  1. Don't laugh. I am 12 years out. Lost a lot, had stuff happen. Gained about 45 pounds back (out of more than 150 lost) and 3 years ago decided to lose it again..... and I did. And then some. So now at 67 years old.... I have gone from a size 28 a dozen years ago, and this week decided to go shopping again because my size 14 jeans (that I was soooooo proud of just months ago) were not staying up... and I JUST BOUGHT size 12 Jeans and slacks for work. SIZE 12. DID YOU HEAR THAT ? I keep giggling. Healthy (well mostly) Happy, Active, Working, Gardening, Chicken keeping, and a FREAKING SIZE 12. Does it work ? Does it still work ? YEP it does.

    RNY surgery question

Like the original poster, I was curious what happened with the "unused" part of the stomach. The part of the stomach sectioned off is in a 24/7 fasting state. It will never see food again in it's bypassed state. As for the pouch, yes. Vitamins are critical. I took them preop and will start chewables at my 2 week mark tomorrow. As well as my soft foods phase. I won't fast my new little stomach intentionally. Following doctor's orders all the way but I can't promise I won't try it down the road if need be.
  3. Hey I had my surgery 03/28. It took mines about a week or so But I still do get random pains specially where my biggest incision is. I had to allow my body to rest and heal. I slept on my back with like 4 pillows

How soon did you travel after VSG?

I think the problem of traveling is sitting in one place for a long time. The doctors worry about blood clots. But I think 6 weeks is okay. You're just not supposed to sit around for more than 2 hours at the time I think. Also you're assuming everything goes okay with your surgery., I wish I hope it does!
  5. I know I personally would have been okay to travel by that point, but if I were you I would make sure that you're not doing anything too physically taxing. I developed an iron deficiency after surgery that absolutely took all of my energy, but I started to feel better after about 2 weeks on iron pills (so 4 weeks after surgery.) If you develop anything like that you should know by your post op appointment with your surgeon. Everyone's recovery is different, but even with the iron deficiency mine was incredibly smooth and surprisingly less painful than I had imagined (I've had colds that have made me feel worse honestly.)
  6. Hello. I had my sleeve surgery on 3/27. My incisions have healed well, but I am still experiencing really bad burning and pulling pain when bending, reaching, etc. I can't lay on my right side and laying on my left side is sometimes uncomfortable. Bending over is a no go. It's incredibly painful. So, anyone have a similar experience? I'm kind of worried something is messed up with my internal sutures. My doctor said they take 2 to 3 weeks to dissolve and here it is week 4.

    What Made You Smile Today?

One week out of gastric bypass surgery, I was a bit down. Tired, sore... so decided to watch something to lift my mood on TV. What normally would make me smile, chuckle or laugh wasn't happening. I thought. Oh no! Have I lost my sense of humor already with all of the hormonal changes happening? Shirley not Post whatever makes you happy. I'm sure many here would love to smile with you

    2 days post op help

This will likely be the surgical gas they pump into your abdominal cavity so they can better see where they are operating. It slowly rises up behind your lungs putting pressure on nerves. It escapes your body when you exhale. Very little of it is actually in your digestive system so farting & burping doesn’t really help.. It takes about a week to pass. Walk, walk, walk little & often as you physically are able. March on the spot or pump your arms up & down to get the gas moving & you breathing more deeply. Long deep breathing helps too. Heat pads can help with the discomfort.

    Food Before and After Photos

@GreenTealael will be happy to know that I finally started working on that budget blog. As such all the meals I’ve posted in the last week have been part of it. 😂 Surprise! 🎉 Spoilers though- it’s $35US average a week, not just $35 a week because I needed some sanity the first couple weeks. Anyway, the first picture is some prep work- tepache, pickled daikon, and pickled tomatoes. The second is tonight’s dinner of kimchi scrambled eggs, soy marinated eomuk and mushrooms, and some of the pickled daikon.

    Nausea

Hello, yes I feel better I have nausea at least 3 times a week . Thank You for asking. My doctor is going to set me up for them to look inside my stomach with a camera, I truly want to know what's causing it because like I told her I didn't start experiencing this until I had the surgery and it's been almost 2years now. Sometimes water makes me nausea and also the sweetners and certain smells I just can't tolerate. Girl the thought of a protein shake makes me sick. Yours sounds a lot worse and it's still very early for you I truly pray that you get better. I will let you know the outcome on my test once it's done !
  11. Hey all. I'm having RNY in a few weeks. My question is, do they ever take out the bypassed portion of the stomach and intestines or always leave them in? Why leave them if they're not used?

    New Future Begins Tomorrow

Hi All! I have been mostly quiet the past two weeks, but I wanted to give a quick update since a few of you asked. [emoji846] So far, I'm healing well (18 days post op). There is still a fair amount of pain on the left side and where the nerves were cut. It has been a rougher recovery than I expected. I've had two c-sections, and I have to say this recovery ranks up there, possibly harder. Lol. I tire pretty easily, but I'm getting around better. Still can't lay on my side to sleep for very long, but it will get there. I'm doing well with getting at least 60 grams of protein. Still struggling with fluids, getting about 48 oz. I'm trying to push that, but it seems I'm always behind. Lol. I start back to work tomorrow, and I'm worried about the fatigue and not being mentally sharp. I guess all I can do is let my manager and co-workers know upfront. I'm very fortunate to be working from home, so at least I can rest if needed. I'm down 20 lbs (10 lbs lost in pre-op, 10 lbs since surgery date). I'm very happy with that progress. Already back to onederland!! I'm a lower BMI patient and understand my results may take time. I'm still shocked by how quickly my body is changing! I feel or notice something different almost every day. I hope all of you are doing well and hanging in there! 13. Hi, I am 5 wks RNY post op. Let me start by saying I started this journey in 2009 getting a gastric band. My start weight was 275lbs, I’m 5’3. In 2014 I had a revision to a gastric sleeve because of esophageal distress. I had a hard time getting below 200LBS with both of this procedures. Once I was below 200 I hovered over 185-195. In 2019 I lost more weight and was down to 157lbs. My original goal weight was 175, hoping for 150lbs. In the fall on 2018 I stopped working due to heath issues and I didn’t apply for disability until the spring of 2019. As a result of this dramatic change I became depressed and shut in. Then the pandemic happened , I became more depressed, my weight just went through the roof. Although I still didn’t eat a lot I ate unhealthy. Durning this time you could get anything delivered to your door, I got up to 235lbs. I also began to have severe reflux. I went to see a GI doctor who ran tests and found that my reflux was very severe and my hiatal hernia was back and bigger. I had it fixed with the band surgery in 2009. Gi recommendation was to have a revision to a RNY. I had to go through the process all over again, nutrition, psychology and pre op diet. On March 7th 2023 I had my revision surgery. The surgery went well , it was a little longer due to difficulty repairing my hiatal hernia. Post op I had urine retention, I had to go home with a Foley catheter. That lasted for 3 weeks. So my last start weight was 235lbs, SW 219; now 207lbs. I am not losing any more weight for about two weeks. I am in the mushy/soft stage. I had a hard time at first getting enough fluids in and getting my protein goals. Protein was a challenge during the next stages because I couldn’t eat or drink a lot. The last week or so I had some foods not go down well, had some vomiting. Also had a problem with either dehydration or hypoglycemia in the morning if I don’t eat or drink something early; can’t wait to 10 or 11am which I am used to. Not a great feeling. Either I am not eating enough protein/food or I need to add exercise to my journey, I did join a gym. I know my weight loss will be slower than most people due to revision but I think I am in that can’t get below 200 funk. I still want to be healthy at 170lbs. The journey continues!!

    Low On Iron

I’m in Australia & I had face to face appointments every two weeks until I reached goal then monthly appointments. When Covid hit, we had phone calls for my next 2 scheduled appointments. By then I had sort of stabilised and we left it as I could ring her whenever I needed advice or support. I haven’t had to contact her since then.

    March 23 buddies yet?

I hear you. My surgery was 3/24. I was 199.7 lbs on surgery day. 2 weeks after, I was 188.9. That was my lowest. I've been at 190.3 for the past week, and it hasn't budged AT ALL. I've had no issues with getting my minimum 80g protein and 64 oz. water. I've been diligent about eating only every 3-4 hrs as instructed. My calories have never gone over 550 and I walk at about 2.5 mph for anywhere from 30 min - 1 hour 5 days a week. Taking multivitamin with iron, B-12, calcium, and stool softener daily. I want to stay off the scale, but in my head, I'm like how long will this last?!?! Does the 3 week stall typically happen around week 3 or does it typically last for 3 weeks? Just ready to see progress again. I wish I had answers for you, but you aren't alone! Hang in there!

    Scalp itchiness - side effect?

I had a little bit of itchiness at the beginning, and also had skin, not dandruff, peeling from my scalp, I put coconut oil or castor oil in my scalp once a week and that helped.
  17. I have the same concern. My surgery was on 2/8 and I am in my 9th week. My doctor has me at 400-600 calories, and at least 5 hours a week of exercise. I'm only losing 2 lbs a week. I'm fine with losing at a slower rate. My concern is whether I will continue to lose when my calories move up to 600-800 when I am at 6 months. But I just keep telling myself to trust in the process. I am better now than I was two months ago. I trust my doctor and nutritionist to give me the information to successfully lose this weight. My job is to keep to the plan they have given me.
  18. Sleeved Dec 05/22 323lbs pre surgery and now 195lbs and still losing hoping to hit goal of 178 by end of may and switch to maintenance. Currently attend aqua fitness 2/3 days a week and walk 6-10km daily. I have never felt so good at any other time in my life, best decision I’ve ever made.

    Weight Stall

They’re are a normal & important part of your weight loss. It’s the time your body uses to take stock of the stress you’re putting it through (weight loss, reduced calories, increased activity, etc.), where you are & what your new needs are at a lower weight & resets various hormones & your metabolism to support your lower weight, etc. Best thing to do is to stick to your plan & don’t stress your body more with more changes. The stall will break when your body is ready. Some people experience longer or more frequent stalls than others. It just depends on their body & needs.
  20. Stalls are an expected & important part of your weight loss. Some people just experience fir longer periods & more regularly. They occur in reaction to the stress you’re putting your body under (weight loss, reduced calorie intake, increased activity levels, etc.). During a stall your body takes stock of your new current situation & then readjust various hormones & your metabolism to meet your new needs. Stick to your plan. Don’t stress your body more (like by going back to the liquid diet). The stall will break when your body is ready.
  21. I don't think you can stretch it out this early. Some say you can't stretch it out, some do. Shrug. I'm 7 weeks out, and I don't weigh or measure. My Dr. and nutritionist just said to pay attention to when I'm full and stop. I can eat quite a lot of soft pureed type foods, like cottage cheese, soups, or pudding. Sounds like you are right on track and doing fine! I've lost 23 lbs since surgery. A typical breakfast for me is 2 scrambled eggs and 1/2 avocado. For lunch I had 1 slice of deli turkey, 1 baby bell cheese, 2 strawberries (YAY just got cleared for fresh!) and 4 snow peas from our garden. Dinner is some chicken and roasted sweet potatoes, snack was some Sugar free pudding, and I also fit in a protein shake. Last night was baked fish and roasted cauliflower. My calories have been about 1000, which my Dr. was fine with. I was told if I'm tired to eat more protein.

    Weight Stall

stalls are a normal part of weight loss. Most of us have our first one around the three week point (but it can happen at any time within the first six weeks or so). This is only your first among probably many. When you hit them, stay off the scale for a few days and make sure you're following your plan to a "T". If you do, the stall will eventually break and you'll be on your way again. Stalls typically last 1-3 weeks.

Lbs lost in 2 week pre-op phase?

Went on pre-op diet 3/23 for 2 weeks leading up to surgery. It was an all liquid diet with the exception of 1 egg/day and 1 cottage cheese/day (low fat). I lost 9 lbs. I had also lost about 15 lbs (in addition to the 9 lbs) from my first visit on 2/1 through 3/23. I was self-pay, but my surgeon didn’t blink at all about dropping “too low”. I think my BMI at surgery was around 33.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

To all of you on your pre-op diet, great job so far and hang in there. I was you 2 weeks ago (had my surgery on 4/6). It feels like forever now, while you are in it, but surgery will be here before you know it. The first few days are hard, but I’m now on day 8 and just finished a 3 mile walk, enjoying the warm night. Everything feels easier now, despite still being in the beginning of the healing stage. Good luck to you all.

    Weight Stall

Hi Guys, Just curious on how people may have handled a weight stall? I'm five and half weeks post op, down 11kgs since surgery and i've not moved on the scales in the past week. I have gone back to work (retail) and have moved onto the minced/slow cooked foods part of my diet so i'm hoping this maybe playing a part it's just playing on my mind a bit. Has anyone got any tips to help getting refocused at all
