    Breaking down

So far from going through a lot of forums on here, not many people have the same pre-op requirements. Yes, the liquid diet prior to surgery is to ensure that the liver does shrink for a lesser chance of complications. However, there's no need to worry if your daughters surgeon hasn't given her one. You can always call and ask, I'm sure. Good luck to your daughter on her surgery, mine is in 10 days.

    Paralyzed with Fear

I think it is the complication risk that scares me. I had another (not related) simple procedure years ago that left me with irreversible nerve damage. It was one of the risks that was listed among the 1001 others. You always think "oh, that won't happen" but it did to me. 12 years of chronic pain later, I really read the possibilities.

    Breaking down

My daughter is now 4 days away from surgery. She was only required to lose 5lbs and has not been informed to begin any special diets. I also read that a liquid diet prior to surgery is advisable to maintain a healthy functioning liver to minimize complications during surgery. This info freaks me out especially when I find out through postings rather than the doctor. It maybe that it isn't necessary for her either case I'll have her contact the doctor and ask about it.

    Drinking With a Straw?

Right after surgery. If you know how to drink from a straw without sucking in air (not complicated), there shouldn't be an issue. Those who can't will likely experience bloating and pain if having it quickly after surgery and sucking in a bunch of air.
  5. What are they going to do about the fluid collection? Are you on antibiotics? That would probably need to be resolved first. As far a second opinion on the gallbladder it wouldn't hurt if you are not sure about going through surgery. There's a risk of stones migrating out of the gallbladder and causing complications, but you need to discuss this with a surgeon and come to your own conclusion.
  6. This is my story and Journey after having my bypass years ago-9 to be specific. It all started out with a huge hiatal hernia to be repaired. My surgeon recommend me to seek lap band surgery, as being overweight might not hold the hernia repair , and he told me it would be a real diservice to me if he did not advice me to do so. So, off I went to a weight loss seminar, and spoke with Dr. Gregory Schroder as to wether or not I would be a candidate. He felt not, as having the Nisson Fundoplasty could potenuate problems down the road. I so appreciated his honesty, and he mentioned a surgeon who performs gastric bypasses to see if I was a candidate. Immediately I was, despite my history of depression and chrohns.. So off I go. Oh I was told that there could be complications such as a leak, and nausea post op, but this rarely happends. I was also told to be very strict with my diet, because after three years, your puch my be stretched, and weight gain indeed can happen. I was very compliant. Weight loss very successful.Hoever, ther have been so many complications down the road. My surgeon left to go to Doctor's Without Borders, and has left the state. I ended up having immediate surgeery to remove my gallbladder 1 year later. Dr. Shroder's group did that for me. Three years post-op I had an open strangulated hernia repair- again by Dr. Gregory Schroder. I suffer from chronic nausea and vomiting. I have terrible painful lower cramps as well. I had a picc line 3 years ago, as my weight has drooped so low due to the nausea and vomiting. My weight has dropped as low as 86 pounds. I just can't keep the weight on. How ironic life is. You'd think how nice it would be to eat and not gain a pound, but it has become a curse. I could not work anymore in my favorite job as a PACU nurse, as I didnt have the strength to move the stretchers anymore, or the stamina. The excertion just made my weight drop even more. I can work , but can't do physical labor anymore. I want you to know I watch MY 600 POUND LIFE. My husband and daughter don't understand. So many people struggle with different things in their lifes. Life after surgery is a Journey in itself, and will always be. I so applaud those who share their stories, and know that the journey never stops. I share my story here, becaus gastric bypass is a serious surgery. I think people should really think about it instead of jumping on it right away like I did. Learn to love yourself. I know how hard it is to be overweight. Everyone wants a quick fix. I know I did. I wish everyone who does have the surgery much success. I will continue with my story as time progresses. Bless you all-CBT
  7. The idea of an iud seriously freaks me out lol. And of all the women I know with them, more have had complications than not. I might actually be considering getting pregnant this year so the iud option would be out for me for now [emoji53] Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. I think if you'd never had the complications, and you would have woken up without the sleeve you'd be just as upset. Especially without the perspective of complications. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. Have you seen Dr. Matthew Weiner's youtube videos? He explains why surgery works when diet and exercise don't (after a point). Who is to say you wouldn't be one of the lucky 5% that CAN "keep it off"? You haven't tried! But, are you a numbers man? (You are a dude, right?) Surgery= 95% chance of no complications 85% chance of losing and keeping off more than 120lbs for 5 years 85% chance of minimizing future health problems (high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, joint pain) No surgery= 100% chance of no complications 5% chance of losing and keeping off more than 120lbs for 5 years 5% chance of minimizing future health problems. If you really feel strongly about the "one last try".. go ahead! You are young and can afford the time spent. The surgery will be there waiting for you if you need it. A year or two won't make a difference in the big picture. You'll know it is time for surgery when you are continuing to work hard but the weight refuses to budge for months or starts going back up.. or you notice the work becomes "too hard", and you just can't do it anymore. Say you drop 80lbs and hit that wall. Please, please, please, hurry and get the procedure before gaining it all back! The surgery will be safer, and your recovery easier when you are at a lower weight. Your surgeon should be happy to hold off on your procedure until you are ready, so don't let that appointment worry you. Your MIND has to be in the right place, or it's not the right thing to do at this moment. Everyone gets cold feet before surgery.. just try and figure out whether this is normal nerves, or something really worth exploring.

    TPN

I had weight loss surgery in 2003 since then I have had majior complications. I now am unable to eat or drink enough and absorb it to keep me alive. So I have a port a cath implanted in my chest that I get hydration and TPN ( food ) from at night. I'm 38 and they just told me yesterday I am out of options and this will be my normal. That would be okay if the tpn didn't attack you over and now put me at stage 3 liver fibrosis. I feel so defeated physically and psychologically. Anyone else experiencing anything similar!?! I'm in rough spot andcould sure use some advice!

    Banders #7

I still want to be alone, 3 years after being widowed. Is that normal behavior? My weight is normal. Maybe my attitude isn't Would anyone understand about eating restrictions? Seems complicated and I want smooth. Sigh
  12. I had lap band. It slipped and could not go back into place. It eroded and I had to have revision too much scarring. In 2009 I was so scared and elected band. I've not had one complication after bypass and am kicking myself that I didn't do that surgery first. I was miserable w band. Never was restricted if I was too tight I would regurgitate in sleep. Sorry just my story. I went in so often to take fluid in and out regardless of what you do make sure you choose surgeon near by. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I want to thank all of you for your honest responses. A big reason I want a reversible procedure is because I'm vegetarian, but would like to eat a vegan diet, and not be so reliant on protein. I came across Joel Fuhrman's book (The End of Dieting) and am even more convinced of a plant-based eating plan. Most of all, I know I have to change my relationship to eating. To Berry78 - Well done on your weight loss, and thank you for the encouragement! I hear what you're saying - I have heard of lapband complications, but compared to the sleeve and bypass, it has the least problems statistically (and there can be problems with ALL procedures). I would be able to get assistance for the gastric balloon whether in the USA or the other country, but I don't know if my insurance in the USA would cover a procedure done in another country, if something went wrong - will ask my surgery team. To catwoman7 - First of all, congrats on your stellar results! Another doctor also said he'd be wary of a newer procedure, although the gastric balloon has been used for years in other countries. And my surgeon in the USA is phasing out the lapband, although he's done many hundreds of them and had good results. To MowryRocks - Congratulations on your success! I can get the balloon done in the USA city where I live as well. The thing is I can't afford it here - but my insurance will pay for the lapband, sleeve or bypass. To Mountaingal - Great work on keeping up your weight loss! I understand that gastric plication is also not covered by insurance, but am encouraged since it is reversible. What are its side-effects? To sammy246 - thanks for sharing your opinion. What would be your pick? I recently went to a bariatric support group where 90% had the sleeve done, and although all had significant weight loss, they were all battling with keeping it off. Again, many thanks - I appreciate your help!

    band to sleeve insurance?

I am having my band revised to RNY and do not have to do the diet again because I have several serious complications with the band. Also, my surgeons office said that it would be covered by Medicare and BCBS.
  15. Congratulations on reaching your goal. I do realize the preventive measures we all should take toward well being. You described the amount of time it takes without complications (about 45 minutes), I want to be hopeful cause the doctor told us something differently. He said 3-4 hours. He's known to be an experienced doctor and an expert in this field. Truthfully, what scares me the most is the amount of time under anesthesia and any complications that may occur. Social issues: I have witnessed her low confidence, self esteem and being prejudged before. I've always come to her rescue and defended her but I realize that hasn't been enough. She's been in a relationship for over 1year. He's a great guy and very supportive. He even helped by joining a gym with her. He knew her when she was lighter in weight (195-205lbs) and he's still sticking around cause he loves who she is inside. That means the world to me as her mom and woman. He said he'll be there at the hospital when she gets out of recovery. I'm going to do what I can to help her succeed. She'll have to do her part to make it happen. Thank you for your comments.

    Concerned Mom

Bariatric surgery is associated with a number of risks...nonetheless, remaining obese is the bigger threat to your daughter's health and social life. The sleeve gastrectomy results in less than one percent of major complications. It's a 30 to 45 minute surgery. Since your daughter is young, she's less likely to experience major complications. Physically, obesity predisposes your daughter to diabetes, heart problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, arthritis, sleep apnea, certain cancers, infertility, and other illnesses. Socially, being obese predisposes your daughter to lazy judgments from society, reduced options in the dating marketplace (the majority of young men prefer normal-weight women), and missed career opportunities (many hiring managers prefer to hire normal weight applicants). The sleeve was also the first surgical procedure I'd ever undergone in my life. Due to having weight loss surgery in my 30s, I will have avoided the need for other surgeries as and procedures I age (e.g. knee replacements, open heart surgery, diabetic amputations, dialysis).
  18. Day 5:Pre-Op Diet.

First Entry: Its been about 8 days since I made my decision and booked my surgery. I'm writing on a public board because I imagine my fiance is already tired of hearing about every aspect of VSG that there is, I find I can't stop talking about it, because I'M SO EXCITED! Also because only him and my mother know, and I need somewhere to type, and I happen to love the users on this site, so nice, honestly!

I'm booked in on July 6th at the OCC in Tijuana MX with Dr.Ortiz. I talked to my nutritionist on the 6th and she literally wrote in her first email "absolutely no alcohol from this point on". Even SHE bolded it in the email (as though I was only going to skim over her email regarding a major surgery, HA!) I had from that day until July 20th (2 weeks out from surgery) to be on Atkins, minus a few things. I'm supposed to be getting protein shakes but they're in the mail somewhere.. It is Canada after all. So, day 5 of sugar withdrawals, lets see.. I do drink like sweetened creamer in my coffee, only one a day, and I don't use too much, maybe only 1 serving which is 5grams. I still feel bad about that 5 grams, but I did not realize what a terrible idea trying to quit caffeine and sugar at the same time would be at first without it. Then I spent almost the entire weekend dizzy and lethargic on the couch  while binge watching Netflix in between napping. After 2 days of that, I decided I would go back to my one cup of coffee a day and just live with my 5 grams.

Days 1,2 of no sugar were like a blur. Day 3 was weird because I had no appetite but I was unbelievably thirsty which I thought was funny since I was drinking over 2L of water a day. That 3rd day was headaches from wake up until bedtime. Day 4 was my least favorite, I had the exact same lunch and dinner, 4-5ox steak and lettuce (seriously Atkins restrictions, go f yourself sometimes).. then about 3 or 4 times I found myself walking around the kitchen opening cupboards and looking for snacks. As though magically there would be sugar-free, aspartame free Jello cups just waiting for me, or opening the freezer would make sugar free popsicles appear. Nope, all I found was the Cheetos for my fiance in one cupboard, the salt and vinegar chips I asked him to hide from me in another cupboard, and cookies in the last cupboard I opened. For some strange reason The day I shopped for approved Pre-Op foods for myself, I also bought a large amount of junk food for him. I dont know why. We all make mistakes right?  hahaha.  He's so unbelievably supportive though in a million and one ways. The first time I asked him his opinion about getting surgery, he thought exercise and healthy eating was the answer and said he didn't really like it. Then I brought it up again (with a few facts to back me up - I said I dont want to worry about things like diabetes, strokes, heart disease, and future pregnancy complications).. He is so supportive it has blown my mind, he literally even woke me up last night when he got home from football and asked if it was ok if he ordered pizza. I was asleep so I wasn't going to miss it, but I thought it was so sweet of him to care. He even just called me to tell me where were going for dinner for his moms birthday, so now I can look up the menu online and pick the best thing!

All in all, Its been 5 days dieting, and 4.5 days sugar-free (mostly) I weighed in last Wednesday at 295. Tomorrow I report to my nutritionist, and I'll update my weight tomorrow. Sorry for such a long post - I knew I should have been writing from the beginning. Its kind of calming.

Now to finish off my wonderful day! (that might just be the sugar in my creamer talking hehee....)

Congratulations on deciding a better future for yourself! I'm equally happy to hear you've got a great support system at home too and it was super sweet of him to ask about the pizza. :780_sparkling_heart:The pre-op was the hardest the first few days for myself too. After these few days, it should get easier.. Like you, I didn't give up my 5g creamer either. My husband bought me sugar free stuff and it was disgusting to me. So I went back to my almond creamer. I still lost my weight too...don't let that itty bitty amount of sugar scare you.

Keep us posted! We all love to talk on here. LOL :)

Such a great post. I am happy for you!! I had my surgery in Mexico also, but with Dr. Illan. I have heard great things about the OCC. I think the best options in Mexico are Dr. Illan and OCC.

Your fiance sounds like a great guy. My hubby is very supportive also!! I look forward to hearing more about your journey in the future.

    Panniculectomy?

Thank you for sharing your story. My panni is scheduled for June 30. The drains are what scare me. Were you in hospital for one night? I'm scheduled for 23 hours avoiding any complications. It sounds like your experience was very positive. Best for the rest of your surgeries. Freelee

    Any June Sleevers!?!

You haven't started yours yet? I just don't want major complications, that's what has me nervous. I'm located in Nyc, wbu?

Hi -- I live in Placitas and had surgery with Dr. Tyner on May 30. I'm two weeks out tomorrow and all is well -- tired, but very little pain and no complications. I certainly understand feeling nervous. I was a wreck right before the procedure, myself. I wish you all the best! Dr, Tyner is a wonderful surgeon and everyone at Sandoval Regional was top-notch. I wish you all the best!

    Tough Decision

My concern with Mexico was what if there was a complication. Would your insurance cover it? The craziness in the world wouldn't be a valid reason for me because Tijuana isn't a hotbed of terrorist activity. If your insurance will cover any complications after the surgery I wouldn't see an issue. You will still need some tests done I'm sure.

    Long term vsg implications

Hi, For the person who said my posts show up as spoilers, sorry, but I believe that you should be well informed about every aspect of your health, before surgery and after surgery in this case so you will know what you may have to encounter. Better to find out now than later. i have surgery before and the complications were horrendous. It wasn't weight loss surgery but after the surgery, I started reading about how others had complications from same surgery and didn't know about certain things that could happen. Yes, weight loss surgery is great. I am planning on mine. I am pre-op but I am a reference librarian by occupation so I dig for information to stay well informed to make educated decisions. Sorry and for those who responded about their experiences and concerns, thank you. I have used intelligence to guide your decisions concerning your health. As my PCP stated, you look at the risks vs the benefits, then decide.
  24. Thank you! I already have medical complications associated with obesity and I am right there with you on the trajectory - my knees are starting to ache and I'm pre-diabetic. Scary stuff. Doing nothing is definitely not an option for me as I'm not willing to accept chronic pain and illness and early death. Yikes.
  25. I was very nervous about complications. I loved my life before surgery and was nervous that surgery might somehow alter my happiness. I think nervousness and some worry are perfectly normal. If you aren't sure you can handle the changes that are required then it might be time to rethink surgery. I didn't have any complications so I am very pleased I went ahead with surgery.
