6 months post sleeve and need help!
joatsaint replied to Kimberlee1383837812's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm right there with ya. I go through the same thing about once a month or 6 weeks. I'll just bounce up and down 1 or 2 lbs for about 10 days before the weight starts creeping down again. I just stick with my exercise and diet. It worked before the stall and if I stick with it, it will work again. -
I was banded on 10/3 and lost quickly right after surgery. I just had my second fill on 12/13 and each time I feel restriction for a few days and then somewhat back to the way I felt before the fill. I have just decided if I want to see weight loss I have to act as if the band is working for me. I have been working through the hunger and getting results. My trick .... protein protein protein. It helps to get full faster and stay full longer.

2 weeks out and I'm stall already
Babbs replied to 100lbgoal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A "stall" a few weeks after surgery is not uncommon, and here's why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs. of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when a patient is not getting in enough food, the body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. Then when 2 lbs. of glycogen is used a patient will also lose 8 lbs. of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs. that most people lose in the first week of a diet. However, when the body stays in a caloric deficit state the body starts to realize that this is not a short-term problem. Then the body starts mobilizing fat from adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But the body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. As it puts back the 2 lbs. of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs. of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though the patient might still be losing energy content to their body, the weight will not go down or it might even gain for a while as the retention of water dissolves the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. What You Can Do About a Stall or Plateau If a patient is experiencing a post-op weight loss stall or plateau further out there are a few possible causes. First, check that are you really in a stall. If the scale has stopped moving you may be losing inches, so check your measurements. -
I had surgery in Mexico. In theory, I follow up online or by phone but I'm not good at that and it is just as easy to use my local doctor. My primary doctor is the one I see at 10 days post surgery and every 3 months to run vitamin levels and labs. That's all I need. My Mexico doctor and nutritionist sent home the post-op diet and I just follow it and email or call with questions. Plus there is loads of info online to help. I don't know why I would need to follow up with a bariatric doc here in the states unless there was a complication my primary doc couldn't handle. Hopefully, that won't happen!

I had my surgery on gastric sleev on 11/11 , I was 7 ibs up when I got home on 11/12... I lost the 7, but I'm only 2 ibs down from day of surgery... it's so disappointing esp when you hear people loose 10 ibs or more their first week! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Dont want to be disappointed...advice?

Yep. You are comparing yourself to others. While we all have similar experience, we all experience it differently. Keep your head up. I only lost 10 my first week, but I've lost almost 160 since April this year. We're all different, comparing is not fair to yourself. Enjoy your own journey. -
Total cost was about $12,500. My stress test was covered by insurance, I just had a $10 copay. My psych evaluation was $150. The nutrition seminar was $30.

And finally after staying home all day because I didn't want to miss the delivery man , UPS showed up at 6 pm, after I stayed home all day. Today was 10% off for senior citizens at my favorite meat market, now I missed it. Drat them, they only sent a partial shipment, so after I return from blood draw, I'll be waiting again. Be nice if they would show up during daylight hours, my back step doesn't have a light, another thing to mention to my landlord or son, maybe mention it with my. January rent?

How To Bring Lap Up To My Doctor?
twi replied to apelt001's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Daisychains FYI. Proving you can loose wt can cause your insurance to deny you. The dr has write that you have failed all other attempts to lose wt. the time to prove your dr wrong is after you get the band. Remember some people have been denied because they were loosening good without the band. I went up and down during the the 6 month dr supervised time only loosing 10 lbs showing I was motivated but still needed help. they set you up you need to fail so you can get the band -

Congrats Mommyof4 - I'm right there with you!! I had surgery a couple of days after you did. A size 8 has been my goal all along, not really a certain weight. I just bought an only slightly snug pair of white capris two days ago for next spring. I can't imagine that I'll be any smaller than an 8!! My size 10's are 'big' after a day and I need to wash them, but at age 51, I think the 8 is too tight.....ten years ago, I'd have worn them NOW!!! I am having so much fun buying clothes. I hated shopping before, it's been years since I enjoyed buying clothes for myself. I'm sure you feel the same!!! I've given away 7 trash bags full of clothes!! I can't wear anything from 'before'. It is so strange, but a good strange. It's still hard to get use to not going to the "womens" dept. Anyway.....have fun and again, congratulations on the itty bitty size!!!!

I Am 3 Weeks Post-Op With Vertical Sleeve And So Excited!
DisneyMom4419 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my surgery on Feb. 8th 2012 and had a starting weight pre-surgery was 315 I lost down to (it was my doctors requirements that your lose between 10 - 15lbs before surgery) the day of surgery I weighted in at 299 and today I am down to 282. I had my surgery at Pikeville Hospital in Pikeville Ky and my doctor is Amy Johnson, and I could not be happier with the care I received from both. I have not had any complications, however I have followed the diet my doctor gave me. I am 32 years old and have been overweight for most of my life. My parents put me on my first diet when I was in the 3rd grade and I was up and down since then. But after I met my husband (and got comfortable in the relationship) my weight began to creep out of control, I told him he must have feed me to well (we would eat out alot). I was always able to starve myself and get my weight down to what I thougt was manageable, but July 2 years ago I had a complete hysterectomy and from then on I have not been able to lose. So after I tried to ride the swings at an amusement park and would not fit I decided it was time to do something. I have 2 girls ages 8 and 6 who keep me on my toes and I have always been active even as a large girl, but it was a real eye opener when that happened. So I am so excited to be on my journey! How do you get the weight ticker? -
October 10 is the first day if the rest of my life!!! Super excited!!! Can't wait to be sleeved!!!

Ate too much 1 week post op.
jms462001 replied to Bandnerd's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your hair should not be thinning. Make sure you are getting lots of protein. Drink protein shakes and add Peanut Butter, whatever you have to in order to get them down plus the PB adds some oils which are important to keep your hair. I ate peanut butter throughout and never lost any hair. Also make sure you take Biotin along with your multi and B-complex. You are going to be hungry until you heal and get a fill. You probably won't be able to eat that toast once you get a fill. In the meantime, try to focus on protein foods like eggs, tuna, chicken salad as they keep you full and are what your body need for healing. Stay away from bread and other carbs if you can. I ate Cookies a couple times before my first fill (quite a few!!) so I know how it is! 10 pounds is great really!! -

I had surgery on March 10, 2014. I have lost 17 pounds since I started this journey. Part of which was from the liquid diet before the surgery. I can feel restriction, so I don't think I'm overeating, but I've been at a the same weight for a month now. I am very discouraged. I walked two miles yesterday. i just don't get it. i have not got this figured out yet. i had this surgery so I would not have to worry about dieting any longer, yet here I am worrying again about food! I will take any advice offered. Thanks, Mississippi Girl

Wow! So you just lived one of my dreams. Congratulations on your progress! I have walked by that store so many times for so many years hoping I would one day be able to purchase bras and panties from there. I am still not quite there but I am not too far off. I am however able to purchase some clothes from normal stores and am close to moving down another size here in the next 5/10 lbs. I cannot wait to cut up my Layne Bryant card. I think there will be a huge celebration at my house. I have had to replace all my shoes because I now take a medium width! I love shoe shopping! By the way, I have always hated shopping, now I look forward to trying on clothes! Congratulations again on your great success and thanks for sharing your wins! I guess I will live vicariously through you until I lose the next couple of sizes.

My bariatric doctor shared it is easy for people post bariatric surgery to trade a food addiction for another unhealthy addiction such as too much alcohol, smoking, overdoing exercise, etc. I suggest you ask yourself why you are smoking and what benefit are you getting and why smoking versus other productive activities. Stop eating when full?
FluffyChix replied to JitterbugPerfume's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
^^^This! Great post @allwet. It's super stressful, the "not knowing," and trying to navigate a new road. The surgical team tries as best they can to prepare us, but the reality is that it's like bringing home a new baby from the hospital. We will be anxious and fretful 1st time parents to our new babies. I was TERRIFIED of overeating and ruining the tool I was given. My new pouch wasn't giving me feedback to let me know when I was full. So I never knew how much latitude to give myself. So I actually did the opposite of you. I ate my scheduled 5-6 mini meals per day and got my protein in come hell or high water. But I ate very small quantities and calories for my stage in order not to stretch my pouch. Consequently, I never challenged it or felt full--so I thought my surgery was screwed up cuz I never got full. LOL. Then one day I let myself eat all I wanted. Low and behold, I was only about 2-3bites below the "OK, 'enough moron' stage." I got my vitamins in each day and got my 120oz of liquids! Every day. I ate on a schedule whether I was hungry or not, cuz it was the only way to get my protein in and make as much of it protein from food, rather than protein supplements. Retrospectively, I'm not sure if that was right or wrong. You know? I could have just had 2 Premier Proteins for 320cals and been done with it! Protein req satisfied, BOOM Chahkalaka! And I would have had 22oz of liquids toward my goal. I healed easily. Many don't. Many of you guys have a LOT of swelling to deal with. So it's an individual walk and what worked for me, won't work for you. You just have to carefully feel things out. Now, fast forward to 9 almost 10 weeks and my new tummy tells me when it's full and I know approximately how big a meal should be by volume and weight. I know when I can't possibly eat another meal--so I cut out the next meal. I try to still eat on a schedule, but sometimes I don't want my snacks. So I skip them. Eventually, I will be able to eat enough volume, that I can eat 3 meals + 1 snack a day. But I'm not there yet. And that's ok. My tummy will tell me when I am! Your's will too! At the end of the day, if I haven't eaten enough to satisfy my protein minimum for the day, I will add as much Premier Protein as I have to have in order to satisfy my minimum goal. I ALWAYS satisfy my liquid reqs and my vitamin reqs and the absolute minimum protein. But now I'm doing good to work toward the middle of the protein range, which should give me more oomph to do my workouts. Just take things slowly and try to listen to the very subtle cues from your body. They will become more and more pronounced as you learn its new language! Congrats on surgery! -
Has anyone else discovered that they have no sliders? I haven't been looking for mine, and I'm glad to know I don't have any, but with everyone talking about sliders all the time I just assumed they were normal. I've tried popcorn and can only eat 2-3 handfuls before I'm full, cheetos never appealed to me pre-op let alone post-op but I assume they'd have a similar effect, I've had baked Lays and about 5-10 chips and I'm done.. Again, I'm glad that I don't appear to have any at 5mos out, I just find it odd that it seems to be so common. I guess I'm just the odd ball out?

I ate an egg...
mamaplumlee replied to 140icandoit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 10/1 and I can not eat a whole egg. I can eat maybe 1/2 and then I'm stuffed for like 12 hours shy of water. I usually get hungry in the morning and near bedtime other then that I graze. -
Time To Introduce Myself
kespy74 replied to iluvmyArmani's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congratulations and Good Luck!! Keep us posted. There are so many awesome people in this forum. It really is like a family that understands what you are going through. I am 5' 2.5" and weigh between 230 and 226 on any given day. I also hate looking at myself in the mirror and feel so embarrased that I got this big. I even asked my hubby of 19 years if he still found me desirable since I gained 100 pounds during the course of our marriage. I was so scared to hear the answer, but he reminded me why I love him so much. He said he loves me and I am as desirable as ever because he knows the person I am. Such a great guy!! I was hoping to get surgery before the end of the year, but I still have to go through all my clearances. I go to my PCM on the 19th for the referrals and hopefully I can get in sooner rather than later. January/February is probably more realistic. As long as I can get it before my 40th birthday.
