by surgery, and it will still want to gain weight, as it does now, but it is harder and slower to do so. This means that you have to adapt to to counter that tendency - the surgery will indeed help you to lose the weight that you can't lose now by yourself, but you still need to work at keeping it off. This guy gives a pretty good presentation of how it progresses, and some ideas on how to live with those changes to help maintain things. You don't have to follow all of his recommendations, (I'm not so sure about his green smoothie thing....) but it helps to understand what is happening so that you can develop your own plan that makes sense for you. My takeaway from him is that you will see increased ability to eat more at a meal, though not as much as pre op - his progression is consistent with my experience, though my wife maintains a greater restriction than I do, YMMV - is to fill in that increased ability/desire to eat more with bulky, low calorie veg to minimize and control the caloric increase over time. The salads that I make now for lunch have about the same amount of protein - meat and cheese - that they did early on, but a lot more veg than earlier. Our protein needs doesn't increase over time - our "high protein" post op diet isn't really all that high, but rather a maintenance level of protein while everything else is dramatically reduced at that time. I found that it really helps to work on your long term maintenance diet as early as possible - long before surgery if you can - to get used to how you should eat 5-10 years from now rather than just next month or next year. Learn how you should be eating for good weight maintenance (and satiety) and start developing those habits early - don't worry about rapid pre op weight loss, let the surgery do that. If you are seriously concerned about your long term prospects on weight maintenance - if you have had a long history of yo yo dieting, and/or are starting at a very high BMI, you should also consider the DS, duodenal switch, surgery as that has demonstrably better regain resistance than the RNY or VSG, which are very similar in that regard. There are more trade offs involved - what in life doesn't have them - but it is worth considering ahead of time rather than as a revision later on, as the bypass is a difficult thing to revise.
  18. I will try my best to answer your questions. They are good questions. I had the sleeve in 2015, I was revised to bypass due to gerd over a year ago. Years after the sleeve, my weight crept back up about 40 lbs but no where close to where I started which was over 320 lbs. Unfortunately, my appetite was never really supressed after the sleeve, but even years later, I could never eat a lot in one sitting. 10 ounces max no matter how hungry I was. I never ate around the sleeve either. That is, no milkshakes, donuts, cakes, slider foods that slide right through the sleeve. So the restriction was always there, thank goodness. But then, I got gerd. Gerd is a horrible thing, it gnaws at your stomach and you feel you have to put something in it constantly just so the pain subsides. No medication worked. It was frustrating, painful, no sleep either. Fast forward, I get an RNY and my severe gerd is finally gone. I still have silent reflux from time to time but it is not bad. Appetite is more suppressed compared to the sleeve but I could have happily went a lifetime with my sleeve and stay in a decent weight range if I didn't get gerd and had to revise. So, yes, appetite returns but if you can make the commitment to follow the basic rules of protein first, no drinking during meals, no slider foods, you will do good.
  19. SD- 5/2018 SW-318 LW -180 didn’t stay there long & maintained roughly 190-195 for a long time. CW 210 Yes your stomach will stretch back out Yes it’s very hard work—FOREVER I am torn like on 1 hand it was totally worth it. On the other hand It didn’t solve the issue that I desperately needed it to. That’s another story for another time. I am however slightly happier thinner. I wasn’t happy at 180 it was too small for me. I like me at 200 it is my happy weight but I am slowly gaining. For the past 1.5 yr I have been ⬆️ & down 10lbs usually gaining right before my menstrual cycle & then I lose its. Everything kinda comes back like my appetite is larger & I can eat just about anything. I don’t exercise persay but I live on a farm so I’m always working. I back to the same shitty eating habits eating once a day @ dinner like before WLS. I need to re train my mind make protein intake a priority & more frequently. GOOD for u for taking this leap of faith. I’m sure that I wait is stressful in itself. I can’t believe it’s taking that long. It took me 2.5-3 mths from initial appointment.

    Extreme tiredness

Yeah I still get this all the time. Not in any way related to dumping or carbs for me - it's the same after a protein only meal. Definitely not hypoglycaemia, just the blood flow being directed to my stomach instead of my brain (well known phenomenon but I think heightened after VSG)!! I work so can't afford to nap but I SO want to!

    August surgery buddies!

Wow, that sounds terrible! I've been fortunate to have no nausea PO. Can you tolerate cream soups? I crammed some good protein in w isopure plain protein powder. To add plain protein powder, you need to mix with the powder w a tiny bit of cool soup until dissolved, then you can add to hot soup. It clumps really grossly if added straight to hot liquid. I'm a little afraid to try eggs, people have so many issues with them. I might be brave today. Let's hope your bariatric team comes up with something. Sorry to hear you're struggling so much.

    August surgery buddies!

That sounds good. I tried greek yogurt, twice, but even though it was lactose free (i'm lactose intolerant) it didn't agree with me. Im fact, it didn't agree with me so much that I ended up throwing up and haven't tried it since. I did buy some sugar free jello and sugar free jello puddings, but unfortunately they are included in the many things that make me gag post surgery. I'd never tried the puddings before, but I had tried sugar free jello from time to time and found it ok, but now I absolutely can't. Same with protein puddings, just the smell makes me sick. I thought I was done with vomiting, since I hadn't done so in a week, but tonight I did again. All I had was a soft boiled egg. I've had scrambled eggs plenty of times before and it was always ok, so I thought I could try soft boiled. I hadn't even finished half the egg when I had to throw up. Feeling kind of defeated tonight, but I guess I'll email the nurse again for advice.
  23. Pre-op diets vary from one surgeon to the next, but be prepared for it to suck. There's pretty much no way around it, but you just have to get through it as part of your WLS journey that will be worth it in the end. It feels like an eternity when you're going through it, but eventually, it will be a blip in your memory. My best tip, both for the pre-op diet and the liquid phase, is that you're going to be drinking a lot of protein shakes, so buy samples of different brands and flavors so you can have a variety. Also, you'll learn to appreciate sugar-free popsicles.
  24. Had my VSG yesterday. Came home today. No nausea, no pain (of course that may pop up) lol Now on to the Stage one for 14 days. - broth, and Premiere protein shakes, SF 1 popsicle . 1 SF jello.
  25. Totally agree with this, "work smarter not harder" ... unless it's weight loss surgery apparently. We all know going through this journey it's not the easy way out. It surprises people when I tell them all the life-altering changes we have to make. I do think it's SLOWLY starting to become more acceptable to society. It makes me sad that most people wait till it's their very last option (✋🏼💁‍♀️👈🏼 Hi, it's me I'm one of the people) because they're afraid they are going to be labeled for taking "The easy way out". It's life-changing and I don't regret it for a second, anyone that doesn't or wouldn't understand my decision is probably not someone I want around in my life anyway.
