    Pain reliever

I've had no problems with alleve. Of course, I only took it when needed during that first week. My mom, who has MS, and was sleeved last week took it and had no problems. It really helped. Sleeve patients can continue use of NSAIDs AFTER surgery... Bypass patients can't. All NSAIDs cause problems with the stomach over time, which is why alleve is better than ibuprofen( same dosage, longer effectiveness). I suppose it differs from patient to patient, especially if you have acid reflux. I have a high threshold for pain, and stopped taking the pain medicine on day two. The gas pain was horrible and alleve... once a day for 3 days following helped tremendously. I also had acid reflux and Zantac helped for that. If your doctor told you no NSAIDs then I would follow their instructions. My doctor told me it was fine, told my mother it was fine and we both were glad we were able to! My gas pain was definitely lessened when we did. It's best to check with your doctor. Good luck, I hope you feel better.

    Lapband to By-Pass

That sounds awesome. I can't wait for it to be gone because it is so embarrassing when I eat lunch atty my desk and my supervisor comes to ask me a question about work. He had commentedon the gurgling noises several times. I'm so tired of it and hoping it goes away with the bypass.
  3. So good to hear from you and glad u are doing well and out of pain !!! Head hunger sucks !!! Is it extremely easy to get full with bypass opposed to sleeve ??? Im sure it is but I wonder how different the restriction feels.. Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App

New Here, New to the Idea

Welcome!! I was banded back on April 5, 2011. So far I am down 50lbs. And I have to say this was the best decision I have ever made in my life. I have no regrets, so far. I chose the band verses any other bariatric surgery because it is one with the least complications and it is removable! Plus you lose the weight at a more healthy pace than lets say gastric bypass. I also have 3 children and they are my world. My mother died at 48 from complications from obesity. When I hit 30 I realized I was very close to ending up like my mother. I was pre diabetic and hypertensive. I refuse to die at a young age. I did not want to leave my family that young. My mothers death tore apart our family. I am now at a healthy blood sugar level and have good blood pressure again. I am now 31 and have a better prospect for my life than I did a year ago. I still have about 120lbs to go before I hit my goal weight but I have no doubt I will make it. Good luck on your research! This is a fantastic forum to get any info you need. I have been addicted since I first found it. Great support system here! Karrie
  5. I just wanted to look and feel pretty. My health was so declining that I needed to have WLS as revision to the gastric bypass I had 10 yrs ago. Preop was not a bad plan for me--I now am challenged by eating the solid foods. I am glad you are getting sleeved soon and wish you well. Ronda
  6. Tomorrow can not get here soon enough. Im nervous, excited and scared. I'm nervous that I'm making a mistake (first surgery went well...perhaps I won't be as lucky) - excited because I have hope that I will lose weight and get rid of the acid reflux, and scared that nothing will change or get worse. I'm embarrassed I have to be here again. :/ My husband is supportive but doesn't really understand...food needs to be my enemy and just for fuel...it's hard to eat right when all he wants is meat and potatoes and I have to make it. Anyways, searching for folks that have been successful in a sleeve to bypass situation..looking for all the advice I can get.
  7. RNY revision to duodenal switch. I'm a little nervous. I've started this journey in March so I'm ready. I hope to post updates as time goes on. I know God is with me and i feel very positive that this time i will make it to goal weight and keep it off. When i had my original bypass almost 15 yrs. ago, i didn't have as much guidance or knowledge that i do now. Much has changed over the years and I'm so ready. Is anyone else having your revision tomorrow or very soon. I'm here for anyone who wants to chat or vent or contemplating getting a revision done. My best to all of you. God Bless!

    For struggling new bandsters

La Madam - Thanks for your gentle reminder to all of us here that patience is the key to our sanity and weight loss. I do not weigh myself everyday, but during the 6 weeks post op, I was discouraged at not having lost any weight. My doctor was one of those who talks down to you if you don't lose enough weight during the liquid phase. He always compares you (his patient) with his other patients, which is wrong!! Especially since most of his patients are gastric bypass and of course they are going to lose more. Even though my doctor isn't well informed, I'm glad that I have this place to turn to and get the help and advice that I need. Being well informed about the band process and the living it are two different things. I thought I knew what to expect, but what I didn't expect was the emotional ride. Thanks again for the reminder. Am I crazy to do this???

Hi Alisabeth, based on your height and weight your BMI is a little over 36, which is where mine was when I had surgery. I can completely relate to your desire to have the surgery and be healthy! I was 43 when I was banded, I wish I could have done it when I was younger. You say your were denied by insurance, does your insurance cover weight loss surgery? If so, what are their requirements? Many companies deny a first request and you have to appeal. I did, and I won. So the fact that you were denied the first time doesn't always mean they won't cover you. Each company has specific requirments, but generally for a BMI between 35 and 39 you need to have a co-morbid condition such as high-blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, joint problems, and the like. Your doctors can determine if you have any. Check out obesitylaw.com they can help with appeals and their services are free. As to the above.... none of the WLS procedures give 100% of weight loss; patients have to do their share of the work. See this link for more info: Weight Loss Surgery Comparison | WLS Basics | Weight Loss Surgery It has a chart of various procedures and pros/cons of each along with percentage of expected weight loss at five years. Band has the lowest percentage of excess weight lost, but to me it has the lowest change of our natural anatomy. If you do your share, you can lose 100% of excess weight, I did, as did many who post here. Productive Burping is not vomiting. It is as the name suggests BURPing. Like a baby spits up milk, sometimes a band patient burps and a bit of stuff comes up. There is no retching involved. Burping doesn't hurt. Food can become stuck with a band, as it can with bypass. You can reduce the risk by taking small bites and chewing well. Having food stuck does hurt. A stuck episode will usually resolve in short order. While you cannot eat more food while the episode is going on, once resolved, you will be able to consume food again. Erosions can occur, I was warned of the possibility. It is a risk we accept when we choose to be banded. Other procedures have risks as well. With malabsorptive procedures you can become malnourised. With bypass it can leak. With sleeve you can get a stricture. Keep researching and asking questions!!

    Need a buddy!

Good morning from Anchorage Alaska! Congratulations on your surgery! You are on a life long journey for a healthier you. Bypass is a tool that I believe God has given us to use. What a blessing! I had Gastric Bypass 16 months ago on the 16th of this month. I have lost more weight than my surgeon told that I would and have had to revise my weight loss goal! He told me I would loose 75 pounds, I have lost 100 pounds and feel great! Well, with following orders and exercising, Protein and Water I have exceeded his prediction. When I went for my last doctor visit my blood work showed that my body was absorbing nutrients very well, so well that my doctor asked what kind of Vitamins I was taking and I told him the bariatric vitamins and some of my own that I had previously taken. He asked me not to take vitamins everyday for the next 6 months but only once per week. I was 61 when I had my bypass and am now 62 and glad that I did it. My family was afraid for me at first. But I did my research before the surgery and was able to put their mind at ease. I exercise and get in at least 60 grams of protein each day with sips of water every 10 to 15 minutes. I have had no physical or medical complications from the surgery. I now realize how much time and energy I have spent in the past relating to food. I no longer do that! That's freedom! I have cravings sometimes but I look at where I was and compare it to where I am and decide if I am really hungry or if I'm experiencing head hunger. Usually real hunger is for natural foods not carbs or sugary foods. When you follow the protocols for this surgery it works and you develop new habits that can carry you through the rest of your life. Scripture and Prayer has helped me. Scriptures like Galatians 5:1 and Philippians 4:13. I plan to live this way for the rest of my life. How about you? Again Congratulations to you. Love to hear from you! Vickiebc

    Oatmeal Got Stuck :(

thanks for the info i am about a month away from bypass so any people can share is good
  13. I had my gastric bypass Dec. 10th. I have been doing fine I have been getting 60oz of fluids down and 30mg of protein every day, Well today I started worrying that I am doing something wrong. My weight loss has been slow 12.5 pounds since surgery. How much protein was everybody else doing 10 days out. Its hard to get down 3 oz at a setting. I don't want to mess myself up.
  14. Hi all - I am two weeks out from surgery. I felt great after surgery for a couple of days until I developed a hernia from pushing my 70 pound lab off my lap! Regardless, I have absolutely no sense of fullness. Not even any of the "subtle" ones. I have experimented with some mushy foods (chicken, carrots) and those didn't make me feel full despite eating half a cup of them. Also nothing I've eaten makes me sick - although I haven't had too wide a variety. I am super scared I will have to rely solely on my "willpower" to continue losing weight after the first few weeks. I have lost all the Fluid weight I gained in both surgeries (bypass and hernia) and 10 more. If I don't have any full sensation and no dumping syndrome, I'm not sure this will end up working very well for me. Has anyone else had this? Did it resolve? I am very worried about this! 15. So I just got back from a small family reunion for my Grandmothers 90th birthday. When I said large family in the title I wasn't referring to the number of people there but the size of the people there. I found out that a couple of them had had either bypass, sleeve, or the band in the past. The problem was they were all telling me how it failed and they just gained all their weight back. This was pretty eye opening for me to say the least. I know surgery is a just a tool in the weight loss tool belt and can be defeated. All the ones I talked to had one thing in common...they never went to a support group or held themselves accountable to stick to eating right post surgery. They mentioned how easy it was to fall back into the old eating habits and some were even pressured by their spouse to cheat on their diets. Now I am scared that this will end up being my fate...I will just have to make sure I attend the support group meetings religiously.

    Protein powders

Bypass was a cake walk compared to the sleeve. The previous Dr had to have done something wrong. I went in at 12:30 Tuesday, stayed 2 nites and I was home on Thursday. I'm not having any dumping problems, once in a while if I eat too fast. Thank God for Zophran. Otherwise I feel fantastic. During the first six months of nut meetings my SW: 179 SWT:168 CW: 149 When I got the sleeve I was at 238 and Surgery weight 209 I was down to 142 at my lowest, not sure if I'm going to have problems down the line but so far so good. Thank you for your kind thoughts Sent from my SM-J337P using BariatricPal mobile app

I had the bypass on Nov 12 and it took awhile to get back to eating anything. I'm happy to let you know that since day one I haven't had to worry about reflux at all. Some people might not believe me but I am so relieved to not have any acid in my throat anymore. Haven't had to take Omeprazole for over a month now. It's a whole new life. I did have acid reflux before the sleeve for about 3 years, but it got worse after the sleeve. Sent from my SM-J337P using BariatricPal mobile app

    Any PCOS sleevers?

I was sleeved September 24, 2014. Was diagnosed with PCOS November 2013 and had a Mirena IUD inserted after my wacky period just stopped and left me with only spotting. Anyways, my highest known weight was 374, on my surgery date I weighed 327. I am now 202. I was wearing a size 28W or 5X, am now wearing size 14 or L/XL. My period started started about one week post-op. It wasn't regular after that...I still spotted, but it did start again. Recently though it's been in overdrive! I had 3 "periods" in July-August...still spot...crazy PMS abd water retention. But I don't mind.

    June 9, 2013.......week 3

I went to my second of two psychologist's visits. Yoohoo!! I got clearance from him!! And this time, he didn't bother asking me any crazy questions like "Have you ever been small?" I saw my coordinator at the grocery store....she had a bypass and lost over a hundred pounds a few years ago.... she reassured me that she feels 99.9999999% sure that I'll be approved. When she gets my "Letter of Medical Necessity" and psych clearance, as well as nutritionist's clearance - she'll send it on up to BC/BS. Another woman that I work with (same insurance) just got approved....and I believe my BMI, sadly enough, is much higher than hers. So, it's really going to happen..........I'm going to do this - despite the naysayers who are telling me I'm mutilating my body, I shouldn't mess with what God gave me, etc. How do you respond to these people? Anyways - until the next update.... So, here's the weekly progress: June 9, 2013 8 weeks post op - Highest weight: 320.2 Current weight: 315.2 Goal weight: 172 Height: 5'10" My weekly diet modifications: Go entirely to decaf coffee. My weekly behavioral modifications: One night this week - no snacking or grazing after dinner.

    feeling hopeless

This year is my 10 year anniversary from when I had my RNY. I originally lost 155 lbs and had not felt better in my life! I was addicted to running and working out...which isnt a bad addiction! 18 months after my RNY, I had my Gallbladder removed. 5 years into my weight loss I slipped my SI joint and there began a serious of complications with my lower back! I started a serious of steriod injections in 2009, and began to gain weight. Not too much weight, becuase I was still working out despite doctors orders. Then in 2012, I lost feeling in my left leg and had to have emergency back surgery. I ended up with drop foot and a discectomy in my L4, L5 and S1 joints. After that I felt pretty ok, except i had to learn how to walk normally again. A few months after my back surgery, I ended up in the ER with pain in my stomach and violently throwing up. Again, I had emergency surgery....a obstruction in my intestions. When they went in there, they found my intestines were twisted. I woke up 5 hours after surgery to find out that they couldnt do the surgery laprosopically, and they cut me right open and it was more serious than they thought. So after recovering from that, and all the steriods I have been on over the past few years, I had now gained 50-60 lbs back. Last summer I had to return to a pain specialist for my back, and they discovered they my back pain is now coming from the scar tissue from my back surgery. So here we go again....more steriod injections. Over the past few months, I have learned that I have developed sleep apnea, and now high blood pressure! These 2 things I have NEVER had before in my life! As of today, I have gained 90 lbs of my weight back! Im so overwhelmed. I still cant work out like i used to, because of my drop foot, and I am limited in my activities. I have started drinking diet sodas again...although i still drink my required Water throughout the day. But I just cant seem to break this cycle, and stop the downward spiral! I feel so hopeless, my spirit is broken, I feel lost and afraid! This is affecting my health, my marriage and my quality of life! I see my gastric bypass doctor for my monthly B12 shots, and all they tell me is, keep track of your eating and cut back. YES YES...I KNOW!!!! Easier said than done....especially when you are not depressed! Ive tried the 5 day pouch test, and my doctor has done a upper GI to see if my pouch has stretched and it hasnt. I would love feedback! I just dont know what to do anymore!
  21. Hi! My name is Kayla and I am 30, 5'0 and cw is 220 my surgery is scheduled for 9/7 in San Antonio, TX. For gastric bypass. They recommended that for me because of my acid reflux. I am also a cash customer because I don't have insurance at the moment (I will once I'm married). It cost me less to do cash then it is to pay for insurance and then all the fees. I have a few appointments coming up in August, seems like all at once! Lol Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. It can seem VERY overwhelming when you are starting out. So much info, so many changes, it's crazy. That is one reason I was so glad that I had to do a 6 month diet supervised by my doc. It really gave me time to wrap my head around how my life was going to change. I needed that time to understand how and why I was eating the way I was. some of it was pure lazinesss, some was emotional and some was just because I liked it. I didn't lose much weight during that 6 months but I didn't gain any either. So when my surgery date came I knew I was ready, especially when they moved my surgery from November 3rd to October 27th. Yikes!! I am a planner and that thur me off a little. lol The first few months I know for me I wasn't sure if I was doing things right, if I could have been doing more, but I trudged on thru and now I know I was doing everything right. I now have a NEW normal for me. I don't feel weird or different when I am out, I'm just me living my life the way I always should have. I am also very lucky because my husband and daughter are great about meals and try to help plan around what I can eat. And when I make them something that isn't the best for me I always have either tunafish or chicken on hand for me. As you go thru it day by day it will be easier, it does take planning and being prepared but it just makes it easier for you. I just got back from a 6 day trip to Disneyland and I had a blast, I ate at the parks, I brought my Protein powder and Quest bars with me and you know what when I got home I got on the scale the next day I had lost two pounds. Life after gastric sleeve surgery is DOABLE!! It might not be always easy but it is doable. Sorry this is so long I could go on and on, but remember why you are doing this. Good Luck with your journey!!

    Second surgery!?!?

I developed Gerd after i was sleeved and my surgeon advised that if my symptoms got worse that there is no other option but to go ahead with a bypass. Luckily medication is working for me so far but i do have to sleep with a tonne of pillows to keep me upright. I have since had only one nasty incident which viciously woke me up at 2am and kept me up for the rest of the night/morning. I really hope you get some relief with the acid as your case sounds to be an extreme case. Wish you all the best with your weight loss journey. Please keep us posted on your status with this, as i for one am very interested as this may be a decision i may have to make one day in the future. Xox
  24. Hey Wedah!...Welcome aboard!!....Looks like we're just not even 2 weeks apart in our banding times!!....I am getting banded on the 18th of November....I can't wait....feels like it will never get here!!!
  25. I may not understand completely exactly what your dealing with but 5 weeks out was tough for me including soup I was getting about 15-20oz total a day for everything. Food never stayed in me I puked all food up pretty much so I just went back to soups and even then I started puking that up too. In fluid today I do like 25-30oz a day now this includes ice poles I am 3 and half months out and eat total in the whole day about 5oz of food if I am lucky. It got to the point I did get mad and kicked off at them that’s when they told me to go back a couple of stages and cut down how much I tried to eat the standard 40z thing half a cup was too much for me, its still too much for me now I only eat 1oz portions and drinking 4 or 5 mouthfuls and I have to wait about 20mins mins or up it comes again. They were gonna check me for scare tissue but when I cut back on portion size and stopped trying to drink so much I puke way less not completely never again half a teaspoon more than I should and blugh up it all comes but its easier not trying to be the standard this is what you do at this stage cookie cutter info and tailor it to my own personal needs. I do what I can manage if I can’t increase my intake in 3 months to 4oz at a sitting they will check for scare tissue. I just personally don’t see how moving your intestines will fix the issues with your stomach they can’t reopen your stomach put it back then do the bypass you don’t have the rest of your stomach to do that with. Going bypass to sleeve is easy because you keep the rest of your stomach in bypass its just closed off so they can convert. I’m not a medical doctor just going by what I know of the 2 ops and my own personal experience of having a hard time drinking and eating, so I am wondering how this is meant to help you eat and drink when all it will do is make you absorb even less of what you can barely take in right now. Like are they thinking if they do the intestine move you will loose more weight so that’s the end result they are happy with? Or do they honestly think it will make you eat and drink more?
