I had gout for the first time last year and it hasn't been and issue. Now I'm almost done with 2 weeks pre op high protein liquid n the gout came back. Will it get better if I'm going to spend my future life on high protein? What do you do beside drink a lot water. I'm am already doing that and still got it? Pls help
  2. Mine did. I have Blue shield of Ca. Initially I was going to take my band out and have the gastric bypass but I woke up from surgery without my band but they couldn't do the bypass either because my intestines are on the wrong side. Soooo my doctor said he can do the sleeve no problem and we got to work on getting a new approval. That was last week and I just found out today that they approved the sleeve. It helps that my doctor wrote a letter on my behalf and it only took them 5 days to approve it. So there is hope. Good luck!!

    Honey!

I found that in the beginning that if something bothered me, I gave it up and tried it again a couple of weeks later.

    After Surgery

Congrats Sydney! Congrats jillsko1! I'm going in on Wednesday 5/19 along with a bunch of other folks on here. Well, not literally, that would be quite a crowded operating room..... This is a great topic. I should have written a list down to refer to over the last couple weeks when things got tough with the pre-op diet, might have alleviated some of my grumpiness at times:-) Here are some of my things off the top of my head: Having energy throughout the day, not feeling so tired and defeated in the evenings. Playing sports - I was a good athlete once upon a time, and one of my goals is to rediscover that guy. Feeling attractive - I used to look in the mirror sometimes before going out and think to myself that I was a good looking guy! But I've been avoiding mirrors for a long time now. I know that's a bit superficial but I know that guy is in there and I want to feel that confidence again and know that I worked for it. Buying clothes at regular stores - no explanation needed here. Dating - I've used weight as an excuse for too long, even sabotaged relationships with people who found my fat self attractive. That's gonna end. I guess maybe these aren't all "every day" little things, but a lot of people take these things for granted. So I'll add that to the list: I want to take these things for granted too!

OMG - where to begin! 1. walk up steps without losing my breath! 2. walk without my lower back hurting! 3.Able to play with my 6 yr old without having the above 4. Making Love with Hubby and not covering myself up!!! 5. Looking good! 6. Feeling good! 7. Wearing a bathing suit on our Cruise in December instead of shorts and T-shirt! 8. Oh and wearing shorts during the summer instead of Capri's....the list could go on and on!!! Thanks for the great Post - made me remember why I will NOT cheat on my 2 week pre op liqiud only diet!
  6. Just a hopeful note for all the would be bandsters out there and the newbys. I never EVER thought I'd be posting something like this - I had read others' successful posts and still thought "that's them but i'll never get there". WELL... HERE I AM!!!!! I cannot believe I'm closing in on 100 pounds but it's happening! I'm so, so grateful to every one of you on this site that encourages and helps and spreads positivity. This site is wonderful and a big part of my success, I am sure of it. For anyone wanting my "tips" to the loss - here they are: It took me 5 fills and 4.5 months to feel ANY restriction. I now have 8.5ccs in 14cc band. I do not know if I'm in the green zone but I do have restriction and things get stuck and "hurt" going down when I do not chew well enough etc. This helps me psychologically because it makes me more disinterested in food (i.e., takes the "sport" or "fun" of eating away - which is what got me morbidly obese to begin with). Per my surgeon I'm at 800 calories per day - I stick to this about 85%-90% of time. I have a "cheat" day about once every week to 10 days. I go to about 1200 calories or so on that day. My surgeon and nurse care manager at health insurance both say this is actually a good idea as it keeps the body from plateauing (sp? LOL) by shaking things up a bit. I've hardly exercised - my guilty little secret is that I am waiting to "kick in" the exercise when I hit a plateau which I have not done yet. I know, I know, this is not good - it's my one "bad bandster" issue but I know I'll HAVE to do it at some point either because of a plateau or to maintain once at goal. I tell anyone that asks me how i'm losing the weight about the band (and I educate them on it when they seem interested/ask questions). This works for me because I care way too much what people think and it holds me very accountable - in other words I'd do about anything to avoid the embarassment of gaining weight when others know I had the surgery. Again, this works for me - not everyone. That's about it. YOU ARE ALL TRULY A BLESSING AND I LOVE THIS SITE. BEST OF LUCK TO US ALL ON OUR JOURNEYS!!!!!!!!!!

    Weigh-in Friday 10th July

krtork - Also, look at the Splenda and other artificial sweetners. I have learned to use them sparingly because they will make me retain Fluid. I sure to miss my Lipton Citrus Teas. I didn't make it out here last week because we were out of town. I have been sick and not really wanting to eat much so I am down. 210 was my bandiversay goal for this week and I made it. If I make the rest of them, I will get to onederland just in time. I had been running every day training for a marathon in December but I started having extremely bad heel pain and have found that I have heel spurs. My doctor says do anything I want as long as it doesn't hurt. Anything more than a brisk walk is still hurting. I would love to hear if anyone has any suggestions.

    Medical Leave

I took 2 weeks off which was fine for my job. I work in a Drs office. Probably 60/40 desk/running around but work 12 hr shifts. I'm glad I had 2 weeks off but could have gone back a couple of days earlier.

    Gas Pain

The thing is, no medication for "gas" relief is going to help, because this gas is in the abdominal cavity...it isn't inside the organs. It has to pass into the intestinal tract before it can leave the body, and the only solution to that is lots of movement. Whether it's rolling from side to side while laying in bed, getting up and walking frequently (not just for long stretches, it's better to do it less duration but more frequency), etc... Sometimes the stuff is just stubborn, it always takes me about 3-4 days to get rid of it (I've had three abdominal surgeries). After 2-3 days, that's generally when I start passing meaningful amounts out the "other" end and the pains start to subside a lot. But the only answer is movement, that's the only thing that gets the gas out.

    Quick & Easy Suggestions?

I'm only about 6 weeks out, but I keep the fridge stocked with cheese strings, meat, greek yogurt, apple sauce for snacks. If I need a quick meal that I haven't prepared for I have several cans of soup in the pantry (kinda high in sodium, but better than some options). I also set aside leftovers from the night before for lunches.
  12. I've been super busy the past 3 weeks and have slipped into some "grab & go" habits that aren't serving me very well. No loss for 2 weeks and today got on the scale and was up almost 2 pounds. I'm close to goal but it's been very elusive because I've gotten lazy about my choices. Anyone have some good standby meals that are quick and easy when you're on the go? One of my problems has been not making time for meals so I've noticed I grab a little of this and a little of that......which really translates to grazing all afternoon. Old habits die hard............ What are some favorites for healthy, high protein, low carb, bariatric friendly choices? Think it's time to clean out my kitchen and start over. Easy to get a little cocky since I've gotten closer to my goal weight.......which is exactly what I don't want to do!! Thanks for any input!!

    Clothes Shopping

I bought this really cute dress in a size 10 last week. Been eyeing it since it came to that store but a). Didn't feel the desire to spend $120 on it and . Didn't want to buy my current size (18-20..I'm pre op) if I wasn't going to stay this size longer. Well summer is almost over and they put this dress on clearance for$20!! They only has size 18 and size 10 left..so I scooped up the 10 I have been buying more clothes in mediums and large instead of 2xl. Also gives me motivation to fit it them :-)

    Please give me your opinion....

Hi, I would wait and see how the band tightens on you. Just give it one week! I had the same issues and I got too filled and since then have had a lot of problems getting it right! My fills didn't usually kick in until 2 weeks after them but everyone is different! I was so anxious myself that I went back and forth,,,fill, unfill, fill, unfill, you get the picture ,,it took the coordinator telling me to let it rest to stop me as I wanted it to work so bad and I was scared! Just hang in there and give yourself and the band (saline) time to settle. Just my Humble opinion. PS: if you mushed up what you ate it wouldn't have even been a full cup of food! Didn't seem too much to me but then I eat 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups per meal and I lost really well when I wasn't messing with the fills too much! Good luck!
  16. I was banded on 2/13. What I thought was restriction after the surgery was just swelling. After that went down in about one week, I could eat to the same proportions as before banding. I went to the doc at 3 weeks and they said they would give me my first fill. I could still eat a car if I wanted to!! Well, today they had me go for an upper gi then come to their office. They said that everything looked great. That first fill was 3cc's in my 10cc band. My doc is pretty agressive so she gave me another 3cc's for my second fill. I couldn't get the Water down so she took out 1cc leaving me with a total of 5cc. She said to have just liquids/mushies today and tomorrow then I can go back to solid food. Well, for dinner I had broccoli/cheese Soup to go from Applebees and was still starving (only had a yoghurt today since I couldn't eat for the upper gi) so I then had some cottage cheese, then I mashed up an avocado and ate that. To me, that STILL seems more than I should be able to eat after a fill. I keep hearing about how we're supposed to eat about 1/2 cup food per meal and I ate more than that after my fill. I'm thinking maybe 1/2 cc more. Anyway, so my first fill was at 3 weeks, and this, my second, was at 5 weeks. They said I can come back when I want for another fill if I'm not restricted. I originally had lost 13 pounds afer surgery and now that loss is only at 5 pounds so I seem to be gaining! Yikes! If I could have done this w/out the band I would have, but I need restriction. And no, it's not head hunger. I'm certain of that. I really tune in and see where I'm at. Should I get another fill? Marie
  17. Hey there! My surgery is 4 weeks away. I am wondering what I should go ahead and purchase ahead of time. Or what I should stock up on. I know the obvious protein drinks and vitamins but wanted to see if there is anything else that y'all know of so I can be as prepared as possible. Thank you!
  18. Good morning. If you have already had surgery, was there anything you did ahead of time (like during the 6 month weigh ins) to prepare yourself for the surgery? Or, is there something that you wish you had did that you think would have made things easier for you? I ask this because i am wondering, would it be good as I get closer to only have 1 meal per day and drink shakes the other 2 meals to make it easier for the 2 week pre-op liquid diet?
  19. I just don't know what to do... My first day of the two-week liquid diet is on Thursday, and my husband has planned for us to meet three other couples at the KC Royals game far tailgating and the baseball game. I'm just not sure how I will feel that first day! I might be just fine...I might be a hungry psychopath...I just don't know! I'm just nervous about being put in a situation on my very first day where I'll want to eat. The good thing is I can bring in unopened bottles of Water, so I can bring my crystal light flavoring and possibly a Protein shake. Ugh...should I go?

    Hair Regrowth

I have read lots of topics about hair loss but not much on hair regrowth. I had thin hair but a lot of it but now I would think I have lost about 50% of it. My question is which month did people start seeing good regrowth?? I will be 6 mths post op next week

    Pre Op Diet Nausia?

Ditto here, I am on day 10 and felt nausious during the first week but it has passed . I also felt dizzy a lot but the Dr said to not do as much physical stuff as I was doing (slow down LOL) I heat with firewood & its wood season so stackin up 10-15 cords was a little much apparently. You will get through the tummy upset, just keep your eyes on the prize !

    Weight Watchers post op?

My NUT told me that a lot of his patients that have kept the weight off long term did weight watchers about 2/3rds of the way to goal. He said he thought it was helpful because of the meetings, teaming up with friends and the weigh in's each week. The plan itself...the "meals" are still going to be too much for us. Our food choices will just be different than everyone else's because we need to eat really small meals and high Protein. I know the program too. Did it several times...very successful once, a long time ago. I just don't think I am to the point where I want to pay a weekly fee. I'm still paying for the surgery.....and will for another 2 yrs, more than likely. And I pay Planet Fitness each month too. A lot of my "me" money is already going out the door for this. But.....if I ever get to the point where I feel I'm getting off track, I will definitely revisit WW's. Also, I am at a weird point. Lots of stalls. Its discouraging. I am still well within the guidelines of the diet but I have noticed that I tend to eat a little more carbs than I did in the beginning. So....that's going to stop. I have gained 1lb since starting weight training last week (have only been doing cardio up till now) I'm hoping the weight training will help with this stall, lose, stall, lose cycle I've been in. Maybe after I put on a little muscle I can dip back into the carbs??
  24. With lots of determination, it's really hard but this journey is not an easy quick fix. Take comfort in the fact that thousands of us have done it and come through the other side. There will be tears and frustration but every time you see the scale move backward and the pants that were too tight are now too loose you give yourself a little boost. Everyone goes through the different stages and we are all here to help. Every stage is different and has its adjustments. Keep reminding yourself why your here and that every day/week is a new one. Don't get bogged down in what you haven't done, but what you have. Try and stay away from temptation as much as possible and believe in YOU.
