    Pre op pio

I have all my dietary appointments scheduled and start the process 3/25! These from my wedding in November and a trip to the pumpkin patch with the kiddos. I want to do a reshoot post-op.
  2. I had surgery 6 months ago (8/24/2020), due to GERD and what the surgeon refered to as a huge hiatal hernia. The acid had eroded by throat so badly that I could not physically swallow some days. Nothing was working, max doses of both Omeprazole and Famotidine as well as swigging Malox nightly and still having break through acid, I also required a muscle relaxant to allow me to eat. Gastric bypass was my last resort (and actually started out as kind of a joke -"remove my stomach and the acid will stop") Until a surgeon told me that thay might be the ultimate solution for my problem. While getting use to this new way of life has been difficult at the beginnig. There were many day I cried "why did I do this" it is a vast improvement from the possibility of worsing dysphsia and esophageal cancer. I no longer require any medication, have not had any reflux at all and while the quantity is greatly deminished I can eat almost anything I want. The bonus is i no longer require BP medication and the weight loss of course. 80lbs down and I feel better in my own skin, as well as being healthier and happier.

    Revision

Hi! I am in your same boat. My original bypass was 11 years ago, and I am having a revision on Tuesday. It is a much more risky surgery because less is known about modifying a previous bypass. My doc is making a smaller stomach pouch and POSSIBLY distallizing (moving the anastamosis between stomach and intestine) further down the line. He tells me that after this process I will likely lose 10-20% of the excess weight. We shall see! Surgery 11am Tuesday. I should add that I see a bariatric team and they are very particular about candidates for revision; I'm not sure I would trust a surgeon who is not specifically doing WLS to make a revision recommendation. The science/data is just not out there yet. So! Good luck! See a doc who knows what they're doing! Let me know if you have questions - I'm happy to update along the way.

    What is your why?

What an amazing story I'm so happy for you. My fiance suffer with cellulitis and gout and it can be very painful. He would get the edema with that as well. He was also diabetic. he passed away in November of 2019 from complications of his weight loss surgery unfortunately. But when he died his diabetes and his CPAP prescription numbers were down to a healthy amount. ironically enough when he died he was the healthiest he'd ever been and he had lost 140 lb in 4 months.
  5. Since nobody else has, here's a study I found: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5406732/ I don't love the study, it's only 156 patients and boy do they have some large error bars on some of the numbers, but it should still give you a rough idea of what the reality is. In this study, the incidence of staple line leakage was 1.2% (2 patients), the incidence of staple hemorrhage was 0.6% (1 patient), incidence of GERD was 15.3% (24 patients), hiatal hernia requiring surgical repair was 0.6% (1 patient), and conversion to a gastric bypass was 0.6% (1 patient).
  6. Hi I had gastric bypass 16 years ago and the last few years I started to regain my weight back . I am 5’9 with 275 pounds now🥲 Going for a revision on the 22 but I have no idea if I can do it again or if there is something else the doctor can to help me loose the weight again. gastric by pass to another gastric bypass is possible? Anyone here did that?

    Any March Surgeries?

Hi ShaiMarie, I have known a lot of people to do the gastric sleeve first but then ended up having to do the bypass down the track because the sleeve wasn’t as effective long-term. Every person’s experience will be different of course and hopefully your surgeon can provide the best recommendation for you. All the best!!
  8. I'm having my gastric Bypass on the 16th and was just wondering if anyone here is on the same day or around the same day! I have not been put on a post OP diet because I've been trying keeping my weight under control. I've been cleared by my doctor and had my covid test done today. I'm all set to go! 9. I am now 52 years old and I have had a Lapband in Monterrey, Mexico in 2009  and a Bariatric Sleeve in Tijuana in 2017.  With the Lapband I lost maybe 2-35 pounds and gained it right back and then some. It was not an adjustable band it was just a ring around my stomach according to the surgeon (who had a hard time removing it) when I did my Gastric Sleeve.  When i decided to do the Bariatric Sleeve in 2017 my weight was 348 pounds and I was struggling with walking, breathing, no energy, buying/finding clothes and I was put on 2 blood pressure pills and a cholesterol pill. My Sleeve surgery went great and I was feeling so good down to 321 and loving it (I didn't even mind the liquid diet I was still on) and then I started to feel sick 2 weeks out of my Sleeve surgery and it ended up being a stomach leak on the staple line.  I struggled with drains for about 2 years and finally in December of 2019 i was drain and leak free.  After all that I was down 100 pounds and was weighing 248.  When I had the drain I never exercised I would just walk a bit with friends every other day maybe until we didn't because life got busy or I got sick again.  At the hospital I found that I was now lactose intolerant and I have not found any protein shakes I can drink without feeling sick to my stomach.  I have regained about 26 pounds and i just want input on how to lose weight since i am not on any particular diet and eat all kind of bad food until I am full ( i would love some recipes or a daily menu).  I have been considering the Gastric Bypass since I have horrible reflux and have been researching the pros and cons and would appreciate any input.

You might try the Thrive Lifestyle Mix. Its a protein shake but it does have some carbs. I have a problem with protein shakes. They make my stomach hurt. I recently started the Thrive 3 step which is a vitamin (in capsules) and a skin patch and a shake mix. The shake works for me and I think the reason why is because it has digestive enzymes in it. This makes it a lot easier for your stomach to break it down. It has amylase, bromelain, cellulase, protease, lipase, papain, and protease. Its like taking a whole digestive enzyme capsule with your protein shake, but its all in an individual serving envelop and you mix it with whatever you want. I mix mine with either water or almond milk, but you could mix it with soy milk if you wanted to do that. It is the easiest to digest nutrition shake I've ever done. If you decide you want to try it. I know a gal who will probably send you a sample or two. I actually have enough packets of this that I could send you a couple packets to try if you message me your address.

  11. I am having the sleeve. The bypass was a little too invasive for me. Good luck to you!!!
  12. Oh my gosh, I’ll be thinking about you! I’m sure everything will go great! I can’t wait to see and hear from you at 140!!! Amazing. I’m only 5’1”. Which surgery are you having? I’m having bypass. We’re going to be new and improved women (smile). You are almost there!!!!!

    February 2021 bypassers?

Has anyone experienced late post-op pain? My bypass was on 2/8/21, so I'm almost 5 weeks post-op. On Saturday, I started to experience a tight/burning-like pain on my left side (near that larger incision). I've spoken with my surgeon a couple of times to check-in and they said it's the internal sutures healing and could last 1-2 weeks! This is killing me! I want to get out and start walking and exercising but I feel like I can barely move! So frustrating! Everything else is going so well!

    December 2020

I had my surgery dec 2020. Horrible gout flair ups. Didn't know this was an added risk with surgery. When I called the surgeon's office they said I would have to speak with my primary. The primary was the one who cleared me for surgery so she was aware I had gastric bypass. Nothing was working for the gout and she put me on prednisone. Wish I would have questioned her decision but I figured she was the doctor. 4 days in on the prednisone I'm home alone at 4am and I started to hemmorage. Unlocked the front door and called 911. Long story short I was given 5 units of blood a couple units of plasma and was rushed to surgery. Called my Mom to say goodbye and to tell her I loved her. Took them 2 hours to stabilize the blood loss before they could start the surgery. That surgeon saved my life. Gout is still bad but I don't want to take any gout meds. Hoping it stabilizes soon.

    Any March Surgeries?

9 days down on the liquid diet! Honestly it hasn't been awful, but it's tough when I have to cook for my family. However, I am supposed to get the bypass, but now I want to switch to the sleeve. Any thoughts? Maybe I'm just panicking last minute lol

    Pre op Diet changes

I followed the guides in the packet I was given and after New Years Eve I started a 700-900 calorie diet. I was probably the only one who did. I’ve lost over 20 pounds and brought my BMI below 40. Yesterday I started the pre-op diet and it is HARD. Glad I didn’t do it cold turkey from my old high calorie diet, I’m struggling. I called out of work and slept all day. I couldn’t focus yesterday. Bypass Surgery is on March 22, 2021.
  18. I'm one month + post-op in the early days after the operation it was hard to eat food or drink water, now it's 35 days after the operation, I can now drink easily and eat upto to finish a 200 gram of grill salmon fish felt and few steamed cauliflower and carrot by chowing slowly. Is this normal,,, I don't feel stomach pain or another symptoms. Please share your experience [emoji120] Till date I have lost 22kg and the doctor is giving me a positive feedback [emoji5] Sent from my SM-N960F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Protein Shakes

All plans are different for everyone. You had the sleeve, and I had the bypass. I have noticed that different docs have very different plans. It is very confusing. I also noticed that it is very different for people around the world. It seems like the USA is very strict compared to other countries.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Good morning everyone. I pray all is well. I'm doing well, Just had one setback. I was in the hospital, had to have another surgery on yesterday. I was experiencing excruciating pain for about 4 weeks. I went the ER had a CAT scan they didn't see anything, the said I was having "muscle spasms.) so they gave me some pain medicine & nausea pills & sent me home. I still wasn't getting any relief. I couldn't eat anything; i felt like it was stuck at the top of my sternum. then I'd make myself throw up just to get relief. So i basically went back to the liquid diet to prevent that from happening. I called my surgeon was ordered to have a CAT scan with dye. Still everything looked normal. so he needed to go back into surgery so he could find something, an he did. when I had my bypass he removed a hiatal hernia. This time they removed a hidden which only be seen by going in. he also fixed some openings (spaces) he said because I've so much weight that sometimes happen. But aside from that, I feel amazing. I'm down 60 lbs. My coworkers have noticed a change in me. He put me back on a liquid diet, but little did he know I had already gotten back on that. I walk 6-7 miles a day, I got a gym membership, so yay! I Once I heal, I'll be back at it. I'm so proud of all of you. keep up the good work, We are blessed to be able to have this opportunity. I know a lot of people who wants this surgery, but their insurance won't approve it. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments.
  21. I had a lot of internal adhesions when they went in and did my bypass as it had been my 15th surgery but luckily they did not convert to open surgery. I heard it was close. It just meant a longer surgery for me. It also means a little more pain in recovery and little longer recovery but nothing that isn't manageable. If like mean you will also have a drain that you will go home with and have for a extended period compared to others, a nuisance but not bearable and then we have to be a little more careful about hernias and so I wore an abdominal binder longer then most as I had already had two previous repairs and didn't want this surgery cropping up another one. Overall, you will be fine and this surgery is so so worth it! It's nothing you can't handle. Just follow your doctor's order to a "T" and take care of yourself. We will pray for good results.

    Help!

well, people have died from tonsillectomies and wisdom tooth extraction, but then...how many people are we talking about? Your chances of dying are higher than THAT, but the mortality rate is 0.3% of dying from gastric bypass, and lower for the sleeve (I can't remember the rate for the sleeve, other than it's lower). So you have at least a 99.7% chance of NOT dying, which I'd say are excellent odds. I think a lot of people - esp oldsters like me - remember the old intestinal bypasses and other weight-reducing surgeries they did 30+ years ago, and yes, those WERE risky. But the surgeries they do now are very different - and they're really no more risky than having your gall bladder out. They're safer than hip replacement surgeries, which are done every day. just do your research. I was very surprised when I did - my perceptions of weight loss surgery were proven wrong, and I'm so glad I had it done.

    Surgery is Tomorrow.

I definitely can say i have reading so much on gastric sleeve and bypass. I started out wanting to do sleeve. But after so much research. I learned that bypass would benefit me better.
  24. It really depends on the person. I've seen many on here whose scars have basically disappeared in a couple months (looking at you @sillykitty & @mousecat88)...and others whose scars stick around for what seems like forever (looking at me, lol). I have had scars stick around for 5-6-7...10 years but all eventually heal enough so they are virtually invisible. Takes a while but they all get there eventually....my breast reduction scars from 2005 had just healed to near invisibility around 2017 (12 years!)...and then I got a breast lift, and I restarted the clock, lol. But will toot the steroid shots horn again though: I had shots in November and then again in January and wow, the difference is amazing. I'll try to post a pic later when I'm not so lazy....
