How much does it cost to have the band removed?
momof4 replied to corinnel's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Heather, I know that he has converted several lapband patients--all needed to lose different amounts of weight. I do know of one patient that he performed the MGB on and she only needed to lose 20 lbs. or so, I'm not sure of the whole story, but that 20 lbs. was life threatening to her. He performed the surgery and only bypassed 1 foot on her. I had 3 feet bypassed, but the norm is 6 feet. I know of him performing 8 feet for the severely obese patients too. Normally, he won't perform surgery on anybody under 30 or 35 BMI. He is more willing to consider you for his surgery if you are a lapband conversion, no matter how much you need to lose. He knows of the failure rate of the lapband and the discouraging and helpless feelings it leaves in people. He is very sympathetic and his staff is excellent too. Beware of the packet though. It's quite complicated. Go to clos.net and scroll to the bottom. Join the mailing list, which is actually his message board and you can read and interact with hundreds of people there. You do not have to be a patient to join. You do have to sign up for yahoo though. Dr. Rutledge and the other CLOS doctors are on those boards too in case you want to ask them direct questions. Also, if you call Dr. Rutledge's private cell phone number, he does answer. I called him at 7:30 on a Thursday night and he answered all my questions. Good luck to you. Alex - Thanks for the good wishes. I know I will succeed with this. The best thing about it is that I DON'T FEEL HUNGRY. I never would have believed it, but it's true. Tricia -
How much does it cost to have the band removed?
GeezerSue replied to corinnel's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hey, guys! Corinne was sent over here from OH because there are no OH boards specifically for band problems. (i may have sent her.) Anyway, if you have any info to share with her, that would be cool. Corinne...my band came out as part of a revision to my DS...you knew that. So the cost was all inclusive. Maybe some others can help. BTW...do yo have insurance at all? -
I consider myself to be wildly successful. My nurse tells me I'm losing like a bypass patient. I couldn't be happier. So, just for comparison, I calculated how much I lost in the 60 days after surgery (after I subtract what I lost from the pre-op diet). You know how much? 33 pounds. So you got me beat! I mean, think about it: 16 pounds a month is INSANE! Congrats on your AWESOME progress so far!

Surgery on April 5th!
pnw218 replied to SamieTeacher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My experiences are below however I did not have a revision. Could be lots differrent. 1. I know everybody is different, but how long did you stay in the hospital? I'm having surgery early Monday morning and I'm hoping I will be able to go home Monday night (my doctor says it's a possibility). I went home the same day when I had the band put in. I was in the surgery clinic overnight and in the recovery house for 2 days. Kinda different when you travel instead of staying home for surgery. To me, it was an easier surgery than my tummy tuck and was home by noon the same day. 2. How long were you on liquids after surgery? I think I'm on clears for a week. I didn't like clears. LOL I followed the sleeve diet guidelines from Cornell University. Worked good for me. 3. The week of my surgery is my spring break (I'm a middle school teacher). I will have that week to recover plus I'm taking another week off (2 weeks total). I'm constantly on my feet and moving when I'm at work...although I don't do any physical labor. Do you think 2 weeks is enough recovery time? I had surgery on Thursday, flew home on Sunday, worked 4-6 hours per day, every day the next week. I am mostly at a desk but am up and around a decent amount. I think teaching is harder, especially depending on the age group : ) 4. I've read that some people have clear Protein on after surgery when they're on the clear diet...I've bought the clear powder before (flavorless). Do you just add it to Crystal Light or something? 5. Is there anything you wish you would have brought to the hospital that you didn't? I remember after my band I was happy I brought Chap Stick...just wondering if there is any other little comforts I should think of. I was very happy to have my heating pad and gasx! My body temperature was hot and cold constantly, so the heating pad came in handy. The gasx was nice for the gas and also a 'treat' before you could have ice chips or anything else. I didn't read very much or use my laptop. I did send a few emails from my cell phone tho. Good luck with your surgery! It is coming up quickly!! -
Help please, pregnant after mini gastric bypass
Born in Missouri replied to mmy's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
Pregnancy and lactation were both incredible life-changing experiences that I treasure. I've given birth four times to four healthy children. Once you know you're pregnant, it's never too soon for your first prenatal visit. So much takes places during those early first weeks. Your vitamins sound fine, but this is really something for your obstetrician to confirm. Also, and don't be shy about asking, if s/he is knowledgeable about the special malabsorption issues associated with a bypass. You may need other medication prescribed for you during your pregnancy, so s/he'd need to know, for example, that extended-release medications no longer work for you. Azithromycin, a common antibiotic, is also out post-bypass. To make sure that you, and especially your baby, are properly nourished, be vigilant and be a strong self-advocate. Forgive my patronizing tone, but you know that what you do (or don't do) from now on, can affect that fragile precious life growing inside of you. NO PRESSURE, right? I should mention that I don't know the differences between a full gastric bypass and a mini-bypass, so I hesitate to say anymore ... other than GET THEE TO A BABY DOCTOR POSTHASTE! -
My surgery was 12/18/17. No regrets at all! I feel better every day. The only thing is, I tire out easily. I was extremely tired after a trip to the doc and nutritionist a week post op. It’s a 2 hour drive one way. Also, because I was a revision from lap band to Bypass, my surgery was 5 hrs long due to scar tissue and my surgeon took his time and didn’t rush things to get it done properly. That last was from his PA. She is impressed with his patience in surgery. That’s exactly what you want in a surgeon! I was on full liquids the first week with no issues. After my first post op, I was able to advance to soft, puréed foods. That’s working out well too. I won’t lie to you, that evening after surgery, I was sore. Obviously, my stomach hurt, it hurt to move! I had right shoulder pain from gas they put in your stomach for surgery. But the nurses I had were awesome and experienced in dealing with Bariatric patients. Even thought they came in during the night to check vital, I still got a good sleep. Felt so much better the next day. I walked, sat up on the chair for 3 hours and was able to eat jello. I saw my doctor, nutritionist and his PA all before going home. I hope this is as the information you were looking to get. My highest weight 309, I do not have my surgery day weight, thinking it was about 301. According to the doc’s office 1 week our 290! I’m happy with my results. I haven’t stepped on the scale, but plan to every Tuesday. I would be happy to answer any questions for you. Good luck on your decision.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. Many experience problems drinking protein shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce protein shakes a day, in order to meet my protein requirements. You do not have to like protein shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. I used Muscle Milk Light (Vanilla Creme) powder blended with water and a half a banana. That worked for me. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, you might try premixed Isopure. Without sufficient protein, your body will scavenge protein from other areas of your body, such as your muscles. Protein is extremely important after surgery as its job in the body is to build and maintain tissues including your body's major organs and skeletal muscles. Protein deficiency, when continued over a long period of time can cause a disease known as protein caloric malnutrition. Common symptoms are poor healing, fatigue, hair loss and muscle wasting. Immediate post op, protein promotes healing of the staple line and incisions. The fluid requirement is met by a combination. It is not only the water that you drink each day. But also the water you drink when you take your vitamins and medicine. It is the milk you drink. It is the fluids content of the protein shakes. It is the water component of the soups you take. It is met by flavored water such as Crystal Light. It is met by sugar free popsicles. It is met by tea and decaf coffee. It is a combination of all the fluids that you consume during the day.

Had lapband to rny on May 21,2014. Lost 20 and then bam I have been stalled!!! I go up and down 2 pounds for the past week. It's so frustrating, makes me think I am doing something wrong. I know it's a stall but I worry I won't lose anymore.. It's messing with my head major! I really expected to continue losing like I was. I know it's not reality though. When I was banded in 2008 I was 300 pounds lost 120 in 9 months. Had to gain some to get the revision to rny so day of surgery I was 245. Now I am 225 and stuck. I wish I had the power to not weigh daily but I am so OCD I need to know lol. Any veteran revisioners to through this at the beginning??

I am three months post op and am just getting over a stomach bug with vomiting and diarrhea. It seems I can barely eat anything now, I fill up super fast and stay full for a really long time to the point that I am eating half of what I used to. Has anyone else had this for a few days afterwards? Is it normal? Is it almost like a pouch reset because I couldn't eat for a day and a half? (I am pushing fluids, just curious about food). Update - had my 3 mo post op appt and I am doing fine. I was told it can take a few extra days to get back to normal eating compared to before I had gastric bypass.

May 11th-Lap Band Revision to a Sleeve
Brigiter replied to ette16's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm going for my revision May 5th Lapband to sleeve! I'm scared but excited!!! Wish you the best! Hopefully we will be ok and love our sleeve, the band worked phenomenal for me until December 2014 I started developing GERD, so let's sleeve up! -
You can lose as much weight with the sleeve as with bypass. Because you are a big guy, it will take time for the weight to come off and that time will help you learn new eating habits. Bypass malabsorption only lasts for 18-24 months and bypass patients who have relied on malabsorption to lose their weight are up the proverbial creek, plus they have malnutrition issues forever. There's a guy on Obesity Help who has lost 350 lbs with the sleeve. I think your surgeon gave you very good advice in recommending VSG. However, I am a strong advocate in people getting the surgery they think is right for them and if you feel that you would do better with a bypass, talk to your surgeon again.

Doctor Recommends Sleeve
Liberated Sleeve replied to alovio's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do know that you do have the option to have Bypass after you have had the Sleeve if you are not satisfied. You haven't shut the door on that option for good. -
What brand vitamins are you using? I am 4 days post op and also find it difficult to get down my huge chewable. I have been using Opurity vitamins. They are optimized for bypass and sleeve. I used to crunch them with no problem pre op but now I take tiny bits at a time, chew that little bite to dust and dissolve it with a tiny sip of water before swallowing. It's a process but worth the extra time to avoid any trace of nausea. And congrats on your progress!!!! I'm still waiting to lose all the fluids from the IVs.

I completed all of my qualifications on 5/4/16. A little over 3 weeks to be approved. I had the lapband removed on 4/25/16 and I have to wait 3 months before gastric bypass.

I have had my band since 9/23/05, I have lost 20 pounds with my band already. If you follow the bandster rules you will lose weight. There several studies out on the web where the band and the bypass or compared. Eventually a banded person will lose the same amount of weight it will just take longer. You can defeat the band, you can defeat the bypass. There are some bypass patients that are now banded over their bypass because they had started gaining their weight back. It is all in how you want to approach the band, embrace it and do the best you can to follow the rules or struggle with it...same with bypass.

I had my first experience of dumping 2 days ago. It was the worst pain and discomfort i have EVER experienced in my life!!! Im only 10 days post bypass op. I think it was because i accidentally became dehydrated (a 1 hour doc appointment turned into 3 and i didnt ask for water) Later that evening i was celebrating my husbands birthday and had 1 scoop of vanilla icecream. BIG mistake!! The ice cream into a dehydrated intestine..... Within 30 mins i was writhing in agony, sweating, shivering...just wanted to die! So if thats dumping i dont ever want to go there again...ever! I had had 1 scoop of ice cream before, as i had become hypoglycemic and my surgeon said i needed to increase a bit of sugar intake. No problems then. So i think it was in combination with dehydration. Does anyone have any tips on how they get through terrible episode of dumping if it happens??? I was just unable to do anything to help myself. It scared me to death. I dont have any appetite now because im so afraid of feeling that again. I can only bring myself to drink weak cordial because i know i can tolerate that. I have been asking myself what have i done? But i know I'll get past it. Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App

I have BCBS federal. I am trying to get a revision of gastric bypass originally done in 2004. They denied me because with the original surgery, I lost at least 50% of excess weight. My doctor did a peer to peer but still denied. Has anyone ever had this happen to them
-
All I can tell you is that bypass has a much higher incident of regain. When they cut the stomach on bypass they use a different part of the stomach. The sleeve stomach is made from a part of the stomach that is not stretchy-it's muscular. Besides that, you're looking being vigilant the rest of your life with taking Vitamins and supplements because of the malabsorption issue you have to take into account with bypass.

May 11th-Lap Band Revision to a Sleeve
ette16 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I can't believe this is really happening. I'm only a week and a half away. Somehow I have gotten lucky and only have to do a 2 day pre op diet (I was expected at least a week). Between now and then i know I'm probably going to eat an insane amount of food. But I'm ready to say goodbye to the foods that I was constantly going overboard on. I'm at peace knowing I'll never be able to eat the way I am now ever again. This is what I wanted in 2006 when I got the lap band. But somehow I've ended up almost right back where I started. My pre lap band weight was 285. I'm now at 250. 50 of those pounds, I gained in the last 6 months. Let's get this show on the road. -
Hi all! Tomorrow I will receive my surgery date. I’m excited and nervous all at once. I feel prepared in terms of knowledge - but I still have several people who love me very much expressing major concern regarding my decision to do gastric bypass surgery. As we all know, this is our decision – but hearing others who think I’m making a huge mistake – it kind of gets into my head a bit. I’m so glad I found this forum. My new peeps! I will need you greatly as I get ready for surgery!!!

So I had bypass on 8/17 I've had a pretty normal surgery, nothing wrong. Post op I was doing okay, having a little bit of trouble getting fluids in. Fast forward to this past week or so I've been feeling nauseous all the time, every time I eat I feel pain/sick afterwards. I have moderate pain on my right side (near my upper back) that comes and goes a few times a day, vomiting whenever I do eat, pain in my upper abdomen a few times a day, and my stool turned to this very pale almost white color (not to be gross lol) I'm at a loss as to what's going on with me...or is it normal? /: ❤️8/17/16

Anyone having RNY on Nov. 28th, or maybe within 2-3 weeks of that?
