Day 95: Possibly fat forever?
Rev Me Up! replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great post! Couldn't agree with you more. After going through the lap-band roller coaster, I was so happy to find that I am able to eat whatever I want after having the sleeve for a few months. The awesome thing is, I crave healthier food in general. When I feel weird, I eat some chicken and I feel better. I carry string cheese and Peanut Butter filled pretzels in my purse and that will get me through several HOURS of the day. I can say that I never feel hungry, but I start to feel weird if I don't eat for a few hours. Most of all, I can't compare my weight loss to a lot of people on the board because I was a lap-band revision and I don' t have as much to lose. However, I think the percentages are extremely similar for everyone. I am 4 months out and I have lost 66% of the excess weight. I am on target to lose it all in 6 to 8 months. But, if someone hears I have only lost 40 pounds in 4 months, they might think I was a slow loser. Bottom line: you are right, it all comes out in the end. I don't count carbs, but I have more of a yearning for healhty food. I eat a lot of cheese, I have developed a weird craving for Starbucks iced mocha lattes (which I can only handle about 1/3 of then I throw it away), I have rekindled a torrid love affair with chicken, and I eat one serving of oatmeal every day (for fiber) which I have never done before in my life. I focus on Protein first because it makes me feel better - that's it. If chocolate made me feel better, I would probably eat that first :-) Nice to hear from you and really happy you are cruising right along! -
Yes Dr. Kelly is $5500 although since I am a Lapband revision mine is $6000 and then if I get my endoscopy there its another $400. They have to do that in order to determine if this will take me one operation or two. I'm praying one so I don't have to pay another $5500! Nursemichele613, we'll be flying in from Washinton State. Oh good, to know someone here will be same day! We have to keep in touch, ok? This forum is great.

No regrets here either. I am just 2 months post op though. ladiesassie- Have you considered revising to the DS? I know sometimes the DS is performed in two procedures, the sleeve being the first part.

Wrapping My Mind Around The Two-Surgery Thing...
iwannabslim replied to cookies's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hope that they are able to do it in one surgery with no complications. I know that dealing with two surgeries would be stressful AND very expensive. Hopefully the damage won't be very extensive. As for the recovery after the band removal, I don't know. I have known only a couple of people that had their bands out without getting a revision, but they didn't really talk about anything special as far as the diet. I'm sorry that I couldn't help with that part. Good luck and many prayers for you with your surgery. -
Hi Jonathan, I too am sorry about your situation and certainly don't consider you a failure. If I were in your situation I would be looking at other weight loss options too. As it is I am anxious about my own condition being a Lopez patient and the current stats regarding his erosion rates on LBT. I go in and meet the gastroenterologists in a couple of weeks and hopefully get my endoscopy from there. Either that will relieve my poor mind (considering I feel fine) or it will confirm my dreads. If erosion is my case, I most certainly am going to push for a revision as well. I doubt my insurance would cover the revision but hopefully if it is done at the same time as the removal they would pick up most of the tab. I have no idea. Anyway want to wish you the best and want to hear how it all turns out. Best wishes, Teresa

Geezer is UNbanded, switched and camping...
Dody replied to GeezerSue's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
As I retired nurse I have heard a lot about duodenal switch being done in European countries for years before it was done here. It is much, much safer as it doesn't mess with the intestinies, but still is major surgery. Sue, if you had the choice at the beginning would you have chose DS over the band. I can see that the DS revision is not going to require the constant and unending fills and work that the band does, so in your honest opinion what would you have chosen, and did your esophageal problems exsist before banding or did it come along with the banding and continue to get worse. I've heart this to be true with lots of people. They never had esophageal problems before. I'm so glad you switched over and are doing well. I think Gastric Bypass will become a thing of the past with DS on the horizon. Best of everything to you. Sounds like you have been through a lot. Hugs Dody -
I'm still trying to decide what to do about my band. It appears that I have three options: 1) Have the band removed 2) Have the band removed and at the same time revise to RNY 3) Have the band removed and a VG put in. The hope of option #3 would be that the VG would be the right band for me and wouldn't slip. There is a chance that they couldn't put a VG in right away, and I'll end up bandless for a few months anyway while my "innards" heal. Of course, I'm not exactly thrilled at the idea of getting a new band when I've had so many problems with this one, so this isn't my top option. I've thought long and hard about option #2, but to be honest, I think I've eliminated it. The statistics scare me. Although they vary, one that I've read a few times is that 90% of RNY patients gain back 50% of the weight they lose after 2 years. I can't imagine going through all that to lose 100 lbs, then gain 50 of it back. That leaves option #1 -- have the band removed, and try, again, to figure out how to do this on my own. I'm not sure why I'm posting this, there's really nothing anyone can do or say, but sometimes it's good just to get it down on "paper". =) Jonathan

Everyone who had band removed??Insurance??
GeezerSue replied to athykay's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You know, I don't know WHAT--if anything--my doctor submitted to my insurance for the band removal part of the surgery. He DID submit for the DS and they paid him. His "program fee" (that's out of pocket for me) is $1000 more for revisions...maybe that's where he makes up the difference. -
Here we go again. After a reasonable day, he's off to crazy town again. Wish they would cancel that express bus..lol My lawyer sent me a sample parenting plan, which husband and I had already discussed and mostly agreed on. I tried to be cooperative & took my revisions up to him and he was going along ok then suddenly exploded at this paragraph (in summary): If one parent has to go out of town or be away overnight during their week, the other parent will be contacted first to pick up our daughter and keep her with them during the other parent's absence. The other parent will keep the child until their return or their week starts. If the other parent then agrees or chooses, the child may be placed with a grandparent or trusted family member/friend instead. What I mean by this is that if he has to go out of town for work or whatever and it falls on his week, I will have our daughter, rather than say his mother, another relative or (down the road) a girlfriend. That I as her mother (and vice versa in all of this) have priority over anyone else. He somehow took this as me having a problem with our daughter staying with his mother - which I don't she is simply not her mother and his mom lives about 45 minutes away from us. I tried explaining this but he won't listen to me. He then said we'd have to go to court over this, as he wouldn't agree to it now. I DON"T GET HIM!!! ARGH!!!!! Anyone see a problem with this? Any ideas on what I can do differently? Any peeks into the workings of a crazy man? As always help & support deeply appreciated. Here we go again, another weekend in hell. Boy, I remember a time when I looked forwar to the wekend. I am actually thankful for this outburst as it reminds me that this kind of behavior is why I'm divorcing him, he's unstable and tries to make everything my fault. ps - things rough at work too...I feel like there is almost nowhere I can go to be free.

@@lovemyself Good luck! Glad you researched and came to a decision. I just had the sleeve (revision from band) on 5-25 and feel good. I'm very glad that I took action. Keep in touch.

Keto and the Gastric Bypass w/gall bladder removal
biginjapan replied to Lynda486's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think for the most part, the diet we follow post-surgery (whether sleeve or bypass) is what is known as protein-prioritized keto (there's a FB group if you are interested). Keep protein high, fats low to moderate, and carbs low. In fact, I really don't understand the (traditional keto) focus on high fat since the reason most people lose weight is because of low carbs. And of course protein is better for you than fat. That said, some people may be more sensitive to fatty foods after bypass (I just had a bypass revision myself and this is something I'm concerned about). I would talk to your doctor/nutritionist to see what they think. -

Slower weight loss after revision?
GG'sArtsMom replied to anappleaday's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision in May and am down 83lbs (102 total). I think that is pretty damn good! Granted, I am trying very hard, but my point is that I am a successful revision. I know soccermama has had a revision as well and is doing amazing. -
Biggest change or challenge from band to sleeve ?
NeedaBreak4Me replied to iamjohnbamber's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi... i hope you are recovering well. I was revised from band to sleeve... and the difference is like night and day. When i had my band removed i did have a "phantom" band for a few weeks... but once that subsided my tummy was like my pre band tummy... normal. Now that i am sleeved and healed... it just feels like a normal stomach... i can eat and drink without feeling odd sensations, pressure or food getting stuck like the band. Earlier out when i was healing, if i ate too fast or didn't chew properly i would get a little "stuck" feeling.... but nothing like the stuck feeling with the band... sort of like.. stuck without that heavy pressure. For me, once i passed the first 3-4 weeks... everything just became easier.... now i feel like a normal person, who just eats smaller portions.. Water isn't a issue and i am meeting or exceeding my daily goals. One thing i will mention... as an ex bander... you will find you can fit a little more food/fluids than virgin sleevers... as we have less sensation in our esophagus because of the band.... so its important that we measure out food until we can adjust to reading the full signals... -

6 days into 10 day liquid diet and I'm DYING
critterlady replied to petuniap's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can certainly relate to your pain! I am a month post op and am eating soft foods. I have messed up a couple of times, but I haven't "cheated" big because of fear; I am so scared I'm going to mess up my band that it keeps me honest (mostly!) I really hated the liquids phase because, not only was I mentally "hungry", I was physically STARVING. Those liquids just did not stick around long enough. But I managed, purely because I didn't want any complications; I was self pay and couldn't afford revision. I still worry that I'm eating too much; the hunger and satisfied signals are more subtle now, but I'm doing my best. YOU CAN DO IT!!!! sara -
I am scheduled for Dec 9th. I'm so excited to finally get this started. I had Lapband Jan 2009. I lost almost 90 pounds then had a slip and revision surgery in May 2010. Then I started having problems again and had it removed in March 2012. I've since gained all the weight back that I previously lost (that has been pretty devastating!). I can't wait to get on the losing track again.

Heartbroken... feels like my progress is being erased.
The Candidate replied to NYC1992's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Anyone out there who carries the slightest belief that weight loss surgery (of any type) is the "easy" way out should have to read your story. I'm a RNY and so have no experience with the band so I can't offer you any more then my sincerest wish that you are able to get a revision some day. My heart truly goes out for you. -
February Surgery ?
bikerchick519 replied to PSquared_vsg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm Feb 3rd. I'm getting a revision from mini gastric bypass to full bypass to fix acid reflux. I only have a 3 day liquid diet, first 2 days are full liquids and 3rd day is clear liquids. I'm going back to Mexico because insurance won't pay for the revision. They said the acid reflux is a complication of my prior wls which is so not true! but whatever insurance does whatever it wants. -
4 weeks out, but barely any weight loss in the last 2 weeks.... !?!?
sherrypep replied to NickiTriesAgain's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only have to do liquids for two weeks and this week which is my second week I can do whole liquid like yogurt and stuff. So I don't think you starting softs after two weeks is bad, since that's what I will be doing as per my Dr. I no that when I weigh myself I get really depresses so I try to do it only once a week which is killer. I had my revision on May 6th and actually gained 8 pounds of fluid I guess. I was so depressed because I am not eating and still gained weight. Today I finally went back to my post op weight minus 2 pounds. It will come off just stop stressing, with the band some weeks I lost a lot, some weeks I lost a little, and some weeks nothing. -
For me I could not lose all of it on my own my highest weight was 480 I got town to 430 on my own . Could not get past 430. Every time I did I shot back up to 430 . I got tired of going up and down with my weight .i use to weigh 220 . I was hit head on in 91 and shot up to 484 fast . So getting in the gym was very hard to do . I chose the lap band first mainly cause insurance , and it went good . I lost 100 pounds on it but it was slipping and well the removed it in 3 months of putting it in . They put it back in cause I was scared of the by pass but I did not lose any weight after they stuck it back and it was slipping agin . So I went in to see dr suh and we revised it to the sleeve I am just 3 weeks out I had surg on may 30 I have lost close to 30 pounds so far . I seem to be constipated but I don't eat much . I had bad heart burn a week after surg and I had to end up mixing the Pepcid with nexium twice a day and it seems to work . Other then that I am not hungry . I just start cardio at the gym a week ago . But I am excited I was scared but I was getting to the point where I was walking worse everything was getting harder to do . And I just got tired I can do it on my own and keep it off . I think this is a great tool to get you down so you can maintain and feel better it takes work .. The surg is not a walk in the park but it was worth it for me . I am trying to get to 220 back where I was and hope I will keep it off with the new life style I am moving into .

About two years after being banded, I had a panniculectomy with rectus muscle repair. I had a complication (one of those resistant infections--had to be readmitted and on IV antibiotics for about ten days), but I was MO at the time and the supervising surgeon told me that the complication rate for that surgery on an MO patient is 100%. A year later, still MO, I had a breast reduction and he tweaked the panniculectomy a little to remove dog ears. My "wisdom" such as it is, is that the belly probably could have waited, had I been in search of perfection. What I went for at the time was relief from that hangy thing. But I'm glad I didn't wait for the boobs. It is NOT a painful surgery and the recovery goes pretty fast (all things considered) and I think I can get by with what I have even when I lose more weight. Also, I went to our daughter's (she wore a 36-J bra) PS for the boobs and the panniculectomy revision. I told him I didn't want to look like Paris Hilton, I wanted a more Rubenesque shape. He "got" that and had no problem doing the surgery on someone who was not at any "goal" weight. Good luck with this!

Before the surgery
James Marusek replied to ojosbrillantez's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had severe acid reflux prior to surgery, so I had gastric bypass because sleeve will only make the condition worse. Many on this site had sleeve only to have it revised to gastric bypass because of problems with GERD after they were sleeved.
