    Curious About Post-Op Days

Hello. I just completed my first week post-op. Right after surgery I woke up in a LOT of pain and very stiff. As soon as I stood up I felt better so the first day I walked as much as I could. A family member set a timer and I'd sleep, timer would go off and I'd walk, and that went on all day. The next day I think I was a little more sore. I kept up the ritual with the timer. Surgery was on Wednesday and by Tuesday I returned to work. Right now it has been 8 days since my surgery and I actually feel great. I'd like to add that my BCBS wouldn't cover my surgery so we used secondary Surgery Plus and I wasn't able to stay at the hospital so I was an out patient. Please make sure you have someone with you to help you. I literally couldn't raise myself out of bed by myself. Best of luck!!!

    Does Eating really get easier?

I am 1 week po as of yesterday. I have been feeling the same! Two small sips of soup or protein drink are fine but three makes me feel sick. Today I am keeping Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt at my desk and taking a couple SMALL bites every 30 mins or so. It has 15 grams of protein. I also fine it impossible to reach my protein goal and probably am only getting 30 IF that. But, this too shall pass. I'm down 18.6 lbs and wearing a shirt that was tight before so yay! lol

    Curious About Post-Op Days

it was ok, I think the first week you are tired and just concentrating on healing, week 3 however I was over it and regretting it big time, but I don't anymore.
  4. Hello lovelies.....tell me how your first week or first two weeks were after surgery. Please be honest. I think that is what I am worried about the most. All of my paperwork has been sent off for insurance approval

    Regrets

Don’t be down on yourself! Millions of people eat loaded mashed potatoes without becoming obese. Hell, if we all stuck to just 4 tablespoons of “bad” food we would all be fine. There are many approaches to weight loss post wls. Some have a long list of nevers that cause anxiety and steal joy. I would never have done the surgery if I thought that I couldn’t have 3 tablespoons of our families traditional potato gratin ever again. In the past it would have piled high on my enormous plate and I would have eaten it over and over that way until it was all gone. Every Christmas I did this! There’s a big difference! I knew that I would fail if I went into this surgery thinking that I would never get to enjoy food again. I have this tool and education to keep me healthy. I can’t eat a ton even if I want to. That’s a win. I will only enjoy after protein goals are met. Won’t be much room for that indulgence but I will have it here and there. I will no longer stress eat boxes of little Debbie’s in my car, I will now enjoy every small 3 to 4 bites of my children’s birthday cakes on their special days. I was already enjoying the 1200 calorie diet I was on preop minus the hunger, as I focused 95 percent on healthy proteins, beautiful vegetables, gourmet cheeses and nuts in super small portions, the deliciousness of a tart apple., all of the right foods while spending maybe 5 percent having a bite of the cupcake my daughter baked, etc. I myself will have long lasting success focusing on good quality real food with the help of a restriction to remind me when I am overindulging in even the right foods with occasional treats of very small proportions. I wouldn’t have done this any other way.
  6. Hello everyone, My name is Zee. I’m from the Philadelphia area, 36 yr old wife and mother of 4 (1 going off to college next month). Had my first appointment with my surgeon Dr. Soans on 5/6/23. Did all my lab test, EKG, Pulmonologist appt, 2 out of 3 of the required Nutrition classes, 2 follow up 1 on 1 with nutritionist and found out I have sleep apnea. Have a cpap machine now and have been cleared by the pulmonologist. Have a follow up with surgeon on 7/6/23. Have been following what I am to do strictly so I’m hoping that goes well. I know I have to see a psychologist but don’t know when yet. I have Keystone First health insurance so I made sure to call them first and see if surgery was covered before starting this Journey. Really looking forward to this surgery so I can be more active in my kids lives.

    Regrets

Regrets? What you are feeling is not unique so you are in good company. The first few weeks can be difficult but WLS veterans almost unanimously say their only regret is not doing this years ago. WLS is a lifestyle change that takes discipline and dedication but it gets easier, especially when you start seeing and FEELING the results of your efforts. You got this and your Bariatric Pals are here to support and cheering you on!

I'm 3 days post-op for the first 3 days everything fine, but I keep waking up after 5 hours of lying down feeling sick, I've started walking daily 1 mile to alleviate the sickness and gas today I'm down on my fluids, as I've been feeling ill, however, i will try and complete my fluids today - start weight from the initial 2-week pre-op diet was 20.08 so far I've lost including pre-op fluids 22 pounds, there was really no pain after surgery.
  9. Weight loss is SO individual. Keep with your program, and you will lose weight. Between my preop diet and 2 months post op (10 weeks total), I've lost 48lbs. And i stall a lot. You got this!
  10. I just had the sleeve revision to gastric bypass on 6/13/23 and I am a little nervous now after reading a lot of these posts regarding the lack of weight loss.
  11. I was eating 5000 or 6000 calories a day. So even without the surgery, I would have lost the same amount of weight now if at the last minute after doing Optifast - I decided to cancel the surgery was my point. I have already learned how to eat better and detoxed from bad foods. I am not going to back to how I used to be. I don't regret the surgery at all, but it does give a perspective that I probably could have achieved the same result if I maintained the same discipline that I had to get the surgery. That is where I failed with past diets. When you are "forced" to drink shakes for 4 weeks that is different than just trying to diet for 4 weeks.

@Carla Ogwin I hear you. I think I’m going to try tuna and make a chicken salad this week. I’m down 21 but I still got a way to go.

    March 23 buddies yet?

Hi! I was sleeved on March 7th. My highest weight was 309 lbs, and my weight after the pre-op diet was 296 lbs. I'm currently sitting at 251 lbs. I'm very excited to make it to - 60 lbs, but I'm at a bit of a stall. I walk 5-6 times a week for 20-30 minutes (20 minutes moreso lately because it's so hot outside), and I also do resistance training 2 times a week. I have way more energy than I did pre-op, which is so far my favorite aspect. I'm struggling with trying to find the balance between harder and too easy workouts right now. I can eat most food, if not all food with no discomfort. I've been sick twice, but it wasn't bad and I think it was due to me eating too fast at the time. Bread doesn't sit as easily in my stomach, but I don't miss it. I don't miss sodas, but I do miss my sparkling water. 😪 I haven't been able to see a big difference on myself until recently. I still feel like I look the same, but everyone else sees a difference and that is very encouraging. I struggle with PCOS, so I am hoping that as I lose weight, my ovulatory and fertility issues will improve, too. I'm seeing a lot of small changes so far, and it's all so exciting. It's the best decision that I've ever made.
  14. Meeting with the surgeon tomorrow!! excited and nervous. I have to still be at or under my goal weight from the insurance and I am worried my body will betray me again as it did for my final weigh-in. Hopefully not though because I have to drive 3 hours to see the surgeon so a reschedule over my weight being off by one or two lbs will really put a wrench into things.  Does anyone have any advice on questions I should ask? I did write out a list, but maybe there is something you wished you would have asked pre-surgery.

Does this make sense? Q about insurance and my doctor.

Great!! my advice is to get everything you can scheduled in advance and do not be afraid to advocate for yourself. For example, Molina wanted me to complete everything from stage 2 by June 23rd. The Dietician was the hardest to get on the schedule with, and I was just under 2 months into the program before I could get in to see her. Which meant I was not going to meet Molina's goal of having everything completed by June 23rd. So I called my insurance and was told as long as I had been going to my appointments and staying on track they could extend the completion time. Well, I was still worried so after a few visits with the Dietician I asked if I could get the 3 appointments that were scheduled through the end of July changed they were able to adjust things and I finished my appointments on June 13th. Now I am meeting with the Surgeon tomorrow!!
  16. I had lost roughly 60lbs doing Weight Watchers several years ago. As soon as I made it to goal, I stopped. In 3 years I gain back 100lbs because I couldn't control my eating. I'm only 2 months out from surgery, so I can't compare. I just know I couldn't do it again without help...thus surgery. I've tried so many diets these last 3 years and failed every time. I knew I needed to do something different this time around.
  17. My pharmacist said he’d have them in by the end of the week so we’ll see. 🤞🏻 A friend swears by the cream you rub on your thigh so I thought I’d ask my doctor about that if the shortage gets worse. Hadn’t heard about the vaginal cream as no one I know uses it. Thank you for the tip. Good to know about a couple of options.

That's good. I realized that I pay more attention to everything now. I'm reading everything I'm talking to my self lol in Walmart telling myself you know you can't have that. Imma wait one more week before I put anything in my body that's more solid because I need to see weight loss before I start adding all that other stuff

    March 23 buddies yet?

I had the bypass done on March 7th. I'm 5'4 and starting weight was 233, 221.4 on day of surgery. Today I weighed in at 184.6, so about 48 lbs lost in total. Really excited to hit 50 lost, and then I'll only have about 5 lbs to get to my previous low I had reached on my own about 5 years ago. I'm averaging about 1100 calories a day, and I track with LoseIt because I could see myself snacking around my restriction. I do "formal" exercise about 3x week, and I'm generally pretty busy around the house or going for walks. Energy level is pretty low though, I definitely don't feel like I'm bouncing around lol. Hope everyone else is well and healthy!

    March 23 buddies yet?

Hey March buddies! Just checking in on everyone again! How's it going?! As for me, I'll start with the stats. 5'2", sleeved 3/24/23. I was 212 lbs. before pre-op diet, 199.7 lbs on surgery day. I'm now 3 months out and weighing 168.2 lbs for a total of 42.8 lbs lost (from 212). Been stuck here for a week or so. Things are definitely slowing down. Lost about 6.8 lbs this past month. BUT, I still haven't been exercising, like AT ALL. Not even walking. And I feel it. My energy is very low. I've got to get back to (at least) walking soon. I'd like to throw in some strength training too, as I feel like a weakling these days. I haven't been tracking my food. I just kinda mentally keep track of my protein and have a 32 oz. cup that I make sure I drink at least 2 of. I'm just starting to track my food and macros again. I don't feel restriction and have no issues with any foods. I even had some soda (just once) and it didn't bother me. I've had a glass of wine too and that was fine also. Anywho, hope you all are doing great!

I know everyone is different but has anyone been given an indication from their clinics as to how much it might be possible to lose in the first month? I am 260lbs (was 265 last week before I started my version of liquid diet) and at moment don't exercise unless you count walking round shops at a leisurely pace. I just find it hard here to get answers in English from my clinic that don't confuse me. In fairness they speak and write to me in English but sometimes it does not make actual sense and my French is terrible, unless it involves food. Like for example I have been told to bring my own bath towel and €1 coins for water machine, now I know I am not going on a 4* holiday but I did expect that the hospital would provide towels and water, for the limited amount I will be able to drink when there. I didn't want to seem desperate and ask the surgeon

That is fortunate. I'm a two-week liquid diet before and after surgery. But I'll do it, I'm just glad to finally get this going. Origami Paddlers sound wonderful! Going to the ocean... I can't imagine how encouraging that must be. And fun! Enjoy the journey!
  23. i used to time my bites in the early months. if the timer in my watch went off and i didnt want to eat, i'd set it again and see if felt like food in the next interval (the length of the timer depended how far along post op i was) if i still didn't want to eat after 3 consecutive times the timer went off, i called DONE and put the food away. would make another attempt at in a couple hours. outside of water sips the first week post op, i didn't force myself to put any food nor drink i don't want to in my mouth. i still don't.
  24. Hi. My name is Lee Ann and like many others seems like I’ve been on a diet for the majority of my life. It’s been a constant battle. At one point in my life I weighed over 400 lbs and I was able to lose and get back some of my confidence. In 2010 I had a major car accident when a driver ran a light. And I became disabled because of the injuries that caused. With the injuries I was unable to get around like I once did and then some of the medications I was on added weight and my weight issues truly started getting me depressed so I decided to go through with gastric surgery. So about 6 years ago I started the process. Frustrating because I was having to restart 3 times because of either the scheduling or not having a dr appointment for 6 months in a row either because of how I was feeling or because the doctor was booked. Seemed like I wasn’t ever going to complete it. Then finally 4 years ago I had the gastric sleeve surgery and at the beginning problems started. I was so sick and my stitches started to open and I received no support from the doctors office and then the pandemic hit and my calls and emails went unanswered for 2-1/2 years. So when we moved so I could help my mom with her everyday life I looked into seeing a different gastric doctor. I’m still getting sick all most everyday and night plus the weight is coming back and I don’t understand how. I’m not sitting around eating just whatever I want. I am trying to get more food in but it’s hard when I hardly ever feel hungry. So after talking with my doctor about everything we’ve decided to go through with getting the gastric bypass. I’m hoping this will correct the issues and hopefully it’s soon.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi all! I had surgery on 6/13 sleeve to bypass revision. I was struggling with the liquid diet and I had some fish (cod & salmon) in small portions but only 10/11 days post op. I feel an aching pain in my left side all of a sudden but am passing stool so I dont think a blockage. I didnt lose any weight on my 2 week marker, I remained the same. Did I damage something? Also having a hard time knowing when I am full. Good luck to everyone out there
