How Many Grams Of Protein Are Your Doctors Suggesting?
lsereno replied to readyforachange's topic in Food and Nutrition
I get in at least 65 a day and it was probably around 4-5 months out before I could do so without a shake or Protein supplement. I eat greek yogurt for Breakfast every day and that really helps. I still need a protein shake sometimes when I'm traveling. here's a typical day for me at 9.5 months: Wake up and have a soy latte (8-9 grams of protein, depending on the soy milk I use) Breakfast: Cup of non-fat Fage plain greek yogurt, 1 slice whole wheat toast, 1/3 cup fruit (23 grams protein for the yogurt, 3-4 grams for the toast) lunch and Dinner: 3 oz. of solid protein and some vegetables. A little starch if I have room. (15-22 grams of protein depeding on whether I eat lunch meat, light cheese, chicken breast, shellfish, etc) Favorite protein snacks: light cheese, beef Jerky, light salami, soy milk in a latte or sweetened with sugar free syrup. Family plunged into panic mode :(
Teachamy replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So sorry you are going through this! I would suggest adding a Protein shake, a yogurt, a Protein Bar, or at least a handful of nuts to carry you through a workout. I am diabetic and I know first hand that low blood sugars are no fun. Even a glass of milk would be helpful--good carbs and protein. Your body is telling you you need more. Maybe just 16 oz. of milk would be enough? I know you're an expert at all this stuff, so I know you know all the answers, but what is your weight goal including plastics? Does your medical team agree? I know you will come through it all! -
http://www.fageusa.com/products/fage-total-classic/ this is a link to "Fage" plain yogurt. 190 calories, 10 g fat but 8 g sugar. What is better for us? Do we concentrate on fat or sugar? The Fage turns my tummy, and I was so excited about the oiko's brand type to have found greek yogurt with more Protein that I could eat. I like the 130 calories and 0 fat with oiko's but now the 18 g of sugars has me bothered...what do you all think? Thanks
-
Greek Yogurt can be too thick, but I've got a tip for making it creamier: Just add a little Water and stir. I use the Fage 0, which has 23 grams of Protein and 130 calories per cup, and stir in a little water and some splenda. I like to top it with some berries sweetened with splenda. Lynda

Sleeved 8/23/16 - HW 271.5 (4/16) SW 246.9 CW 205.1 From size 20-22 pants to size 14-12 right now. About 50 pounds to goal. If you are not already using it, use My Fitness Pal and track every ounce of food and Water that goes into your body. It keeps you honest. I weigh myself daily. (Some people do weekly but I find daily keeps me honest.) Make sure you have healthy options in the house so you never have to be looking around for a snack. Try different kinds of Protein powders now in the small sample sizes to see which ones you like or don't like and start experimenting with shakes. Pre-surgery for three months I did a Protein shake every morning for Breakfast -- and worked on playing with flavors, fruit, coffee-house syrups, etc. Start exercising - walk around the block, swim, join a gym. move your body and schedule time for it. Plan rewards for various weight goals -- 25 pounds - new lipstick? 50 pounds - new dress? Start a private pinterest board with fashions you want to try as you get thinner Research thrift and consignment shops in your area - you are going to need them. If you don't have a good scale, buy one. (I have a Withings, which sends my weight directly to My Fitness Pal. Consider purchasing a fitness tracker. (I use a Garmin Vivosmart HR and love it. I think it's much better than the Fitbit models.) Get your head in the right place - the surgery isn't going to solve any problem you may have with emotional eating - if that's part of your issue, get help now - work with a therapist or other counselor. Get a good pair of sneakers. Start by walking a little more now. Park 15 spaces away from the grocery store this week. 25 spaces next week. It's all incremental. Protein is your friend. Start counting your grams of protein. After surgery, your rules will likely be protein first, everything else after. I average 60-90 grams of protein a day and I eat about 800 calories a day now. Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt and Fairlife Skim Milk are your friends. I'm at the point now where I can eat anything, even bread, but I don't. Sometimes I'll have half a slice of whole wheat toast. Barilla makes a high protein Pasta (yellow box) which is really good. Once you get a surgery date, find a group here on BP to chat with that are all having surgery in the same month. Attend your hospital or clinic's support group meetings regularly. Best of luck with finding the new you. I wish I had done this 15 years ago.

Useful pre-op things?
cfergie911 replied to cfergie911's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try diet v8 juice tropical blend flavor w/1scoop of plain protein use shaker bottle,it mixes easy &taste great w/20grams of protein per scoop. Try it before surgery even w/berry flavor ,also sold at Wal-Mart for $2 bottle. For my pre-op diet any protein drink that I have has to has less than 6 grams of carbs. I might try the unflavored protein in yogurt. -
Meganliz0824, I feel ya man. I am 10 days post op and for four days I have stepped forward a week and have been having yogurt and cream of wheat. I am supposed to still be on Clear Liquids. I am thinking that since I tolerate it it's ok. I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing. I just wasn't satisfied and was hungry. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts. I have felt great through this whole process I am sick of isopure drinks. I have also had premier Protein shakes and not supposed to yet. I don't know the answer and I really don't want to screw this up. Liamnatx, thanks for the great ideas!!!!

Can't Keep Yogurt Down...feeling Weak And Sad.
JennJ.RN replied to wannabb08's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cottage cheese has 11-12 gms of protein per 1/2 cup. I will eat this if I am low on protein. (but I have always liked it..) Maybe worth a shot? Greek yogurt with a packet of sweetener and some cinnamon is good too!! -
I never feel full...
RuthFour replied to DarthVixen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 3 months post op and I also forget to eat. I'm going to be seeing the nutritionist for the first time after surgery in two weeks and now is definitely the time. Not only do I forget to eat (and drink enough water) but it seems to be so much work to get in the Protein drinks which I still supplement with because there's no way I can get enough protein otherwise. I still have a tendency to eat too fast which can cause nausea but it could be lack of Water as well. It's a work in progress for sure. I start the day with a Protein Drink and often that's more than I can handle for Breakfast. Sometimes I'll have eggs (2) for lunch or crackers and cheese or yogurt and fruit with granola/cereal. Another protein drink and then supper. Not sure whether I'm getting enough calories or perhaps the wrong calories. Hopefully, the nutritionist can give me some ideas. Ruth -
Pre-op weight 220lbs or under
theshrinkingchef replied to Gintobethin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try to find shakes with higher protein count, especially if you can't drink as much. I know you said whey protein is making you nauseus but try. It's very important that you get that protein. Are you on soft stuff yet? Greek yogurt is high in protein. Met-rx protein plus has 51g per serving. -
How are your taste buds? I had back surgery 3 weeks ago. About 3 days post-op, my tongue was splotchy. Didn't think too much about it. Couple days later, I couldn't taste a thing and my mouth and throat began to hurt. Called the Dr and they said it was thrush. I googled some images and sure enough, that was it. They gave me a prescription for an anti-fungal and about 5 days later, I was back to "normal". Thrush is normally seen in nursing infants. While I was disappointed I didn't acquire this condition through nursing, the Dr office explained it can also be caused by intubation during surgery as it can contribute to an inbalance of the micro-organisms in the mouth. Basically, it is a yeast infection in the mouth. Yeah, I know ... gross. Got yogurt?

I can't imagine how knee pain could be related to the band, unless you're very, very fresh postop. In that case, operating table positioning could be a factor. Also, if you're freshly postop and guarding your abdominal muscles due to pain, this can affect posture and gait, thereby requiring you to use your legs/knees differently. This, too, can result in pain issues. For my knee pain, ice is tremendously helpful. (Heat feels better, but ice works better.) I can't take NSAIDs (not just because of the band, but because of allergy), so the only pain meds available to me are actually not terribly effective. The best "medicine," by far, has been losing weight and consistently exercising. For the latter, it would be a good idea to get a physical therapy referral (after a good assessment of the knees by an orthopedist to rule out any issues that might preclude PT, or guide the prescription), so that you can learn exercises that target the area. The recommendation for glucosamine/condroitin is a good one. Be aware, though, that glucosamine can skew blood sugar. For diabetics, this can be a real problem. For nondiabetics, it can trigger hunger as blood sugar rises then plummets. Just something to be aware of. The cherries previously mentioned do have antiinflammatory properties. They need to be dark tart cherries. I avoid dried because their sugars are so much more concentrated. But Dole's frozen dark cherries do the trick for me. Just ten cherries makes a difference. Two other good additions for inflammation: flax seed and fish oil. For flax seed, do NOT buy the oil or already-ground seeds. The oils oxidizes very rapidly, and loses its Omega benefits. You're left with a perfectly nice oil (or nice seed meal), but the most important properties for inflammation will have dissipated before you even get home. Instead, buy whole seeds, and crack or grind them right before using. (I use a coffee grinder.) A tablespoon a day in your yogurt or sprinkled on a salad can really help with inflammation issues. Fish oil does the same thing. A combined EPA+DHA level of 1,200-1,500 mg is a good starting place; you can work up to around 6,000-8,000 mg/day.

Please Help Me, I Think I'm The Only One That Has Failed This Surgery
Supersweetums replied to loveit1222's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most greek yogurts have fairly equal protein levels. I eat a 2% fat one, you can also get 0% and you can get higher. The key is to stay away from the flavored ones. Typically, they are sweetened with sugar and higher in calories and carbs. I buy plain and sweeten it myself with sugar free syrups (torani, davinci) and a little liquid stevia. You are early out, take this time to learn new ways of eating. I am a firm believer that if you do not change anything, you will not be successful in the long term. However, you have to make changes you can live with for a lifetime. Good Luck! -
Kellster, What do you do with the yogurt...I mean I know you eat it but is it plain? Do you put anything in it?Thanks, Cali

40's New Beginnings
michkhzouz replied to LosingItForMe2011's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Well, I'm turning 40 in two months so I think I'm close enough to join.... I had my surgery Nov 19 and haven't had any problems. Today I have officially lost 40lbs. There have been so many wonderful benefits and I am so happy I had this done. However, I still can't really eat much other than shakes, broth, and malt I meal. But I am finding new things to help everyday. Jamba Juice has a light menu with a sugar free yogurt blend that is fabulous. I can do decaf coffee with soy from most coffee places although I found Srarbucks decaf sits the best. I have been pretty moody but I am hoping that evens out and strangely my face has been breaking out quite a bit. I'm guessing it is low energy and hormones going crazy. Anyone else? -
Band Out, Sleeve In! It's done.
Oregondaisy replied to Elisabethsew's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My friend who is getting the sleeve soon sent me some info she got from Dr. Aceves office. I was surprised to read you can move to protein shakes on day 5 as long as they are made with water and not milk. I always make mine with water. Now I am not as worried about the clear stage. I am glad I am used to eating like a bandster so it won't be that big of a shock to me. I am glad to read you got your talapia. I love that fish too. Yay for the soft stage! Do you like cottage cheese? I used to hate it until my daughter told me to mix it with yogurt. It's good that way, and would be considered soft. -
I started making small meal salads by the one month mark. I used chopped spinach instead of lettuce for a bit better nutrition along with some tomato, avo, green onion, bell pepper, carrot, snow pea (typically only 10-15g of each) along with a couple ounces of meat and a little cheese. It was great change from the standard meat, cheese and yogurt staples and kept me sane!

What is your fav breakfast, lunch and dinner now that you are banded?
Ang1982 replied to citygirl4616's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Wow! Look at the Protein in that! I will have to do some scoping out of some of the stores around here to see if I can pick some up. I'm in no rush however as during my post-op diet stages I found like two things I liked and stuck to them the entire period so for full liquids all I ate was yogurt and pudding for like 10 days haha, so I'm not rushing out to buy either any time soon -

Restriction After Almost 4 Yrs???
♥LovetheNewMe♥ replied to Gwen Kinder Slone's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sometimes I am very sensitive after a fill and it takes me almost a week before I am able to really tolerate solid foods with out feeling extremely full or Pbing a little. I have been very sensitive to the band and my fills every since I have had it, I have only had 3 fills in two years. If you can pass water without difficulty I would give it a few days and maybe just do some protein shakes, yogurt and other mushy foods. You may have some swelling since it has been a while since you had a fill. Good luck, just make sure you are taking in fluids so not to get dehydrated. -
Day 5 and zero desire for liquids especially milk
Rev Me Up! replied to Paul_Y's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are nauseous all the time, every day, you need to talk to the doctor and make sure everything is OK. Otherwise, I had an aversion to just about everything after surgery. I wasn't allowed to have dairy the first week. I couldn't stomach the Protein drinks so I did my best to stay hydrated with clear broth, decaf tea, and Water. I was also on omeprazole daily for the first few months - it was a lifesaver. Don't know how people recover without it. I started in with milk in the second week and then moved on to drinkable yogurt. I found what tased good one day would taste nasty the next. It was a constant struggle. Just do the best you can to stay hydrated. At one point, I switched to full sugar gatorade because I was seriously getting dehydrated and taking in almost zero calories - I felt like garbage. These first couple weeks are really tough, but you can do it. Make sure to chek in with the doc, though. Persistent nausea is not a normal thing. Also, check your temp - that will indicate an infection, if there is one. Good luck--
