gaining weight on soft foods
brittanylau replied to lkingglassalice's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was like this from the beginning of my 3rd week until a couple days when I got into my 6th week! It's super frustrating but it's just a dreaded stall I realized everyone hits. But I can assure you it's Water weight, you have to eat ALOT more than you're able to right now to gain 2 lbs of fat. So no worries, just stick to your plan, get in your Protein and liquids and eventually it will fall off. Trust me, I know how frustrating it can be to see you're doing nothing wrong! But it's just your body adjusting to the major weightloss. Good luck!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Too much protein and water?
bmbrush413 replied to jgarnick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's great! I struggled to get in my 60g of protein the first few weeks, and still struggle with my liquids almost 8 weeks out... -
I'm 4 days post op and got in 3 protein shakes for a total of 84g protein and drank about 50oz water. Seems like too much according to what others have posted. Should I be concerned?

Back to regular food (CHOPPED)
Torriluv87 replied to BrownEyedBeauty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not gonna lie im almost 5 months out and i have liquid days. Not because I'm trying so hard to lose weight but sometimes i just can't do solids. Sometimes i feel tight early and can only do Water, shakes and tea. So I'll do that and my next meal I'll do dense Protein. And sometimes i can't finish the same amount as i did the day before but it's ok. Part of the process i guess. Im usually ok just up my shakes for that day and drink more water. I don't push it. Next day i get back into it best i can. Just gotta go with the flow. But still do what you need to do for you. I try to eat when im hungry unless that takes too long. If im not thinking about it ill completely forget or neglect the fact i need to eat. Sometimes i just really don't feel like eating. When that happens if im not actively hungry I'll wait it out a bit. If i start to feel sick i know i waited too long and will drink a bottle of water before my next meal to start my system. It just feels better, like I've woken my system to receive food. If i don't its hard to get much anything in and it isn't comfortable for my stomach. -
Feeling hungry all the time...
M579 replied to ashleyrowles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon had me on prevacid twice a day. I asked if I could go back on my Nexium which is working better for me. I had that empty burning feeling too and it was heartburn related I think. I can't say I am hungry all of the time but I do think about food more than I wish I did. I was always a grazer and I think it is just ingrained to constantly have something to eat. I am trying to work through that though and only do the mealtimes for anything other than liquid Protein type stuff. And while I applaud you on the only weighing once a week ( that is what I should do too), it would drive me crazy not to know what was happening day to day! I am three weeks out as of yesterday myself. Are you getting in your Water. I am making a much more concerted effort to get close to the 64 oz. -
I had my sleeve on June 23rd. A few days ago I weighed in at 235.7, but today I was 240. Is this normal? I have been drinking 2 protein shakes and my three 4 oz meals. I am even getting my liquids down. Yesterday was two weeks! Advice anyone?

Fainting?!?!?
victoryinJesus53 replied to MKambalimath's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I recently learned that sleveers can only take in 3 oz per meal I know from experience stated above you need to drink your protein shakes in order intensify your protein intake. -
Well I am approaching 1 yr post surgery and at a standstill for a while now of 45 pounds. I had some recent setbacks and had to have a few unfills. I now have a 14 cc band with approx. 5cc's in it. I am still following all the "rules" seperating liquids and solids, slow fairly small meals, healthier choices, very little snacking and when I do it's fruit, protein first etc etc. Going to the gym 4 nights a week a mile on the tredmill, 2 miles on the bike and arm weights.. My weight hasn't moved in almost 3 months now... nothing looks or feels any better. I am starting to wonder if I shouldn't try 6 small meals instead of 3. A women at work who was banded in March is doing that and it's just falling off of her

Become a vegetarian maybe?
Afrikanaaa replied to nomorechubbybutt63's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a vegan, and have been for 2+ years, and haven't had dairy for even longer than that. Going into surgery my nutritionist advised that I'd probably have to use whey sources for Protein because there's no other way I'd be able to get the adequate amount of without exceeding my liquid goal but my body still isn't used to it. Although it's been a little over 3 weeks (pre & post-op), my body is fighting the whey. ???? And post-op I'll definitely have to go veggie for protein. -
If it's liquid, it's all the same and counts as drinking...water, juice, protein shakes, coffee, tea....

Could kiss the 200 protein drinks recipe person
deltadawn5683 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't remember where I got the recipes from on this site. I have been playing around with them and have two favorites in two days. I never thought I would like anything with whey in it but they are great!!! At least two of them are...we'll have wait and see on others. I am very picky so I planned on holding my nose while drinking---but no need. Thanks again to everyone who put them together!!! -
Can you have extract (i.e. vanilla) directly post-op?
Iluvharleys replied to peace101's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I used it some flavoring my protein drinks. It didn't hurt me, but I always say when in doubt ask your doctor's office. -
Chocolate Royale Slimfast powder, skim milk, crushed ice in a blender, and sometimes one or more of the following: malted milk powder (I like the taste) Benefiber (for obvious reasons) Knox bone and joint powder (extra protein) powdered fat-free milk (also extra protein) I hate regular protein shakes, or at least all of them that I have tried thus far. Like a lot of Bandsters, I have trouble with solids in the AM.

Become a vegetarian maybe?

I'm not a fan of many protein sources myself. I'm not vegetarian, but I have been eating a lot of vegetarian meals lately (I haven't had surgery). Check out A Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner. He's a bariatric surgeon who is really into nutrition and is very vegan friendly. You should get some good ideas there about what to eat. Also, his YouTube videos are fantastic. -
Become a vegetarian maybe?
foodfighter78 replied to nomorechubbybutt63's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I struggle to eat meats or fish or eggs, so I'm turning to a vegetarian diet. I'm 11 months out and I eat about 50/60 gr of protein. Lots of nuts, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cheese, tofu, different kinds of beans. I had a run bypass -
1 month out and aggravated...
greyrider replied to JAnnette's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi JAnnette!!! I remember feeling that way too. Had surg. in June of 12.....first couple of months was really hard because of lack of options.....Shortly afterwards I was able to start eating more things and as long as I focused on Proteins and veggies I was good to go. I just got used to having lots of leftovers and actually cooking for two people. One of the things that has really helped me was learning to focus on stopping eating when I started to feel full then getting my food off the table so I didnt "pick" at it. I started taking the dog for a walk or doing something to stay busy after eating to let things settle. I really try not to snack, but it doesnt always work so I try to pick good choices for snacking. Anyhow, I have lost right at 100 pounds and feel great. I have no regrets about the surgery and congratulate you on making good choices and taking the big step. Give it a little more time and hopefully things will smooth out for you. They did me. Good Luck!! -

Your surgeon should give you a list. If I were you, I would stick to the higher Protein options first rather than the higher carb ones. -
Reversal After Sixteen Years!!!
thecheekofgod replied to thecheekofgod's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No worries. My wife is very patient with me in this regard. I tried Chantix once a few years ago when it first became a viable option. It just didn't take. I had a doctor tell me once that, with all my issues, it's a shock that smoking actually isn't the thing that's killing me . . . :-) -
As the wise Wheetsin said, your stomach swelling has pretty much gone all the way down now, so there will be that extra room which you didn't feel immediately post surgery. You also can tolerate foods with it hurting, so, where before you took a couple bites and waited or stopped because of discomfort, you now take another bite. It is all normal and fine. But one thing that can cause increased quantity is fluids while eating, whether it be directly through having a glass of water/juice/whatever, or by having meals which contain liquids: Soups or already mushy stuff: hummus, refried Beans ... Also, are you eating the lean Protein first? These are things that are going to change how you feel the restriction. Use MyFitnessPal to track everything you are eating so you can take a look back. Back to basics ... avoid fluids half an hour before & after and of course, during. Know that you can eat more (size) soup/salads than you can tuna. If you want to feel the most restriction, this has worked for me.

Reversal After Sixteen Years!!!
thecheekofgod posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm new to these forums, so bear with me. My story is long and ... complicated (pun intended). I had an open Roux-en-Y in April of 2002 at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel, Indiana. I lost over 200 pounds in a three year period and have maintained that loss for more than a decade. I am a Type 2 diabetic. I am on insulin. The surgery never really helped, and my own inconsistency and occasional non-compliance (read: stubbornness) are self-made traps. I am in control at present with an a1c of 9.2 (and falling). I walk quite a bit at work and do functional lifting when needed, but am otherwise inactive other than routine daily activities. I started smoking about two years post-op. I needed something to do with my hands as grazing was no longer an option. I have stopped a few times, once for over two years, but have yet to quit completely. As of January, 2015, my kidneys seemed to be fine. My creatinin was 1.5. A little high, but normal for someone in my shape. By July, it has peaked above 5. I was anemic and almost dead. They direct admitted me from the doctor's office and began dialysis. Oxalate nephropathy was the diagnosis. Basically, oxalates in food that normal get absorbed and removed in the stomach and intestines instead routed through my kidneys and formed crystals that clogged up the works. I stayed on hemodialysis, both home and in-center, until September 2016, when I received a transplanted living donor kidney from my son at St. Vincent in Indianapolis. He is my hero. On my last visit at the Indy clinic, my lab work showed my creatinin has risen to 2.3. It had been normal at every other test post-transplant. Because of some medication issues that are getting cleared up, I am dehydrated and my heart is palpitating more than I am comfortable with. No pain, just lethargy and worry. Basically, my new kidney is failing for the same reason as my native kidneys, but at a more alarming rate. The solution? Everyone is leaning toward reversing my WLS. There are enough complications to warrant this course of action, and it beats the alternative of more dialysis and a shortened life. Is this unheard of? Can it even be done so far removed from the original surgery? This is sort of an open topic with vague questions. I just want to spark some conversation to help clarify my thinking. Peace . . . -

Please Explain "Bandster Hell"
meschultz replied to tracie30's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tracie.. I got really sick of the protein drinks as well.. I think it is just normal when you are only having that taste for 7 or 8 days straight.. I behaved and did not have anything to eat until my 9th day and I have to tell you the last day was the hardest.. I had the lump in my throat as well. i think it was just a build up of gas. it went away at about day 12 my first few days of mushies I could barely eat, but it was nice to have something different. I guess our difference is I never felt hungry.. I only ate my required amounts for the protein... I asked my doctor why I was so restricted and he said when he put my band on there is some FILL in it already. so it makes the band ever tighter and usually people start to get hungry because the swelling in their stomachs go down so the band is no longer as tight as it once was.. anyways ask your doc. I bet you had some saline in yours to start as well.. and just power through.. any really pains or things that are very uncomfortable or abnormal call your doc ASAP... best wishes..
