Fellow lap-banders!! I need your HONEST opinion.

OH crap! I am going to have to revise my opinion. I am not in love with the reputation of 1-800-get-thin. They have issues.

    Your WLS choice?

I don't absorb iron so I had no desire to have a procedure that used malabsorption for weight loss. That excluded DS and bypass. I got the band and suffered with it for a little over 3 years. It gave me more problems than I bargained for and did not allow healthy eating (I am speaking for myself only). I got the band out and revised to a sleeve and am VERY happy I did so. You feel restriction the minute you begin drinking fluids and you just can't eat a lot at one meal. With both the band and the sleeve (restrictive weight loss) you CAN gain weight. Low fiber, high calorie foods will slide right down so it's not a be all/end all situation. The sleeve requires no follow-up, no fills, and you don't have a foreign device in your body. Investigate all your options but don't let one surgeon tell you what surgery you should have. Often, surgeonss suggest procedures they can do easily and are expert at over the more difficult surgeries that they lack the skill to perform.

    Lapband Vs. Vsg

Hi, I did struggle and even had the financial person at the office suggest that I do VSG because everyone keeps revising the surgery from lap band to VSG. Ultimately I went with lapband because it's removable. Both parents had stomach issues where surgery was needed and if you have VSG, there is so much scar tissue it's about impossible to get in there and fix what is wrong. I just did not feel comfortable with having my stomach cut out and it's a greater risk.

    November surgeries?

Did your surgeon's office/nutritionist give you a list? My nutritionist gave me a 3 page handout on the 2 week diet I am supposed to be on before surgery. It's basically like a revised Atkins diet. I know for the ketotic diet they have me going on I choose 4 proteins and 1 fat for breakfast. 5 proteins and 1 fat for lunch. 6 proteins and 1 fat for dinner. I also have "free foods" so I'm supposed to add "leafy greens" or "greens" to every meal that I can have an unlimited amount of. I can choose 1 carb per day. I know each is different for everyone but I think this is a pretty typical pre-surg diet.
  5. Hi - I start a 2-week liquid diet on September 2 and will have an Endoscopy and the Pre-op Blood Work done on September 12. My Lapband-to-Sleeve revision is scheduled for September 16 in Houston with Dr. Sheldon Yu of Texas Laparoscopic Consultants. I'm looking forward to getting back on track and losing the rest of my excess weight. Best wishes to everyone!
  6. I just spoke with a friend who has a friend going through the Kaiser Options classes (Pre-op requirement in So. Cal). All classes have been postponed and her friend was informed that her surgeries (elective) have been postponed until further notice. I'm praying for those of you who are on the journey and awaiting your surgery. Don't forget the reason why you are on this journey and remember why you are doing this. When you finally cross the finish line, you are going to appreciate your journey even more. We are going to stay united on our journeys rather it be pre or post-op, this is a real test for each of us. Even those of us who are recently post-op, we have to assure that we stay healthy and keep our immune systems healthy. I had a post-op appt via telephone today, I have to hope that I'm doing the right thing because without direct contact with your medical team it's not clear. Hopefully we all stay complication free, hydrated and mentally healthy. There are also those who need a revision due to complications from their first procedure, the list can keep growing. This is a domino effect that we are in together. Sending positive vibes, prayers and blessings to each of you. Practice patience and keep your peace as your guides as we navigate through this.

What I wish i knew before I had surgery

I'm sorry you've had such bad GERD. I suffer from it too now which is why I told my surgeon that I wanted the bypass instead of the sleeve. This forum is where I found out about the prevalence of GERD worsening after sleeve. Good luck with your revision!
  8. PatientEleventyBillion

    GERD or NAH?

Sounds like GERD. One of the big components of it too is having the feeling like you're going to burp but it winds up being regurgitated food/drink. Definitely get the assessment from your doctor though, they might order other tests too. I have moderate GERD/reflux going into a sleeve next month and crossing my fingers it doesn't make this any worse or I could be facing a revision too.

    Beware The Coffee Creamer Pipeline

Pre weight loss surgery I drank the International Delight creamers, and went through a phase of using half and half. Then when I began my weight loss surgery journey 9 years ago, I swapped out those types of creamers for cashew milk and always sugar free sweeteners like Stevia. To me it was creamier than almond milk. Now that I'm 7 weeks post op revision, I've switched yet again. Now I make 4 oz of strong coffee with a full reusable Keurig pod and add it to a Fairlife protein shake. I make them both hot and iced. Then I add complimenting sugar free coffee syrups to that if I want. I can't recommend these syrups enough! https://www.skinnymixes.com/ (I also add these to Greek yogurt, SF tea, SF lemonade, and I've read that some people add them to oatmeal, but I've not tried that, I don't eat oats very often) I'm sure you could switch to half caffeine and half decaf for a while if you want to slowly eliminate the caffeine from your diet. If you truly enjoy the benefits from a warm beverage, maybe eventually you can go straight decaf and use a protein shake so that a warm cup of coffee is beneficial to your diet and you ensure you reach your daily protein goals. That's what I do. I have two cups a day one in the morning and one in the afternoon, so that's 60 grams of easy protein a day for me. Best wishes!

    Who's benig banded on 11/20???

I really feel for you, Ovahkummer... hope it goes well the next time. I came close to not having the operation because my clinic didn't send all my blood work with me up to the hospital - they had to fax it straight to the anesthesiologist. I say you're still a member of the club in our hearts - once you get the incision, there is no revision! Please keep us posted!
  11. I have acid reflux since sleeve surgery in 2012 did the MGB take care of the reflux and if so is it still under control? I am looking to have the revision in Mexico I see you used Dr. Illan was it a good experience and is he someone you would recommend. I really don't know who to use for sure in Mexico I really want to get off PPI meds and have no more acid reflux. Thanks for your time. Peggy
  12. I am so glad to hear you are doing well. My revision is scheduled for Monday the 10th. I am still freaking out a little!
  13. Revision is in 2 days. To say I am not nervous is an understatement! No pre-op diet other than clear liquids and view prep tomorrow. I really hope this works!
  14. So sorry not sure what happened to the reply I wrote, lol. But anyway thank you for responding! I had my endoscope yesterday. She found that I do esophagusitis at LA level B, which I had to look up, lol. But basically I have lesions on the esophagus, showing signs that the acid is doing damage. She also inserted a Bravo capsule, and I'm currently wearing a PH balance monitor until tomorrow evening. Bad part is I can't take any acid medicine until this monitor comes off! I'm dying from the burning! So once I return it on Monday, and she reads the results I'll know more! How did your appointment go for finalizing your revision? 1 Year Surgervisary

LOL, not sure if you are talking to me? But you did quote me, so I'm going to assume "yes". Sorry if you weren't! I definitely have excess skin in my upper arms and my side boob area, which I am actually getting addressed next week with an arm lift and boob lift revision! (so excited). They aren't so very bad and I can hide them pretty well, but I hate them so they have to go! My butt is also very deflated and I've got a bit of wrinkly skin above my belly button, but i can live with them .

    Pounds lost

2wks post OP 21lbs lost vbg to rny revision
  17. I have also learned lots from people here who haven't done as well as they wanted to. Everyone has something to share. There's no shame in regain, it happens to loads of people for so many reasons. I say post away wherever you like. I suspect all you will get is well wishes. I really really hope you get a better sustainable result with your revision. You're doing a good thing for your health. 🤗
  18. Can you kind of walk me through the first day? Check in, tests, etc? My flight arrived in San Diego at 10:30 am. Ernesto the driver picked me up at the airport and we drove about 3 hours to Mexicali. He stopped once at a convenience store so that you could buy a cold drink or a snack and use the restroom if you needed it. After we arrived at the hospital at about 1:30, I gave a urine sample, a blood sample, had a chest X-ray and an EKG. The coordinator gave me an antibiotic and an Ativan to take that evening, and if you have not already paid she will collect the balance of the money due for surgery. Ernesto drove me to the hotel. Pickup the next morning was at 7:00 a.m. Catheter? If so, before you are asleep or after and when does it come out? No catheter, but I had a surgical drain that came out on the 3rd day.. How long are you hooked up to an IV? I was on an IV the day of surgery, the day after, and part of the 3rd day. It was taken out before my contrast study. Are you feeling well enough to walk to the pharmacy by yourself the day before you leave? Is there an opportunity on the pre-op day? Yes, I felt well enough to walk to the pharmacy on the 3rd day, and depending on what time you get to Mexicali on the pre-op day there is time after your testing. Are you allowed to eat whatever you want for dinner on pre-op day? Is there a decent place to eat at or very near the hotel? Yes, I could eat anything I wanted on pre-op day. I ate at the hotel, I didn't think it was expensive--I had a glass of wine and rib-eye tacos for $14 including tip. Do they really not have wash cloths at the hospital? I don't know, I don't use wash cloths. Did you have diarrhea on going home day? No. I had diarrhea 4 days after coming home when I tried my first Protein shake. If anyone had a revision: On me, Dr. Aceves plans on doing a barium swallow test and an endoscope under heavy sedation on pre-op day. If you had this done, how groggy were you after? I didn't have a revision.
  19. I apologize in advance, and I thank those who post to avoid discussing my food choices, since I have exhausted that topic with severe dietary modification over the last five years, though I welcome any feedback on food choices you made and your results.... I am considering a sleeve to MBP revision, and I have questions about gas. Since I was sleeved, I have struggled with gas terribly, explosive when I lay down, but not overly offensive. I am concerned about any increase in this symptom, and I wonder if some members might share their experience. How often does this happen? Is it daily? What length of bypass (cm) did you receive in your surgery? My specific question is whether a decreased length of biliopancreatic limb bypass provides any relief. I only have 40 pounds more to lose, but I have a congenital form of arthritis that encourages me to lose it permanently. With this goal in mind, I am considering requesting a shorter length of bypass. Thank you for the collective wisdom on this.

    Thing I miss most

It’s definitely tough but you can do it! There is so much variation among practices and even case by case. I was given clearance to eat/drink at the same time after I asked for a definitive answer. For my specific circumstance it was ok because I had a stricture dilated (after VSG to RNY revision) and my anastomosis wasn’t going to stretch any further than they forced it during the procedure. I was told that the concern is sleeve/pouch stretching earlier than it would take to naturally relax.

    Why sleeve to mini bypass?

I don't claim to be an expert here, but a few thoughts come to mind for you to consider: MGB is extremely rare in the US. (It's much more common on other parts of the world, especially Asia.) Part of the reason it's so rare here may be due to the fact that it's not an endorsed procedure by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. I would suspect revisions are even less common, so there's probably not a lot a data on success rates? Because there's not a lot of data, it's a bit unclear if MGB will even address your GERD issue? I'm seeing a few studies out there, but results are unclear. Roux-en-Y GB is actually sometimes performed specifically to treat GERD due to its effectiveness in alleviating those symptoms. I would think if GERD is the main reason for the revision, this may be an important consideration?

    Mini gastric bypass

This is minimally invasive procedure. Google Dr. Rutledge for more info. Restrictive. Malabsorptive The Steps 1. Access to the abdominal cavity: 5 small (1 inch) incisions on the abdominal wall to allow the insertion of access ports. Instruments are then passed through the various ports to complete the operation. 2. Retraction of the Liver: The liver lies over the stomach and must be lifted out of the way in order to complete the operation. 3. Creation of the Mini-Stomach: The stomach is divided into 2 parts. One part, a long narrow tube that will serve as your new "mini-stomach". The second part is the larger remaining part of your stomach which remains alive and well, but is now "defunctionalized", that is to say, it no longer receives or processes food. 4. Bypass of the small intestine: The length of small intestine bypassed varies from patient to patient, usually ranging from 3 to 7 feet. The actual length of intestine bypassed will be determined by your surgeon based on multiple factors including your height and weight, your weight loss expectations, and a careful review of the risks and benefits of a Shorter vs. Longer Bypass. 5. Removal of ports and closure of skin incisions: Upon completion of the operation, all instruments and ports are removed and the 5 small skin incisions are closed with skin closure staples. Performed laparoscopically (5 small, 1" incisions) Usually takes less than one hour to perform Overnight hospital stay Easily reversible or revisable Excellent weight loss Low complication rate Return to normal activity within one week Restrictive - A Small stomach pouch is created restricting the amount of food you can eat. Malabsorptive - A portion of the small intestine is bypassed. Since the small intestine is responsible for absorbing the calories from the food you eat, bypassing a portion of the small intestine results in fewer calories being absorbed, thus creating additional weight loss. Hormonal - The hormone ghrelin has been nicknamed the "Hunger Hormone" by researchers because of its significant effect on appetite. Gastric Bypass results in a fall in ghrelin levels resulting in a reduced appetite.
  23. Hello Angel2018 how is it going since the MGB? I am due to have my sleeve revised to MGB in 2 days and I'm excited!

    OCTOBER GBs where are you?!?!

I'm a band revision to bypass on 10/5/16. I have three weeks of pre-op diet (4 shakes a day with raw veggies to snack). I'm on day 4 of no real food (I'm not a big veggie fan) and it's rough. I almost had a major breakdown last night as I wanted a piece of meat so bad. I had to settle for some cabbage, mushrooms and peppers. Wishing you guys the best over the next couple of weeks! It will be tough, but we have to stay focused on the prize. Tammy
  25. Has anyone on here had a revision from Sleeve to SIPS ? I have an appointment next week with a surgeon about it.. Just wondering to they make your stomach smaller again or they just do the rest of the surgery? How long to recover from this surgery? Have you lost any weight since the surgery?
