I am in the same boat with you. Dr said between weeks 3-5 it will stall out then pick back up. I’m 4 1/2 weeks post bypass and only lost 16 since surgery. I have lost inches and forgot to measure before I started my journey. But I did measure a week ago so I know going forward. I did take before pictures and current pictures and can tell a difference. That what I look at to keep me going so that I won’t worry about the scale. All this protein is helping to build muscle and it weighs more than fat.

Awful doctor experience

Thank you for sharing the info! I’ve also come to this conclusion as well. I think I was more leaning towards VSG because I know a few people who have had it, but now I do think that bypass would be a better option! Thank you for your response! -
What is your target caloric weight post-op (to lose, not to maintain)
Tomo replied to stardust82's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I'm not tall nor super active. I stayed around 800 to 900 calories to goal (about 6 to 7 months), been adding 100 calories every month or two till I get to maintenance. I lost 3 lbs. last month so I upped it another 100 at the beginning of this month. I calorie count (monthly average) and my diet consists of the required protein (mainly from seafood, legumes, soy, dairy) and then 6-7 servings of fruits/veg a day. -
Hello all and I’m so glad I stumbled upon this website while searching for protein supplements! I finally have my sleeve scheduled for October the 19th!! This Wednesday!! I so super excited and ready to begin this new chapter in my life! I’m sure many people here have encountered a lot of resistance and negativity from others regarding this choice, which makes having places like this helpful and encouraging. I appreciate seeing the positivity and sharing among everyone and am looking forward to having this forum to come back to during my new journey!!

What is your target caloric weight post-op (to lose, not to maintain)

Thanks so much for all the feedback everyone! It's super helpful. I know that I have not been making high enough caloric deficits so I am going to heed your advice and try to play this by ear/do some trial and error. I know now that my numbers were way off (too high!!) though. I think I will try to focus on 1000 calories max each day comprised of protein shakes, eggs, milk, salads with chicken, and lots of fruit this week and will see how it goes! -
Weight regain advise please

This is awesome advice, thank you! I think I do need to more dramatically cut my caloric intake for sure, as I am basically able to eat normal sized meals now. I've easily been eating 1800-2000 calories a day and not losing at 215 lbs. I think I am losing a bit now as I have been exercising a lot more now but even still, my progress has been quite slow. I am going to take your suggestion and try to do protein shakes for the next few days and see if that helps with my stall! Thank you! -
Another thing that has surprised me 5 days post-op is that a few minutes after I drink any of my favorite Fairlife Protein Shakes I get terrible diarrhea. I was expecting to be constipated for days after surgery and even stocked up on Miralax in preparation. But I'm having the complete opposite problem. I'm trying to drink more water to avoid dehydration from the constant bathroom trips 😵 I am going to have to try different protein brands to find one that doesn't cause such destruction LOL

When did your program give you the OK to take vitamins?
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to raspberrylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well. I had pre op blood work about 3 months prior to surgery, after the blood draw, I was told to begin Bariatric Fusion chewables, one in the morning and one at night. That's half of the normal post op bariatric dosing. In the beginning, they were gross and took a while to get used to and by the time surgery came around I was used to them and post op, I resumed them the day after I came home from the hospital and never had nausea. I feel like if I had never taken them pre op, and started them post op... there could've been some nausea and intolerance because they're not the most pleasant things to get used to. Just make sure to take them after a protein shake or food of some sort to prevent nausea the best you can. Best wishes! -
How to manage menstrual pain post surgery?
Nepenthe44 replied to Aliana Wood's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is not the case. NSAIDs don't increase the risk of ulcers because they go through your stomach and irritate it directly. They work, in part, by blocking an enzyme called Cox-1, which is required for your stomach to produce its protective mucus lining. Less lining, greater risk of ulcer. Injectable NSAIDs do this the same as oral ones. If you can't find any other alternatives that work, there are prescription NSAIDs called Cox-2 inhibitors which don't do that. They might be an option if you take them with another drug to reduce the risk of ulcer, but I haven't found any research in the long-term use of these meds after bariatric surgery. (As in, there's a single study where they used celecoxib peri-operatively for pain control was published in 2019 and that's the sum total of PubMed results.) -

I found out I was pregnant 5 months post op and after I had done a pouch reset period. I will say that I don’t believe the pouch reset actually resets the pouch, what it actually does it take you back to basics and allows you to re-harness good eating habits and reset your primary focus back to Protein. I was trying to get past the 200lb mark when I did it and it worked. It broke the stall and kept me on a downward motion. And now I’m pregnant. Good luck! You can do it!! I want to add, during the pouch reset and such, I was consuming less than 1,000 calories and ONLY focused on hitting those Protein goals. Aim for 60-80g Protein from low calorie liquid sources (to start) and you will have what you need in the short term. Now that I am pregnant, my nutritionist wants me eating 1500-1800 calories a day. I still focus on the protein first and then the calories. -
Pregnant 5 months after VSG surgery
LilaNicole20 replied to LettyVSG's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
So happy to hear from you Letty! Tomorrow starts my second trimester. Everything is going good so far. My weight has stabilized but I’m not gaining. My nutritionist had advised me that I need to increase my calories by like 700/day. Even with the increase in calories and Protein (averaging 80g/day) I’m keeping level. Did you have sleeve or bypass? I had bypass and I’m really really hoping that heartburn doesn’t return - ever! Hopefully the next 8 weeks go by fast for you! Sounds like you’re going to have a Christmas baby!! Yay!! -

the OP is a bypass patient - not sleeve. Not taking vitamins isn't an option for bypassers due to the malabsorption. -
Thanks for the responses. I finally got blood work done, everything is normal. However, the response about protein made me think that there might be a conditioner with protein in it. Not only did I find this, but also a shampoo and cream, all with protein. My hair is not perfect, but it is better than a few months ago. Perhaps it will even get better when the hairs that are more newly sprouted finally grow longer.

What is your target caloric weight post-op (to lose, not to maintain)
Arabesque replied to stardust82's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
While there are similarities there are also differences as we have different needs. I was barely eating 900 calories at goal at 6 months but some are eating 1200 within a couple of months. I was never given caloric goals. Just protein, water, & portion size recommendations. It’s best to discuss this with your dietician. They should consider things like, your age, height, build, gender, activity level, etc. -
I find the plant based protein shakes helps get things moving. They are usually pretty high in fiber.

Sounds like you are doing great. I had my meeting on Friday too. I am down 30, they want me to do South Beach again but they said I can do low carb as well. I started exercising today actually but I am having those fall asleep tired moments still too. I am averaging about 7-900 calories. Protein and vitamins are good but water is something I am still struggling with.

What is your target caloric weight post-op (to lose, not to maintain)
stardust82 posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Hi, Everyone - I've seen a few posts about how many calories people have been eating to maintain their goal weight but none about how much they have to eat to lose weight and was curious, as my surgeon never gave me a target caloric intake (I had my procedure in 2014). He just told me to eat 80-100 grams of protein a day and to focus on avoiding refined carbs. I was also wondering if the target caloric intake people are talking about is total consumption or absorbed amount. (For example, they eat/consume 2000 calories a day but only absorb 1200 of those consumed calories so their target is 1200 absorbed calories?) Thanks in advance for the insight!!! -
Maybe time to check in with the surgeon or at least a dietician to see what you should be eating and answer your questions. Protein is a must if you want to keep the muscles that you do have. Our bodies need energy and if the fat is gone then it will cannabalise your muscles. if your potassium is low then get on top of that. Bananas are a good source of potassium. Also take your vitamins daily. Not taking them will lead to more deficiencies down the track. Once those levels have tipped in the wrong direction it takes a while to reverse the damage.

Vitamins & Supplements?
DownsizieMe replied to DownsizieMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for this comprehensive reply, very helpful! I agree - the chewable taste terrible, just so bad! I do use bone broth protein powder w/ collagen at least once a day, not sure if I will take additonal, but I am so worried about my hair falling out and am really nervous about my skin. I agree that checking in w/ medical team is probably best on this one! Thanks! -

No I've never had nausea, from the surgery or the vitamins. Just make sure you take it after food or a protein shake. -
Vitamins & Supplements?

I'm not familiar with the Bariatric Fusion brand (I use Bariatric Advantage one-a-day with Iron), but based on a comparison I did, most of the bariatric vitamin brands are fairly similar. If you're doctor recommended Bariatric Fusion, you should be fine using it. I'll go out on a limb a bit here and state that the majority of us probably take one-a-day capsules. Why capsules? Lots of us have found that the chewables don't taste very good. Why one-a-day? because why take more pills than I have to? You can probably check the Bariatric Fusion website, but most of the time, the only real difference between the one-a-day versions and the multi-day ones is that the one a day is bigger. If you have issues taking large capsules, you might want to stick with multi-day. Separate vitamin D or B12 may or may not be needed. Your multivitamins already have D and B12 in them, so unless you're one of the folks that have a hard time absorbing those from you multivitamins, I don't think a separate supplement is needed. Best to check in with your medical team on that one, but most people only use it if their labs show a deficiency. You don't want an ADEK multivitamin. Those are designed specifically for DS patients. Collagen is fine to take. It's a good source of protein, though it is missing one essential amino acid. Nonetheless, if your other protein sources are complete proteins, I don't see anything wrong with adding collagen as well. -

Day 4 post op vsg over here. It hurts less today to walk and move around. I slept in my bed for the first night instead of the recliner. I started my morning off with half a fairlife protein shake (this next part is probably TMI, sorry 💩) and about 10 minutes later was struck with the most intense diarrhea of my life! I'm talking doubled over, whole body sweating, crying in stomach cramp agony. It was my first post-op bowel movement, and may have been worse because I also had my gallbladder removed. It was followed by an emotional breakdown where I just sat and cried and questioned every choice that led me to this moment. I don't regret having WLS, but I am having a difficult time reminding myself that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. A little tip I found (if your new stomach can tolerate cold liquid) is to freeze gatorade zero into popsicles! I ordered 4oz popsicle molds on Amazon and find it much easier to suck on a popsicle than sip 4oz right now. -
I use Baritastic and agree with another poster that since it is designed for toward bariatric patients it works very well for my needs, tracking important markers like protein, calcium, water, carbs, fat. It is very easy to scan the barcodes of different foods like protein shakes, applesauce, tomato soup, yogurt, etc. and keeps track of your weight lost before and since surgery, as well as inches lost. There's a section for daily notes, reminders, a timer for eating (20 minutes to chew, chew, chew!), drinking (there are two warnings for drinking: don't eat yet! and don't drink yet!). So, the way it is tailored for bariatric patients is what makes this app so great. Good luck with whatever you choose to use, I am sure they are all great!

Don't feel discouraged. You're doing just fine. Fluctuating 2-even 5 lbs a day is normal at any weight. This has to do with water weight, food etc. It's best to weigh yourself first thing in the morning, before food or drink and most importantly only ONCE per week. You're still healing. This was a big surgery. But most of all, Youre on track! Have you ever lost 8 to 10 lbs in one week before this? be proud! If you obsess over the scale it will mess with your head. Do not compare any if your progress to other people, our journeys are different right down to our surgeon guidelines and food phases. For portion sizes, your body will tell you if youre pushing yourself too much. Start small and work your way up. Less is more right now, protein shakes are incredibly important to not lose muscle mass. -
Hey folks! I am new here but just had my surgery on 10/3 and I'm STRUGGLING! I really misunderstood portions because I'm in the stage 2 diet and I know we can incorporate cottage cheese and ricotta. I fucked that one up and I think I've been drinking soups up to 6oz. It's very frustrating because I've been trying to do everything right. I have the food scale, a cup I use to measure liquids (its a glass thats used for measuring espresso, up to 4oz). Is anyone having trouble figuring out portions? I think I'm just so anxious about it I just feel like I don't know what I'm doing. I've gone back to protein shakes. I'm afraid of moving on to solids. I have also had the most difficult time figuring out when I'm hungry and when I'm full. I had pretty intense mental hunger which made me incredibly miserable. My stomach hurts from a drop. This sucks.... feeling discouraged. The scale is very confusing right now. I'm at day 12 and I was 299 and now I'm anywhere from 288-290 because it fluctuates so much. I think I've done it all wrong and want to just hide under my sheets!
