    May Sleevers?

Ask your surgeon and nutritionist. That was my big issue. My husband was amazed that with all the complications and life changes I would have to make, my biggest worry was coffee. I love coffee. My surgeon said I could have a cup a day with frothed milk. I am 2 weeks post op and can only get about a half a cup down, but I get the taste and I am happy with my daily coffee fix.

    Inner thigh lift

Awesome! I hope you are feeling good! My surgeon gave me a 90% wound complication with the thigh surgery. I am in desperate need of it though. I'm glad you are doing well with it! I had my pannis approved by insurance and my surgeon said once I get to goal we have a good chance of getting my thighs covered because they are the most significant he has seen. Your thighs look great by the way!
  3. I was at at the end of my 29th year when i got sleeved. I had actually gotten a referral in 2012 but tried to do it myself and failed miserably time and time again like every other time. So glad i did it when i did. I don't have kids yet and had diabetes, elevated bp and elevated cholesterol. None of those are issues now and i am now 30 and almost 8 months post op. Get it as early as you can. I was more ready when i got it so im not too upset. Just wish i had gotten it before i had all the obesity complications. 4. I have been researching gastric bypass since November 2016. My surgery is less than 2 months from now. I was somewhat familiar with it before then but not fully educated on it. What I am learning as time goes by is that reading posts on this site, viewing youtube videos plus the research I do on my own & taking notes is so beneficial. The more information I surround myself with and comprehending that information makes me feel more secure with my decision to have the surgery. Learning the possible outcomes whether it be a complication a rare complication and or what is normal gives me a sense of awareness that will help if I encounter anything post op and or during recovery period. The more you know and understand gastric bypass and your responsibilites the better your results. This surgery is not for those who refuse to follow their doctor's instructions. My doctor stated to me that he puts safety on the top of his list with his patients. That stuck to me and I appreciate him for saying that. So, that means the patient also needs to put safety on top especially during the healing process. The whole purpose of the body needing time to heal properly and fully is that we have to follow the instructions given to us because it was designed for us so we can be successful in healing and then progressing on to the next step. I dont want to disappoint my surgeon and I definitely do not want to disappoint myself. This is about choice. This road is a journey that takes time and patience.
  5. so i had my surgery on the 18th, everything went well, no complications, got discharged the next day. told me that if i dont go to the bathroom by sunday to take mirolax. so i did half dose last night& the rest this morning. i just wanna know if anyone has any suggestions that will make me go to the bathroom. sorry if its a bit tmi but its scaring me because i am in discomfort from being bloated and it makes me not want my protein shakes, and me not having protein shakes makes me incredibly dizzy and weak, which makes me unable to walk a lot which is what i should be doing to let the gas out. i just wanna know if anyone had this same problem and what would they recommend

    Complications with Mexico Bariactric Center

I completely understand that complications are a risk but like you said my situation was unique and should have been treated as such. A Dr is only as good as their judgement. I have to believe that all this happened for reason even if that reason is only to make my surgeon think twice before he does this again. Someone older and I'm worse health may not be able to rebound from such an issue.
  7. I'm sorry to hear about your complications. Hopefully you will get sorted out soon. I can't speak to the issue of appropriate standard of care, but I wouldn't think they owe a refund. You paid for the surgery and got it. Complications are a risk every patient faces. The surgeon obviously made a judgement call.. and perhaps it was the wrong one in your case, hindsight being what it is. Many band to sleeve revisions are carried out at the same time, so it's not some unusual thing. Hopefully the surgeon will learn something from your case, so as to not make that error in the future (assuming the condition of your stomach was unusually bad and therefore called for a more conservative approach).
  8. I read through that thread so it is funny that you would post it here now lol. I agree with the premise of his post. I want and hope to achieve a permanent and sustainable life style. By doing this I will reach both my health and weight goals. I think we have to be brutally honest with ourselves if we are going to figure out what we are willing to continue doing long term. i will follow my doc/nut plan for the first couple of months because I do not want complications and I want to maximize my chances for success. I will gradually adopt the healthy diet and exercise that keeps me where I want to be and is sustainable. I am not a gym person, never was and never will be. I prefer walking, hiking, biking...etc.. I am looking at this as a tool to help me achieve positive change, but I very much still plan on enjoying my life. I want to be around to watch my grandchildren grow up and I want to be active well into my senior years.
  9. Morning all. Has anyone had any luck getting a refund from MBC after complications? I was a band to Sleeve revision and immediately developed a stricture. I was unable to eat for 2 months, was hospitalized immediately after after returning home, sent home with an NG tube, and have started the process of dilations. All 3 surgeons I've seen of the US said the standard of care would have been to stop after removing my band and seeing what bad shape my stomach was in(full of scar tissue, adhesions and ulcers) and not proceeded to Sleeve. It's so upsetting that all these problems could have been avoided! I'm trying to talk to the business office now to get some kind of refund. It has cost me over $5000 since I've been home from these complications. I understand sometimes things happen but there is also bad judgement and greed at play. Drs are to "First do no harm" Mexico or US a Drs first responsibility is to do what best for his patients. Just so frustrated.
  10. You are four days out right now. At four days out I was not exercising. At this point I recommend leisurely walking to prevent clots and complications, but nothing more intense. The next couple of months are for healing and getting acclimated with your new sleeve. I didn't resume formal exercise until three months out. I started with a walk/jog routine. Now I run an average of 30 miles a week, either outdoors or on a gym treadmill. When I want a break from running, I use the stationary bike, stairmill machine, or elliptical trainer at the gym. Exercise is beneficial for cardiovascular health and weight control. However, it is not a main driver of weight loss as we've all been led to believe over the years. Fat loss occurs with good dietary choices. Cardiovascular health and body recomposition occur with exercise. https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/exercise-is-not-total-energy-expenditure/ http://drspencer.com/exercise-for-health-not-weight-loss/ https://criticalmas.com/2012/04/fat-loss-and-the-case-for-less-exercise/
  11. so i'm on my day 4 pre op...2nd day was the worst....was very irritable and moody.... day 3 it got better and day 4 i'm rocking it so far... my go to items so far are the 4 flavors of the premier protein drinks...caramel and vanilla are my favorite... i purchased from amazon the variety pack of NECTOR protein packets...fuzzy navel was delicious.... i also make chicken/ beef broth from the cubes....i like to keep it simple....if i get to complex i get over whelmed...... i do like to put my protein shakes on ice and in fancy glasses...hope this helps...this doesn't have to be to complicated

Has Anyone Had a Second Sleeve?

Im supposed to be getting the dual so in a year im goin for another surgery if the sleeve does not work how they want it to work that WLS is a little more complicated so they wanted me to loose a lot of weight befor they did it BigBodyBombFace
  13. I liked the post. You made some great points. I did hear a story about someone through my surgical group who ate a chip the day after surgery who did open her stomach and cause complications. So I don't know that it's 100% accurate what you said. Also in respect to caffine or alcohol... I know there is a medical reason and that is while your new stomach is forming you don't want to cause ulcers. But maybe the length of times can be exagerated sometimes. My NUT said to wait a month while my surgeon said to wait only 2 weeks. Friday is my 2 week mark and I am seeing my surgeon that day. I am excited to have my first coffee on that day and I am doing my part by waiting until then. -Joe M.
  14. I'm surprised that nobody has responded to this post. All I can do is tell you that as a registered nurse and gastric bypass patient I've been very happy with the program at Duke University, specifically Dr. Chan Park and his staff. I had been told by some colleagues that the preop and postop program of care is impressive. Based on what I have heard from others in discussion about the presurgery experience, Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery is likely to involve a more comprehensive and sometimes complicated process of assessment and training. I'm very happy with the results but wasn't totally thrilled while I was waiting to be approved for surgery. They did the right thing for me by forcing me to challenge myself prior to the surgery. Be wary of a surgeon that rushes you into surgery if there's a a big psychological reason underlying your disordered eating and/or self-care deficit (I said "if" -- not everyone is as hot a mess as I was/am still-sorta). People do travel from afar to have their surgery with Duke, I've noticed. It was out of the way for me but still no farther than my old work commute.
  15. I 'd be interested too. I have hiatal hernia . My doctor reccommended by pass instead of sleeve due to the complication of heartburn . I have maybe 100 lbs or less to lose. Bypass sèems more extreme to me Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. Everyone is correct. We are all different. You'll hear that every time you post a question like this. But here is my story. I am four weeks out from my surgery. spent 8 days in the hospital with complications. Developed a blood clot in my lung. I also have myasthenia gravis which is an auto immune disease that attacks the signals my brain sends my muscles, making exercise very difficult. So 8 out of my 29 days in the hospital and weakness from my disease and a painful blood clot and in all reality a sedentary 29 days. I've lost 30 pounds. I imagine I'd be much better off if I could get more cardio in and as I get stronger I will. so that's my story.
  17. Just wanted to share an exchange I had with my insurance company today (fepblue basic). Right now I'm going through the process with a local bariatric clinic, but am keeping Mexico, Vegas, Florida Medical tourism surgeons in case I receive an insurance denial (BMI is 35.1) . If insurance approves, it's a great deal, but if they deny, I'm not paying the $18500 cost. I am also not sure if I want to wait till October. I asked (via secure portal) if I had surgery in Mexico, away from my home state, was cash pay, or anything other than approved and paid for by fepblue, Would complications be covered? Such as a stricture or a leak. I also asked if there was any stipulations regarding the original surgeon or facility needing certain accreditation, (JCI, Center of Excellence, Surgeon of Excellence, etc) Their response can be seen below. This makes me feel so much better about considering less expensive (yet fully qualified) programs. Complication insurance quote was almost $500 - I think I'd feel less pressure to purchase it now. Mrs. Wood, Medically necessary corrective measures needed to correct complications arising from any procedure, whether the original procedure was approved or not, no matter where the original procedure occurred or who the surgeon was, would be considered for coverage and payment; the corrective procedure would not automatically be excluded or denied but would be considered as any other medically necessary procedure would be.Sincerely,********Customer Service AdvocateFederal Employee ProgramBlue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina

Day 5 - suprised to be hungry

I remember having intense hunger around day 4-7. You need to stick to your post-op diet and what your doctor tells you to eat. If necessary, sleep more or distract yourself, but don't stray from the diet plan because you would risk complications. Just be careful please and don't eat chicken.

Switching from the Sleeve to the Roux en Y

I haven't had any reflux or hernia problems pre-surgery. I have about 120 pounds to lose. I'm worried about losing enough weight and also dumping and gerd (I don't want either one). Also I want to lose all the weight...but really top priority is feeling the best and fewest complications...and I really dont want to go through a second surgery.

Signs of slip or erosion? Please help

Hello - to follow up, I have had my band removed and have been without it for a couple of months now. I feel immeasurably better. I've been able to get sleep at night now that the reflux has stopped, and being freed of all the smaller unpleasant things that come with the band I feel like a normal person again and like I've got my body back (just speaking for myself, I know other people love their bands and removal feels like the end of the world - for me, I'd come to feel like this thing inside my body was alien and giving me a lot of anxiety for a number of reasons, the reflux and loss of sleep was the physically urgent part of it). About the operation: my surgeon told me I did not have very much scar tissue. The wounds are healed nicely. I stayed overnight in hospital following the surgery, I was able to go home the following day. I was on pain relief and an anti-neausea med for 11 days until I felt I didn't need them any longer (though the port wound gave me some pain during the nights after I came off the meds, trying to turn over in bed, the port wound would wrench horribly for the first 2 weeks or so). All in all it took about 3 weeks to feel recovered and normal, but things really improved day-by-day around the second week. I've been at a healthy weight for a couple of years now though, so I don't doubt easy recovery is largely down to that as well as being young. I feel for people who take much longer to get over the surgery. I was really scared leading up to the surgery, in particular frightened about any complications from the anaesthesia, but I am so immensely relieved that it is all done and over with now.
  21. I'm drinking a shake or eating every 2 to 3 hours so I won't get hungry. Ensure you DRINK the water too. I'm in the restroom every 15 minutes! It's tiresome, but we HAVE to ensure no complications. YOU CAN DO THIS! ASK GOD FOR STRENGTH. I'VE ALREADY SAID A PRAYER FOR YOUR STRENGTH. YOU CAN DO THIS!! Feel scared

It's hard. You here so many success stories and hardly any with complications. I am so scared that I will never feel good again. Thanks for letting me know I am not alone
  23. Hi Everyone. I am 10 days post op and laying in bed crying my eyes out. I have been overweight for 10 years and thought all my prayers were answered when I finally got my approval for surgery. I followed the presurgery diet and my bmi was under 40 so I as told it would be a safe journey. I had surgery and the same day I let fainting and my heart rate was super high. The next day they realized I had internal bleeding and had to go back in for surgery. Two days later I as much worse and had to get a couple of blood transfusions. After a week I came home for started feeling so much better. Yesterday I woke up with a swollen lymph node in my neck and I feel more tired. I am so nervous i am going to keep getting complications. SORry so long but nobody seems to understand especially because it was an elective surgery

    successful sleevers?

If you work with your sleeve, losing weight post-op is easy. This is the easiest I have ever lost weight with the least amount of stress. The most important thing is to follow your post-op diet strictly the first 6 months. The stages of the post-op diet is not just to reduce complications but to also change your relationship with food and teach you to eat again properly. People advance their stages, don't follow a plan and miss that chance. The first 6 months you are healing so you have the most restriction. This restriction is a great tool to enforce healthy eating habits and make them natural. Example, a proper portion of meat for anyone is 3 to 4 ounces. Post-op you have to work up to eating 3 to 4 ounces of dense protein. The time it takes to work it to that and learn you are completely satisfied with that amount teaches you proper portion control and makes it normal. Also after living on protein shakes and water for weeks, the simplest foods taste delicious. Baked fish is suddenly a feast, veggies a delight. Going without and slowly introducing healthy foods resets your attitude about food, but you have to let it happen and work with your program not against it. A lot of people advance their stages or eat slider foods because they are easier to eat and they miss this mental reset. You get a one time shot at the easy mental reset post-op. If you miss it then you have to try and retrain yourself later on, on your own and it is just as hard as doing it pre-op. People that regain usually reintroduce carbs early and/or think they can eat how they did prior to surgery just in smaller portions. The one person I know personally that had surgery 5 years ago, never hit goal and has regained half their loss (They are a bypass patient). Never changed eating habits. Ate the same way just smaller portions, and then followed fad diets. Never learned nutrition, never tracked food. Now they have regained and are a loss on how to lose it. They can eat normal portions of food. Their tool offer a them no help and they haven't learned any lessons. Hopefully you are having surgery at a center of excellence. I was given a book and several handouts on how to eat and live for the rest of my life. I don't eat everything they allow because they have far too many carbs on the list for a former diabetic like me, but I followed my food stages. I follow the portions and I still look at my book for guidance. Picking a good program and a good surgeon is another key to success.
  25. I don't like the user interface of MFP at all. It's way more complicated than it needs to be. I used to use Samsung app until they canceled it as it was much easier to use. Needs to be tablet friendly please. All of the previous suggestions were good ones. Being able to enter a recipe would be helpful, so it could calculate your ingredients for you.
