Cathy, I am a type 1 diabetic and my weight loss was good at first but I've been at a stall for a while. My doctor told me that my weight loss would not be as fast because of the diabetes.

Any Diabetics Sugars Dropped Too Low?
O.T.R. sleever replied to rapf777's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My son is diabetic, while he was working in a fast food restaurant he experiences several drops in blood sugar. What we found as a good soloution is glucose tablets. They kinda look like a roll of tums & are available in several flavors in most pharmacies. -
Few choices for protein shakes for pre-op liquid diet?
BigGirlPanties replied to Scylla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used the Slim Fast pre-made stuff, low carb...it was good and filling... my dr gave me options based on the protein grams and carbs... even tho the book I got mentioned several brands that they recommend -
No one knows. Apparently, it happens sometimes. Most/many people lose their hunger after surgery, but some people are still hungry. And since I was told not to eat for more than 30 minutes and I can't eat fast or I'll be in pain, I can only eat a little bit, so I'm hungry all the time. The surgeon told me to meet with the nutritionist, but she had already told me to talk to a doctor about medication, which the surgeon didn't agree with.

Hey, there. I found BariatricPal by way of the Big Book of Roux en Y. I am currently pre-op and in the process of determining if I want to commit to this extreme change in lifestyle. My surgery date is set for July 7, pending approval of insurance and pre-ops. As of right now, I am 90% sure that I want the surgery. I have an an all-or-nothing type personality, but I'm not the type to push the envelope or take risks. When I commit to a diet and exercise, I give it my all; unfortunately, as proven by the many diets I have failed, my all isn't good enough. As far as a healthy lifestyle goes, I am either "on" or "off," but my biggest problem is that when I'm off, my eating habits are extreme - my diet consists of fast food, ice cream and pastries. I think the reason for the extreme off behavior is that I haven't found a good enough tangible reason to NOT go to extremes. "Tangible" is the key word there - yes, I may be shortening my life and yes, I may be missing out on a better quality of life, but those reasons are so hypothetical when most days I'm tired and hungry after a long day at work and I want something that is convenient and tastes good; uh, what do you know, there's McDonalds, perfect, won't even have any dishes to do! - unfortunately, at that point in time the fast tasty food is much more tangible than trying to live healthy. The surgery will give me the very tangible reason I need stop acting out on impulse desires. For me, knowing I'm going to get sick and run the risk of a rupture is much more tangible than the thought that maybe I'll live longer and maybe I'll have a better quality of life. I am a cautiously optimistic person by nature. I welcome any thoughts anyone may have about me, my reasons for the journey and/or the journey.

Of course it depends entirely on what you're used to eating - what your energy needs are. If you're 500lb and live on 6000 calories a day you can lose weight darn fast still eating what I'd call a lot of food. But for me personally to shift 20lb in a month - a Protein shake diet is the only way I can think of to do that - 1000 calories a day or less, lots of cardio and just put up with being starving hungry. Now, I'm at a low weight, so no doubt you fit somewhere in the middle there. Its certainly doable, not pleasant, but doable. However, there's no magic in Protein shakes. If you can stick to 1000 calories or less a day on real food you'll lose weight just the same. But presurgery, high protein low carb is important - it shrinks your liver and much as I dont believe in low carb diets, its the best way to lose a lot of weight fast.

I didn't even know it was sent to the insurance! As I got an email saying it was approved. It took a day! They want me to do it June 3 but that feels fast. I'm dying! I'm so happy and scared out of my mind!! This is real now. Really really real. I want to vomit.

Hi everyone I'm almost 5 weeks out I got my sleeve on 2/1 and everything's been running smooth but for the past week I throw up with any protein shake and I've been having a hard time meeting my protein and fluids goals because I'm always so nauseous. Has anyone gone through this? Also this started one day when I had puréed chicken and I'm guessing I ate too fast so I threw up, but now I throw up everyday regardless of how slow I eat I've been regressing back to even thinner puréed foods I'm supposed start incorporating regular soft foods next week but I don't feel quite ready.

Should I have the surgery?
awold0 replied to Short N Sweet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I totally understand. I thought about having the surgery 4 years ago. I also lived in CA at that time and had started the meetings with the doctors but my family said the same thing. My husband and my family thought I could do it myself if I put my mind to it etc. I decided not to have the surgery. Now fast forward to 2013. I had moved to Texas and gained almost 40 more pounds and my yo yo dieting was just so frustrating. My health had taken a huge slide. I had sleep apnea and high blood pressure . I finally hit the breaking point and started the research again and made doctor appointments. Once I started going to meetings and made up my mind for myself my family followed. They saw that I had made up my mind and I was gong to change my life. By the time I was having my surgery my family was all on board. I am now 5 months post op. I am so happy I moved forward and did the sleeve surgery. . I wish I had done it earlier in my life. I work out 5 days a week. I have lost 71 pounds and I feel so much healthier. My family is so supportive and now see's how I have changed my life and is so happy for me. You also might think about taking your mom to support groups for WLS post and pre op. I have seen many family member's go with loved ones to help them get information that helps them to understand so it is not so scary. Good Luck with what ever you decide and I wish you the best. -
Best advice
LittleLizzieLilliput replied to Hopejeung's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me? Follow the protocols. After they remove your stomach those first 3 months are first a healing nightmare and then quickly becomes so fun with losing so fast. Then our tummies really heal and people's bad habbits can come back. For me I avoid it by just focusing on my protein and water goals. But I do it by making really awesome, delicous dishes at home. I currently make (and these are all low carb, high protein meals): Chilli Tandoori chicken Butter chicken Chicken Teriyaki Maryland Crab Cakes I took the time to practice and try stuff out. If I didn't like something or it didn't go down well, I brought it into work and gave it away. I spent a good month sourcing recipes, trying them out and now I have delicious protein meals that are SOO much better than anything I'd buy on the fly. I don't even CRAVE the stuff I'm not suppose to have cause i"m just excited to eat the awesome gourmet food I made. That and walking 15 minutes at 10:00 and 3:00 as well as a half hour at lunch. Those are my absolutes. Doesn't matter where I am or what I'm doing, unless I'm on jury duty or something. I walk briskly at those time. Not a stroll, I'm out to MOVE. Finally, Stairs. I run up any flight of stairs I can. At work we have a flight of 16 steps. I do sets of UP & Down at least 3 times a day. Usually I come back from my brisk walks and end it with a set of 3 on the stairs. It doesn't really take that long. I invested the time on the front end for the recipes and now I have them down pat, can buy the ingredients with ease and throw together my meals for a whole week in a few hours. I make sure I walk 3 times a day and take advantage of the opportunities to move when they are presented. I've been fairly successful so far, I'm dropping inches consistently and then lbs are a little less predictable but our metabolism doesn't like to lose weight at this rate and will fight us from time to time. Overall this whole process is simple, but not easy. The way to make it easier on ourselves is to commit to the post surgical protocols. Good luck! I'll say this, the 1st 8 weeks were a nightmare for me, I had the VGS, Hiatal hernia repair and gallbladder removal. I hit a massive regret and depression wave around week 4 or 5. I cried my self-pitying eyes out and let myself feel all those emotions. Then I picked myself up again and haven't looked back. Nobody is gonna have a EASY time, but it will be faster and more fun if you follow the diet instructions and watch your body reveal itself to you. I am now happier than I have been in years but it wasn't a cakewalk getting here. So try to keep your head up, eyes on the prize and remember to allow yourself to feel all of your emotions and deal with the psychological stuff that comes up so you can enjoy this new life you are birthing for yourself. -
I'm approved I can't believe it went through so fast!! After 6 months of nutrition classes and another month of dealing with BS from my PCP all my paperwork was finally submitted to Cigna on Thursday afternoon. I got the call this morning that they received an approval!! My surgery date is March 16th!! YAY!! I can't wait to start my new life!!

Hard not to get discouraged when you see other people starting the process after me, and I am still waiting for approval. The 45 day limit on the appeal is fast approaching, and am still waiting for letter of medical necessity from my neurologist. What stings is that the request was sent over almost three weeks ago. Doc dictated it the next day and sent it off to be transcribed. Well I guess there was nothing in the file so the transcriptionist just moved on. No follow up. No question. No nothing. Just dumped it and moved on. So now I may miss the deadline for the appeal because they did nothing about it for three weeks. I started in July and didn't have the six month diet. I was told late September or early October and I would be sleeved. Mid October and I am still trying to get stuff submitted. Trying to keep hopes up and anxiety in check. But getting more and more discouraged every day.

So nervous I feel nauseous! LOL
dzelaya90 replied to dzelaya90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you! I am feeling pretty good right now. At first I struggled a bit I was so tired but I couldn’t sleep and it was frustrating because I felt restless but I am doing so much better now [emoji3]. Good luck with your surgery you will do just fine trust me I was nervous for no reason everything happens so fast. -
It probably slid down too fast. I've had that side effect before. Try to eat slower when something is soft or puréed.

6 Months of dieting
Lanakila replied to amanda45414's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am sending loads of good thoughts your way! I was really worried about that 6 month thing too. My insurance policy didn't come right out and say it, but my surgeon said that it's about 30% of the time that they require it. He said that it was mostly for folks with borderline low BMIs and nearly controlled co-morbidities (like pre-diabetes instead of diabetes.) I am on 5 different blood pressure meds, have sleep apnea, and a BMI of just barely under 50. They approved me without the diet thing. I also had documentation of where I had joined a hospital diet counseling program in February...so I was hoping that would have been a good backup if I needed it. I would think that if they asked for it that your doctor supervised adipex approach would be enough. I hope that the entire issue is moot and that they approve you super fast!!! -
Hi!!! I was banded on June 27th and I have your excat same question. I followed the liquid diet and mushies and all that stuff to a tee but now with solids I feel I can eat pretty much anything (still haven't tried bread or Pasta or lettuce or steak...I'm too afraid) and I feel I'm probably eating too much. I have lost 20 lbs. which is great but I'm scared I'm eating too much!! What do you normally eat? I normally have: Breakfast 2 egg white omelette with cheese and salsa; or 1 slim fast; or 1 cup oatmeal and berries lunch 1 cup soup; or 1 cup mashed potatoes and veggies; or 1 big baked sweet potatoe with sugar free syrup and light butter dinner 1 can tuna with mayo and 1 cup broccoli; or a handfull of tortilla chips and Beans and cheese; or one Soup (the whole thing even though it says 2.5 servings per can

Well the 12th is getting here really fast. I dont say much on here but could write a book with the things going through my mind. This site has been a great comfort. I am in a new place with no friends around to talk to. I have a wonderful understanding wife but she cant really relate. Its been really good for me to read the sucesses, the what to bring checklist, and even the complications just to know that if I have any of them, I wasnt alone and not in the dark about them. It doesnt take away the nerves but it has helped alot. Thank you to all that have shared the good, the bad, and the ugly and after Tuesday, I will be adding more experience to everyone looking for information. E

I guess what I mean by "fast track" is, my cousin had the sleeve surgery and her BMI was over 50. She also went through Beaumont and she did not have to do the 6 month supervised diet.....at least that is what she told me. During my process I will also be recovering from a total knee replacement. I already have my WLS appointments booked through March and will complete my 6th appointment in August. I hope to have surgery in September if that is actually how the plan goes. My insurance company or at least the lady I have communicated with has not been very helpful at all. We have Cofinity/Varipro through my husbands union. She did say it was a covered benefit if I met the criteria, which is set by a third party American Health Holdings. She however could not provide the specifics. I swear one lady works there because I have called a couple of times for information. I guess I will find out more tomorrow.

Hello Everyone! Not sure if I am posting in the right place or not. Tomorrow is my very first appointment to begin my weight loss journey. I live in the Metro Detroit area and will be going through the Beaumont Weight Control Center. I am excited and nervous at the same time. Food has been a comfort, but I need help. I think I have tried everything out there. I understand this will not be easy, but honestly I cannot continue on my current path. I will be 49 in July and I am having my 2nd knee replacement next month. I swear I have the joints of a 90 year old! I also am being treated for Psoriatic Arthritis, high blood pressure and I have been using a CPAP machine since 2019. I'm 5'4 and my current BMI is 41.7 (243lbs). Insurance wise, I do not believe I qualify to be fast track....I think my BMI needs to be over 50. I am just hoping for the best and that I can be approved. My joints are in constant pain and exercise right now with my knee is almost impossible. Has anyone ever had the 6 month supervised medical waived with a BMI under 50? Anyway, I look forward to making some new friends here and absorbing the wealth of knowledge on this forum.
