  1. I settled in at around 1100 within the first month, which was comfortable and worked well with my guy metabolism - I had been stable before surgery at 2500+ so I had confidence about having a decent caloric deficit for continued weight loss and maintained that level throughout my loss phase. YMMV. I am somewhat suspicious of programs that ramp up calories on a schedule over time, as our natural inclination is for weight loss to decline over time as we get lighter - we naturally burn fewer calories as we have less weight we are moving around 24/7. I recognize that there are multiple hypotheses about metabolisms and weight loss, but there also seems to be little strong consensus on it, either. I have seen good overall good results from many on these forums over the years doing programs in the 6-800 calorie range, and there are many who seem to stall or go into maintenance early on 1200+ calorie programs. Yet we also see some success at higher levels, or reports of that breaking stalls. Take these under consideration while trying to understand how your body is working, but my inclination would be to keep things on the lower side. At my six month follow up with our RN program director, she was wanting me to cut back my exercise as she felt I was losing too fast (which I wasn't going to do as I was basically working at my semi-normal activity levels,) but by the end of that month (it was November,) I was within ten pounds of my goal weight, and losing a consistent ten pounds per month, so I started ramping up my calories to slow things down (I basically let the holidays happen...) which stretched those last ten over two months instead. I never controlled carbohydrates, net or otherwise, or fats, but sought to get the best overall nutrition from the non-protein side of my diet, but in those later months carbs typically ran in the 100-120 range; I had selectively increased my complex carb intake at around four months for energy management purposes (I was running out of gas in the pool after an hour) which did the trick without any effect on loss rate.

    Weight loss and gain

Will do, I appreciate it. It might be because I had gallbladder surgery at the same time with many complications and was in the hospital for 2 ½ weeks. Maybe it stalled things with my gastric bypass 🤷🏼. Thank you for the heads up
  3. hello there, i had gastric bybass 8 years ago. Now i am struggling on feeling full. I am hungry all the time. I have gained 40 lbs and i have terrible heartburn. I want a revision. Has anyone gotten approved for a REVISION bybass?? that can help .....what is it that i have to do to get a REVISION. I don't want to regain all my weight back

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

My starting BMI was 47. I had the gastric sleeve done almost two years ago. I lost 100% of my excess weight and I'm now down to 125. I'm in maintenance at this point but I still eat fairly low carb and I avoid sugar and junk food. It's not impossible to lose all your excess weight with the sleeve but on average, people who have the bypass lose a bit more. For that reason, I REALLY wanted the bypass but it was medically contraindicated for me and the sleeve was my only option. I was disappointed at the time but it all worked out well.

    Revision completed

Hi Tracy, sorry to hear about the Gerd. Bypass is supposed to fix that so I’m concerned for you. my Gerd is gone completely but I still get nauseous after I eat food...it’s better than it was a few months ago but still there. My weight loss is very slow. I’m 203 and started at 264 (bypass July 18 2020. One would think that after 3 months in and out of hospital (not bypass related), I would have lost much more, but it’s ok, I’m in no rush. I hope you’ll see your doctor regarding f the Gerd. The meds are not good for your pouch long term. Xo

    Revision completed

Hey, @Tracyringo I was sleeved on 9/11/18. Lost about 120 pounds then got pregnant and started suffering from serve reflux and lost restriction. I am scheduled for a revision to bypass on 3/29/21. I would love to talk to you about your experience with revision. I am now about 70 pounds heavier than my lowest weight and am dead set to make this a success. Any tips or words of wisdom?

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

Ok. So would you mind sharing how the food tolerance and hunger/cravings were at first and now? The thing is I don't see enough people who keep the weight off with the sleeve like they do with the bypass, and when I do see people 5+ year later even on YouTube, they all gained it back. It's like it was pointless even removing the hormones ghrelin if most people still can't control their cravings and regain the weight...both surgeries reduce the size of your stomach, but the sleeve appealed to me because they remove ghrelin with it....but its like it's only temporary. For a person like me who is constantly hungry and craving, that worries me that I'll be just as hungry again 1 year post op. And that's why I'd prob regain. Maybe I do need a surgery that'll hold me more accountable if I do cheat...I also am pre-diabetic, my blood sugar is starting to climb...tomorrow's finally my consult, and I'll see what the surgeon recommends. Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

313 was my top weight, 307 on my first appt with the Surgeon in Dec 2019 and I was 293 on my surgery day Aug 24th, I'm only 5 ft 3 5" had a Bmi of like 53 and a waist of 59 inches, My waist now (20 weeks later is 41 inches). I chose the R&Y because I wanted the most restrictions and requirements possible, the extra accountability that comes with the stricter reginine of supplements for life, low fat and no sugar. Dumping syndrome is AWFUL!! its nausea, the cold sweats, upset stomach etc like a sudden flu that happens in minutes. It happens if u have too much sugar, Fat or just too much food in your stomach, especially with fluid and then it goes through faster than it should. The 30/30 rule is for real! I also felt in all my research and my surgeon agreed that my GERD (acid Reflux) and my EOE Eociniphilic Esophogitus (Spontaneous regurgitating) would both be better with the R&Y. Gerd can get worse with the sleeve. They were right and my Gerd is gone and I no longer need meds for it either. I'm down 68 lbs since surgery and I'm 100% confident I made the right choice for me. I also Didn't want to go through a revision of sleeve to Bypass if it didn't work well enough for me. I have lost and gained 100 lbs multiple times in my life and I never wanna go through it again. I need the stricter food guidelines for my progress, the accountability and responsibility keeps me on track. Not 1 item with real sugar in it since 2 weeks before surgery. Fruit is my only real sugar and I am careful to eat very small portions of low sugar fruits like berries and some green apple. I put pyure sugar sub on things that need it but thats rare as things do taste sweeter. You really have to make the decision that's best for your individual wants, needs and preferences. I had a lot of pain post op, I did have my Galbladder out too tho so I have 9 incision scars instead of the 5 most ppl have. It took a few hours for the nurses to get my pain under control and I had some pain for first few weeks at home. Then suddenly it was gone. I also rejected no less that 2 dissolving stitches from 5 of my incisions, this has happened to me before with other surgeries. I would do it all over again tho.

    Time off work

I was a revision sleeve to bypass. For the bypass I took 3 weeks off work (though my job is fairly active - aged care).
  10. At 6 months out since Gastric Bypass, I started my hair loss at the start of December. Currently taking just for hair loss- Collagen, biotin, iron. After talking with my doctor last Tuesday, she told me my iron intake needed to be increased to 50mg up to 100mg per day.and to watch for constipation. We also spoke about meals, currently at about 65-85 grams of protein per day. I add protein to practically every thing I eat. I use Genepro, it can be added to tea and coffee as well as hot and cold foods. It is flavorless and has helped tremendously keeping my protein Intake up. I buy mine on the bariatric pal store. I am due to get some labs this week so I am curious about my vitamin and mineral numbers. Also, I have been discouraged due to the hair loss and the slow down of weight loss. However the doctor told me it is very normal at this stage to slow down losing. That was incredibly reassuring☺️ TLDR;Key takeaways- more protein, more water and check your iron intake. Good luck. ❤️
  11. I had bypass but I think food reintroduction is the same. Im over 2 months post op and lighter type foods still are my go to. It’s kind of trial and error at first. But cottage cheese, berries, avocados, tomatoes, diced lettuce, lighter cheese & turkey rolls, soups, yogurts are still my go to foods. Chicken is still difficult, so I will boil it in spices/water to soften it up. I can eat a few whole wheat ritz crackers, but other overly crunchy crackers don’t sit great. Peanut butter/almond butter must be in small doses with apple slices or celery.. that’s what works for me. Good luck on the next phase!

By the way, my family adopted a mostly black kitten in November. My son named him Kevin and he is such a rascal that we affectionally call him Evil Kevin. 😄

    Newbie & 1st stall

Hello, I had bypass 12/17 and hadn’t lost weight since 1/1/2021. Today I finally went down a pound and am *hoping* this “stall” is over... 25 days is a long time, made me feel like a failure, but I’ll remain hopeful. I say “stall” because I know through photos and measurements that I was losing inches. good luck, I hope your stall ends quickly!

    3 months post op bag

We had no specified limits or goals on macros other than protein. If you think about it, this makes sense as if you get in your requisite protein, and your calories are low enough to facilitate the desired weight loss, then it really doesn't matter what your fat or carb macros are (leave that for the fad dieters) as both will be quite low. As an example, if you are following the common 6-800 calorie post op diet (or even 1000,) with 60-80 g protein and totally ignore the other macros, you may be around 50-60g of carbs; does that make any functional difference to the magical 40g (or 30, or20) promoted by some of the popular fad diets? No. Against a typical Western/American diet that is often 300+ g of carbohydrates there numbers may make some sense (primarily that it represents a lot of calories...) but typically for us post op, it doesn't make any difference. Concentrate on learning to eat a healthy, sustainable diet that includes your typical fruits, veg, leaner meats, nuts, whole grains instead of the processed white flour junk, and in general bypass the junk foods (high calorie, low nutrition) and you will be miles ahead of those who agonize over macro counts and ratios (and most likely, a fair bit lighter in the long run. Good luck...
  15. Hi! I am new to this forum. I got my lapband in 2013. My starting weight was 280lbs and I am about 5'3". In the first year I lost 95 pounds and was down to 185lbs. I never had a fill as my doctor never recommended one. In the last 4 years I have shot back up to 225lb as menopause had set in and I started to lag going to the doctor which was no help. I am now 56 years old and can't seem to budge even a couple of pounds off. I have moved out of the state where I had the procedure years ago and had a consult with the local general/bariatric surgeon about 10 months ago. He agreed to remove the lapband and do a revision to bypass. I met remotely with the bariatric nurse and participated in the orientation zoom meeting. I went for my first weigh in as I was told I would have to start from scratch and in the program and work with a doctor or dietitian for 6 months before they would get approval for the surgery which Iwas more than willing to do. I was turned off by the nurses attitude as she never answered my calls to guide me in the right direction to get started so I gave up on the idea. I feel stuck, depressed and frustrated and I don't know where to turn. My insurance has changed and I can't seem to find a doctor to help me. Thanks for listening. When you say you are hungry all the time, do you mean that you don't have restriction? If you eat a protein rich like, say, a chicken breast or a small steak - does that still leave you hungry? Or do you mean you feel head hunger all the time? If you actually feel physically hungry even after eating enough to fill your pouch, then that may be an issue around the restriction. But if it's head hunger, I can certainly relate. The drivers for my eating are rarely actual hunger and often boredom, stress etc. The problem is that this messes up our bodies' ability to recognise the difference between actual hunger and head hunger. I don't know a huge amount about the bypass surgery or any revision surgery, but I think they're unlikely to address the more fundamental issues you might have with food and how you eat.

    Time off work

I can't say about a revision. However, as a first-time Bypasser I originally took two weeks off (from a desk job). I went back on Monday of the third week and was so exhausted I left at noon and took another week off.

Hi everyone hope everyone is doing well as they can in the current pandemic situation. I have been absent for a while, due to personal circumstances, I’m currently facing another difficult situation, and I would really appreciate some advice I had a sleeve in January 2018, (abroad paid privately so have had no support or any help post surgery on return to the UK) initially I lost about 20 kg slowly over the year (from 95kg to 76kg) my weight loss stopped after the first year or so, however 3 years later im now 83 kg hungry all the time and feeling incredibly stressed and emotional and really worried where this is going, I have spoke to a few surgeons abroad, my options are a gastric bypass but im so worried that is this the right decision for me, my sleeve didn’t get me to my target of 55kg from 95kg, I only lost half and slowly regaining I’d really appreciate some advice /help/ experiences of other members Thankyou x

Can I see some before and after pics?

I’m only 2 months out but you can really see a difference in my face! As I progress, I’ll upload a body shot one day. Bypass Nov 17th 2020. 41 lbs down.

    1 year surgeversary

The sleeve was out for me too because of GERD. I went in to my appointment knowing I wanted RNY. My doctor actually suggested the DS but I told him I wasn’t ready to go that drastic. I’m glad I stuck with bypass. I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be able to get to the size I am now. I’m pretty sure after I get my thighs done I’ll probably be able to wear a size 0P! I love the size I am now!

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

    I was November 9, 2020.
  25. I am doing the bypass for my Hiatal Hernia which caused GERD and Esophageal Spasms. Due to my weight the standard procedure is not an option. As my insurance coverage does not cover "weight loss surgery or medications" it was a 10 month multi appeal process to get my surgery approved. I do hope your post surgery is going well! Mine is scheduled for March 10th.
