  1. Hello everyone! I'm here and surviving but trying to deal with those dang fast food commercials. My family has planned a beach vacation and I'll be hopefuly starting soft foods by then but I don't want to say until I know more at my weekly follow up visit on Wednesday. I'm trying to drink water and diluted fruit juice to keep mt bloodsugar upm but i'm sick of diluted juices. I have no patience on this whatsoever and I know I need it. I just keep going to get to my sister's point. She's a year out so I have a long way to go to get to her level.
  2. I can only speak for myself. That being said I’m in the US and I had to go on a “diet” before my surgery to yes decrease the size of liver. I had to stop stepping on the scale as it will drive you batty. Focus on your meal plan. 3 weeks is short period of time and it’s not expected to drop off that fast. Weight loss is only one goal. Water is one of your goals, and meeting your calorie and protein numbers is another. Your comments are kind of unusual for someone 3 weeks out tho. Usually it’s about other things, nausea, not feeling hungry…etc. if you’re skipping eating that will effect your weight loss. If you follow your meal plan to the letter you will see the difference. You didn’t really mention what stage of your meal plan you are on now (liquids, soft, purée). Best of luck.
  3. yep, i find that the burger patties i make at home are much more calories than the ones i get at fast food restaurants! well, at least based on said restaurant's posted nutritional info. Granted, my burger patties are probably 4-5 times the size of fast food places. also the restaurants could be lying!!!

    Discouraged after Surgery

    you've lost more than I did at that point, and I started out much heavier than you. there are many factors that determine your rate of weight loss, most of which you have little to no control over - age, gender, starting BMI, genetics, metabolic rate, how muscular you are, if and how much weight you lost prior to surgery, etc. The only two things you have a lot of control over are how closely you stick to your plan and how active you are. If you do well with those, you WILL lose the weight, whether fast or slow. I was a slow loser throughout my entire journey, and I ended up losing 100% of my excess weight, over 200 lbs. honestly, except for people the size of those on "My 600 lb Life", most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month after surgery. Since you've lost 20 lbs in six weeks, you were likely in that range at the end of month #1. You'll always find some who lose above or below that range, but they're outliers. Your amount of loss is completely normal (and also, men tend to lose faster than women - hence, your husband...)

    Puking my guts out today :(

    I had it too the other day with some scrambled egg. Again, not sure if I ate too much, too fast, or what. But it SUCKED. Wanna know what was even worse? I was at Target when it happened. Hubs was getting his hair cut and I was going to wait there, and felt yuck, so went to Target in the same shopping center. Thought it was all out and I was good. Nope. Walking around store and it just foams up in my mouth, so I ran to the kleenex aisle and got some and opened them up and used them to spit that nasty mess in. This happened 4-5 more times a tiny bit at a time while walking around, until hubs was done, and I took a little sip of water. So yeah, def going to not eat scrambled for a while.

    July 2023 buddies

    Hi @LibrarianErin I work for an American company and have some US based family and friends so I am well aware of the 4th July. I told my boos (American) that I was having my own freedom day on the 4th I had my pre-op consultation yesterday at the hospital with the anesthetist and floor nurse. Lots of questions for me, an EGC and blood test. I asked if there was anything to do in advance food and drink wise and they said no, just fasting from the night before when I arrive to the hospital. When I said I had given up alcohol three weeks ago they said that was a "good idea" and when I then said that as of the start of this week I had switched to decaf they asked me why I would do that, there was no need!! I explained I had read online a lot where it said not to have caffeine before or after surgery, the nurse laughed and said one of the things they give as a liquid after the op is a coffee. I didn't even tell them that I had started my own version of a liquid diet for the two weeks lead up. Protein shake for breakfast and one for lunch or dinner and then a meal for the other. I am trying to reduce my portion sizes and eat slower but it is really hard. I think that is what I worry about most, being able to slow down and be more mindful. I also love to drink - water, coffee, alcohol etc. - and not sure how I will cope with tiny sips. It is very hot here, in mid to high 80s which is too much for me and I am gulping back the water non-stop. What I didn't like to hear was that I have to shave from under my breasts to top of my things including pubic area. I am not sure I have seen there in years or can easily reach down there The pain of surgery might be one thing but the pain of regrowth elsewhere could be worse for longer, not looking forward to that.

    Puking my guts out today :(

    I had my first episode of foamies today. I’m 3 weeks post op and I am cleared for soft foods. I had a scrambled egg and i think i ate a little too fast. I definitely felt it in my chest. The pressure and my runny nose was the cue that I probably ate too fast or I ate too much. Anyways I vomited the dreaded “foam/slime” and proceeded to vomit some of the eggs. Now I wonder when can I drink water ? I’m currently laying it out and trying to relax myself. Scared the sh*t out of me tho.

    Drinking after bypass

    Here's a weird one. I often heard after getting WLS, that alcohol can be this really slippery slope and transfer addiction is real. It's funny because I was simultaneously worried and not worried at the same time because alcoholism runs in my family and I've seen it ugly, up close and personal which has made me incredibly reflective on my alcohol use, always checking it and monitoring to make sure it wasn't something I was doing out of habit and only in moderation. Basically, I've never been really into alcohol but don't get me wrong, I had my party days in college and I remember being able to drink soooooo much for a long time when I was partying with friends. Fast forward to today, I'm a year and like 5 months post op from bypass and I've found a couple things with alcohol and want to know if anyone is having the same experience: Getting drunk now is horrible, a surefire way straight to my head in the toilet, and not because I'm too drunk but because alcohol makes me incredibly nauseous if I have more than 2 drinks. I also don't drink sugary drinks either - I do usually a hard liquor like vodka and soda water. I find now though that I don't even feel drunk like I used to. I'm incredibly cognizant of everything, don't feel "silly" or "loose" like I used to, then I just get sleepy, and then I just hit a wall and get really nauseous and want to puke. If I have a drink then I eat later, like I've been in a situation where I am going to a dinner, have a cocktail like a couple hours before my meal, then I eat and the food makes me so nauseous and almost dumping. It could be that I'm just older now and drinking is different but I barely drink now since getting my bypass because it just makes me feel like crap. I don't miss it, I think drinking is really bad but I will admit it has taken a toll on my social life (but ultimately it's good to know who wants to actually be friends and who just wants a drinking buddy) But I've always heard that drinking can be a problem after, but now that I have had WLS, drinking is not fun like it used to be and I just don't want to do it at all. Anyone else experiences this? I think it's an interesting topic.

    Stalls suck

    I lost 16 lbs the first *month*, so you're losing it faster than I am, and we started out about the same weight. So many things affect your rate of weight loss, many of which you have no control over. If you stick to your clinic's plan, the weight will come off, whether fast or slow. I was a slow loser from the get-go, and I ended up two years later having lost 235 lbs (which was 100% of my excess weight). I gained about 20 lbs in year 3 (which is very common), but besides that, I've maintained my loss pretty well. Like you, I also lost a bunch of weight before surgery - and that's one of the factors that'll influence who quickly you lose it, at least during the first month or so. Most of the weight people lose the first month is water weight, and since you lost 49 lbs before surgery, that water weight was long gone by the time they rolled you into the operating room (same with me...). So don't worry - the weight WILL come off as long as you stick to your clinic's plan.
  10. I managed to go to a conference all of last week and still have energy to hit the Disney parks in the evenings. I had 20k+ steps every day. I wasn't afraid of not fitting in rides (even the kiddie ones), I didn't feel like people were looking at me and judging me, and I managed to loose a few pounds even with the crappy food provided (kids menu were just fast food and at sit down restaurant massive 4oz of steak, 20 baby potatoes and half a head of broccoli)

    Eating Too Fast

    i did this too. i set the timer on my watch to make me wait between bites. and yes, it took me FOREVER. i was known to sit with my sad, room-temp bowl of food for 1.5 to two hours. it was interesting. after a couple months i was able to do it without the timer. BUT i do still have the rare occasion when i still eat too fast (and im 4.5+ years out). its hard to be mindful 100% of the time. but i do my best.

    It's crazy that 1/4-1/2 cup of food should take about 30 minutes to eat. I too am/was a fast eater. Old habit are hard to break.

    I was going to post the same question about eating too fast. It's hard slowing down ! My husband wolfs his food down . I don't know how many times I've said "Did you even TASTE it ? " I'm a third of the way done and he's finished. I have to constantly remind myself that it's okay if I finish a half hour later than him LOL

    Agreed. I had only taken 3 bites. They were either too large, not chewed well, ate too fast, OR just somehow my new tummy doesn’t like. Either way…never want to feel like that again. Thanks for your reply.

    Eating Too Fast

    You gotta take your time. Five week out (7 weeks for me), we're still learning our new eating habits and what we can tolerate. It's definitely a learning experience. I measure everything - about a quarter cup. I know I can comfortably eat that, so if I do eat too fast, I know I should be okay as far as feeling too full. If I'm still hungry after that, I'll eat a bit more and take my time. Another thing is to CHEW everything as much as you can. I have found that if i dont chew well, I 1. Get full too fast and 2. My stomach is super unhappy. Being over full or stomach upset is miserable after wls. I have learned the stomach is boss. Hopefully, that improves as time goes on.
  16. Well, found out tonight what happens when you eat too fast…don’t do it. Five weeks post op gastric bypass and was wishing I could throw up. The pain was awful and I was eating protein!! I can’t imagine how you would feel eating off plan.

  19. Confession. My team said could drink alcohol after a year. Me being me, i had a couple sips of red wine around 3-4 weeks post op. Was really weird, i swear i could FEEL the wine travelling through my intestines. Then I had a couple sips or a sake-soju concoction around 2 months post. The aftermath still ranks to this day as one of my top 5 dumping episodes. *shudder* I had maybe 5 or so PARTIAL drinks of red wine or gin/vodka tonics throughout my entire weight loss phase. Long story short, I was "affected" really fast. I also sobered up unbelievably quickly. Now in maintenance (im over 4.5 years post op), im NOT proud to admit that i am probably (on paper), a full on alcoholic. i probably drink about 1-2 servings of alcohol a day (espresso martinis or red wine, mostly). I used to drink pre-wls, but nowhere as regularly as i do now. On the flip side, i would reach "embarrassing drunk" pre-wls, but have yet to get there post-wls. Yes, I realize i am justifying, but there u go. As i write this, im wary of newbies reading this, as i really dont want to seem to be endorsing my lifestyle. So sorry everyone! I guess what im ineffectively trying to say is (again) everyone is different, and it is my fervent hope that everyone knows their own personal limits and strives to stay within them. P.S. dont drink too much if u can help it! honestly its not worth the extra stress. I have way too many conversations with myself about this that its ruining my VIBE. P.S.S. i will now remunerate for the next couple hours if this post was a good idea or not. P.S.S. Happy Father's day today to all awesome dads our there!! ❤️

    July 2023 buddies?

    I am changing my June 28 is that close enough to July to be a group member? Right now I am day 4 of the liquid diet and am wondering can I do this… I am looking forward to the soft foods portion a month away… lol and when I can start having mashed things!!! And this is when I already fast all Saturday due to chronic pain… from an accident by a teen texter… it is a long story … but I know after the journey gets me to where I can walk again better And pain is less it will be worth it…

    Lost-gain-lose again?

    I had surgery in 2017 . In the summer of 2022 I gained 10 pounds which I have not been able to lose despite going to the gym and watching what I eat. It concerns me to no end. In 1996 I lost a great amount of weight only to have it creep up on me. By 2000 I gained everything back and then some. I tell everyone to not make excuses for weight creep. Fight it because it will over take you very very fast. It happened to me once and I'm fighting it each and every day. I know the consequences of not fighting it.
  22. I hate to say this, but 1800 calories a day is too much unless you are doing really strenuous exercising. I can maintain my 150 plus pound weight loss at about 1000 to 1200 calories a day, and I currently weight about 160, I am 67 years old and have had no skin removal. My doctors feel that if I did, I would be around 145 to 150. But I need new knees and there is no way I am going to have more elective surgery. But If I eat 1800 calories a day, I gain weight. Fast. Like in a couple days. And yes, there IS more restriction in eating chicken, and fish and other meats. I eat more cheese and dairy than I probably should. But it works for me. I also eat eggs. I make sure at least 2 meals a day have a simple protein like eggs, or chicken or fish, and the occasional beef meal. I happen not to eat shellfish or pork. If I have oatmeal for breakfast, I make sure to have a yogurt for a midmorning snack. I eat few processed carbs and keep my pasta, rice or bread to very very low amounts. Protein, vegetables, fresh fruits. This morning I am having my coffee then, fresh watermelon and scrambled eggs with some shredded cheese. Get back to basics and re check with your doctor or nutritionist about calories. Frankly I rarely if ever count calories; but I know what I am eating and what I can eat to maintain my weight loss.   23. Hello, Is anyone else having excessive slim or spit in their mouths whenever they drink? It's been months since I've had this very sickening feeling in my mouth and stomach whenever I swallow. I'm not eating or drinking too fast. This is driving me crazy!!
  24. I’m diabetic too! I haven’t stopped all diabetes shots but it isn’t as many. I guess my body is adjusting. BS this morning was 159–I had to give an insulin shot. It will work out eventually. Just want you to know It will take time. But I’m hopeful it goes away. That’s why I did it too! Good luck. It will go by fast!
  25. Hello everyone! I have officially received my surgery date for end of September. Im feeling excited, nervous, but most of all happy for a fresh start. I can’t believe how fast time goes by from that first appointment. With my insurance the process takes 6 months and I am already half way through! I found out recently I had gallstones and my surgeon recommended to get my gallbladder removed. The surgery is scheduled for next month for that. I’m a tad nervous about that as well but overall very optimistic. I’m using my time to mentally prepare myself for the change as well as be educated as much as I can about my new to be lifestyle :) Hope you are all doing well! Any September buddies ?!
