I just cringed when I read this! Why would you trust the same surgeon? Also, you do realize your risk for complications was increased significantlyas this is your third wls and second revision. Furthermore with a tighter sleeve your far more prone to gerd, strictures and gastric torsion. Is it really worth it? Anyway, hope your okay post op

few hour before surgery ,, FREAKING OUT !
kalel51 replied to Meme_'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Deep breaths and faith that this will all work out. It is scary as hell. I sat in the bed and kept thinking what if I don't wake up? My wife was by my side and i couldn't get it out of my head that this might be my goodbye. I have a great team of doctors that help, and my surgeon was awesome. I had nothing to do but trust in them that everything was going to be all right. I don't know if it is fear of complications on the table or fear of a new life after, but after surgery for a few days it was a little surreal. Then the pounds started to come off, and I started to adjust. Just take it one day at a time, if you can't do that take it a meal at a time, and if you can't do that, take it an hour at a time or a minute at a time. Control what's going on now and the future will set itself. Good luck and Godspeed, you are going to wake up to a new life. -
Well, just sharing a little update. I have my surgery on May 2. I went to the hospital for my pre-admission testing last week. Pretty simple stuff. Lots of questions, blood work, EKG and chest X-ray. Today I had my final appointment with the surgeon. He lead a group presentation for 8 of us on all the things to expect, diet, vitamins, surgery day, complications, etc. for about an hour. We did a bunch of paperwork and took a quiz to show we actually read it and didn't just sign it without looking. Then we each had our individual appointment with him for final review and questions. Tomorrow starts my liver reduction diet, basically 4 shakes a day (I should have started yesterday) so I went to the store and got all the stuff I need (basically mellow and sugar free ice pops). I have to say, it really started to feel real when he shook my hand and said he would see me in two weeks. Today is my birthday and I feel like it is right to make this the kickoff point. I had a piece of birthday cake today and it was sort of symbolic as a goodbye to old and hello to new. I see my PCP next Tuesday and then I'm all set. Oh, except for the bowel prep (I didn't have to do a stool sample). The bowel prep I start at noon the day before surgery and basically just on clear liquids. I'm working that day so a bit nervous about when that will kick in. Eek.

I didn't have the DS or the Sleeve but I did have a RNY. I just wanted to add my 2cents worth. You hear people state that they had the Sleeve because it is less invasive. Well I think removing 80 to 85 of your stomach seems like it is pretty invasive. I have heard of lots getting revised to the RNY because of complications from their Sleeve. Lots with acid reflux. I had lost my weight in 6 months. My lowest weight was 117#'s but I did gain 8#'s back, Health wise those 8#'s made a huge difference in how I felt. So I have maintained my 125#'s for over 3 years. I know your ?'s were which surgery should I go with. If someone said I opted for the Sleeve because of the malabsorption that is a little better to swallow than not getting the RNY because it is to invasive is another thing. I know that each of us need to investigate every WLS offered. Just do yourself a favor and look at all of the offered surgeries!! Let your DR help you decide because they have been in this for qui and know which is best for you!! Sorry for blowing up your post. Have a great day!!te awhile -
Ds will in my opinion help me get to my gw of 200. However I hear people worried about the rearranged intestinal tract. Whilst the risk for complications are up for ds the research shows it has better long-term effects. I am trying to get feedback from those who have taken the journey before me.

Hi! I am also 5'11, my high weight was 460. I lost about 50 pre-op, and almost another 100 post op. But I plateaued and then started to regain. I had my surgery in 2012. I'm also having some complications now, I go see a surgeon tomorrow and may be revising to DS. The sleeve was an amazing tool and it really is my fault that I didn't continue to lose with it. I fell wayyyy off post-op diet and then got pregnant. I'm currently still well below where I started at 460, but I want to lose more and since my complication will likely require surgery, I may go for DS as well so I can get back on the losing track! I opted for sleeve initially because I felt it was the best of my options and I knew there was the option to revise to DS if needed. Personally, I would recommend starting with a sleeve as post-op DS is a bit more intense because of the malapsorptive effect it has. -

Sleeve Vs Rny which is better for Pcos & Metabolic Syndrome
mlbdl replied to SleeveMe88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have PCOS and hypothyroidism. I had about 80 lbs to lose by time I had the surgery. My surgeon recommended the sleeve. I wanted the bypass. His reasons were that the results were virtually the same, but the chances of long term complications for the bypass, while low, were still much higher than the sleeve. He said if I had another 100 lbs to lose he'd recommend the bypass, but, and I quote him, "why do such a severe procedure for the same outcome?" So, I did the sleeve. I'm almost 10 months out and I've basically been at goal for 2 months. I'd like to get another 10# or so off, just for wiggle room, but I'm pretty happy here, too. I'm still on Aldactone for the hair issue, and the cysts were well controlled before the surgery with birth control (which I'm still on). Good luck with your decision! -
They are moving up my consult to April 24th. My surgery could be the week of the 9th. I hope so. I really wanted to get it done before Mother's Day as a tribute to my Mom who passed away on Nov1st. I had promised her in mid Oct. that I wouldn't scare her any more with my complications of extreme weight. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using BariatricPal mobile app

My husband was in the hospital four days due to a complication and had been told to take the CPap. He never was asked to use the CPap, and since the sleeve four years ago he has not needed or used it. He no longer snores since he lost 100 lbs.

Weight loss vs fertility treatments
Lauren PB replied to kristin16666's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey Kristin. My husband and I have been trying for over 4 yrs. I went through 5 IUIS and an IVF. My highest weight was 320, and then went down to 275ish on my own I decided to go through gastric sleeve. I have PCOS and had polyps in my uterus. My surgeon told me as I lose the weight PCOS symptoms should decrease and fertility should increase, hopefully. Plus I would be a healthier mother for my child and little to no complications during pregnancy. Believe me I want a child more than anything I'm 32 yrs old and my surgeon says I shouldn't try again for 18 months so I will be 33 and half when I start again. Do not give up. I say go through the weight loss surgery, it will make thing easier and from there try again for that baby. My mom had me at 38 going on 39 and my sister at 41 going on 42 . I don't know if I will get pregnant in the end, but I know I will have done everything in my power to try and conceive. My husband and I are also putting money aside each month for adoption in case we choose that route. I want to be a mom more than anything. And trust me I know how hard it aches to want to be a mom. If you ever want to talk let me know. ♡. My email is lmpangburn41785@aol.com. -
I had the Roux-En-Y on 20 October 2016 and I bounced right back. No pain meds, no complications, no issues (other than eating too fast or not chewing my food enough). I will be 6 months out on Thursday and I am currently at my surgeon's weight loss goal for me. Everyone is different, some bounce right back, some do not. Some lose the weight rapidly, some lose it slowly. Everyone's weight loss experience seems to be different.

Bariatric surgery only makes your stomach smaller, otherwise you're exactly the same
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Greensleevie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don't think there's much to learn from this 4 year old blog. It's pretty obvious that one should get rid of their psychological problems before having surgery. Not only do they stand to mess up (counteract) their surgery but complicate any revision if possible. It takes willpower to transition to that, I just find it easy given the health problems I have and the desire to be healthy again drowning out any voices of wanting to eat crap. One has to treat the addition like life and death and take control of it, not to mention change their mindset about food as something of comfort to something only essential for survival. It's not easy for many people, which is why they go down the road of eating crap early on post-op and wind up screwing up their WLS. Hell, how often do we see alcoholics on the verge of their liver being cirrhotic not stop? Sometimes people are just too far gone to help, and certainly some of those people are here, they won't learn, and they're destined for failure. Addicts also tend to lash out when people confront them with the harsh reality of life decisions. -
Crohn's Disease and Gastric Bypass
LivsMum replied to angbet's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have Ulcerative Colitis and had gastric bypass surgery on January 23rd. No complications and have been successful. In fact, my UC has never been so controlled. To date, I am down 55lbs. Happy to answer any specific questions you may have. Best of luck on your journey. -
I was thinking of older wls and with a google search ran into a forum for folks who had the VBG. Reading the stories of folks who are dealing with complications 10 and 20 years was scary!

Puppy200101 replied to Puppy200101's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I do have help with the kiddies so I'm not worried about that. I also have a plan if there are complications. Thank you also for your comments on the protein shakes/powders. I will start trying different types. Thank you! -

Berry78 replied to Puppy200101's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Find someone to drive you home from the hospital. Do you have help with your kids? Do you have a plan in case of complications? The preop diets vary according to surgeons. No biggie having differences. The post op diet is super-duper important. Life or death stuff. Try various protein powders and shakes, but don't stock up because your tastes might change after surgery. -

I wonder if your pcp knowing about the procedure would be allowed to sign the papers. I know mine would probably tell me I'm crazy lol. She wasn't that on board with me having weight loss surgery either. I like her but she's very conservative with any treatments and I'm considering changing bit my surgery is May 31. Is like to be done with all of that before I look into a new doctor in case of complications she already knows me. I already know I'll need plastic surgery on my belly though. -
The sleeve is generally a faster surgery than bypass (usually takes about 30 minutes less than bypass depending on the patient's anatomy and the doctor) which means you're under anesthesia for a shorter period of time. It's also a simpler surgery (if any surgery can ever be considered simple) because the doctor doesn't have to do any re-routing of the intestines like they would with a bypass. With that said, it's still surgery, and being done on overweight people who usually have at least 1 other significant health condition which will increase risks for complications regardless of the type of procedure they're having done. These risks aren't over once you "wake up" - you're at risk for blood clots, bleeding, leaks, etc. for weeks and even months after surgery. That's why it's important to find a surgeon you trust and ask them lots of questions until you're comfortable making a decision about whether you feel the benefits outweigh the risks. When you meet with your surgeon, ask them specifically about their outcomes. All surgeons need to report deaths that occur during or after surgery (I think up to a month after surgery but I could be wrong on that one).
-
I am not sure abut deaths from being put to sleep. But yes, there are reported deaths from complications like leaks and blood clots. Check pubmed and do a search. The gastric sleeve is a simpler surgery than the bypass but not less invasive. It's a major surgery with significant risks.

I'm not nervous really, just anxious to get it over with! I have two small kids and so I just want it to be done and come out with no complications! My preop is this morning! How about you!?

Has Anyone Kept Their Surgery A Secret?

What kind of complications did you have if you don't mind me asking? What kind of complications did you have if you don't mind me asking? -
So stupid question, I know gastric sleeve is safer and that's there are risks and complications with everything (in general) but has there ever been reports of death during gastric sleeve surgery , being put to sleep and never waking up ?

Clear liquids tomorrow, then Sleeving on Tuesday
Ashley34 replied to Chris Lee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been worrying about complications post surgery. It may sound silly, but I'm terrified of heart burn. I had severe heart burn during pregnancy and I don't think I want to live with that daily. I try to remind myself the effects of morbid obesity will be worse for me long term. I actually had someone bring up bariatric surgery negatively at a family Easter gathering. She was questioning her friends choice of wanting the surgery since she knew her friend lost 20 pounds on weight watchers. "She should just exercise and eat right since I know she can lose it if she wants to. Seems like the easy way out. " I internally rolled my eyes and said there's nothing easy about surgery. I'm in month 5 of pre op. I haven't told a lot of people yet because I don't ned their negativity. Good luck with your surgery 💜
