  1. November 26th was my 3 month mark. I have lost 43 lbs since surgery. I had lost 38 lbs prior to surgery. My starting weight was 289. My current weight is 208. Yup 81 lbs gone for good.
  2. Absolutley! We have to accept at least a little......no really mroe than a little responsibility for our weight gain and subsequently ourweight loss. Naturally the surgeons would love to sell us more than one WLS. They will just keep getting richer and richer. Studies show the results are about the same at 5 years. I have a friend who had bypass and her daughter then her son then her husband had lapband. The 3 of them are doing great....she gained back about 80 percent of her weight back and consulted the surgeon about banding. He told her there is nothing wrong with her original stomach/surgery, she's just overfeeding it. We all know this could be our scenerio easily as well.
  3. I had my consultation with Dr. Quioco and he only does the bypass. I have been told by several different doctors that I should get the bypass vs. the lapband b/c I need to loose so much weight. Also mentioned that the lapband is temp. and the bypass is permanant and since I've been overweight my entire life that I need something permanant. Anyone been told that? :confused2:
  4. i have an appointment with my dietician and my wife is comming with me to that, i think it'll help her to understand what i am about to go through i get banded on the 14th on November so only days away now. i have been on the liquid diet for 2 weeks and have lost about 8 kilos so far, the penny only recently dropped with me when i realised i can't drink beer post surgery, i'm in australia, without the ability to drink beer......
  5. Hi, I have been banded three days ago. November 12, 08. My doctor was Dr. Macura and Dr. Sherwinter. of Maimonedes Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. I am so happy to be over the surgery. I already lost 9lb, My best advice so far for easier recovery is to force yourself out of bed as soon as possible. I did not suffer from any gas pain most people suffer from. I am still in a lot of pain from the incision, but that is expected.

how should I handle this situation?

Can I ask you why you dont want people to know? What is wrong with just saying straight up--Yep, I had lapband. I am taking control of my life.:cool2: I dont wear a sign signing I had lapband, but if someone asks me how I am losing weight, I tell them. Usually they dont know how it differs from bypass, so I inform them. I understand that it is private, but your weight loss will be visually public and there is no shame to our game! I hate confrontation too, but I would like to speak my piece towards this coworker so I would have my manager mediate. Regardless of whether you manager handles it or you do, this girl is going to get her little feathers ruffled and she will continue talking s* about your weight loss and your choice. So...take the power away from her! If you put it our there and inform people, she will have nothing to run her mouth about. There will be no secret for her to spill. You have made a choice for the better. Who gives a crap about the haters! Be proud of yourself.
  9. Hello to anyone reading Back in January I went to see my PCP about weight loss surgery, I've been considering it for at least 3 years now and always talked myself out of it by saying its the easy way out and trying to convince myself that all I have to do is eat less and work out more. Right! I have always been overweight. Even in my baby pics I look fat. Seriously, don't laugh! There wasn't a time when I wasn't bigger than everyone of my classmates, in addition to being fat, I was also taller! Odd ball, yes that's me. I'm 29 years old with no kids so I can't even use that as an excuse for my fatness, I'm really just fat! My family is fat! My mom has been overweight since a kid too and from what I hear so was her dad. Is there really a fat gene? Maybe that's my excuse...idk but I don't know why I'm fat. I don't think I eat anymore or any unhealthier than skinny people. In fact I know of some skinny people who won't stop eating. I grew up on a tiny island in the Caribbean where there wasn't access to junk food or fast food or endless options for dining out so I can't blame that but I have to say that at age 13 when I moved to NY, it was a different ball game. Cheap, quick and a variety of foods every where I looked. chips Cookies candy bars I didn't know what to eat first and i gained about 50 pounds in 1 year. Fast forward to today, I am 343 pounds! I don't have any obesity related ailments YET and that my friends is why I must do this. My first thought was to get the lapband done but the thought of having a foreign object in my forever really bothered me. Like really! 3 years of bothering me. So in the midst of researching lapband I was learning about other options. Bypass...thought it sounded good but I'm anemic, if they bypass the part of my stomach that absorbs Iron that I can't normally absorb anyway-this could be bad; very bad. Plus I am "paranoid" for a lack of better word about stomach cancer b/c my great grandma had it, also my grandma & mom has breast cancer and mom now has bone cancer. Obviously cancer is a big factor in my life. I want to a avoid this at any means possible- another reason why I need to do something about my weight. Not that skinny people don't get cancer but I would like to fit into the MRI machine if needs be to catch things early. Did I say I was paranoid?.... So I learned that with the bypass- the part of the stomach that just sits unused- well if there's cancer growing there; they can't stick a camera down there to check it out. Only way to spot it would be via CT scans that would be done every year. So lets say I get one in December and something starts growing in February...I won't know until the following December---if I'm still alive!! So...I'm sleeving it! I weighed all options and this seems to be the best of me. I've been reading some posts here about other people's experiences etc and a lot of new perspectives opened up to me. I seriously appreciate all of you for sharing. Even if you think it's minor and you post about it, it's helping someone and thats why I'm here. To learn as much as possible and to share as much as possible. I do want to post the documents I received from my doctor but will at a later time. Like what to eat etc and about the tests I have to do etc but will do that at a later time so if anyone was lurking like I was and kind of undecided or unsure...it may help. Anyway.. I welcome any info and will be glad to share any info I have, if you made it this far..(a lot I know) thanks for reading!!!
  10. My surgery (bypass) was yesterday the 27th. My surgeon said everything went well. He also repaired my hiatal hernia. Aside from the gas I was inflated with, I haven't had a lot of pain, just discomfort (I'd say 3 on a scale of 10). I took a nice long walk yesterday to help. I've been sipping icy cold water, which I know some have had problems with. Later this morning, I'm being discharged. Then the real fun begins. [emoji4]

    Medifast 5 & 1

I think some people use Medifast for their pre-op/supervised diet. As to using it long-term, post-surgery I don't know that you would want to. One concern is that with the bypass you have malabsorption so you wouldn't be getting all of the nutrition from the Medifast which is already minimal. Plus, it isn't cheap. Definitely talk to your surgeon before doing this.
  12. Hello everyone I am in the process of researching WLS. I am leaning toward the Mini Bypass and gastric plication. I wold like to know please: what was the cost of your surgery? I will be self paying since I have no insurance. What complications did you have afterwards? (hair loss, dumping, leaks, etc) What you wish you had known BEFORE the procedure. Sorry for so many question but I need to calm some fears so I can schedule a surgery next year. I have a few co-morbid conditions like sleep apnea, acid reflux, bad joints, depression, sugar addiction and high cholesterol for which I am taking meds for. Thanks in advance

    Parents & Other Relatives

Good for you. We don't even speak to my in-laws (long story there) but I think my own family would be judgmental enough. I didn't think about that-- I doubt any of them know that the band exists either. So if they did assume gastric bypass and ask me, I wouldn't be lying if I said no.
  14. Ah if you are old, then so am I and I am not ready to be! I was banded a little over a year ago, but did not really get started until last November, (I had a faulty port and had to have it replaced), so no you are not alone. Even though some days are hard, I would do it again in a minute. I feel it is a life saving thing for me, I was over 60lbs heavier and have gone from a size 24/26 to an 18. I am by no means done but I am very pleased with my slow steady progress. Best of luck.
  15. Hello all I am just wondering if anyone else had gastric bypass due to pcos? Just want to know how much it helped with the many many symptoms that come along with the pcos? I have see a decrease in my cravings for the carbs and the sweets and I actually got my period for the first time in a long time I am sleeping better . So I am just wondering if other people have the same pcos struggles

    Decisions decisions

The sleeve has a much lower mortality rate. With bypass, you can die a year later. It's scary. I am excited to get sleeved after the 1st of the year. nervous about the recovery, but a month is such a short time!! I think about how this time next year, I will be smokin hot! Loving to shop!! I can't wait to be able to wear normal clothes, and look good in them.
  17. Well I've been accepted but unsure whether to go did the full bypass or sleeve. .... The weight losses seem to be the same ....?

    Decisions decisions

My Surgeon explained to me that you lose more with the bypass. You will also have dumping syndrome and malabsorption issues. You must also be 100 lbs or more over weight. With the sleeve you don't have dumping and malabsorption issues as long as you take your daily vitamins. Based on my weight and general health ( which is good ) he thinks the sleeve would be best for me. I want to lose about 70 lbs, so I'm not a candidate for the bypass says he. It's a lot to take in, explore your options and take your time.

    Decisions decisions

It would be good to get pros and cons from an educational seminar but surgeons are biased too! I was sleeved and maintaining 160# weight loss. I lost slightly slower than many bypass, but not by much. I also think the relative negatives of the bypass are often exaggerated too. There are key differences however and if you have GERD, seriously discuss this with your surgeon because that is a long term risk for sleeve...like it can show up years post op. In my view they are both good procedures, I obviously preferred the sleeve and have done great with it but I strongly suggest that you do more research on Medline, via your surgeon etc.
  20. HI All, just finished my preop for gastric bypass surgery however the upper GI showed esophageal dysmotility and now have to have a test called esophageal manometry. Does anyone know if this can prevent me from having the surgery? Any input is welcomed, thanks!

    October sleevers?????

October 28th Gastric Bypass,........ soooo nervous 🤦🏻‍♀️
  23. Any time that cutting of the intestines is involved, there is a MUCH larger risk for infection and other surgical complications. Cut & Paste are computer commands - not something I want done to my body... The band is just a little choke-chain for your stomache. If your appetite starts to behave badly - you just yank on the chain. (aka - get a fill). If you have any life altering events - pregnancy or whatever - you can have the band unfilled until you are ready to resume your weight loss. You just can't do that with ByPass.
  24. My surgeon told me that people who have a gastric bypass tend to start putting weight back on after about 2 years. The beauty of the band is that if that happens you can simply have another fill.
