8 months post-op and 12lbs to goal!
Alexis99 replied to cdeisroth's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I can't decide between sleeve or bypass. Would love to hear your reasons behind your choice. I know everyone's different. Just curious... I think I passed would be better for me because I am a big time sweet eater unfortunately. But I'm terrified about the malabsorption and some other stuff associated with that period at the same time this looks appealing but if Cookies are going to go right down and might not set me up for success. Thank you for posting your before and after pics definitely helps us to see what can be done. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App -
At the beginning of April I all of a sudden had no restriction and was able to eat anything. I went for a fill thinking that I had just waited awhile and that maybe the band just loosened after losing weight, but still no restriction. I went back the next week and got another fill, and yet still no restriction so they decided to check to see how much fluid there was. They were only able to pull out 3cc, when my chart said that I should have had a little more than 9cc. She gave me a fill of 4cc (which would bring me back up to 7cc) and told me to come back the next week. I came back and they checked the fluid again..... still only found 3cc! They told me that it had to be a port leak and that I would need to get a port revision. I freaked at the sound of $1550 seeing as how I am a self-pay and still paying on my surgery. Well I got the loan regardless and had the surgery on May 7th. When I got out of surgery, my doctor told me that he was not able to see the leak in the port. I was furious seeing as how they did not even offer me the option to have the barium to see if it was even a port leak.. they were just so sure that they knew what it was. I mean the barium would have only been $100 vs. $1550 for the surgery and for a college student I would have rather taken the lesser of the two and prevented a surgery that I did not need. So I went back to the doctor this past Tuesday to get a fill. He told me that during surgery he gave me a fill of 5cc and that he was going to give me another fill of 4cc on that day (which would bring me up to 9cc). When he checked the fluid after giving the fill, I only had 7cc! I have to go back tomorrow to see if the 7cc are still in there.. if not then it's something to do with the band, which is something he has never heard of happening! I'm beginning to get extremely discouraged because I am only 13 months banded and already running into problems when I haven't even reached my goal weight... not to mention all of these expenses that I am incurring on top of the surgery I am still paying for. I go back tomorrow to see if the 7cc are still in there.. I will keep you all updated! Wish me luck..

I think I first really thought about it when the owner of my mechanic shop who weighed almost 400 pounds weighed less than me after gastric bypass surgery. He now weighs 177 pounds! He is a completely different person now! Another thing that drove me crazy was when my stomach got so big that I was always pulling up my pants because they would settle under the belly and the only tops I could wear were tunic style to cover my belly! Oh and having people give me dirty looks when I sat next to them on an air plane (thank god I never had to get a seat belt extender!)

My surgery was May 2nd so I'm right at 3 months out. I took one sip of a coke vanilla and I was in pain for over an hour from the carbonation. I'm Gastric Bypass. I can tell you that won't ever happen again. I can tell you one of my go-to items has been Diet Snapple Peach. I buy them in bottles and keep them handy along with soft ice from Sonics. Between those I have no problems meeting my liquid goal for the day. -
What do you ladies recommend ?
tammie30 replied to tammie30's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yikes what's that pain like ? The blood clot pain ? I heard that's very common in the bypass -
As an ER nurse you could not pay me any amount of money to have a gastric bypass. I see ALL the mistakes and I refuse to live with a colostomy bag. There are very few issues with the sleeve. I may take me longer but I am 40 years old. It took me more than a year to gain this weight.

Thinking about a revision from Band to Sleeve at OCC. I was very happy with OCC for my band and although it did well 8 years ago, 2 kids later it isn't working it may have slipped, I am not entirely sure). Anyhoo, does anyone have experience with this? Wondering what the costs might be and how long I will have to be out of work. I have a semi-physical job (massage therapist) so I need to factor that into my decision. Thanks!

Got my surgery date!!!!
Mirandajanaye replied to Mirandajanaye's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well initially i was really thinking lap band, but i was still very on the fence, and after i talked to my doctor he said that because of my medical problems already that Gastric Bypass might be the better fit for me. the only big thing before this that made me want lapband, was because i was told that you cannot get pregnant after bypass, and for me only being 19, thats a problem, but after talking to my doctor he said that pregnancy would be absolutely fine in my case at least, and after thinking it over for about a month, i decided that Bypass, would be the perfect fit for me. its really an idividual thing, i just feeel that it fits me best, a lot of people find lap band to be the better fit. but yeah, thats pretty much how i decided on bypass. -
I get a new doctor and he does not treats me fair. He agrees to give me ultram for back pain, I dont have to lose weight. And pretty much I dont. He checks me for diabeties and I have it. HUMMM I wonder why that witch never checked it.??? With this doctor, I have a new phobia called NEVEr tell the doctor your in pain. Hide it at all costs. There would be days at the doctors where I would get this pain in my back and sit and hold it forever and if the nurse asked if I was ok I would say "oh my back is hurting alittle" no big deal" and when alone I would go crazy and then i would walk as normally to my car as possible and then collapse and cry my head off and go home and be bedridden for two days.. I said enough to keep the untram, but no more. I was scared to death of being dismissed and ridiculed and NOT cared for again. This was very stupid. I fell alot and I got hurt alot and I hid it all. I become more and more crippled and gained weight. I end up unable to work and sent to the jobs program in the welfare system. I am scared. I am trying to hide the fact that I am in excrusiating pain. It was like the most important thing to be.. to hide my pain and problems. I couldnt stand anyone seeing me as a loser, a fat cripple, a broken women. I rather suffer than show it. (now I show it, I dont care) Well they noticed. They sent me to the voc doctor again and she told them I was disabled and not to make me do anything. They made me apply for SSI This day was the worst day of my life. I didnt want to apply for disabilty. I didny know what it was and I didnt want to. All I knew is that I SURE AND THE HELL WASNT to be one to get disabilty. I was completely bent, couldnt think of a single job i could do. At this point even sitting in chairs wasnt possible for very long. I was disabled. I was. But to apply for disability is admitting your the ultimate failer... My fat brought me to this point and it was too hard to admit that. This was the most depressed I have ever been. No one made me do anything..I was 'awainting disabilty" I became 400 pounds in this meaningless existance THEN.. ANOTHER Lesson.. The DISABILY thing became My chance at life and weight loss again.. I had to get the dissability, to get the back pay, to pay for the gastric bypass.. TO GET OFF OF disabilty. It was a plan.. BUT it took a long long time. About 5 years. In the meantime my doctor left and I got assigned Dr. MOORE and he was so cruel to me that his nurse turned him in, people called me, I testified on the phone and then i was notified that he had been reprimanded. Becasue of this I got a special doctor at a fancy clinic. He checked my back right away and I was herniated and had sciatica and he said it was like that a long time. YEAH, ever since I QUIT school and began to complain to my doctors. WHY DID NO ONE EVER CHECK MY BACK?? Sheesh So yeah.. 5 years, cuz I had shabby doctors.. I rememebr times when I wished the SSi would NOT go through, so I would get MORE money when it went through the next time... I needed at leaste 15,000 Well i found out that medicare would cover my gastric bypass and all I had to do was wait. Find doctors and go to all the pre stuff.. so I did

I wanted to have WLS for weight loss. But I was told that because of my severe GERD that the sleeve was a bad choice. After doing a lot of reading on the net and forums I would have to agree. Most of what I have read reflects that most people who have the sleeve end up with GERD even without having it before surgery. So, with the reading and my surgeons advise, I will be having gastric bypass on 3/21.

I had the bypass, my first insurance would have covered the sleeve but Tricare wouldn't. I had the bypass because if was covered by both insurance plans. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

I have Tricare Prime and my surgery is on May 18th. I have not seen the final ok but the doctor I am working with said it should be no problem and they have many Tricare patients. I can get the sleeve or bypass. The sleeve is new to their list for approval. I asked my primary care for a referral and I had it in less than a week. I researched the area for the surgeon I wanted to go with and checked on their website that they worked with Tricare. The doctor I am using is listed in the Tricare as a general surgeon. The long wait was for an opening with this doctor. Once I got in his office together he and Tricare required: One appointment with psych. (This is covered under Tricare Prime). One appointment with a nutritionist. (This was not covered and I paid $75 to see the nutricianist in his office). An appointment with my primary to be released for surgery. (Regular copay). An appointment at the hospital for prep (blood work, ecg... No copay) If you are getting the sleeve my doctor requires an endoscopy to make sure you are good. (I don't think this was a Tricare requirement). The surgeons office just called and asked me to start on some Vitamin B12, D and Iron due to my blood work. They seem sure I am good to get the surgery in 3 weeks. I am staying optimistic and will update when I more info or if anyone has any questions...

How did you choose between bypass and sleeve?
annasr08 replied to annasr08's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only reason why I am back and forth is because of the long term results. Everything I have read and what the surgeon said at the info session was that there wasn't as much data long term as there is with the bypass Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
2 to 3 months for sure. 4 weeks is nowhere near enough time to fully recover from ANY surgery. No matter what surgery I have had - 4 shoulder surgeries, hysterectomy, gastric bypass - they all take a minimum of 6 weeks to start feeling more like yourself and longer in the WLS case because your body is adjusting to SO much change - hormone fluctuation, dramatic drop in calorie intake, switch from carbs for energy to Protein for energy, just the energy it takes to flush the fat from your body, etc. Give it time. You will get there and you won't even remember this time!!

Round 1 million 1
kcuster83 replied to SeattleLady's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Is your revision from sleeve to bypass? Don't worry, for what I hear and read on here the recovery is almost identical. In addition, the pre-op and post-op diets are just about the same too. I had bypass. 10 day limited pre-op diet. Post-op was 2 weeks clear/full liquids, 2 weeks pureed foods, 2 weeks soft foods and then slowly transition back to a normal diet. Take it slow, test new foods 1 at a time so if you get sick you know exactly what caused it. You got this! -
My boyfriend and I just started dating he had gastric bypass surgery 3 months ago. I have a degree in culinary arts and am trying to develop new recipes/ideas for us. I too want to transition to his diet so we both live healthier lives. Any recipes, suggestions, or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going with sleeve over gastric bypass for all the reasons that PDxMan came up with, also I have a problem with adhesions and serious scar tissue. I get diverticulitis and have been known to develop polyps. I also have Lupus. I need all the nutrients I can get, and I can't afford to lose any intestines and I want less issues with adhesions related to my intestines. With Lupus there is greater issues with the pancreas and the kidneya and there's the lovely issues with hair loss. For someone like me, sleeve is a safer surgery. I realize that I may lose "quicker" with gastric bypass" but this diet is for life, and I'm not looking for the "quick" weight loss, I'm looking for the healthiest and the most permanent weight loss. If you go back to eating the way you used to, you are going to gain weight with gastric bypass or the sleeve, for me sleeve is the safest option.

I am 6 weeks post op gastric bypass surgery tomorrow. I have very little energy. I'm getting 60gms of Protein and my liquids. I meet with surgeon tomorrow. My fellow support group people said to be patient. I can't do simple tasks like planting flowers. Anyone experience this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Interested in Lap Band, but surgeon recommended RNY over LapBand
debi717 replied to debi717's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks, Em. 100+ pounds is a scary number -- a little overwhelming. Makes me want to cry sometimes. I guess the RNY has appeal because of the speedier weight loss. I'm looking to do WLS so I can have quality of life. Losing weight won't help me if I end up being sick all the time, which can happen. My sister has a friend who has been nauseous everyday of her life since she had her bypass 4 years ago. She says that if she had known then what she knows now, she'd rather be fat. Really gives me something to think about. -
Getting the bypass today and super nervous! They are prepping me now and freaking lol. Wish me luck!

I was banded in 2006 and had issues from 2008 on but did keep the majority of my weight off. During that time I got the works done, lbl, arms, thighs and breasts. Then sept 2012 I became I expectantly pregnant. My band went haywire when I was about 4 months and never went back to normal. Between pregnancy and complete unfill I gained 45lbs. Surprisingly, my tummy fared well and only new scars are those from surgery on Wednesday. I am thankful I was given the opportunity to convert to bypass and will enjoy it once I get passed this hump. My goal is 50 but I'd like to try for 70 just to see if I can do it
