Blue cross blue shield federal basic (live in tx)
falcon66 replied to creed2474's topic in Insurance & Financing
Creed, I just got approved yesterday with BCBS of Texas (TRS). I had to do the 6 month supervised diet, I finished my last appointment last Monday the 20th. The office submitted it on the 20th and I was approved yesterday the 27th. I am scheduled for my band on November 17th. Not a particular painful process it just took the 6 months. I am 38 years old and 275 lb. and have a BMI of 41 and have sleep apnea. Hope that helps. -
This afternoon I got a call from surgeon's office letting me know that all surgeries for tomorrow have been cancelled due to a death in the immediate family of the Proctor coming in to work with surgeons. They are changing over to the new type of band with inflatable sections/balloons and need to learn from a Proctor. So, they reset me for 12/15. I am disappointed as emotionally and logistically I was all set and things arranged at work, home, etc. Of course, I am sorry for his family and their loss. I just finished the two week diet and drank this horrible drink this afternoon to clean me out, I guess I will just continue the prep diet until the 15th. I am down 13 pounds and maybe it will afford me the chance to lose more before the surgery. Like Pollyanna, I am trying to think of something to be glad about...still trying... okay I will move on now. I am bummed. So, now Ryan, I guess I am not a November Band sister to you, unless our Mom was in a very long labor ...like 2 weeks. HA. Best wishes to all. Happy December!!!!

Tell me the problems are worth it
WASaBubbleButt replied to bandofhope's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my band removed over a month ago and switched to a sleeve. I agree with Starrgirrl in that I was led to believe complications were lower than they actually are. If I had it to do over again (and I did <g>) I'd go with a sleeve. Better and faster weight loss and fewest complications of DS, bypass, sleeves, and bands. -
So tired. Five days in and I have to admit I'm getting bored. Everything is just dandy as far as healing process goes. I took the dressings off of my incisions yesterday and they hardly tickle, to be honest I forget they're there. My stomach still feels a little inflated but it's not uncomfortable. I can drink (water, coffee, hot chocolate/cacao) and eat, (soup, yoghurt, purée, very smooth porridge) freely. That said I don't really want to. My appetite is minimal, which I'm relaxed about, and the only tastes (rather than foods) I do crave are savoury. Unsurprisingly I would be willing to sell my soul for a slice of hot buttered toast. I don't feel any great sensation of restriction in my stomach, my surgeon called to check-in yesterday and he tells me that's fine - it will come later with more solid food. That said I probably had too much soup too fast earlier and very quickly found myself belching. A couple of minutes later I'm fine. The thing I'm noticing most is pure and simple fatigue. Yesterday it was that aching twitchy tiredness then I had my first proper night's sleep. Today I still feel a bit limp and tired but it's qualitatively different, sleepiness rather than muscle ache.

I had my bypass done 9/5 and was wondering when most of you all got cleared to workout? I would like to start hitting the treadmill and light weights to help with my weight loss. Thanks Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app

Having a bit of a laugh - but not at your expense - but there is so little sun in Vancouver these days that is feels like November. Driving me nuts! Fish oil .. I never thought of that. I was an avid fish oil consumer for 20 years but stopped a couple of months ago because of the surgery. I have a liquid form that I haven't tried yet but maybe I will give it a shot. I had planned to go back to it anyway so I may do it sooner rather than later. I never equated this oil with energy but there must be something to it as the fat works synergistically with your body.

Well where do i start..im so sad and disappointed! I 'm scheduled for lapband on June 30th but I might be cancelling it today. Yesterday I went for an EGD and the doc told me I have a very large hiatal hernia and he does not recomend going ahead with the surgery because of future possible complications (erotion, heart burn, removal etc.) He said he recomends me to have gastric bypass and that is a definate no!! I want to go ahead and do the lap band but then again is it worth all the pain in the future...I feel like I am mourning today because I was suppose to go for my pre-op Wednesday and start my pre-op diet Thursday. I was so prepared for this...especially mentally and now don't know how to feel....other than i'm going to be fat forever!! Have any of you been thru this? I need some advise..would you go ahead or just forget all the hard work I have put into this!

There are so many people who have had gastric bypass and gained their weight back. The gastric bypass stomach stretches out and the malabsorption of calories does not last forever. I know a lot of people who have gastric bypass who wish they could get the sleeve now. There are plenty of people who have gotten down to goal weight with the sleeve as a stand alone procedure but you could always revise to a DS like the above poster suggested.

Gallbladder Stones Prevention
Bufflehead replied to Ruby11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found a study from the American Journal of Surgery, Sugerman et al., Jan. 1995 pp. 91-97 that looked at gallstone formation after gastric bypass (sleeve wasn't done much for weight loss then). Patients who received no actigall developed post-op gallstones 36% of the time while patients who received 600 mg of actigall only developed gallstones 2% of the time. This study was done for 6 months after surgery -- patients received the actigall (or no actigall) for six months post op then were evaluated for gallstones by sonography. Some of the patients of course had their gallbladders removed due to stones during those 6 months and they were counted in the "gallstones formation" percentages. This study was done using the generic medication Ursodiol but that is the same thing as the brand name Actigall. -

too many long term complications with the bypass. I work as a nurse in an large urban emergency room and see ALL the complications... from erosion of the esophagus from the lapband and slippage to intestinal blockages and ended up with the colostomy bag with the bypass. I have only seen ONE complication (except dehydration) from the sleeve which was a post surgical abscess. Hands down the sleeve was for me !!!

Yay!! [emoji2] My mother doesn't understand the that my life is at risk mpre than the surgery. They have to be in our shoes to understand. Honestly, I only seen the Nutritionist once and that was in November. I called him in January to see when the next appointment will be and he said we are done and I had to wait for him to fax the papers to the surgeon in February. He did just that. -
My dear hubby and I have been married for nearly 20 years, and he is my EVERYTHING! He had band-to-sleeve revision in mid-November 2013. His goal is to lose 100 lbs. In the eight weeks following surgery, he lost 55 lbs. But in the past 3 weeks, the scale is not moving. I tell him all the time how great he is doing, but I can tell he is starting to get discouraged. I'm not sure how to best support him during the inevitable 'stalls'. I figure this group can give me the best advice - - so.... what do you recommend?

I was hoping my insurance would pay. If I had to pay for a trip to mexico from the east coast I mind as well pay in country. My sister had bypass and I do billing for bariatric surgeons so I am aware of the complications. I am scheduled for the seminar tomorrow. I hope I have a better idea what i want tomorrow.

It might be beneficial to you to locate an informational seminar in your area and attend. Due to your neurological issues you would likely still need to have a consult with a bariatric surgeon but WLS would help you to lose weight with minimal exercise. It would just be a question as to whether or not your condition makes you a good candidate for surgery. As to the decision for bypass vs sleeve, currently the sleeve is so popular that for many it's just a matter of preference. For me I didn't want to reroute my internal organs and I was not thrilled at the idea of dumping syndrome. I also had not issues with heartburn or reflux prior to surgery so the sleeve was a better fit for me. I don't think one is better than the other. A good friend of mine had bypass. She is doing well and is very pleased with her results. She was even one of the lucky few to not have issues with loose skin.

I'm 60 and had gastric bypass on Apr-13-2016. You are never too old and we certainly had to go through many tests to get approved for procedure. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

LAP BAND is the ONLY way to go! My mom just had a bypass, and is having a hell of a time. She is loosing weight, but also her hair! She hs also has had a stricture. Her friend just had a bypass this week and is havingv trouble as well. The bypass has alot of downsides. Research them both! GOOD LUCK! -

Gday Dr C, You should go to www.youtube.com and check out all the anti band/pro mini gastric bypass videos produced by a Dr Rutledge. He is really down on the band. Just put ''mini gastric bypass'' into the search feature there. Susannah -
Anyone afraid that they are ugly thin?
ladybug3 replied to KarenG.'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think I'll look better (although with more wrinkles and lots of saggy skin!), but when my mom had her gastric bypass, it was really weird. At 53 she had virtually no wrinkles, but she was 150 lbs overweight! Now that she's about 130 lbs, she's had a couple of face lifts and other various plastic surgeries to get rid of wrinkles. It's not that she's vain, but that instead of always looking younger than her age, she looked older! The really funny part of it to me is that people always asked me if I even recognized my mom since she'd lost so much weight (she was overweight for most of my life, expect for short times when any given diet was successful). The truth is that now when I look at pictures from when she was heavy, that's who I don't recognize! To me, how she looks now is how I always saw her, even when it wasn't how she really looked. I think that looking and being healthy (and then dressing the part!) always looks better than being overweight. -

Margi, Whatever you decide I would avoid the mini bypass, it is not an accpeted standard for surgical weight loss. Good luck on your journey! Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Marissa you are so not alone in this!!! I am a nervous wreck over here. I have had all my tests, insurance paid for most of everything so far (with the exception of $30) I just found out I have sleep apnea so Tuesday I have to go get fitted for that lovely headress..lol. I won't know if insurane approves me -oh and by the way my husbands insurance does cover lap banding---I won't know until I am scheduled and the doc gives insurance the whole package to see if they will cover it. I am told that even though insurance covers it, they may not cover every single person for various reasons!! OMG shoot me now! This has been so crazy that I have only been able to eat one meal a day --not even snacks---and I have lost 6 lbs in the last week and a half! But if we do get denied, we can just appeal it to our insurance ( a friend of mine told me this) eventually they will get sick of hearing from you and hopefully cover the procedure. I have mentioned this on another thread and someone mentioned to me that if I look around I will notice that most people on LBT pay for their own procedure. I am in NJ and I have met many people that have banding or gastric bypass done (my sis is one) and none of them have had to pay out of pocket!!!! While I am crosssing my fingers for myself, I'll be crossing them for you too Marissa!!!!

First visit with my surgeon yesterday, confused...
RestlessMonkey replied to Determined Deb's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
May I say something else? If any of you think your surgeon recommends a surgery based solely on COST, CHANGE SURGEONS! Seriously. You aren't buying a car or an ipod. You are getting a medical device implanted and will need good reliable follow up care for years to come. If you think (whether it is true or not) that your surgeon is motivated by the bottom line more than what is good and healthy for you, SWITCH! While docs need income, as do we all, one should NEVER suggest a procedure based solely on income in his/her pocket. If they tell you bypass would be better, ask WHY. Think it over. Decide, and proceed. But if you really think they just want money then good grief do NOT trust him or her with your life! You already know it isn't as important as a fat wallet.
