Bob, I work for he federal government in an agency that regulates food. cynthiarm2000, I admire you for eating the way you do. I would very much like to be eating organic...grass fed...ethically treated...minimally processed...uncured.. ...foods. I would like to have my own chickens, so I know they are humanely treated in the eggs I eat. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to purchase organic, grass-fed, ethically treated products. They do cost more than the factory farmed ones in the grocery store. Working full time, I don't have the time to raise my own chickens. How has my identity changed since surgery? I'm now called "skinny". I concentrate on getting my Water in, Protein in, taking supplements, getting regular exercise and doing things one day at a time. I try not to preach weight loss surgery to those I am so tempted to prosleytize to. I know that people have to come to their own decision about weight loss surgery, since it is highly personal and everyone is different. Before surgery, I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Now I have to do a considerable amount of planning regarding what I will eat, when I will eat it and how I will prepare it. Because I am not a cook, work full time and have a busy life, I live on GENEPRO Protein powder and Quest bars right now. I would like to do more cooking when I retire in 7 years. I hope to raise chickens in 7 years but I'm thinking that may change too. I would like to travel when I retire as well. Having chickens to take care of and traveling don't work well together. I think you'll find some adjustments to your occupation as a "food guy" but I wonder if it may give you an opportunity as well. You will be in a position to create new recipes that are high in protein and lower in carbs. IMHO there will be an opportunity in the near future for those businesses catering to people like me who are needing high protein, low carb meals. I notice advertisements are proclaiming how much protein their products have. I LOVE it when I can go to a restaurant and they have something tasty on a menu which fits into my food plan. Something that doesn't come in a HUGE portion that is high protein and low carb. I don't know if my rambling helps you or not. I wish you success with your surgery and hope you have an easy recovery. Blessings, Kathleen

Going thru Withdrawal! Any helpful ideas?
Asher325 replied to dmaddox1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I start my 2 week liquid diet on Tuesday the 9th. My surgery is the 23rd. I'm glad I found this forum to help me with what's to come after I start the liquid diet. I am going to be on strictly liquids with Sf jello and Sf Popsicles. I have no doubt this is going to be the hardest thing I've ever done in my life yet. It makes me really nervous. But I know how important it is for surgery and to prepare. I'm concerned bc right now I am taking a lot of med and get really nauseous if I don't eat with them. Also hypoglycemic, so I'm sure I will feel a few waves of nausea, but just have to keep up with the protein drinks and take it a day at a time!! -
Hey there. I know what you mean. I work in a food coop and have most of my life. I have actually decided to leave the coop after my surgery and work in a non-food environment. I have always been the modern day hippie, only eating organic...grass fed...ethically treated...minimaly processed...uncured.. ...screaming for food justice....all of that. Now, I'm going to leave all of it. It is hard because my friends are all in the same business. I don't know how things will change for me. Sometimes I think this is just my test and if I can make friends with food and be in this environment without overeating that would surely be a true sign of success. On the other hand, I've been obese since I was 9 years old and I so want to give myself a break and remove the temptation from my life. I want to stop telling myself to buck up and resist and feeling bad when I can't. For me, leaving the foodie life is part of my determination to be good to myself. I have other talents I can develop. This WLS is the start of a whole new life for me...and I am determined to make this new life better.

So full of post-op questions :) Is it normal not to reach your protein goals 5 days post op?
joatsaint replied to tfarr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc never discussed how quickly I would be able to reach the recommended protein goals. And I don't know how many weeks before I finally reached my protein goals. But for weeks, I was only able to eat a can of soup a day. I didn't worry about it - as long as I felt okay and didn't have any health problems. I knew I'd get there eventually. My primary focus during that time was to stay hydrated. I knew I had enough fat stored on me to keep me fed... enough to last me through a Zombie Apocalypse! -
Federal BCBS paid for my sleeve 100%, minus the copayments for the hospital and my surgon!
AhnaLucille replied to Ambwee's topic in Insurance & Financing
thanks for this thread. I've been a bit anxious about getting the sleeve and which insurance to go with. My current bcbs MI pays for almost everything I started the process in Oct. I found out my insurance is changing for 2015 and now need to pick fed BCBS basic or standard. . But from reading post around the internet. It sounds like I should pick basic for less out of pocket expense. My PCP sent my letter out today! Next week I should hear from the surgeons office to set up my consultation. I can't wait! I already did the psych evaluation. I've had 2 weigh ins but only 1 counts and my 3rd one next week (I need 6). But with the new insurance I'll only need 3 months of nutritional counseling. So I need to look into that. Oh and it's mandatory by the surgeon to go to at least 2 support group meetings. I've missed the two available. So, I have to make Jan and Feb.. As long as everything runs smoothly and I do what I need to. I could have my surgery Mid-March. So now, I tap my toes until I get the call and thanks to everyone that posted here. Your information was helpful and eased my anxiety, a bit. -

@@Rovobay Sorry to hear that! I'm very surprised a federal insurance plan doesn't cover it. I have BC BS of Massachusetts through my husband's company (a private engineering firm). -

Protein powder recommendations?
Dreamingofhealth replied to boosh10's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
So yeah. ... they cancelled my order and refunded my money. So weird! I tried getting a hold of them and no reply. I'm a little mad as I have been waiting for days for this. Does anyone know where I can order the Gene pro in Kelowna BC Canada?? Thanks so much! Sheena -
I went there after 2 different hospitals and surgeons left me feeling hopeless. Has anyone else went to the BC and what was your experience? I went to the one in Ypsalanti Michigan, about 2 hours away. Loved it.

Freak out pre-op... tell me I am not alone.
WL WARRIOR replied to Sassafrassa's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Normal is just a setting on the washing machine. It is typical to get nervous before major surgery. I got to a point when I was fed up feeling sick and being mentally and physically unhealthy. I am a single mom with a 10 year old child. His father died due to some circumstances that were controllable if he had only dropped his pride and tried harder. I don't want to die in 10 years due to obesity related illnesses. That would be a hard blow for my son to bear knowing that his other parent died of something that was controllable. This surgery helps put your destiny or future in your hands. Yes, there is a complication chance. But statistics show that the chances are incredibly low. The chances of dying from obesity related illness is larger if you continue on the same path. Others have written a list of pros and con's to help remind them why they are going through with this surgery. If your list doesn't help put you at ease, maybe you aren't ready yet. I wish you luck no matter whatever decision you choose! -
Need private insurance advice
Kindle replied to fordgirlalways's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in Idaho and have Blueshield (BC and BS are separate here). I was not able to find any carrier that offered any kind of individual policy (rider or major medical) that covered WLS. I think if you live in a state that has opted out of WLS, a group policy is the only way you will get coverage. I Ended up going self pay at Obesity Control Center in TJ last December. Best money I ever spent. Good luck....hope you figure things out. -
3 weeks out and end of first stall! yay! :)
mhugueley replied to mhugueley's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Its terrible!!! I lost that 17 lbs that first week and then my scale did not move for 2 weeks and one day....It was really hard! I just stayed positive bc all of my clothes are getting loose. I searched stall threads on here and see that everyone goes thru it. Some people stall for a month!!! But if you look at peoples tickers you see that they obviously surpassed their stalls bc they had met goal by now. So I just kept with the program and it finally broke. Im sure there will be many more along the way. -

Do You Really Need Vitamin D?
labwalker replied to Elizabeth Anderson RD's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Mr. doctor had me tested for Vitamin D, and advised that I needed supplements. I took them, as prescribed. This was based on my bi annual blood work. Personally, non peer reviewed information as presented above is pure BS! I listen to my doctor, not a wanna be internet specialist with no credentials. Sorry, but that is the bare truth. What the hell is a Nrd??? Goodgle searches bring up nothing! Is that a recognized medical degree?? -
The only pain I experienced was with the drain after surgery, after it was taken out I felt much better! I'd check with your doctor about the pain bc it could be something that needs attention. Hoping all is well soon!

Know what happens when your a**, b**bs, and stomach all deflate?
Lani789 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I found out....about three months out and I can now wear an XL sweatshirt...but here's the real news...it hangs straight down past the cr*tch, so if I were 30 years younger I could put on leggings and wear it like a dress! Who knew deflated body equals clothes that hang straight down? -
Yay! I have BCBS Fed and it took about 8 days so don't get discouraged if it takes a little while!

So as you can see by my post title I am absolutely beyond angry. After doing so well busting my butt to do m pre op diet, meeting all these goals. it turns out my company is being bought out, so I and my surgeon have to push hard and fast to get my surgery in before the end of the year due to change sin benefits for the new company taking over. Well we submitted just before thanksgiving. I have Tufts Cigna Carelink, its a joint insurance through both tufts and cigna. Well they decided to deny my surgery today. Why you may ask? well they said I don't have 3 months of continuous care . Which is bull because I do. And they have all the clinical notes of same showing it. But my surgeons office says cigna pretty much denied every first try outright. So now I have a peer to peer with my surgeon and their doctor who denied my surgery on this Friday. Here is the real problem. Now if this process goes any longer all the money I have spent on testing etc all the time off, all the sacrifices will be for nothing because while my new insurance may indeed cover bariatric surgery ( its a BCS plan) It does not have my surgeon and team in its network list. Meaning I would have to start from scratch with another whole team. So I'm thinking of just blowing up this whole diet tonight....f&^% all the work i've put in, ....sorry im really almost overcome with anger, I honestly do not think I could do all this prep work again. and the new company would never give me the time off to do the surgery, they would make me file for FMLA leave which I couldn't do as I couldn't afford to be out of work without pay. So the whole thing would be one giant waste of time and energy. I am not normally a pity person, but I do not see a light at the end of the tunnel at this point in time. And if there is a light its likely to be followed by a train. sigh Thanks for listening.

Hey Darci! Welcome to the 'losing team'. I sure hope you can join us on Dec 20th at the Perkins in Fridley. I am one-month post-op this week. I have an appt. with my NUT and nurse on Friday for diet review and weigh-in. I don't feel any different but my pants are a little looser. That's a good sign. Hope you can make it. You can find me on FB (Lori Feltl). It is easier up connect there - on the November Sleevers (private group page). I like it better bc the info is better organized than this site. No offense b-pal. -

Okie_RN replied to thenovelist's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 33 years old, a RN, and a mother of 2 daughters. I weighed 237 as of this morning. I actually work on a surgical floor that performs hundreds of bariatric surgeries a month. I have struggled with my weight since I was in elementary and have a huge "fluctuation" problem. Just last week (yes last week) I weighed 231 and three before that I weighed 242. It just hit me one day that I was fed up with struggling with my weight and dealing with diabetes, so I made the call. I started my pre op liquid diet yesterday.. Man it's a head game for real!! My surgery date is 12/16/14. I am nervous and excited at the same time. I really enjoy reading all of your posts! So inspiring. I just pray I have success with this as I would like to watch my children grow old, and live to enjoy their children too! -

MrsMurky721 replied to MrsMurky721's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How are you doing now @@GenaW828 ? My husband is doing a lot better. I only had actually SAY once that I was irritated bc he was eating unhealthy food in front of me. After that he got the message and has been super supportive. My doc is pretty lenient with the pre op diet and I think that was my problem. So I made it more strict for myself, only allowing Protein shakes, certain Soups, and one piece of chicken a day. Since putting that limit on myself I've done a lot better! -
