Anyone for October 2020?
Lovely2020 replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I stated walking for 2-3 minutes the same day. Around my house and in the drive way, around my yard. Now I am up to walking 5-10 minutes outside and I walked for 15 minutes in my neighborhood one day. I am certainly not walking as fast -
My surgery is scheduled for 10/27/20 and I got Flu vax and Tdap yesterday. But always err on the side of caution and ask your surgeon.

Today is day 2 of my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I'm to have four shakes per day. To be honest, I'm friggin hungry. And I'm consumed with thoughts of food. My surgery is on 10/26. I figured this would be the hardest part, but man it sucks. Anyone else out there? Sent from my Pixel 2 using BariatricPal mobile app

Hit a pretty awesome goal. When I started out in July of 2019 and decided to have WLS, I weighed 427 lbs. My last weekly weigh in I was 212.2. That means I am officially half the person I used to be. On another note, I am now officially overweight! You might ask why that is a good thing. I have spent almost all of my adult life with a BMI that put me in the obese category, but now with my weight loss my BMI is 29.6 which is considered overweight. When I started out my BMI was 60. My surgeon required me to get my BMI to 50 before the surgery so I lost 92 lbs between July 2019 and January 2020 and my BMI was about 48 at the time of my surgery. After surgery I have lost another 123 lbs. No secret, just follow your plan. Eat you protein first, meet your daily protein goals, exercise, exercise, exercise. I am doing a minimum of 30 minutes 5 days a week and usually shooting for 60 minutes daily of intense exercise. My only regret is that I didn't have WLS years earlier.

GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +
BriarRose replied to Frustr8's topic in The Gals' Room
There are some folks who stop by here occasionally ! Congratulations on your surgery and weight loss. I am 10 years out. Started at 54 years old and 320 ( probably higher at highest ) Had surgery at about 300 lbs. I had the surgery for the same reason, but have not had knee replacement. Wish I could say it cured my knees, but it didn't - but I move so much better and have less pain. No more do I need Rx for knee pain, but do use Advil/naproxin when needed. And with surgeon knowledge of taking them. I kept the majority of wt off, but had regain over the last 6 years.... of 45 pounds.... lost my brother and then my dad, a messy divorce, and life.... but took 14 months to lose the 45 pounds - 10 years out, and although I have added back more calories and carbs to keep my weight stable - I am continuing to lose a bit of weight still. So your new tool will continue to help you on your journey for years to come. I know you will do well - eat lots of protein and keep the veggies and fruit super fresh !!! It helps !!! -
1 year after gastric sleeve problems...
Jeri Lynn replied to Anna N.'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes, a tilt test which most cardiologist’s office are able to do. You can do orthostatic vitals. Take blood pressure and pulse lying down. Sit up wait 5 minutes and take them again. Then stand for 10 minutes without walking and take them again. You are looking for an increase in heart rate of 30 beats per minute or a significant drop or rise in blood pressure. I have the Hyperadrenergic type and my blood pressure goes up with positional changes from lying to upright. Have you had a chance to google orthostatic intolerance after Bariatric surgery? -
Anyone else have trouble keeping to the pre-op diet?
The Greater Fool replied to SAS11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, if someone tells you what you are doing is inappropriate and not to your benefit and you may regret your choices, it is true. You want to think someone is being a jerk for telling you this, it's on you, not them. By the way, what is said in the first sentence is true, so I am a jerk. I've been called a jerk before so you may join good company here. I stuck completely and without flaw to my pre-op diet. My Doc was clear that if I didn't hit the required loss of 10 more pounds he would cancel my surgery. I was scared straight. Well, except for those one or five, well ten, or so, times I didn't. I gained 7 pounds. I was scared I was screwed right up until I talked to Doc before being wheeled in to surgery. If Doc weren't using my surgery as a teaching opportunity I'm sure he would have cancelled. I lucked out. Having said this, don't do what I did. Or at least as bad. It's not worth the terror. Do your honest best. Good luck. Tek -
Anyone for October 2020?
Glowup Jess replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Morning everyone I had my sleeve yesterday 10/13 and I’m currently in hospital. Gassy and nauseated are my main symptoms . Besides that my pain is not as bad just being managed. I have to walk around today. I couldn’t do it last night . -
+1 More anecdotal evidence: I looked positively skeletal (esp my face and neck) when I finished weight loss phase. Months later, I looked much more filled in (despite the fact that I even weighed 10+ lbs less later on). I suspect it was the introduction of some carbs back into my diet....

Firstly, congratulations are your weight loss. So wonderful. Apologies to those who love them, but protein shakes & powders are awful. I just couldn’t tolerate them at all. But, if you eat a balanced diet & include protein in every meal, you shouldn’t need protein powders or shakes. Plus, you get lots of other necessary nutrients eating real food. I aim for 50g a day based on my weight. (Some guideline recommend 0.8/kg, others 1g & others recommend 1.2g if you’re older or very physically active.) I get in about 10g at breakfast, 10-15g at lunch, 15+g afternoon snack (yogurt), 15-20g for dinner. If it’s a low day, may be I missed a meal or snack, or wasn’t hungry, I’ll have a protein bar for a late supper or some chia pudding. My dietician suggested adding skin milk powder to my milk to boost my protein & calories. I find it makes the milk taste sweeter, which I don’t like, but it’s fine for when I make chia pudding. (I whisk a big heaped soup spoon of milk powder in a cup of milk.) You might like to try that too instead of protein powders. I did lose more than I intended when I was trying to find my sweet spot to successfully maintain. It doesn’t take much for me to lose or gain so I’m very routine with what & when I eat. My doctors have suggested I put on a couple of kgs, but as that’s likely to happen over the next year or so, I’d rather not put weight on now & more again later. Plus, I actually have quite a small frame (now all the weight is gone). I’m really happy with my weight & size as it is. Catwoman7 is right. Many of us who do manage to lose 100% of our weight can look almost ‘too thin’ at first (you get told this a lot by well meaning family & friends - grrrr) but everything does settle again in time. Adding a few good multi/whole grain carbs to your diet in maintenance helps a lot. I think as you, & others, get used to your new body shape & size, you start to really see yourself as who you are now & the change doesn’t seem as extreme.

a lot of us who end up losing 100% of our excess weight look emaciated in year 2, but we don't by..or sometime during...year 3. Fat is redistributed a bit so you don't look as "drawn", and also, most people seem to have a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting bottom. So I wouldn't purposely try to gain weight now - just try to stabilize. my weight loss just kind of stopped on its own at about 20 months out - but I started out heavier than you did.

I am glad the responses helped. I think a lot of us had the same thoughts and worries. Food was a comfort and thinking of taking that away saddened and scared me, but your mindset really does change. I never thought mine would, but it did. Also during the surgery much of the "hunger hormone" called ghrelin is cut away, which helps with the cravings. I will say for the first few weeks after the surgery - I had phantom like cravings.. like my mind hadn't "caught" up to what was going on with my stomach. Even though I wasn't even close to hungry - I had these cravings, but that went away after a few weeks. It was bizarre, but I've read it is normal with some people. I had never been overweight until the last 8 years either. I was always tiny... sometimes TOO tiny, then it seemed like out of nowhere - I started gaining about 5-10 lbs each year and before I knew it - I was 192 lbs. It scared me. It definitely was food addiction - I just didn't realize it. I hope you decide to go through with the surgery, because it has been such an incredible thing for my life and health, but again - only you can determine whether you want it.

I know you're right, anxiety is something I deal with almost daily. I am glad I was able to get in on 11/10 though. Thanks, this makes me feel much better! -
1.) you will still be able to enjoy food, just not in large quantities anymore. I do enjoy a drink but like you, i don't do anything else. When we go out to eat, my husband and i usually just split something or do appetizers. The lapband was more restrictive with what foods.....Sleeve is just the amount. Instead of eating a whole steak, i only eat 2-4 oz.... same thing with most everything else. 2.) i wasn't over weight till my 30ies.... all my life i was thin.... then my body just started to change and i put on over 100lbs. my HW was 232. Lapband changed all that. I got and stayed at 143lbs for yearsssss. In 2017 i had to have a removal due to a slip. I put back 30.5lbs. I got sleeved 8/28/19 and today i sit at 120lbs... (5'2"). WLS was/is the only thing that has worked for me..... sleeve cost me 14k... worth every penny. 3.) No, WLS will not help with sugar cravings. You will have to control that on your own. best of luck.....

Anyone November 2020
1000islandgirl replied to mgilbert's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hiya! My surgery is November 10th and I started my journey in August of 2019. I can't believe it's (surgery) is finally getting close! I start my liquid diet 3 weeks prior to surgery so on October 19th. I'm prepped and ready to go. It has been an extensive process to get to this point. I'm in Canada so things are a bit different here than in the states. I wish you the best of luck on your journey! -
Thank you. I'm the queen of research. I research everything! I've been on the fence about surgery for about 2 years now. I actually had my initial consultation in February 2019 but chickened out so I've done tons of research prior to my 1st appointment but even so I'm sure there is always room to learn more. Hence the reason I joined this board. I look forward to the journey.

Undecided - Newbie - figuring my way around
Blue.ring.key posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello, all the way from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. My name is Yumna and I'm Canadian/Pakistani. Living in UAE since 2008. I've been obese my entire life. Thank you, mama and Papa genes! I have the same story as all of you in my position. Did 100000s of diets, activities, prepared food subscription, spent thousands of dollars on things that just DIDNT WORK! I also suffer from PCOS and it's not been easy! I'm honestly so tired of trying and now that I am married (since 2019 January) I want to start a family. My PCOS is the number 1 reason why I've resulted in looking into gastric surgery, I knew the option was always there but to be honest I never felt uneasy in my skin. Growing up chubby made me comfortable with who I am. But now that I had a miscarriage and want to start a family. All i am seeing at the end of this dark tunnel is another thousands of dollars, needles, and suffering for years to try to grow a family. JUST BECAUSE OF PCOS AND OBESITY! Ahh, my frustration now is beyond I've ever been with my weight and PCOS. So here I am looking through this forum and trying my best to get all the information i can for 1. Gastric mini bypass 2. Gastric sleeve These two are what I'm stuck between, I've visited a very qualified surgeon here in UAE - he has recommended the mini gastric. however, the idea that not only will my stomach be sliced but also my intestine is scaring me. So i ask you gastric sleeve and bypass recoveries to tell me which option is best and why. When you were deciding why did you choose what you did and how has it helped you and failed you throughout the years post-surgery, I want to know the good the bad, and the ugly! I would like to make a decision in the coming 2 weeks and set my mind up. Till then ill continue to go through the millions of threads here! If you've read this far, THANK YOU! 😍- 15 replies

I’d never heard that. I know that rapid weight loss can effect the gallbladder and many people need gallbladder removal for that reason. But I’ve never heard of it causing elevated liver enzymes. I’m sure it’s one of many risks involved in surgery but I would think it still needs monitoring. Especially when symptomatic. I did have my gallbladder removed during my gastric bypass surgery. Due to what turned out to be chronic inflammation. But I’m pretty sure my liver levels in previous tests were ok. I’m waiting to hear from my primary care physician about getting more bloodwork done to see what the situation is. My ferritin was very low even though my iron was fairly normal range. Slight elevation of my liver enzymes before maybe, but then a drastic spike. Normal is 6-29 I’ve had it go from 9 to 13 in 2018 my gastric bypass was April 2019. I think May after surgery it was 10. But then a year later May 2020 it tested at 43. Strange. I’m not necessarily worried. But with my other symptoms I’d like to know. And I’m having a lot of pain. The next test July it was 29 but I’d had two blood transfusions ... so of course my blood labs were altered by that so I need a new baseline bloodwork done. Interesting that my ferritin was only 7 in a range of 16-232 after those transfusions it was 39.
