Having 2 Drs with totally different opinions would be a concern. I would be asking both of them lots of questions to find out why they are recommending the 1 surgery over the other. Personally I would avoid the VSG if you have any signs of reflux, whilst you may not feel the symptoms now the surgery is likely to exacerbate them. Do a search, there are plenty of stories here of people that have had to revise from VSG due to reflux. Do you really want to take the risk and possibly require a revision to RNY at a later date?

Make DS public or not?
Strivingforbetter replied to joycie4smiles's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
@deltagirl93 I like how you said you know your crowd. That's exactly the reason why I didn't tell anyone either. People at my work are dog eat dog, meaning they will throw you under the bus given the chance. There's no way I'd give them personal information so they can gossip. I also revised from the band to the DS. I lost maybe 8 pounds on the band and then started gaining. So glad I never told anyone about that surgery either. I don't feel obligated to share my personal medical history with people. Everyone knows weight loss surgery is an option, so it's not like I have the corner on the market. If they really want to be proactive, they can go after it like I did. I like keeping my world private. -
Apollo Overstitch in Tijuana?
HopeSpringsEternal posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has someone had in Tijuana the Apollo Overstitch Revision for a prior gastric sleeve? I really want as much information re quality of medical care and cost and recuperation as possible. Thank you! Sent from my LG-TP260 using BariatricPal mobile app -
He said that if I lost over 50% of my excess weight, the surgery was a success and that revisions could be done if I didn't achieve the 50% which I think will be unlikely since I've already lost 21% at 3 weeks post-op. If I lose 50% I'll be extremely happy and I understand that this is entirely up to me to lose all the 100%.

Waking up coughing in the night is probably due to reflux and acid creeping back up your oesophagus. It has happened to me a number of times and it is horrible. The probable reason for you not being able to swallow is oesophagal failure. I have been advised by my surgeon that this is quite a common problem. With a band the oesophagus works so hard to push food through that it eventually gets to a point where it can no longer do so. You need to go and see your surgeon and discuss your options. The band needs to be removed and you probably want to revise to another type of WLS. I have been advised by my surgeon that a sleeve is NOT a good option after a band due to the high risk of reflux. As you already have symptoms you will probably be advised to go with a Roux en Y gastric bypass. This is the route that I am going with in Jan after having my band since 2009. Some surgeons like to do a 2 step procedure with 2 separate surgeries but some will do both in 1. Now I'm not sure what the NHS will or won't cover. Here in Aus having the band removed and revised to an RNY means I have to pay another lot of "out of pocket" costs +/-$5000. If only we could get a refund for the band because of the issues it has caused.
-
I have reflux and my surgeon also recommended bypass, but after some tests said the sleeve would be OK, so that's what we did. I'm surprised your doc said to do a revision if you don't lose 50% - my doc said I'd only have to do revision if my reflux became intolerable. he said that only something like 10% of sleevers get worse reflux and 4-6% of sleeves need to be revised to bypass. Even if I "only" lose 50%, I'll be delighted. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd love to lose more, but I'd be fine if the ultimate loss is the average 60% EWL.

On the road again, just can’t wait to get...
vic91218 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everybody. I’m new here and I’m wondering if any of you out there make a living on the road? I’m a professional musician, and I’ve been touring constantly for the last 15 years. I had the LapBand surgery in 2008. I weighed 425lbs, and lost just over 100lbs. Since then however, I gained a lot of it back. :( in 2017, I weighed 380lbs again. I’m pretty sure it was me that failed the band, but either way, I finally made it back to my surgeon to discuss options earlier this year. I’ve been working hard and I’m down to 318. I’m ready to take a new step, and have made the decision, along with my surgeon, to move forward with a revision surgery schedule now for Dec 12th. I was approved by my insurance and all seems well.... However, I’m of course nervous. Giving my past failing with the band, road life, being sedentary for so many hours at a time.... I’m just wondering if anyone else is living out on the highway? Truck drivers, other musicians, etc. What do you do for excelsior? Food? Any advice or tips? My biggest concern and point of stress is, I return to touring Dec 27th. Right when I’m making a proposed transition from liquids to purées. I’m wondering how I’m going to manage that while touring. How to prepare for those two weeks I’ll be traveling, spending most my time in a bus, or hotel room. I hope everyone is doing well today. Thank you for reading and thank you for your response. Looking forward to chatting with some of you. :) Cheers! -
Endoscopy and motility test! I’m abnormal!
Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 replied to MSG0310's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A couple of things - I am a bypass person by the way. You say you don’t want the bypass due to cost (that is reasonable! I was mostly self-fund and it is tough - but worth every cent)), the malabsorption and dumping. Malabsorption and dumping are really a much smaller deal than people seem to imply. Re the malabsorption, I take a 10c vitamin pill every day and a 15c folic acid tablet. That really isn’t a big deal! And the dumping? Well, I had it initially, and it was a real help for me to change how I eat. I don’t know what your eating habits are like, but I was obese because I ate way way way too many sweets, as comfort or habit. A couple of episodes of dumping early on made even the thought of sweets very unappealing - so I stuck absolutely to my programme and got to goal weight in 6 months. The dumping has passed and I wish it hadn’t - not it is just willpower and I know that isn’t my strong suit!! I am only telling you things because I would encourage you to do the thing that is best for your health. Those “problems” with a bypass are really small in the scheme of things. And there are a lot of people end up having a revision from VSG to bypass - often reflux related. So maybe try and be a bit open to the idea of a different surgery even if it is your second choice? A bypass will help you get thinner (on average) quicker (on average) and any side effects you have are entirely manageable - and reflux will be dealt with, so you’ll no longer be quietly damaging your insides. -
Hello! I am brand new to this site and am glad I found it. All of your stories are very inspiring. I'm being sleeved this coming Monday 11/26! It is actually a revision surgery - I got a lap band about 11 yrs ago. In short, I got pregnant about 2 months later and then was too petrified to go back to the surgeon after that - so dumb, I know. My 2 BFFs had this surgery and are doing fabulously! I'm feeling pretty clear-headed about all of the lifestyle changes I'll be making, but the one thing that's freaking me out is the anesthesia. In short, I'm afraid something crazy will happen and I'll never wake up! I literally want to get all of my affairs in order before Monday, like make sure my husband has all of the bank passwords and such. The nurse made a note during my pre-op call and said they'll put a little something special in my pre-op IV ;), but has anyone else felt this fear??

Just had revision from Sleeve to SIPS
MSTieMom replied to disco stu's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks for sharing your numbers, deltagirl - you are doing great!! It’s good to see how other revisions to SIPS are doing. I’m now 3 weeks out from a sleeve to sips revision and about 9 or 10 lbs down. I’m very happy with this start, although I’m sure it will slow down. I need to add exercise - as you have wisely incorporated ... I’ve just been to lazy. ;) -
FISHING FOR COMPLIMENTS
deltagirl93 replied to GreenTealael's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great idea! I'm just so full as I write this because over the last 10 months, I'm down 108.7 lbs. I had a revision from the lap-band to SIPS and I couldn't be more happy. I did have some complications in the beginning which required a month long stay in the hospital, but even with that, I don't have any regrets! My life is on TEN!!! Even though I have not shared publicly my WLS experience with friends, people seem to be genuinely happy for the new me. I've always socialized, but I'm even more eager to hang out with my friends, go on couples dates, business social settings, etc. because I can easily find something to wear and feel even more confident in myself. I'm feeling great physically. No more back and knee pain. Off of all meds (blood pressure, cholesterol, symbicort breathing treatment) and off of CPAP machine for sleep apnea. Also, since having the lap-band removed as part of the revision, I no longer have acid reflux. While the vanity is great, the health benefits have me over the moon ecstatic! I'm sooooooooooo happy! -
Make DS public or not?
deltagirl93 replied to joycie4smiles's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I'm late responding to your post, and according to your original post, it seems you may have already had your surgery. I hope that you are recovering well. My situation is kind of odd, because this is my second time at the rodeo. The first time I had the lap-band in 2006. I told one close friend and my immediate family. Fast forward 12 years and I've had the revision from the band to SIPS, and I only told my husband and son. My daughter, brother, and mother don't even know, and the friend got chopped out of hearing the news as well. Compared to 2006 to now, more information is available to people which causes them to form their own, and sometimes, uneducated negative opinion. While I'm generally a "don't give a sh** what someone thinks kind of person", the crappy opinions out there and the idea of defending why I did what I did just doesn't get me excited. While it seems almost hypocritical, I share foods that I make, my gym check-ins and walks all on Facebook. As such, I'm getting a ton of support from folks supporting my new food regime, exercise routines and weight loss. It's very encouraging, and I'm glad I took this route instead of bearing all on the table. It keeps me motivated daily reading such encouraging posts on FB, posts that I don't believe I would have received had I shared the surgery. I know my crowd. 🙂 -
Veterans - Revision to Bypass Results
Matt Z replied to shoregirl75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So, yes, *typically* revisions lose less quickly than first timers. But that doesn't mean that's what it'll be like for you, just something you have to be aware of *if* it happens. I'm down over 100 lbs since March. Not sure if that's typical or more... I'm at the point now where my weight loss as slowed down greatly, I could easily move to maintenance if I wished to stay at this weight, but I want to go a bit lower so I'm still working on it, but it sure has gotten much harder to do. Check out my post It was 20 lbs or so ago now, but it still holds true -
Veterans - Revision to Bypass Results
shoregirl75 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So when I decided to have a revision from sleeve to bypass, due to bad reflux and weight gain, my surgeon warned me that my weight loss results would be slower than if I had not had previous WLS. I defiantly felt like I lost more quickly with my initial surgery. I just wondered for those that are farther out from revision......... Did you reach your goal? How much of your excess weight did you lose 40% 50%, 60% or more of your estimated weight loss goal? Do you feel that your weight loss was slower than with your initial WLS? Did you weight loss slow dramatically after the first few month? How long did it take you to get to goal? I would love to hear any information or progress stories you revision veterans are willing to share. Thanks! -
Losing more than the expected 40-60% ?
FluffyChix replied to b_co's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So far I've lost about 73% of my EBW. The first 60% was "easier", but far from easy. LOL. I followed a plan and stuck to it. I lost weight. It was and IS a diet. Make no mistakes about that. LOL. Many are lucky in that the rule: Even blind squirrels will find a nut every now and then...applies to them with surgery. The surgery does a lot of the heavy lifting. But I was not so fortunate. I have to work for every pound lost. And if you want to get beyond your 60%, it takes outright work, cunning, hacking, revising, and continuing to walk the WLS walk, every damn day. But it is worth it. I dreamed big. My RD told me it was unrealistic, but I was not gonna settle for "Overweight" after having major tum surgery. I want to be in the normal weight range and that is anything below about 140lbs. My goal is 125-130lbs. It may take another year to get there. LOL. -
Just had revision from Sleeve to SIPS
deltagirl93 replied to disco stu's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello, I had a revision from the lap-band to SIPS on February 14th. I've lost about 108 lbs over the last 10 months. I am very pleased with this revision. I exercise 5-6 days a week, I've dropped my drive-thru queen habit and cook way more, and just overall eat better quality food. I don't diet per se, but again, eat more vegetables and protein and take it somewhat easy on the carbs. There really isn't anything that I can't eat. However, I don't push it, but allow myself an indulgence from time to time so I don't lose my mind. Of everything, the exercise is the most consistent routine I do in this entire process. I really try not to miss working out as I believe that it has been key in aiding the weight loss and will be key in keeping it off, because I'm not a perfect eater and will never be one, although better. Weight loss by month below. It's starting to taper down. I'm okay with that as I hit my initial goal of 190. My second goal of 170lbs is just 18lbs away. Anything I lose after that will be gravy as I carry weight pretty well. People already think that I'm much less than I actually am. Month 1 (Feb) = 13.6 Month 2 = 21.2 Month 3 = 10.8 Month 4 = 10.4 Month 5 = 11.9 Month 6 = 12.5 Month 7 = 6.9 Month 8 = 8 Month 9 = 8.4 Month 10 (Nov) = 5 - so far -
I’m having revision on December 17th. Congrats n your journey!!

I’m new here - my surgery date is December 17, 2018. It will be revision surgery - band to sleeve all on the same day.

I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?
nomorefattypatty replied to Pam Peltz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 57, had the vgs in June 2017, I'm revising to the bypass soon because of hiatel hernia and acid reflux. I literally have the acid back up into my windpipe and close off my ability to breath. I have to keep a rescue albuteral inhaler just to get breathing again. It's very scary. Sent from my N9560 using BariatricPal mobile app -
my lapband story -- its not pretty (long post, but please read)
nosilla replied to nosilla's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Wow...I logged back in to this platform as my journey continued and forgot this thread was here. I can’t believe I’ve been in this band nightmare for over 12 years!!! In 2007 I finally got the port removed. My doctor very nonchalantly said “it tested positive for MRSA infection”. I had NO idea the implications. He handed me a card for an Infectious Disease doctor and told me to go across the street to their office. Again, NO idea what was ahead. Suddenly I had a nightmare of a PICC line (took 2 excruciating days to insert) for Vancomycin and a wound vac system. I had both of these for weeks, my home was a virtual hospital. I even took that show to work a few times. Crazy. That was over 10 years ago. In those 10 years I had just the band. I’d never been able to get it removed because it wasn’t presenting obvious negative effects and my insurance wouldn’t cover it. After a decade I finally started the path to revision to a sleeve. I had the band removed on 10/26. It was very complicated. My outpatient procedure turned into 6 days in the hospital. The band had eroded into my stomach (common) but also had RAVAGED my small intestines. The new surgeon said he had never seen anything like it. He had to get the band out of several spots in the intestines and do a lot of repair work. While recovering, about 24 hrs after surgery, things went south. BP low, breathing shallow, heart rate up, fever...ugh. Many tests later and we determined that my chronic Diverticulitis had flared up and was causing the additional pain and infection. It was a very long 6 days, and the fevers kept coming. After being released and on a better coarse of oral antibiotics, things are finally better. It’s been 3 weeks and I am almost not in pain. It was a miracle I didn’t have a blockage, or major infections with that band. I now think my bowel perforations and infections may be related to the band. I had no idea and I guess the band was never visible in the CT scans. Anyway... I wanted to finish my 12 year saga. I’m almost second guessing the sleeve surgery. I feel like I am 4/4 with bad surgery issues...but the reality is that a lot of things (if not all) were caused by that awful band. I may have the surgery, but it will be after the New Year. That bums me out because it will very VERY expensive with out of pocket costs...but realistically I need more time to heal...and I am unable to miss a wedding on Dec 29th. Not sure anyone will read this...but that’s where I am. Xx -
gastroparesis and possible band removal
summerset replied to granny15's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Me, too. However, I was afraid of the bypass surgery and years ago it was kind of complicated to get the revision (and no guarantee you'd get it at all!!). Nowadays there are quite a few hospitals in Germany that perform revisions because of reflux without the patient having to get permission from insurance first!
