Another newbie with many, many questions!
Elisabethsew replied to ash's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome! I too had a band and was miserable with it. After 3 years and 1 day, I revised to a sleeve and got the band out. Although I followed all the rules, the band never worked for me and the acid reflux was horrible. With a sleeve, it works right away. You have no appointments to fill it and then unfill it, etc. There is no foreign device inside you squeezing your upper stomach and the weight loss is proven to be faster and in a higher percentage than with the band. Some MDs say 6 months and some use a year as a guideline for getting pregnant so ask your OB/GYN. As for recovery, the sleeve was a much easier recovery than the band was. I went back to work as an RN and did two 13 hours shifts one week post-op. -
Set my date and starting to freak out.
Des0520 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My name is Desiree and I set my surgery date for October 4th yesterday. I've been on a journey of working to lose weight for a couple of years now. It all began a few years ago when I destroyed the cartridge in my knee and had to have surgery that put me on crutches for 6 weeks and I couldn't put any kind of weight on my leg. I decided to seriously work to lose weight then and was at my heaviest which was 342. I recovered from surgery and starting working with a personal trainer and following a strict diet. I lost several inches in 3 months, but only about 20 lbs. While working with my trainer I once again tore up the same knee, only a different injury. This time it the cartilage on my femur and had a hold 2 inches in diameter torn into it. This equaled another surgery and this time 8 weeks on crutches with no weight allowed. I had considered the bypass and band off and on for several years but was always uncomfortable with rerouting nature's plumbing and having something plastic that required upkeep in my body. That all changed after learning about my stupid knee injury. While waiting for my knee surgery I went to a seminar for surgery. I found out all the requirements for my insurance company and started working on them. I found success with a non surgical doctor in the same office and put off the surgery part. Due to recovery time I had a stall in my dr visits and had to start over three months later. I had gained back most of my weight while recovering but over the next several months of starting back up I had dropped 30 lbs. I was happy and all was going well until the pain in my knee came back and I couldn't work out. I was told I have stress fractures in my knee caused by my weight and the thinner cartridge in my knee. The doctor said I need to lose weight more quickly so he recommended surgery. I consulted with my weight loss doctor and next thing I know I'm waiting on insurance approval. It was fairly easy because I'd already had the dietician visits and the psych evaluation. My surgery date is less than three weeks away and on Monday I start a two week diet of no fat, low fat, no meat. I'm starting to freak out and trying to find answers to all of these questions that are suddenly popping in my head and I do not like what I have found online so far. Then I found this site. I'm looking forward to sharing my journey with everyone and putting to rest some of my fears. :svengo: -
Fellow band to sleevers: was your post op food progression slow?
Threetimesacharm replied to kshallow's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my revision on September 10, 2012 and had no issues at all. When progressing through the food stages, as I listened to my body, I did extend some phases by a couple of days and it was well worth it. I have had no vomiting, no sliming, but I also do not overeat. I learned many lessons with the band so the sleeve has been quite easy for me. I reached my goal weight in 6 months less a day and currently am still losing. WOOHOO sleeve!!! -
Pooping all the time now!
HealthyLifeStyle posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am almost in my 6th month of post surgery for the bypass. I have noticed that my bowel movements have changed a lot since before the surgery. I used to be constipated all the time. Now I barely eat anything, and I have to go. Sometimes even in the morning when I haven't eaten anything I have to go. Has this happened to anyone? It is to the point where I can't even leave my house, because I am afraid I am going to have an accident. -
AM I GOING TO GAIN WAIT???
mindyloohoo replied to LANENADELCACHEL's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know how you feel. I was the same. Always hungry. So far the proposed they talk about in the forums is not suppressing hunger for me. I am six weeks out and could eat anything and stll be hungry two hours later. Now, I am a band to sleeve revision and have more of my upper stomach due to band scar tissue. I'm lucky, my surgeon actually called me back yesterday after my email to her about the hunger. She told me I was not eating enough and not often enough. She is ok with me still having a protien shake for breakfast, like you, I am not a morning eater. She doesn't want it to have more then 110 calories with at least 15 protien. Then 3 hours later for a snack, a baby carrot, some celery sticks and cucumbers. 3 hours later at least 3oz lean meat with some broccoli. Another snack of veggies before I leave work, then dinner with meat and green veggies . If still hungry before bed. Half an apple for my sweet item. If said all of this is heavy dense protien and fiber rich food. Should fill me up and clean me out, so to speak. I was also on a supplement from my pcp that my surgeon thought promoted hunger, so we have stopped it for now. I have to email her next week with my results. Hope this helps. -
Gastric Bypass or Sleeve Gastrectomy?
MacMadame replied to flee75's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm sorry, but that's simply not true and it's a matter of biological fact. The greater curvature of the stomach is the big stretchy part. It is designed to expand when food is put into it. The part that remains after a sleeve is a very tough muscle Fiber and is extremely hard to stretch. Bypass pouches (which are made out of the fundus) typically start out holding 1-2 oz immediately post-op as they are swollen. So do the sleeves. Then over time the swelling goes down and by one year out, many bypass patients can eat as much as a cup of food at time even hard Protein, while at the end of the first year a sleeve patient's sleeve typically holds 4-5 oz. of food only and never gets bigger. Stretching of the pouch is an issue with bypass and that's why regain is an issue. Over a period of time, average EWL for bypass and band approach each other. This is largely due to regain on the part of bypass patients. Generally 25% of bypass patients experience regain compared to 10% of sleeve patients. Btw, LapSF publishes their results in respected peer-reviewed journals. To imply that their data is biased is laughable. They do a lot of sleeves because they've seen how well they work. -
Scared of my surgery
Astrasmom replied to CurvasPeligrosas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just the opposite. If you weren't feeling all of this, I would say you aren't normal. But you are very normal. It's major surgery. As with any surgery there are risks. To be honest with you I can't sit here and say that no one has died on the table due to complications, because I know there have been deaths. But what I can tell you is that the rate of success is proven to be higher then the rate of deaths and complications of the lapband. I have only 1 regret since I have been banded. That is that I didn't get it done sooner. My doctor told me that they expect you to lose 50% of your body weight in the first year. I am already 75% down and only 8 months (100 lbs.) I have not weighed this much since 1987. I can not be 100% forward with you and say you will be ok, because no one knows and I can't tell the furture. I can tell you that the surgery wasn't that bad and I have been through Open Heart Surgery on the bypass machine. So if I can make it through that, I'm sure you will be fine with the Lapband surgery. I wish you much luck and please keep us posted. -
Band Removal and Sleeve in one surgery ... what should I expect?
hvmontoya replied to Allie1958's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the band to sleeve revision. It was the best thing I had ever done. I was miserable with the band as I would eat and throw up with the healthy food but could easily eat the crap food. I'm blessed with my federal employee insurance and paid 300 dollars for everything. But average price is about 4500 dollars in Mexico, some very reputable doctors I personally had Dr. Salas for a full body lift and removal of thigh skin which was done when I had lost weight on my own prior to the band ( which was worthless) or sleeve. It has been the best thing I have ever done. I'm a little over a month out and down almost 60 lbs ( if I'm not mistaken). After surgery I was really weak for about 2 weeks but could have managed working at home.. good luck -
Band Removal and Sleeve in one surgery ... what should I expect?

With your acid reflux, has the surgeon considered revising you to a Gastric Bypass instead of a VSG? -
Hi everyone, My mom has gastric bypass a few yrs ago and lost 80 pds despite needing to loose 120. Unfortunately, after that my cousin died tragically in a accident, my uncle died from cancer and she was diagnosed with cancer. She has now put on 35 pounds after all these tragic events so after her oncologist gave her the green light, we went back to her WLS surgeon. He suggested the best option now is a lapband over her bypass. We never heard of it! Has anyone heard of it here? Experiences, results more importantly safety?? We appreciate your help! I just was banded so once I recover, I want to take care of her. Thanks so much

Well you are right on the edge of a qualifying BMI. If you weight 230, you are okay. If you weigh 220, you may be a bit under. You might want to weigh yourself and then make sure you meet a minimum BMI of 40 at your initial consult. If they put your height down as 5'2", that will help too. I've heard BCBS is pretty straightforward if you want a band or bypass. So that's good.

Greetings everyone. I have been lurking here for a week or so. I've struggled with my weight since I was a child (joined weight watchers for the 1st time @ 12). I can't count the number of times I have joined that program since then. I always seem to loose 20 or 30 lbs and then stall out completely. I did once go from 210 to 150 in a 6 month period of time after a very bad end to a long term relationship. LOL, that was the first time in my life I just could not eat! It was not the healthy way to do it, though! I have known several co-workers who had lap band procedure done and had great success. I was never sure if I would qualify or not, though. When I went for my yearly physical in Jan. my PCP noted that I had gained some significant weight over the last year. She asked if I had ever consisdered bariatric surgery (she had gastric bypass done herself about 6 years ago). I told her I did not know if I would qualify or not as I do not have any major health issues. She suggested doing a referral to the surgeon in my area who does this type of procedure and to discuss with him whether I meet the qualifications or not and whether gastric bypass or the lap band would be best for me. I am leaning toward the lap band. I am 5' 2.75" and am between 220 & 230 # at the moment (I don't weigh myself). At any rate, my pcp made the referral to Dr. Jamie Loggins. I have my first appointment on March 13. I received a big packet of paperwork that I have already filled out. The person who called to set up the appointment advised I should expect to be there for 2 hours. Any idea what I can expect during those two hours? I am assuming since I have seen a number of co-workers go through this process, that my health insurance is fairly good about approving it. I have Anthem as insurance. Anyone have experience w/ this company? Look forward to learning lots here and getting to know you all! TSB

Jeremy in the exercise forum is wayyy cool! I do adore him, and he's OH staff. My subscriptions are all messed up and I was able to speak with the editor of OH today. I told him flat out that OH is for bypass and not banded folks. He agreed and admitted they are trying to change that. I explained I'd believe it when I see it. I told him that if it wasn't for Jeremy I would end my subscription and tell them to buggar off. He understands. I don't care for the forum, but Jeremy in the exercise forum is very cool.

Garland Mom... Will you revise to another type of surgery? Everyone Else... Some people are just more sensitive to fills (and the pressure they place on the esophagus) than others, per my (banded) surgeon. Therefore, a tiny fill can be "too tight" in that respect, but still not provide restriction. It's okay to rely on meds to control the reflux, as long as you have had everything checked and your stoma is a reasonable diameter. That's what determines a too-tight band - the size of the stoma. Your stoma should be about the size of a number two pencil.

Did anyone see the Today Show this morning about the obese brain?
OutsideMatchInside replied to nolady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@rolosmom7 Your stomach empties as soon as things enter it, the opening at the bottom of your stomach opens. You can see this on a live swallow test. Dense Protein takes longer to move through your stomach but things that are not dense and are sliders, move right on through. If you push them through with liquids, you can eat as much as you want. Long term a sleeve or bypass won't save you from over eating, only you can do that. -
Frustrated after consult...help!
Telecia replied to CandyE's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
oh gosh I cant help but comment cause In my own family there have been 5 people who have had bypass surgerys and none yet (Im waiting to get approved) with the band and all of them are not what could be called success stories. My mom lost her first 100lbs and never really lost anymore, has major stomach issues now and malnutrition. Still overweight and struggling with it. My uncle ended up being huge (400+)despite 2-3 WLSurgerys and passed away in his 50's. 2 aunts who did a bit better lost most of their weight but still do the diet yoyo 4-5 years later. One cousin who had it done and hasn't reached her goals yet. And over the 2 years i've known her hasn't lost or gained a whole lot. Is still at least 50lbs overweight When it comes to so called *Statistics* In our age of computers and internet you can find *Statistics* to back up just about anything you can imagine within reason. And that many a time the people in the studies often times only participate for the money or chance for free health care during the study. So they aren't always serious about about what ever it is the study involves. The facts from *Real* people on this site for me holds WAY more truth in my eyes. Then any so called study. And if you read enough of the forum you'll see for yourself that IT IS POSSIBLE. To lose ALL the weight you want to. But its YOU who has to make it happen. If the band is what you want don't let your doctor talk you out of it. If he/she cant accept that you've made a decision then find another doctor. Get a second opinion if you need to. its ghastly to me that so many doctors try to push bypass instead of the band. Cause at least the band is removable If to many problems occur. Bypass isn't they can't put back what they took out. I look at my mom with missing teeth and sunken eyes from the malnutrition she has been fighting for years and wish I could strangle whoever came up with the idea of the bypass. -

with proper diet AND EXERCISE i believe you can lose as much as you want no matter what route you take or even if you take weightloss surgery or not. my problem was i never could STICK with anything long enough and even when i did, the weight ALWAYS came back plus some! i'm only 4 days post op and i eat when i'm hungry and stop when i'm full...granted i'm on the "mushies" diet right now...but i was surprised today to learn that i've already lost 6.9 lbs!!! in only 4days!!! the lapband ROCKS! my dr. tried to convince me for the gastric bypass but i simply told him, i'm not looking to get skinny, i'm comfortable being fat bc fat is all i know. i just want to know how much do i need to lose to lose the co-morbidities that i have (sleep apnea, diabetes, hypothyroid) and he said then go for the lapband. now that being said, i have full intention of losing more then just the co-morbidities....for $13,500 plus interest its only worth it to me to get my monies worth and that means doing everything the right way and working hard at it. i haven't been able to do much of the exercise part yet bc i'm still healing, but i've already begun to walk daily. i just walk as much as i can down the street and back and then i drive it in my car to see how far i walked. i also log EVERYTHING that goes into my mouth and ALL the walking i do. buy yourself a journal and keep track of it. mine looks something like this: @ 8am 6oz carnation instant bkfst @ 11am 1.5oz banana @ 2:45pm 1/2 SugarFree Popsicle @ 6pm 2oz green Beans 3.5oz scalloped potatoes @ 9:30pm 2oz SugarFree Jello -
Hi everyone! My name is Sue and I live in Dublin, OH (near Columbus). I am very interested in finding out more about banding. I did attend a seminar in Columbus...with Dr. Meyer. I went in leaning more toward banding but they seem to be pushing more toward Bypass surgery which quite frankly scares me. I am the nervous type and although I know I need to do something to help get the weight off, I don't want to regret my decision either way I decide. I am very interested in finding out more about people's results and experiences in both banding and by pass to help me decide which way is best for me to go. I weigh 298 and would like to get down to 175 or so. I am 40 yrs. old and have a family history of health issues relating to weight that I know if I do not do something drastic soon, I too will fall into the family doom! Any info anyone can provide me to help me make my decision including the best doctors in my area, experiences after surgery etc. I would be very grateful. I am looking forward to reading blogs and making new friends here so let me get started. Thanks for reading! Sue:rolleyes2:

Is Lap Band right for losing 80 lbs?
Headhunter replied to david6789's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The simple answer is yes, it CAN help you lose that weight. But, the better question is, "is it right for ME?". The different Weight Loss Surgeries are really meant for different body types and personalities. You might need restriction (lap band, Sleeve), or you might need Malabsorbtion (Bypass). And, there is the possibility that NONE of them will work well for you. It's not as simple as just choosing a surgeon, going in and telling them what you want. You really need to do the research and find out what YOU need. And, don't rule out the very real possibility that a different diet/exercise program might be what works for you as well. The BEST weight loss surgery is NO surgery. You really don't want to do this unless you HAVE to. People are very quick to jump into WLS these days, because insurance is pretty quick to pay for it, and the advertisements make it sound like a "fast and easy" solution. MOST Lap Band "recipients" and the those who have had other WLS will tell you that it is neither fast NOR easy. Do a LOT of research, and don't go too much by what OTHER people's experiences have been. Just because something worked well for them does NOT mean it will work well for you. Take your time to study this.....you didn't become obese overnight, and you shouldn't make any quick decisions in picking a solution to the problem. best of luck to you in this process! HH -

Why did you choose the sleeve over bypass?
teacupnosaucer replied to goingtothebeach's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
he actually suggested bypass to me initially, as he thought it had the best evidence of long term success since i'm still so young. I just wasn't comfortable with the idea of a bypass, and when I told him he was totally onboard with me doing a sleeve instead. very supportive! nope, I am travelling to Calgary to him. even though I live basically in Edmonton, the wait list for their program is so astronomically long compared to Calgary's I decided I'd rather just make the drive! it's been a lot of kms, but even with asking for a referral to the Edmonton clinic MONTHS before asking for a referral to the Calgary one, I am on course now to have my surgery in Calgary before even getting my intake appointment in Edmonton. I left myself on the Edmonton waitlist just out of grim curiosity, but will remove myself once I have my surgery. I'm sure somebody else will be overjoyed to take my spot! i had my scope in High River as well. if you haven't had one before, don't sweat it. the worst part of the whole process is the nasty numbing spray for your throat. you don't remember anything else of the procedure, and you wake up high as hell and they're feeding you muffins! the nurses there are amazingly kind and good at their jobs, too. -

I Finally found a Protein & Energy Drink I like
showboatgirl replied to cindy032969's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My sister and I had a lot of different products that we had tried. We took two large bags of protein, vitamins, calcium, etc. to our weight loss support group. Most of the people in the group are gastric bypass. They were thrilled to get the different products free. They were like kids on Christmas morning when they went saw our goodies. We tried a lot of different stuff and it was too expensive to throw it away. We got rid of it and it probably helped some people. Needless to say, we were the hit of support group. -
Dealing with loved ones that don't support your decision...
BubbleSam replied to BubbleSam's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for responding to me. I do still live at home. My goal is within the next year I will be able to afford living on my own. My mom has tried talking to him but that does no good. I think just limiting anything to do with it would be best like you said. I think why he is so worried is because my aunt had bypass and she was miserable and my cousins husband also had bypass and he had to have it reversed. I know there are risks but I think since I am doing the sleeve it will be a much different outcome. The other issue I think he has is that he can't imagine giving up food and the quantity he eats so he thinks I shouldn't either. How long are you post op if you don't mind me asking? Do you think that the surgery was worth it? Everyone I have talked to says it's the best thing they have done and that they wish they had done it sooner.
