Nervous about Sleeve to RNY revision
Karen B45 replied to SleeveandRNYchica's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am a sleeve to bypass revision as well. My surgery was last Wednesday, Sept. 23 and my sleeve was in March 2012. I had no problems with the sleeve, and no complications. My sister did the same thing, sleeve and then revision to bypass. She warned me that the recovery for the bypass is harder, and to be honest, I have to say she was probably right. The bypass is more major surgery in that they take something and reroute it. I mean I know that's obvious but.....it does make a difference. Having said that, I havne't had any complications, and I am not at all regretting having it done. There are a lot of things that are the same, the tiredness, etc. I think you will do great, and the complications are just such a small percentage. My surgeon told me afterwards that he was expecting it to be much more difficult than it was, which was nice to hear. The surgery did take about three and a half hours. I also am off work for two weeks, including the surgery. I still feel like Ike I just had major surgery, but I am sure I will be ready to go back in a week. Although most people do say take another week off if you can. The other thing I have noticed....definitely still using my pain medication, but that is more for my incisions than anything. It just seems odd to me that I got on a flight home from Mexico two days after my last surgery, I totally cannot imagine doing that this time. It's just a different recovery. I don't know if that helps? But that has been my experience so far. I think you had messaged me previously, so if you would like to chat more, just let me know. -
Nervous about Sleeve to RNY revision

I got sleeved 1 1/2 ago and read really want a revision I'm really not sure what to tell my doc -
hi janie & everyone. i just signed up yesterday. this is my first time to get on anything like this although i've been banded over two years. i lost 95 lbs in 15 months & my life has definitely changed. size 20 - size 8.....i now have 3.1 cc's in my band but don't believe i would ever have another one. food gets pretty limited when you have this much in your band. i'm still fighting my way through all the emotional eating habits that i have owned for 49 years, so that in itself has been a struggle for me. i had my band done in canon city. dr's wagner/brown were the first surgeon's in colorado to do the band, & i thought this is my last chance at being thin. i never did any research or even considered the gastric bypass. i just did it we started a support grp here & i have made a lot of good friends. we cheer each other and struggle together but we are all bonded together. we know and understand all the stuff. its so great to get into this group though. thanks for asking about me.....

Emergency surgery to remove the band at five months
WASaBubbleButt replied to DontSignUp's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It's not really wise to go into surgery thinking if this doesn't work, you'll revise to something else. Revisions carry a GREAT deal more risk than working on a virgin stomach. Example, leaks carry a 3x greater risk as a revision vs. 1st choice surgery. The key is to find the right surgery type for you the FIRST time. Not to choose the easy surgery the first time and hope for the best. -
What questions should I ask my doctor during my consult?
JWL08 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am considering a revision from the band to bypass. I know little about the process, and bypass in general. I don't know if my insurance will cover it, and right now I am in that awful catch 22 of weighing too little for surgery but too much to have a healthy lifestyle, so there are a lot of ifs there. Assuming all the planets align though, what questions did you have for your doctor? My family is pretty much convinced bypass means I am going to die, so I'd like to calm their fears. Thanks! -
Strange thing I say... (How about you?)
alwaysvegas replied to Mrs.RRn's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
A selection of quotes I've actually said that are indeed strange: "No, they did not remove my entire stomach. Just most of it." "No, I didn't have the bypass. I had the less complicated weight loss surgery." As if I could perform it myself or something. "No, I'm not starving. I feel great!" "I disagree. I eat more than a squirrel." "Yes, I used to be quite large." Takes out driver's license to prove it. Why would someone lie about being fat? food arrives at the table. "Can I get a to-go box, please?" "Yes, I really am full. I know I'm taking most of it to go." "No, I didn't just eat before coming to the restaurant." "Yes, bowel movements still work the same way." "Yes, I miss my manboobs." OK, the last one I never said. -
Emergency surgery to remove the band at five months
WASaBubbleButt replied to DontSignUp's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
No surgery type is right for everyone. Some are good to go with restriction only, some need malabsorptive too. There is not a thing in the world wrong with either one. It is your job to see what YOU need. We all have different issues. Me... I just like to eat. I'm a grazer, I like high fat, high carb foods and lots of it. For me restriction alone is most effective. I suck at taking Vitamins and such... I'd probably die of malnutrition with bypass because I know me and I would never take the required vitamins. I found the surgery type right for me. You need to do the same, you need to find what is right for you. Yes and no... the sleeve is the first part of DS. With DS the sleeve is typically made larger, with a stand alone procedure the sleeve is made smaller. I can eat 2oz of solid Protein, if I had DS my sleeve would hold double what I can eat. -
Prospective band to sleeve
WASaBubbleButt replied to Bornagainbabe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Welcome, Helen! I am a revision from band to sleeve and I can't tell you how much better the sleeve is. I was prepared for "hard" when everyone kept telling me how hard the band is. I thought they meant hard work and dealing with head issues. I had no idea the kind of hard it would be. I did not realizze the constant band problems was the hard part. Puking, getting stuck, restriction issues, reflux, foaming, sliming... I had no idea. After banding I was a little gun shy about another WLS, I was scared to death what I was experiencing with the band was what WLS is all about. It became a way of life. I was afraid that the sleeve would make my problems permanent. That scared the heck out of me. I finally decided that I did not want to be fat more than I was afraid of complications and such. Turns out, it's the best thing I have ever done. I just wish I would have done the sleeve the first time around, it would have saved me a ton of money. ;o) Don't let a risk of a leak scare you away from sleeves. It's possible, but the risk of being fat is greater than the risk of a leak. They are rare. Since this will be a revision for you I would suggest you make sure you go to a true revision surgeon. Not just any surgeon but a revision surgeon. I will tell you that a risk for leaks, perforation, and bleeding are three fold for revisions vs. working on a virgin stomach. But if you go to someone who has done a ton of revisions you stand the best odds for a safe surgery. Welcome to the forum! -

Band To Sleeve Revision 11/26!

Anyone else on this day? -
I had a port revision on Monday with 1cc in a 4cc band. My surgeon added 1cc, so now I'm half full. I could probley get .5cc more and I know she will want to add atleast that much, but I don't want to. You see, I have severe anxtiey disorder, which tightens and sometimes even closes the opening in the band for me to the point where I can't even have a little Water and I'm vommiting all the time when I'm nervous. The holiday's are comming and I know this will be really stressful for me. And if I get tightened, I'll be sick all the time, but if I don't get tightened, I might not lose any weight. I promise not to overeat and gain, but when I go back to my Doc and I haven't lost, I feel like I'm being repramanded.:cry My Doc is doing this for free because of insurance problems. I'm really shy and I know I would have a hard time saying no to some one who's been so nice to me. What should I say to her exactly? A mini script would help alot. Thanks

Hi, Has anyone heard of doctors doing a lapband on anyone who has had a gastric bypass? I came across an ad for it in Mexico. I was thinking it would be kinda hard because of not much stomach left. I have a band-3 weeks into it. But i have an aunt and cousin who have had a bypass and I'm curious! Any info out there?? Thanks, Laurie

Judy, people have band to sleeve revisions all the time who have not yet regained all their weight. But the band becomes a problem and they need to remove it...and they know that if they simply remove that and do nothing else the weight will come back on in a hurry due to the change in metabolism. In those cases I'm all for it. On the other hand, you've got a young 20 something who is 15 pounds overweight and doesn't want to have to fight weight problems in the future so she has WLS...I'm not sure I support that. Because as you say, she still will have to do the same things to keep the weight off in the future regardless of whether or not she has the surgery. I think the surgery is great for people who already have the weight and are having trouble getting it off. The sleeve gives you a chance to lose it but you have to do the work to keep it off. For people who simply see the weight gain as inevitable, and want to prevent obsesity related problems in the future....I truly believe those people can prevent those issues with the same attention to health and nutrition without having surgery if they commit before the weight gain has gotten out of control.... UNLESS...there are diagnosed, underlying medical conditions which will lead to obesity regardless.....like disorders of the thyroid. Ought these people have WLS as a preventative measure when they know obesity is coming regardless of what they do? I don't know enough about thyroid disorders to know how likely that scenario is, but I'm willing to at least consider the possibility in these cirucumstances.

Mixed emotions

I have a consult appt Feb 2 and would like to know why and how any of you decided on lapband vs bypass. I know the pros and cons of both, my doctor prefers bypass, have been on the internet finding info but that makes me more confused. HELP!!! -
Hi again Glenda. As far as I am aware from what Dr Kennedy said it's him performing my operation and he recommended bypass over lapband. He said bypass costs £8,000 and lapband costs about £6,000. He told me the band would be too easy to cheat with plus you have better losses with bypass. I have another appt on 28th April and I will be asking him about dr clements and all that. Can I ask why you would travel to England and pay to have op when you can have it here and pay? I was hoping to be able to speak to other patients of his and was told he has noone's contact numbers. :tongue_smilie: Hmm, it's interesting you were also recommended the bypass, I wonder are they pushing people to have the more expensive op? I more or less asked him that and he said he would rather fit a band cos it's quicker. Also I don't think he does the bypass through keyhole surgery which I would prefer because wounds heal quicker though the op can take about 5 hours as opposed to 90 mins.

I looked into lap-band here but because my BMI is under 40 insurance won't cover it, so am seriously considering going to Mexico or Costa Rica. I am concerned about complications and getting follow up care/fills after the surgery. Please share your experiences with follow up back in the US after foreign surgery - or should I do gastric bypass instead?

Today is exactly one month since I had WLS. I don't normally weigh in mid week (I weigh in and do my measurements on Monday mornings) but since it has been a month since my surgery I weighed myself. I started my journey at my all time heaviest 280lbs. During the preop diet I lost 13lbs so on the morning of my surgery I was 267lbs. Today I weighed in at 240.2lbs. I am down 40lbs!!!!!! I'm finding my way through the new diet and feeling more confident by the day!

Sleeve Vs Bypass
Sleeved&Hopeful replied to READY TO LOSE IT's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Just wanted to chime in here! Bypass patients "typically" lose faster and a bit more excess weight. If you have 100 lbs to lose, they might lose 10 lbs more than you. I agree that it's not worth the side effects. If you have more than 250-300 lbs to lose then my suggestion would be to get the duodenal switch over the gastric bypass. It's the "sleeve" plus some malabsorption that actually FOREVER malabsorbs calories unlike the bypass that only malabsorbs calories a couple of years. However, the duodenal switch is high maintenance and you have to take a lot of Vitamins and get to the doctor probably at least every 3-6 months to make sure your vitamins are in place. However, there is one guy, who lost 350 lbs with just the sleeve alone. So people who are super super morbidly obese can actually get to a healthy BMI with some serious commitment even with the sleeve. -

Frustr8 replied to JessieGrace319's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My favorites, Premiere Protein peach and cream, some people think it taste fakey but not me, I think it tastes like the candy circus peanuts, and I loved them critters when I was a little Frustr8. Muscle Milk, strawberry, blueberry Greek yogurt , the strawberry - banana you would hate, I do eat bananas but I didn't like it either, my only other Premiere Protein was the caramel, I can't have chocolate and I feel pretty much about vanilla shakes as you do bananas, who wants thick, white and tasteless.? Adkins are not as good--, sorry I know you were an Adkins baby. DO NOT BUY WALMART EQUATE! They are cheaper, but they taste of over processed evaporated milk, leave a vile aftertaste, poured the remainder in a old pie plate for the outdoor cats and other animals and it sat and soured. A couple soy based I found okay. I just got a box from Bariatric Pal store with other flavors to mix with skim milk, anxious to try the cheesecake, orange creamsicle and their 🍓 strawberry delight. See I am 3 weeks pist, my surgeon swiches many of his Bypassers to stage 3 sooner but Precious Pouch and I am going sliwer, I'm staying level 2 until October 9th at my next surgeon visit. That way she doesn't upchuck, I'm happier and I still keep looking. 18 pounds down since surgery, best weight loss I have had since having a baby. Dropped 25-30 pounds with each one, but pain, muss, fuss and bother to do that! -
Good Luck! I had a band to sleeve revision and was dry-heaving for 3 days, had to sleep upright. The top of my stomach had completely swollen shut where my band was removed. It was rough, but I wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING! You'll get through this in no time!! & while your in their care, ask for whatever you can get! lol

Sleeve Vs Bypass
lisa2job replied to READY TO LOSE IT's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I am still rather new but thought i would chime in since I also researched this..... my research of the two showed you would only loose overall10% more weight with the bypass , in the big skeme of things that is not much weight depending on what you started with. I started at300 so that is 30 lbs more I would loose iwth a bypass. not worth all the side effects... my sister got the by pass and she is two weeks ahead of me so far we are loosing wieght at the same pace..... i keep thinking she is gonna pass me by but has not yet.... so happy I did the sleeve and dont have her issues.... again just my thoughts I am almost 2 months out 63 lbs down... she is 2.5 months out and down 75 -
It has been 6 months since my VSG.... And I still LOVE my sleeve. Aside from marrying my husband, this is the best thing I've ever done. No regrets... I'm not at all saying its easy. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. The emotional stuff is hard. I look in the mirror and cry sometimes, but the good outweighs the bad completely. I still write down everything I eat. Protein first. I still (and plan to forever) stay away from potatoes, bread, Pasta, and rice. I try my best to take in enough Fluid (notice I said TRY). I still use Protein shakes and bars as Meal Replacements from time to time-- but truth is, I really enjoy them. I exercise 1-2 hours most days a week- walking, jogging, weights, crunches, squats, BodyFlow classes (my new fav), whatever-- but tonight is my first belly dancing class. Wow, never would've done that before! As of this week I am 92 lbs down and officially "overweight!" I have 8 lbs until I meet my original goal of 100 lbs GONE! (But I'll probably revise and lower that goal). I can't explain how much I truly love this lifestyle-- the workouts, the food choices, the energy... Just feeling so good. Oh , and the sex hehe, sorry. Info: Age: 26 Ht: 5 ft (4' 11.5") Sleeved on 6/11/2013 Highest weight: 245 Surgery weight: 240 Current weight: 148 Largest size in my closet; 24. Most days I fit a 20-22. Currently size 12.

One of the surgeons in the clinic I am using is adamant that they are seeing more issues with weight regain after sleeve compared to bypass. I have not been able to find any research to back this up. Any help would be appreciated as I have my mind wrapped up in the sleeve surgery not the bypass. Thanks in advance

Ok guys, I'm pretty much a newbie to the website, only joined a few weeks ago. I got my surgery date last week. It's September 6th, three weeks from today. I gotta admit, I'm getting nervous. I had Lap Band surgery four years ago (it failed, miserably) so this is a revision. It's the fact that they'll be cutting out 90% of my stomach that's freaking me out. Yeah, I know that's what I signed up for, it's just the procedure itself that's making me nervous. I had a client who had bypass surgery a few years back and when they went to make the connections her stomach/intestinal tissue was so fragile they could barely reconnect. She had tons of problems with leaks and almost died. So while my logical mind tells me that was a very freak event, my emotions are playing hell with me. I could really use some encouraging words from some of you guys who have been through this. Thanks!

Prospective band to sleeve
Bornagainbabe replied to Bornagainbabe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How long did you have your band for? I am really lucky as the NHS has agreed to fund my sleeve surgery which neither me or my surgeon was expecting. I originally paid for my band privately, lost enough weight to have the hernia surgery and now because of the slippage they have agreed to pay for the revision surgery! They must have considered lots of issues with me as patients now have to have a BMI of 50+ before they are even considered for surgery on the NHS in the UK. I am very lucky. I am not surprised that a lot of people are going for this revision surgery though as it seems to be a common story hearing peple complain of slippage, reflux, erosion etc. Will be glad to have my band out once and for all...
