Please share your tips for battling head hunger.
Oregondaisy replied to bandster_1007's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You can chew gum. You're just not supposed to swallow it. I chew gum sometimes when I am trying not to eat. Head hunger really is hard. Sometimes I really crave sweets. If I don't eat them, I don't crave them as much. I try to eat mainly Protein and veggies and the head hunger isn't as bad. I don't keep junk food in the house. I eat sugar free popcicles in the evening which are like 10 calories. -

Thank you for the compliment, Mishay. #1. Preparedness #2. I could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. After years of dieting, losing and gaining more back than I lost, I KNEW I would have a tool to help me keep it off. #3. Determination #4. Following EVERY rule my doctor set for me. #5. Journaling my food intake which included calories, fiber, protein grams, etc. Hope this helps!:frown: -
Hey Cloe....good question. Yup, you'll have to find whatever works for you. Some want/need to count the calories, fat, Protein etc...others don't and still others are somewhere inbetween. I don't (& refuse to) treat having the band like a diet. I will never "count" anything (other than my Water or I lose track). During the week, at work, it is relatively easy for me to get all my water in...on the wknds, it is a lot harder (ie. not sitting at my desk drinking water all day). I eat 3 meals a day and snack when I want to (try for no more than 2 Snacks a day). I just make wiser/healthier choices and eat less. The eating less is by willpower right now since I have no restriction. The eating healthier means to me trying to get more protein in (but no counting) and choosing the "healthier" carbs. Have I had some chips? yes. Have I had chocolate? Yes. But I will have a handful of chips as opposed to the whole bag or one aero bar square as opposed to the entire bar...etc etc. I do not intend on depriving myself of anything or this won't work for me in the long run and I feel angry and resentful. Oh, and of course I do exercise. A LOT. Then again, I always have exercised a lot...but it didnt do much (mostly because of the PCOS). So far, everything is working for me and I'm getting the average 1-2 lbs weight loss a week. I hope that it will be "easier" (?) or a higher average of loss once I have restriction (going for the 3rd fill next week...so hopefully the 3rd time is the charm). Yes, it is hard to juggle....but you just have to make the time...for YOU...ya know? Generally speaking, women make the time for "others" (ie. spouses, children, relatives, work etc) but not themselves...time to change that habit!

It varies day to day.... but i usually try to keep myself busy so i dont hink about food at all...

But being a female and having that lovely little friend visit every month dont help either.. thats when its the worst for me. I usually can shut them up by saying i want to look good by...... (my Vegas trip in aug of 08) But it is so much harder when you crave chocolate & potato chips...

Just take it on day at a time... Remember baby steps

(but it has gotten a lot better since march)
Or you can try to have a little snack that has Protein and gets you full so you no longer have that desire...

Almonds work very well for me i can only have 4-6 of them and im done -

Need Protein drink ideas
enjoyinglife replied to Lossingitxo's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Check out Isopure. It tastes like Gatorade, comes in a bunch of flavors, and has 40grams of whey Protein in a 20oz bottle. I buy mine from GNC. I also started drinking Protein shakes from Jay Robb. (his name and picture are on the package) (GNC) It tastes so smooth you forget you are drinking a Protein shake. -
How many grams of PROTEIN?
rubyspring replied to Sweet Pee's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My doctor says to try for 70 grams of protein and 30 grams of carbs but ismuch more concerned about just getting in at least 48 oz of fluids for the first few weeks. -
At walmart I found this stuff in the frozen fish section called U-Stuff-It. It's made with real crabmeat, shrimp and Lobster ( some imitations stuff too) and it tastes great. It goes down really well and has 11 grams of Protein in a 3 oz serving. The calories are 160 for a 3 oz serving but I am always full after that much so 160 is great for me. Super easy to prepare and the best part is the price is only $3.89 for five 3 oz servings. I've been worried about getting my protein and I don't like fishy fish but this stuff is really good. Just had to share!

@@itstimealready - thinking you meant 196 - and great job! I was 227 on the day of my surgery - am 212 today - 5 1/2 weeks later. I lost 7 lbs in the first week in addition to the Water weight from the surgery. I stalled after the 1st week for 4 weeks and have been averaging about 3/4 lb a day since the stall broke. The stalls can get discouraging - but I just stick with the process. I had fluids the first 2 weeks - the Protein shake I could drink before the surgery my stomach didn't like afterwards so really had to work hard to get the protein in. After 2 weeks I could eat pureed foods which made it a bit easier. At four weeks I was allowed to move to soft foods and that is where I am at now for a few more days. With soft foods I am able to get most of my protein in with food and only sometimes need to drink some shake - or a drink a shake on days I just don't feel like eating anything. I know what you mean by people telling you that you can lose the weight on your own 'ugh' - I had that, too. But from all my dieting through the years my metabolism had slowed down and I ended up with a lot of co-morbidities which are slowing resolving themselves. As long as I get in all my protein and fluids I feel great - and sometimes that is the hardest work I do all day!! But it is all worth it. Good luck on your surgery! This is a great website and the folks on here have great experience and wisdom.

I don't do protein drinks, but when I was on my post-op liquid diet, I had 3 CIB drinks a day. Each is 20 grams of protein and 230 calories. What I did was: 1 packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast (get the blue box -- no-sugar added) 1 cup skim milk 1/3 cup powdered milk. Mix it all up and drink! I would have 1/2 of one every 2-3 hours during the day, for a total of 60 grams of protein, 690 calories. Since we can have more calories than that, I also had soups, koolaid (sugar free), whatever.

Thank you all for all the concern...I've been good I went home and told my sister I was going to eat, but she gave me this look...and reminded me, it was only an hour or so until bed...So I made a Protein shake ...then took a shower. The next day was so much better! ONLY 6 MORE DAYS TO GO

Need some help with this liquid diet
coyotegirl replied to aileena's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I use UNJURY protein powder. There web site is unjury.com It has a really good taste and comes in chocolate, vanilla and unflavored. They sell samples so you can try before you get the large containers. 20 grams per scoop then the 9 from the milk. They also have lots of receipes for you there. You can give them a try. I love it!! -
I like the pro perfomance 95 from gnc. 25 g soy protein + the amount from the skim milk. Icould eat three a day and not want to kill every human. The taste was good for me- I liked the vanilla, choclate - but there are other flavors cookies and cream and bannana and strawberry. I have mixed in berries or cinamon or 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee or a bannana to vary the flavor and get me some more carbs (I was nursing at the time) or a punch! I occasionally still use one when I am to tight (for what ever reason about 1/3 the time in the morning) or when I am making shakes for dh and the kids with ice cream. I am a big believer in soy protein! And occasionally I need it to keep my protein above 75 g (again - I am nursing still)

I have found that if my water intake is down, so am I. I tend to let is slip in cooler weather. If my protein intake is low, I am exhausted. No matter what I eat if it isn't the right stuff it doesn't do anything for me. If I don't try to be active I become a stone. While I really don't exercise, I try to move around the house doing the daily chores. I take an iron pill twice a month, all my system is able to handle. Calcium, multi vitamins, B6, B12 and Biotin daily. I am over 50 and have many "life" issues that can keep me down. The supplements help me to feel better. You really need to eat, simply put the car needs gas (sry) to make it go. If you are tight in the mornings, I am, try a protein drink like Carnation Instant Breakfast or SlimFast with skim milk. Deli meat and cheese take care of my lunch, or a grilled chicken tender and a veggie at lunch. Somethings I have learned recently about how it is supposed to work is because my husband now has diabetes and food intake is his control. I wish this had been explained to me with the lap band. Our bodies just won't drop the weight if the right combinations and portions aren't provided. It is about so much more than calories. Also, sleeping might not be restful enough. To much sleep can be as bad as not enough. Try to put eating right and sleeping on a schedule.
-
If you haven't brought this up with your doctor please schedule an appointment ASAP. How do you sleep at night? Maybe your meds need to be adjusted. Feelingtired all the time can be related to how well you sleep at night. Your meds may be keeping you up at night (my DH takes them too). It could also be related to stress or depression. Are you getting enough protein and drinking enough water? There are SO many things that could be causing you to be tired that a doctor realy needs to rule out first. I think most people on the lapband have energy due to the weight loss-the only thing I can think of is a lack of nutritants. Hope you find your energy !!

Ingredients 1 cup raw organic sprouted almonds - soaked overnight (this step reduces the level of phytates- here is a good tutorial) 4 cups pure filtered Water vanilla bean (optional) dates, honey or stevia (optional) Instructions Soak almonds for at least 12 hours in pure water with ½ tsp sea salt. This is an important step as it breaks down the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors and cultures beneficial enzymes in the almonds. (side note: soaking nuts should be done before eating them as well. Soak nuts in salt water for 12 hours, rinse them, and dry in oven on lowest heat. See tutorial above.) Rinse almonds well. Mix almonds with pure water in blender or Vitamix. Blend several minutes until smooth and creamy. (Warning: mixture will expand some, so make sure your blender is not full before starting it) Strain mixture into a large bowl through a sprout bag, cheese cloth or kitchen towel. Put mixture back into blender with vanilla, soaked dates, or other sweetener. Pour into glass jar or pitcher and store in fridge for up to one week. Notes Save the pulp of the almonds, put on cookie sheet and dehydrate in oven on lowest heat until completely dry. Run through blender or food processor to make almond flour, which can be used in recipes in place of flour. http://wellnessmama.com/366/organic-almond-milk-recipe/

I am two days pre op diet and I've only had 16 carbs. But I'm wondering if eating a lot of chicken is ok? Cuz I can go thru out the day with my protein shakes (2) but when I get home I'm soooo hungry I just ate a bunch of rotisserie chicken. Is that ok? I had some spinach too

Kaiser Los Angeles Options Locations - What has been your experience?
Steve Puckett replied to thisfathasgot2go's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Did my Options program with Kaiser in Downey with some additional classes at South Bay. Both of those programs are excellent if they are being considered at all. I'm curious that you mentioned Duodenal Switch. That is a severe procedure reserved for near life threatening UBER OBESITY or reconstructive salvage for VERY BAD patients who completely failed with the sleeve, it is not for the 45 to 60 + BMI patients, further expect massive daily Vitamin supplements and eternal diarrhea. GOOD LUCK -
Is it a long stall or am I finished losing?
Shrinking_Violet replied to Shrinking_Violet's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Update: 2 months later and 11 more pounds gone. Yep- it was a long stall and as of today I'm down 100 pounds total! Upped both protein and exercise, so I can't say what exactly was the key - except just staying focused on the plan. Onwards! -
Can't overstate enough about those fluids and protein! It's the hardest part for me, getting all those fluids in. I'm 8 weeks out, and if I'm a little light on the fluids, I get bound up. If I'm light on protein, weight loss and energy drop off. I am at the point where I can put benefited in my water bottle, but more importantly I have to actually drink ALL the water! ^Benefiber

Congratulations on your approval! I had a similar situation where I had to change surgeons half way through the pre-op program. I love my new surgeon! I am on a 10 day pre-op diet which is high protein low carb. My last surgeon wanted a 4 week liquid diet so they really are all different. Keep us updated along the way!

Week 6 well I made it this far. Some times I feel confused..so much information out there so many opinions. Weight wise I loset -5.1 pounds last week bringing my total to 24 with the 9 pounds I lost 3 days before the operation I am at -33. That is good. I still struggle emotionally I wonder am I normal? What is normal? I know everyone is losing faster then me. I am able to eat more them most. I have no problem eatting two eggs but I try and eat eggbeaters less calories. I limit meal time to 30 minute and find the only way I get kinda enough is to eat supper slow and stop when I am somewhat satisfied can eat the whole serving but choose not to. Foods nothing has really made me sick fish, shrimp, sashimi, yogourt all good. I try to drink one protein drink sometimes two can only put half almond milk one cup and YUCK too think. Fluids some days better then others trying to get my 8 glasses in. Cheats... Yes I am ashamed to say at 6 weeks I have already tried things I should not. I bought some Japanese pretzels supper thin 90 calories 11 carbs. I have been dying for something snacky. At whole foods I bought popcorn that is 35 calories a cup was shocked that I could eat 4 cups! Will stop buying that. Tried a small bite of a real cookie but tasted like crap so spit it out. If it doesnt taste good why bother? Like all things I am in a hurry to get to the next step need to take it step by step that is a challange for me. some days I will be honest I do have buyers remoarse then I remember how unhealthy I was. Anyone who has not done the procedure yet I would reccomend writing down why your are doing this when later you second guess yourself you can read it. I am glad I did it and have to stay positive although you can see even in this area I am back and forth. Dont know about anyone else but I feel very alone going through this. Every day I need to think check myself and make sure I am comitted. I still worry will it work? How come I can eat more then others? Why in the hell woud I cheat so early into it? I have learned to take it one day at a time. I am not perfect but I am learning and trying I dont want to fail at this ~

Help! First Day Of 2 Week Liquid Diet
legnarevocrednu replied to jamesmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first few days ARE difficult! If you continue to be sick by day 4, consider changing your protein drink (if you are allowed). I WASN'T allowed, but did anyway. Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast was my life saver. I still lost 14 pounds by the end of the 10 days. I would give it a few more days (sorry you have to suffer) and see how it goes. Good luck!
