Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC

First off, I'm so glad your hubby is completely on board- he's the person that's in the house with you and will be the person you really need on your side. As far as the other people in your life, they can have a seat. Your adult choices-especially ones you're making to benefit your health- are none of their business, especially your boss! How does she know what's right for you? Has she been a friend your whole life and is she there through all your weight struggles? On top of that- this sleeve is NOT easy. It's easier to do weight watchers and have a day where you "cheat" then get back on the wagon. But what would happen-your weight would continue to fluctuate up and down and you would be in the same position or worse this time next year. Right now if I didn't have my sleeve and I was doing some other program, I GUARANTEE I would've cheated and had something I wasn't supposed to. Having the sleeve and knowing something may possibly make me sick is deterrent enough for me- that was part of my personal reasons for getting the sleeve in addition to weight loss and having something in place to help me keep off/ control weight gain long term. The people who are saying these things to you should do some research on the sleeve before they chime in on what you should/shouldn't be doing. I would be willing to bet if you countered their opinion by asking them what they know about the surgery they couldn't even tell you what it is. And for sure the weight doesn't just fall off- you still have to work out to see good progress. Your supposed to exercise 60-90 minutes daily with this in addition to trying to drink all your water, all your protein, and take all the vitamins. Some people get the surgery and lose a small amount of weight and then nothing else (now that we're all together, I came upon a sleeve to bypass revision thread). Easy- I definitely don't think so.
  6. As a revision patient who gained the weight back I say the fear is good!!!

    I think I'm done losing.

I am interested in finding about an experienced veritical sleeve doctor in the US that would convert or do a plication revision to regular sleeve. I have maintained weightloss due to strick calorie counting, but I live a unsatifying life of deprevation/hunger and live on veggies since a bigger stomach - although GPS worked for awhile. However most should know that my results probably aren't typical and GPS does work for other people. Does anyone know a doctor that would consider plication revision to regular vertical sleeve? I hope I don't have to gain all my weight back if I am self paying for revision surgery. If a stomach has stretched out or stitches have come undone, I really don't understand why it is a big deal to convert to regular sleeve since they would be cutting that part out anyway.
  8. I have several fears such as dying and them finding other medical problems (i.e. cancer), but I fear weight regain the most. I currently have the lap band. Lost 115 pounds. Had complications and gained it all back. So, now they have to do a band to sleeve revision. So, yes...weight regain is my worst fear. I just want to lose weight and keep it off.
  9. After being overweight my entire life I decided to get the lap band in dec. 2012. I really wanted gastric sleeve surgery at the time, but my insurance didn't cover it and I felt bypass was "too extreme". My band never could get in the "green zone" and because I traveled for work, often times would be in horrible pain because due to cabin pressure the saline in my band would get tighter. I was miserable! After continually vomiting, uncontrollable acid reflux and weight gain I decided to switch surgical programs and seek new advice. My new doctor advised me on having a revision done and now my insurance approves the sleeve surgery. I thought about it a few months as I was hesitant with feeling like such a failure with the band. In fact I was quite open with my first surgery but people would say later "I thought you were supposed to lose lots of weight?". It just added to my feelings of failure and this round I'm being much more protective of who I talk to about it. I've not gotten a lot of support for my choice but hope by joining this group others will be able to understand my journey and share their own. I'm now going through the approval process and hope to get my sleeve at the end of June.

    Band vs sleeve??

And how has your experience been? I'm so terrified of the band slipping or having to have a revisions etc

    May Bandsters~January Chat!

Myra - so sorry to hear that you are having port issues, but I'm sure the revision will be a peice of cake for you. Good Luck! Linda - well, that sucks! I'm sorry that your hubby's job is stressing you out so. I know that the best thing for your family will happen, always have faith! God Bless, and I'll be praying for a good resolution to your delimma. Missy - I eat in the same range of calories as you, but my weight loss is stalled. This is soooo frustrating. Guess I'll just really try to restrict what I shove in the old "pie hole" until I can get my next fill on Feb. 13th. Keep up the great work!

    Not losing on Optifast

Just as you can lose inches but not pounds, your fatty liver may be revising itself inside and "slimming down" though you are not noticing the effects externally. When you restrict the calories, the body is going to go looking internally for more sustenance. It is probably accomplishing what your doctor is setting out to do, so I would just continue on. Don't necessarily use your scales as a success indicator.

Horizon NJ Health, 12 month wait?

I just got out of the ER...no slippage or erosion. Will I still get a revision by NJ Horizon Health
  17. I'm sorry that your going through this,I'd hope that things can be resolved but the reality is that it probably Won't. I'd get the band removed rather than risk more complications. Reflux, and aspiration are NOT NORMAL. And you don't HAVE to have ANY other WLS, just because your surgeon does a particular surgery. And yes I know about the emotional roller coaster ride you'll be on if you choose not to revise. BUT I believe your STRONG enough to do what is needed. Don't risk your health further. I've copied some literature about slips. Complications associated with adjustable gastric banding for morbid obesity: a surgeon’s guide Anterior slip results from upward migration of the anterior wall of the stomach through the band. This can be due to insufficient anterior fixation and disruption of the fixation sutures. The second cause may be related to increased pressure in the pouch due to early solid food, vomiting, overeating or early (< 4 wk) band fill Posterior slip is defined as a herniation of the posterior wall of the stomach through the band. This is usually related to the surgical technique but is less frequent now with adoption of the pars flaccida approach instead of the perigastric approach In both types of slip, the patient usually presents with dysphagia, vomiting, regurgitation and food intolerance. The diagnosis is made by upper gastrointestinal series. Complications related to band slip include gastric perforation, necrosis of the slipped stomach (type-V prolapse), upper gastrointestinal bleeding and aspiration pneumonia. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3038361/

    Complications after Sleeve Surgery

I try to give you the footnote version of my complications. I am a band to sleeve revision. On June 3rd, I had my revision surgery. On June 5th, a leak was detected on my final leak test. I was rushed to surgery for the leak repair. It was successful, but I could not eat or drink anything until the 25th of June. I had a problem with recovery, and was in ICU for 4 days. The TPN was a liquid form of nutrients, 1800 calories a day fed to me via a central line in my left arm. I had drains due to the leak repair. I recovered slowly, but have since recovered. My leak was attributed to the extensive damage the band did to my stomach. Complications with a virgin stomach are very minimal. Leak stats for any surgeon should be = or < 1%. Other complications can occur with any surgery like Shanda mentioned. If you have done your research on your surgeon, and feel confident in his skill then be certain that you'll do fine. We're all here to support you, and help you through this process. It's okay to be nervous. It's a life changing surgery, and you have to be confident in your surgeon choice. I knew that I would die an early death from co-morbidities. So, the fear of being fat outweighed the fear of surgery. Even with my complications, I would still have the surgery in a heartbeat without a second thought.

    Aetna denied me!

I have Aetna and after two submissions I was approved. However they are getting very very picky. The denial came because they said I needed 1 more appt with a NUT. So I had to go to the office for them to get my weight and blood pressure and temp. Yes vitals and for my NUT to revise her letter of advocation for me to include 120 days of a guided diet. My bmi was 44 and I have (had) type 2 diabetes. Sometimes it's something as little as one day of nutrition classes. That didn't meet their requirement that will get a denial You can appeal the decision with a letter written by you. I've heard that works really well sometimes. Never give up hope, 3 years ago I had blue shield blue cross of Georgia and they denied me 3 times saying my blood pressure was too good and my diabetes wasn't a good enough reason to approve me. So when's company switched to Aetna I tried again... Good luck and appeal if you need to

    Fab 40's shout out

No, I have never even lived in TX. I had a revision and it was difficult to find a surgeon who had experience of revising VBG's to a sleeve All the surgeons within a few hundred miles of KC either wanted to do a gastric bypass on me because that was the "easy way" out for them. I wouldn't settle for that and so I had to travel there to have the surgery. The surgeon did a good job on the surgery for the most part but he has the personality of a DONKEY!

    Fab 40's shout out

I'm joining early. I am 39, but will turn 40 before the summer is over. I'm not sleeved yet. I have verbal approval (waiting on my official letter to get the ball rolling) for revision from lapband to VSG. I can't wait to get this part of my life started!

    Any December surgery

I’m scheduled for revision surgery on December 8. I’ve had two failed bands and a sleeve. Going for bypass. I’m nervous and excited.
  24. I'm an RN also and had surgery with Dr. Aceves. Yes, complications are covered. For example, one person had a "funny looking liver" and Dr. Aceves did a biopsy at no charge. He stands by his surgery but hasn't had a leak so there's no complications. LOL. I told two people and went to Mexico alone. Both were ready to have a stroke that I was (a) having surgery in Mexico and (:confused1: traveling alone and both are the only ones who knew I was having the revision to VSG from the band. I worked a 13 hour shift, went home and showered, grabbed my luggage, and flew 6 hours to San Diego from N.Y. The care at Almater Hospital was great and the hospital was immaculate. Pre-op testing was fast and efficient and the Lucerna resort was beautiful. I saw the surgeons 3 times a day and all the RN staff are BSN prepared. Grab your fiance and tell your family you're going on a short vacation. This is for you and not them.

    Complications after Sleeve Surgery

I had extensive complications with my revision from the band to the sleeve. I would do it all again in a heartbeat, and without a second thought. I've posted all my complications in threads and in my blog. I think most of them are posted in my blog on here. If you click at the top of the page where it says BLOG, you can find mine, and read back through my complications.
