Family Dynamics - How do you deal with meals???
ShoppGirl replied to HealthierBefore45's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yea I guess I wasn’t very clear. What I meant to say is that if you and your husband do like the same things it shouldn’t be much different post surgery because you will just eat less of what he eats and focus on the protein having a few bites of veggies if you have room. In the very beginning you will be eating differenly of course but the liquid phase requires no cooking and the purée phase can be whatever your family is having puréed and if you don’t like that (I didn’t) it’s fairly easy stuff like refried beans. Soft food phase you may be able to plan a menu where you can eat what others do unless you have a really fussy tummy still but for sure once you return to normal foods you will be able to enjoy the same meal. This is all assuming that you make a lean protein, a veggie and probably another side for your hubby. Also, you may find that you get some very helpful tips for yourself and your kids in terms of nutrition because you will have a dietician or nutritionist that you work with most likely because this is often a requirement of your insurance and team. If it isn’t I really think you should consider seeing one anyways as they can be a great deal of help along this process. -

Family Dynamics - How do you deal with meals???

Sounds like your have your plate full at mealtime (pardon the pun). I saw this on a show about nutrition for kids. You make one nutritious thing that you know they will like so you know they will not go hungry but then put other options on their plate as well and let them eat what they want. Not sure iF this will work for one or both of your two but it seemed like a good idea to me. I guess the idea is to find more nutritious options that they do like. I definitely agree you have to worry about yourself first though. If you don’t, and you aren’t around Then who is gonna do it. Your health matters too. My husband and I cook our own meals most nights because we eat different things (we always have really). Perhaps yours could pitch In A bit?? Does he mind cooking?? If not, he may eat less take out if he gets to choose his own meals. It will be fairly easy for you through. If you cook a lean protein a starch and a veggie. You just eat the protein and skip the sides for the most part post surgery maybe having a few bites of veggies if you have room. -

Congratulations on your new home and your WL journey. It sounds like you’ve got two kids with sensory issues around foods, my son has ASD so I can relate. You just got to take care of you. The old saying about putting your own oxygen mask on in the airplane before you help other people is true. At first my family ate separately, but we all got over that and we eat together now. I just measure my portions out. The kid eats what he wants, some kid version of what I have like dinosaur chicken nugget when I have chicken. He has veggies on his plate that he might pass on, but he’s being offered healthy choices. He likes the veggie catchup and eats enough of that to qualify as a vegetable. He also started drinking a splash of coffee in a protein shake for breakfast! You just balance as best as you can, but take care of you first! -

Hello! I’m new here in the investigation stage of doing sleeve surgery. I met with a weight loss Dr in May and started naltrexone (I was already on high dose bupropion) and a high protein/low carb diet. We discussed sleeve surgery for later this year. I lost 10lbs that month despite going on a cruise , but found out just before the cruise that we would be moving over the summer. I pretty much put my weight on hold and went into survival mode dealing with the move and kids who didn’t want to move, etc. But now we’ve moved and settled in and I’m miserable - I can’t be active at all with my kids, clothes are uncomfortable, autoimmune disorders and pain are out of control, and life in general is hard! My new PCP let me go back on naltrexone (I already take bupropion) and I’m looking for the best surgeon near Manhattan, KS (seems like there’s a great option in Topeka and I watched their video yesterday ). Best news is that our insurance here actually will actually cover surgery after the first of the year! I’m concerned about feeding the rest of my family after surgery though. My 10 year old has behavior issues and food or not getting foods she wants is a big trigger. She wants carbs, carb, carbs! She eats me out of house and home. We’re working portion control and body positivity with her. My 8 year old has sensory and feeding issues, barely eating, very underweight, and we’re trying to get his caloric intake UP! And my husband…well… We do convenience foods/fast food often. I have so many questions about how this will all look if I have surgery! Are you making 2 completely different meals for yourself and your family? (I already often make something different for the one who doesn’t eat anything!) How do you manage family food needs while meeting your own as well? I’m afraid of turning to even more convenience foods for family. This seems selfish though. It feels like such a hard balance as a family after surgery! Can anyone relate and tell me how you’ve managed? Sorry so long - thanks for reading! -
Not vegetarian but the majority of my diet are fruits and vegetables (7 - 14 servings per day). My diet is 50% to 60% carbs. Beans and lentils are great from the beginning (i e. pureed stage and after), tofu as well (soft at first, then firm). I love Tofu and vegetable stir-fry dishes or soups. Anything soybean helps a lot with protein. There is always vegan protein powder too.

My progress is very similar as yours. Sleeved on 9/1. I'm a little under 5'2". Started the pre-op diet at 203 and surgery weight was 199. Since surgery date I've lost 14, with 7 of that during the first week. Mine has gone a tad up and down a little which was disappointing. I went up 2 lbs in one day! The day before I had drank Gatorade Protein sugar free drink which had a lot of sodium. Good for 10 grams of protein but not the salt. I am being more careful with that now. Just gotta do what is best for us individually and, as you said, don't stress about it. Best of progress to us all! -
YOUR favorite protein recipes and YOUR favorite sugar free drinks?
ShoppGirl replied to Erin18's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I haven’t tried alot of the powders. I tried a couple and they just didn’t blend well so I stick to ready made shakes. I like the premiere protein caffe latte (it has caffeine In it though so ask your team first). I also like the crystal light drink enhancers. Their is also cirkul water enhancers if you like to play with the intensity and have a variety of flavors. They sell the starter kits at bed bath beyond but they also have a website. -
Awesome! I know it will be more challenging, but I’m up for it. Thank you for the protein powder suggestion!!

Hi, I am not 100% vegan or anything, but I do prefer plant based as much as possible. It can be a little more challenging to get your protein in. I have been using a good protein powder though and it helps. Just start planning now. This is the Protein I use BTW https://1stphorm.com/collections/protein/products/vegan-power-pro

So my first week big loss… next three weeks stall… they suggested I up my calories and protein… now I gained! 🤦🏽♀️ This is really frustrating! Im tracking everything - weigh and measure every bite. I’m hoping there’s going to come a point where my body just gets it together and everything clicks… I’m just wondering when that will be. Right now I’m feeling very bloated and constipated (things moving, but slowly). -
Thank you! When I looked around at restaurants in the parks we are visiting it seemed to be like anywhere else. American food, Mexican, Deli like places, etc. Just as if you go anywhere to eat, but with Disney prices. haha If I happen to come across anything that really stands out for better options I will definitely pass it along!

October 2022 surgery support
Momsaysimaoops replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I joined a support group and was warned not to stock up on protein shakes before surgery as your tastes change for a few months after. People often stock up on what they like and then hate it once the surgery has been done. I was able to order a bunch of sample packets which i plan to try when i get home, then i can order what I like at that time. (im in Europe where the ready made shakes are not as plentiful or varied so making my own will be my go to.) So far Celebrate vitamins and Bariatric fusion have been good. Bariatric fusion will even send you a free sample kit of their multivitamins both chew and chewable tablet as well as calcium chews! -
I'm sort of in a similar position, I do have a few family members 20+ min away but my dad is fighting a 15 year battle with chronic lymphatic leukemia and my mom is taking care of her older sister with alzheimers so basically an adult sized toddler. So I avoid asking either of them for anything. I have 1 daughter who just had a baby so don't ask her either other than to bring the baby to me to snuggle which helps a lot when im having a rough day but otherwise I'm disabled and stay home alone most of the time. I can definitely relate on the lack of a support system. I'm having a tough time getting enough protein and drinking more on top of that. They want me on 80-100 grams of protein a day and so far 65g is as much as I've gotten and barely drank anything else. Not having any food at all is tough. I bought a ninja creami and have started freezing the fruit flavored clear protein and making it into sorbet so I feel like im actually eating something, next will be the chocolate one, I hope its like chocolate ice cream if so I think I'll have a much easier time tricking myself into getting the whole 80-100g in plus some more zero Gatorade on top of that. I'm often online not sure how but if it's possible to message me on here if you ever need a buddy to talk to id be happy to chat.

Multivitamins, try Barimelts. Bariatric advantage orange is not that great. Well it is better if you don’t chew and just let it slowly dissolve. My dr did advise can use Flintstone as well. Bariatric Advantage calcium chews are good but later I will switch to the CVS brand after I heal up and see how things are tolerated. Barimelts Vd3. B12. Biotin. Premier protein. Coffee one is not good, it has caffeine. Want to avoid caffeine after surgery. Try premier protein cake batter, peanut butter cup, Carmel, rootbeer is okay. I hear pumpkin spice was good. muscle milk zero sugar vanilla,Chocolate and strawberry (they are less sweet than premier vanilla chocolate and strawberry) Also use bariatric Advantage fiber. Vital proteins non flavor. Also you can sugar free sauces G Hughes sugar feee sauce, skinny girl dressing, and Jordan’s skinny syrups are good as well. I like use the syrups in the shakes. Like a mocha premiers chocolate shake, or I can caramel. Or to a Carmel shake I can add vanilla syrup. Also syrups are good in black decaf coffee with 1 pack if stevia. Light cheese string, i buy the Walmart brand but I think it taste better at room temperature Just know after surgery, your hormones will change and so will your taste buds.

For premixed Protein drinks, I'm a fan of Fairlife Nutrition Plan Chocolate. Out of the calcium chewables, I'd rate Celebrate at the top, along with Bariatric Advantage. Bariatric Pal has their own branded ones and those are not bad, just not a good as two above. The worst ones in my opinion are the pro care brand. Some people must like them, but I found them to be so bad I threw them away. -
I know that this post is a couple years old... But for other people who will see it and need advise. The Darker the hair, the more noticeable the thinning will be. The contrast of your scalp and dark hair will definitely stand out. Short cuts with lots of volume is a better option.

My Doctor has always said Protein First, if you are still hungry a bit of steamed veggies, if you are still hungry, go for a fruit. Following this, I tend to always be on the lower side of carbs and sugar without even trying. Seems to be working well.

I actually made my own. I kept premier around the house, but I found them very heavy after surgery. I will do something like unsweetened vanilla almond milk, PBFit powder, vanilla protein powder and sugar free grape jam. I have several different ones. I also drank a lot of Kettle Fire Bone Broth. I went crazy getting three bariatric cookbooks and pinning tons of recipes on pinterest but I feel I was super ready. I started purees yesterday and started with egg salad, no problem. Today I am making a bunch of mini muffin ricotta bakes and going to freeze the ones I don't eat today. -

The two brands that i like are Premier Protein and Fairlife. Premier Chocolate, Root Beer Float (such a nice treat!) and Chocolate Peanut Butter (recommended by another poster here) are my favorites. I was skeptical of the Chocolate Peanut Butter but it tastes like a Butterfinger - could be trouble Fairlife Strawberry and Salted Caramel are pretty good. Fairlife has the best Vanilla, IMO, as I think that particular flavor almost always tastes chalky to me. -

I agree with what many of the others have said...for me, on day 4 post-op (still on pain meds) I didn’t measure some soup and after I ate it, I immediately had stomach upset, then nausea and a few hours of crampy diarrhea. I thought it was lactose or too much protein powder, but after eliminating those suspects, turns out I was just too full. I went back and measured and I had consumed over 7oz of soup in a swollen pouch that can - at best - hold 2-5oz. Now I know better!! I have been diligent on small, small sips, slowly eating & measuring my liquids/purees/soups and it has never happened again. Hope that helps! PS. You are not going to ruin anything. Except maybe some clothing or bedding if you don’t make it in time -
Optifast - Green spores??
Nepenthe44 replied to heatherdbby's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein shakes in general are basically bacterial growth media with flavoring, so that's not unusual. (Once the growth really gets going, there's nothing I've found that gets the smell out. Buy extra bottles if you're forgetful and don't clean them out quickly every time.) 2 hours is a little fast though. And I don't remember anything liking Optifast. -
New here, 3yrs post op, hoping to connect w others who are struggling nutrionally

Hi there! I'm New here and very excited to be here! Congrats on recognizing your pitfalls. I too am in a similar place, RNY December,2019. Loss 100 lbs, to date I've gained back 30. I've stopped beating myself up and taking myself more seriously about why I had the surgery and looking at my pitfalls, which are potato chips! With that being said I am now eating a little better, I still have trouble getting in a lot of food. So I try to start each morning with my protein shake and with that I'm usually full for the day and it gives me anywhere from 65 to 75 grams of protein. I've been trying to incorporate another protein, which is difficult for me because I'm not hungry, I never hungry. So I try to have a little chicken, turkey, or some other protein. I love now to eat a lot of vegetables, salads, and fruits which I now try to substitute these for the chips! I'm also getting ready to start exercising on a daily basis. With that being said, this is a journey, lifelong journey, lifestyle change that will greatly improve my life. And because I love living and being with family and exploring new things I feel more determined than ever to embark on this journey! So again congrats to you on recognizing where you are and what you have to do and blessings and success to you on this journey to improve your health, your life!
