How to shrink your liver (and increase ST weight loss) – the low-carb, pre-op diet
Bjornsyouruncle replied to SeattleSweetie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've low carbed a lot to control my PCOS, so I'm pretty comfortable following the regime. I don't tend to eat a lot of processed foods because I have 2 small children and I like for them to have homemade meals, so I used fitday.com to enter in my ingredients and used the nutritional information they supplied. My menu from yesterday is: Breakfast: 2 egg mushroom omelet: 196 calories, 6 carbs, 14 grams Protein Snack: 3 large strawberries and 3 slices of starfruit: 19 calories, 5 carbs Lunch: 4 shish kebabs (8 ounces of steak, 1/2 cup sliced summer squash, 1/2 cup zucchini, 1/2 of sliced mushrooms, a little bit of onion): 452 calories, 8 carbs, 65 grams protein Dinner: Homemade Thai inspired lettuce cups (6, using Boston lettuce, 1.25 cups ground beef cooked with diced straw mushrooms, baby corn, and peanut sauce (chicken stock, soy sauce, natural Peanut Butter with no added sugar, chili, ginger, and other spices): 653 calories, 4 carbs, 39 grams protein. Dessert: 1/2 cup Plain yogurt, sweetened with Splenda: 75 calories, 6 carbs, 4 grams protein Daily totals: 1395 calories, 29 carbs (6 of which are fiber), and 122 grams protein. Tuna salad is also really good in lettuce cups, especially if you sprinkle some seeds on it for crunch. I like to use pumpkin seeds. -
Bad taste in mouth/disgusted with good?
DandelionSun replied to destructapie's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just started soft foods and have had the hardest time with things tasting burnt. The bone broths that I loved prior to surgery taste horrible so I rely on protein shakes, eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cheese and I found a no sugar jerky at Target that I can tolerate. All that dairy is hard on the bowels so I still take my stool softener from time to time. Last night I was trying to get my second shake in and I just couldn’t do. All of a sudden there was this thick clot of something in my mouth - I think the shake was building up on my tongue or something. I had to go in and scrape my tongue with a spoon to get all the buildup of the protein shake off. It was gross and I couldn’t finish the shake after that. -
Yeah I have. They just tell me to keep doing what im doing (eggs, yogurt) ive seen on here protein shots and I think ill try them. Know anything about their taste?

Hi I'm looking to find a good yogurt that's sugar free or some with very little if any surgery that's recommended by your nutritionist after surgery
-
Unfortunately, nothing sweet is a problem for me. Only problem is sometimes I eat something cold like frozen yogurt too early in the day and it tightened the band....makes it contract. Maybe that's why you're bringing it up. Happened to me today for the first time. As for visiting home- I just did the same and I'll tell you what I think. You (and I) did not lose the weight for anyone back home. We did it for ourselves and the only extension might be our spouses. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks and anyone who doesn't tell you that you look amazing....can go straight to...."gehenom"! You may find that after a while of hearing nothing but how much you've changed and how great you look, that you get a little annoyed- I did. It was like, enough, already. But that was from friends. I have a mother who is German Jewish, and kind words generally come with a zinger- so if you have that kind of relative, or if there are those who might be jealous, etc...you're just gonna have to blow them off. I have a GOOD friend, who told me how amazing I look.....and I should really now invest in better bras! What the %#&@&? I told her that I know she means well (I'm not really so sure by the way) but please, if you have a compliment give it and leave it at that. My mother is the best at taking a compliment away, but I take it from her and just forget it, but I won't with anyone else. No left-handed compliments- I told my friend if she doesn't have something nice to say, say nothing at all. That my honest advise for you. Have a great trip and stick with those who really care about and "see" the real you.

Hi- I'm new to the site but have been banded for 5 years
sandi2004 replied to sandi2004's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
if you can't find my contact info check these things: 1. are you getting enough protein? 60 - 80 grams per day? 2. are you getting enough fluids (water) - 64 ounces per day? 3. Is there sugar in some of the things you are eating? That can make you hungry an hour after you eat? (yogurt is a big culprit int he sugar area) 4. Are you waiting 1/2 hour before and 1/2 hour after you eat to drink any liquids? Also, your surgical site where the band is has probably healed, all of the swelling is probably gone and you just don't have any restriction yet. Your first fill will help with that.. It is not unusual to be feeling hunger a month or so after surgery before your first fill. -

Help! Protein is killing me!
georgiabelle replied to rhondafranklin03's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I bought some unflavored Protein powder and have been adding it to SF pudding. The light & fit vanilla greek yogurt is pretty good and has 12 g. protein. I also found some liquid Protein shots at Walmart yesterday. http://www.walmart.com/ip/New-Whey-Grape-Liquid-Protein-42g-3.8-fl-oz-6-count/22410444 They are REALLY sweet, so I dilute it with Water and use it like Crystal Light. -
May 28-31st Sleeve Week!
WhoKnows replied to lylabelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, after being cut on the 28th, I'm home now! I was discharged yesterday and I feel pretty good. Incisions still suck, but I'm able to get in all my liquids and I can do purees. I'm getting way sick of Protein drinks though; some other people mentioned being fed up with sweet stuff, and I hear that! All I want is something savory. My last day in the hospital they gave me mashed potatoes and it was truly awesome. Of course, that's not the sort of thing I'll be making for myself at home, but it was nice! And @@hrhlaurie, you're not the only one who didn't get a leak test. My surgeon said he does the one while before they stitch you up, but doesn't do a swallow test because of the two leaks he's ever seen, one happened too soon to be caught by the test and the other happened too late, so he just doesn't see the point. Fair enough I guess. I mean, I wouldn't have minded doing one, but I trust his judgement, and since I'm feeling so good (relatively speaking), I think I'll know if something is wrong. I also had my first BM today (yay for bathroom talk!). It was teeny tiny, which doesn't surprise me, since I've eaten probably less than 1/4 cup of actual food since Tuesday. But today all I want is something savory and not made from instant powders like at the hospital! So, I'm gonna make some black bean Soup and puree it, then mix in some pumpkin seed protein, and instead of sour cream I'll do a dollop of quark (something common here in Germany that is sort of like Greek Yogurt, and tend to be eaten on potatoes; also very high in protein and low in fat). My surgeon said for now I can eat about three tablespoons at once, so I'll just freeze the rest in ice cube trays, and I should be set for food for a while, even if I half the recipe. I'm gonna save a bundle on food! -
5 days post op can't do all liquid diet. Anyone else do okay on soft foods?
samuelsmom replied to nugirl402's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When healing it is important to think long and hard about what you eat. O full liquids, greek yogurt is included so that is fine. Once you get past that, things get a little dicey. You will find that surgeons do the post op eating plans a little different because there is no proven "right" way to do it. That being said there are a few things that are constant MOST of the time- the first week after surgery usually ranges between liquids and a very soft consistency (like a scrambled egg) depending on the surgeon. Progress from one stage to another is slow and as tolerated with the understanding that we all heal at different rates. I have not heard of one plan that allows bacon in the first week! I would highly recommend talking with the nutritionist and the surgeon. I would also highly recommend not eating bacon so soon post-op. It is an unnecessary risk. -

This may be booming late in the day, but why not just find some protein shake that you like? I really don't mind the Premier Protein, there are other types/brands. You could also find some Pacific Coast Bone Broth, that has 14 grams of protein per serving. The yogurt is prolly premature, but try kefir. Creamy soups? I hear your frustration, though. I chewed up a piece of pepperoni and spit it out in the sink on day 8. -
Greek Yogurt making me burp....anyone else?
remzel posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never had a taste for yogurt before, especially greek yogurt but as it's such a great source of Protein, an easy meal and can be a great vessel - I figured I'd give it a try for lunch today. I got the Fage total 0% with Honey. I dont want all the sugars from the honey, but I figured it would be a good way to ease into the yogurt since it helps mask the flavor. I've had a few bites and now I'm burping like crazy and keep feeling the gas bubbles rise up [and of course, I'm at work where this looks/sounds even better]. Anyone else experience this? Did it go away over time or did you cut out yogurt? I know my sleeve might not like everything, but yogurt just seems too good of an option to give up right away. Thoughts/suggestions? -
when I was pregnant I used to eat plain yogurt and dip kit-kat bars in the yogurt .... When I was little I used to eat dog biscuts ,sick huh ?

Beauty Queen Weight Loss Skeptic
KellyL replied to Sleevie WonderLand's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No judgement here because i have the same exact thoughts!!! I am not trying to be critical, it's just like even with Aretha Franklin and Drew Carey. 80-100 lbs, and they just suddenly after yrs and yrs of being big are successful at losing that kind of weight? I am sure by now, Aretha has lost even more, it's been a few months since I first saw her. I watched a talk show with Drew and he said he's going to just say "80" lost, because he lost more but has had a slight regain since his original loss. He talked about changing his eating, watching his carbs, eating things like greek yogurt.. I don't judge them either, and I guess after reading how many people on these forums keep their surgeries a secret, then a celebrity has just as much right to their privacy and they are stalked by the paparazzi so much and judged and critiqued publicly so much, so they probably want to keep their privacy even more than the average joe. And we've all seen how they do people like Carnie Wilson in the media. So it's no wonder!! But I am still very curious about the truth, because of my own journey. I know it's possible with their $ to hire personal trainers and nutritionists and chefs, but it does seem odd that it seems to be happening only in the last yr or so that we are seeing all these celebrity transformations. Regardless of the method, I am very very happy for them despite my suspicion lol. I always love seeing weight loss success. I love watching shows like Extreme Makeover, Weight loss edition, but I have mixed emotions with it. I am excited for the loss they have but I worry on their ability to keep up the exercise routines they have to keep. I do think some kind of exercise is helpful, beneficial, and sometimes vital to our health, regardless our weight. But 4-5 hrs a day?? When they get back to their own lives, no one is making them do this stuff, no one is buying and providing them with their groceries, etc. I worry about their well-being and emotional health and what failing after the show will do to their self esteem if they are unable to maintain. Sometimes I like the show cuz the guy seems to really care, but then sometimes I feel it's no more than a circus/freak show when he makes a big deal on the scales he has to use to weigh them at their starting weight. I know they get trips, exercise machines, cars, groceries bought for them, but can he at least not humiliate them on tv? Can't they do the weighing and just tell what the starting weight is without making them disrobe with all the rolls hanging out and stress they can't use a reg scale. I guess I know how i would feel in the same situation. But I guess they feel it makes good tv and that's why they do it. Anything for good ratings, right? I need to submit this post before i really get to ranting hahahaha -
I have tried a Chobani and Fage (both baby/kid and adult) several times, several different flavors and they are all nasty. I can't stand the sour after taste. However, yesterday I tried Yopait and it was by far the best. It was very mild. Tasted closer to the regular Yopait yogurt that a Greek style yogurt, but with all the benifits of the protein. I tried the blueberry one. It's is very thick so I think I might add a little milk to thin it out. They make them is two different sizes. I got the smaller one (4 oz cup), which was the perfect size for early sleevers. Contains 8g of protein. The 6 oz container has 12 grams of protein.

Fage 0 is my fav. It's available at my costco. I also liked Kirkland Fatfree Plain Greek Yougurt, but my Costco no longer carries it. My two fav ways to eat greek yogurt: Smoothie: Blend the amount of yogurt you can eat (at 2 months I could do 1/2 cup, now I can do 1 cup), some Splenda, a splash of OJ, 1/4 cup Water, and a couple of frozen berries. Yum! Yogurt parfait: Stir some water into the amount of yogurt you can eat (at 2 months I could do 1/2 cup, now I can do 1 cup) to make it a thinner conistency. Stir in Splenda to taste. Top with Splenda-sweetened berries. I buy the big bag of mixed berries from Costco and defrost 1/2 cup then stir in a couple tablespoons of Splenda. Lynda ("Greek Yogurt helped get me to goal!")

I am on full liquids and yesterday i dreamed up a Tzatziki-inspired yogurt drink (I'm sick of the sweet stuff). I added a scoop of unflavoured Protein powder to a small pot of Fage 0%, a few mint leaves, a chunk of de-skinned cucumber, a tespoon of garlic paste, squeeze of lemon and a little bit of Water to thin it out. It was 30g of protein and SO good. The flavours completely masked the Protein Powder taste and so it went down a treat- my new go-to drink! Fage is also great with a little splenda sweetener, and vanilla essence.

Healthy snack ideas for your hungry stomach. For many of us, snack time is when we lose control of our diets, either by overeating, or by indulging in high-fat, high-calorie foods. This often happens because we allow ourselves to get too hungry and then are unable to stop ourselves from overeating, says Dee Sandquist, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association and manager of the Nutrition and Diabetes Center at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington. To avoid getting too hungry, Sandquist says she recommends always carrying a healthy, portable snack with you when you know you'll be out on the run without easy access to healthy food choices. Try getting at least two food groups in each of those Snacks so that you're getting a combination of carbohydrates and fat/protein, which will help keep you satiated longer, she adds. Here, some super snack food ideas: Plain Yogurt with Blueberries - Pair plain yogurt with blueberries for a sweet treat that has a similar texture to ice cream. Yogurt is a great source of Calcium and Protein, and blueberries are packed with valuable antioxidants that help fight off heart disease. If fresh blueberries aren't in season, try frozen instead they work great in cool, creamy yogurt. Or if you get bored with blueberries, substitute any other frozen fruit like cranberries or cherries. Recommended Serving Size: Plain, low-fat yogurt, 1/2 cup, 56 calories Blueberries, 2/3 cup, 30 calories banana with Almond Butter - This combination will keep you satiated for a longer time than either on their own because of the combination of Fiber in the banana and protein and fat in the almond butter. Bananas are also an excellent source of potassium, which helps prevent muscle cramps and is essential for normal brain function. Of course, Peanut Butter would be a great substitute for almond butter. Recommended Serving Size: Medium banana, 95 calories Almond butter, 1 tablespoon, 101 calories Hummus with Pita Bread - Made from chickpeas, hummus provides protein, fiber, and carbohydrates. Spread hummus on pita bread for some added carbohydrates. Also try putting some veggies on your bread to make a great sandwich. Recommended Serving Size: Hummus, 2 tablespoons, 83 calories Pita bread, 1 round, 195 calories Apple with Brie cheese - Stick to a small amount of cheese with this snack because of brie's high saturated fat content. However, brie does offer a good protein source. Apples have a low glycemic index, which means they keep hunger at bay longer than other fruits. Recommended Serving Size: Apple, 47 calories Brie cheese, 2 ounces, 160 calories Salsa w/ Baked Tortilla chips - Ingredients in salsa vary greatly, but most tomato-based vegetable salsas are an excellent source of antioxidants, Vitamin C, and lycopene, which helps prevent heart disease and some cancers. Avoid high-calorie fried chips by purchasing the baked varieties instead, and be sure to look for varieties that list zero trans fats on their nutrition labels. Recommended Serving Size: Salsa, 2 ounces, 20 calories Baked tortilla chips, 1 ounce, 120 Light Microwave Popcorn - Although this is a single-food snack, Sandquist says she recommends it because of its high fiber and B vitamin content. Plus, who can resist the smell of popcorn? Recommended Serving Size: 1 cup, 30 calories

Liquid diet wearing me down

I cannot have any solids. Except cottage cheese, if you call that a solid. What I would do for a raw veggie right now. Yogurt and chicken broth is getting old. -

Inner Surfer Girl replied to Aribay1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
To measure food, start with reading labels. If you are eating anything packaged the serving size/amount is on the label. You can use measuring cups, spoons, and a food scale to measure everything else. Ex. One single-serve container of yogurt just read the label. One serving out of a tub of yogurt you can use a measuring cup or measuring spoons. An app like MyFitnessPal is great because you can look up all kinds of foods (restaurant meals, name breads, and even homemade foods). You can also add your own if you have your own recipes, etc. Protein is so critical. Even if you don't focus on other things, at least making sure you count your protein so you get enough will be a big help for you. My protein goal is 100 grams a day. If I didn't track it in MyFitnessPal, I would never be able to keep up with how much I had and how much I still needed. My memory isn't that good. -
Sorry for the copy/paste. I don't prepare dishes as it's just me. Kids are out of the house so not feeding a family. I do 6 mini meals a day. Some stand bys for me are hot choc /decaf (15g) . 2 light mozzarella string cheese (12g). Chobani Lemon Greek Yogurt (15g). Boars Head Ever-roast deli Chicken 2 oz (13g). Al Fresco chicken sausage (14g). Morningstar Spicy Black Bean Burger (11g).1 pouch tuna/1/2 c 1% cottage cheese (31g). Gortons Simply Bake Tilapia (20g). Unjury protein powder 1 scoop/8 oz skim milk (29g) and sometimes I add 2 T of PB2 which brings it to 34g. Each one of these standbys is 1 mini meal for me. I don't have room for anything after eating it. Don't eat them all on the same day but keep my cals under 900 for the day. I shoot for 90g a day. Sorry for the run on paragraph. My enter key is not working ONLY on this website. Have contacted Alex/Tech but no solution yet.

Can I increase my protein this way?
OutsideMatchInside replied to reachbree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think there is a limit to how much protein the body can absorb, there is a limit to how much it needs for muscle repair. The rest goes into energy. http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/healthy-eating/know-your-nutrients/how-much-protein-can-the-body-absorb @@reachbree - I still mix some unflavored in my flavored mix. That is just personal taste. I also add a little unflavored to my yogurt. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery website says... Q: Can I take all of the protein in one dose? A: Protein should be taken in multiple doses, across multiple meals or healthy Snacks. The body cannot absorb more than approximately 30 grams at once. Also, protein is a nutrient that helps us feel fuller, longer. If we try to include Proteins in each of our meals or healthy snacks, we’re less likely to feel hungry when it’s not time to eat. https://asmbs.org/patients/life-after-bariatric-surgery My Dr made very clear that the body can only absorb so much at one time. There is a reason we take Vitamins apart, not just because some of them interact badly with each other. -
Increasing to 90 grams of Protein?! WTH!
OKCPirate replied to JennsJourney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do a couple of eggs and meat in the morning, but I put pipingrock.com unflavored Protein powder in my coffee. I do a greek yogurt around 10:30 with more powder. If you do that, it will get you around 25 more grams per day. A few ounces of meat 2 hours before or after dinner will get you to that goal. -
Okay, was sleeved May 28 so almost 4 weeks. Husband bought me this kickass blender and said I should have more fun with coming up with new shake ideas.... So, here's what I did; 1/2 cup egg white (5p/100cal) 1 scoop New Whey Vanilla (30p/100cal) 2 scoop Ensira Chocolate (24p/200cal) 1 cup Greek yogurt plain (23p/120cal) 1 cup Almond milk Unsweetned Vanilla (1p/30 cal) 1 Tsp Chocolate SF pudding mix and 1/2 tsp vanilla 1/2 banana I figure this is 83 to 85 Protein and 550 cal. Since I'm only 4 weeks out and still liquid/soft food only and I thought this was a sure thing. Thoughts please..... need to know if this is good idea. I plan on using the SF pudding and jello mixes for flavor fun
