I had the VSG on 18/8 and had to do injections for 10 days. My hospital roommate had a gastric bypass and she had to do 30 days of injections, so it also varies per surgery. Good luck on your recovery!

Surgery Revision While at a Normal Weight (135)
orangeisyoung posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there in the same boat, or who has gone through something similar. I had Lap Band surgery in 2014. Ultimately gained back all my weight and more. After the birth of my youngest daughter, I underwent a revision to Duodenal Switch in August of 2019 at 285 pounds. Over the course of the next 6 months, I also got sober, and ultimately, at this point, I'm down to 130-135, having lost 150 pounds. I was sitting at about 160 pounds in January, and have lost the additional 25-30 since then. In January of this year, I started struggling with dysphagia. For the most part, I would vomit solid food back up, no matter how slow I ate, if I drank or didn't drink. Protein, veggies, carbs, you name it, I tried to make it work. With Covid and such, it was April of this year before I managed to get an endoscopy, which showed a severe hiatal hernia (which had not been present at the time of my lap band, or my revision surgery). Had that corrected in May, went about 8 weeks of glorious being able to eat again, and then it was like someone slammed on the brakes. Back to being unable to keep solid food down. Worse than before. Many, many days vomiting liquid too. The day I had my most recent endoscopy I was so dehydrated the anesthesiologist ultimately had to do the IV on me, after 3 nurses tried and failed, even with ultrasound. During that procedure, they found that my gastric pouch has a greater than 90 degree turn in it, resulting in the upper part of my stomach being dilated and food being unable to travel back up, in order to go down. I'm having another revision surgery tomorrow to correct the issue. My understanding is it is just a revision of my stomach pouch, which with duodenal switch, is basically similar to the gastric sleeve. Has anyone else had a revision surgery for medical reasons, while at a normal weight? I've struggled to maintain my weight at 130-135 for the last several months. And by struggled I mean I've been trying not to lose too much more weight. I am definitely down to what I would call a healthy weight on my frame. I'm wearing a size 6 pant, small/medium tops, etc. Any problem areas are really skin based at this point I think, not weight. If anyone has gotten this far, and has in fact had a revision while at a normal weight, what was your diet like after surgery? I'm obviously going to discuss this with my surgeon as well, but all the literature I've been provided with thus far is for weight loss patients. The goal being to keep calories low, protein high, jump start weight loss, all that jazz. I'm just interested in how it will work for me, being as my weight goal is maintenance, not loss.- 6 replies

My Gastric Bypass is on September 21st! 5 days away! I can't wait. But the biggest thing I am dreading is gas pains. I had them with my gallbladder surgery and they were awful!

Absolutely no problem! I’m glad I saw your post. Since the surgery is relatively unknown I had no one to ask, so I promised myself to answer anyone who were in the same situation 🙂 1. this was my first (and only) surgery and I’m so happy I chose the sasi bypass! I have had absolutely no problems and minor problems with food (say bye bye to pancakes as your first meal of the day 😂) 2. The first month I was able to eat half a yoghurt, so the weight loss came straight ahead. Please remember that there will be times when you don’t loose weight, up to 2-3 months; these are the times when your body changes the most. Embrace these periods instead of hating them 😎 3. I lost my hair BIG TIME so whatever you can do to prevent this.. 😂 And that is the one thing I wish I knew before the surgery. I looked like a muppet at one point 🙈 I have absolutely no problem recommending this type of surgery for people who are larger than what the sleeve will help you with. I was 150kg and have been steady at around 72kg for a year. I am 180cm. I’m on vacay, so you do the lbs/ft calculation please 😂

One week from surgery
Tony B - NJ replied to Evangeline1205's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Evangeline.....I think you need something to distract you. During my "liquid diet" which is not really a liquid diet because you can east one meal at night, correct? The protein shakes should help a lot to quell the hunger and if you start to feel like you are hungry, which you are probably not hungry for real, go for a walk or something to take your mind off it. You should be seeing some weight fall off and that should motivate you. I am rarely hungry and more. The first sign of what feels like hunger I have a glass of water or clear protein drink and it seems to pass pretty quickly. You have to get over the "hunger" or you will be fighting this forever and it will not work. Unfortunately, the surgery is not a magic bullet and if you do not show willpower and control of your "hunger" you are going to lose it and gain it right back. Scroll through all the many posts on this forum and you will see just that. The people who are struggling with the weight are the people who focus on eating and hunger. Without tackling that, the new "tool", your sleeve or bypass will not work properly. A good screwdriver only works if you use it properly. If you do not, you strip the screw head and are in a worse position than before. -
Oh my gosh! You wrote back! Thank you! Thank you! yes it’s done by endoscopy now - totally out patient. I was wondering if you did it as a first surgery or revision I’m doing it as a first - surgeons okay with this! Did you notice weight loss right away, same as other surgeries or is it slower but more permanent ( this is how I understand it) What do you wish you had known Before? Did you loose your hair? I’m paying for it out of pocket so 🤦♀️ Yikes! Would you still choose this one over any other surgeries! I was pretty much sold on the outpatient aspect but I’m wondering why not many places do it? I have to fly out of the state I live in to get it done! Still within the Us but I would have liked for there to be something closer to me! thank you again for getting back to me! neeta 😌

Sleeve to bypass revision with arthritis
rivergirl replied to Frostyauggie's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I also have RA (was diagnosed post-VSG) and am headed toward a revision for GERD in the next few months. My rheumatologist automatically put me on injectable methotrexate so i didn't have to deal with any GI side effects. It's really easy and cheap - I still have to draw it up myself from the vial with an insulin needle. But I have no side effects from it. My bigger problem will probably be figuring out what i can take for as-needed pain relief... -
Weight gain after Bypass surgery
toodlerue replied to Lisa LoVuolo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I regained 1/2 of what I lost 😠 I used the Fast Metabolism Diet by Haylie Pomroy. I lost what I had gained & then hit my goal weight over 3 years after my bypass. The diet recommends eating a lot of food each day. I couldn’t do that but I did follow what foods to eat in each phase & did it for 1 month. Then I loosely followed along & kept loosing. We just got back from vacation today. We ate way too many bad things so we are gonna do it for another month starting on Monday (it’s easier to keep track of the phases if you start on a Monday). My whole body felt better & my face waits swollen each morning. There is a very good Fast Metabolism group on FB. They are always very helpful & answer questions pretty quickly. you can always send me a PM if you have any questions. -

Shoulder and neck pain after vsg
Lisa LoVuolo replied to NeenersNW's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been in pain with my head to toes since my gastric bypass surgery Sent from my U307AS using BariatricPal mobile app -
Your stomach is still healing and for some people it's hard to feel 'full' on liquids. Some people don't feel 'full' until they are either on pureed or soft foods. For reference, my own surgery has a VSG stomach... just with an added intestinal bypass bit.

Any 45+ year old women on here with gastric bypass experience?
Tomo replied to timmytommy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'll be 61 soon. I had revision from VSG to bypass early last month, in August. I'm 30 lbs. down from my 10 day pre-op to the last time I weighed. Recent metabolism study says that our metabolism doesn't change until 60 years old, and after that 0.7% decrease every year after. https://www.studyfinds.org/human-metabolism-age-60/#:~:text=The study finds humans burn, only 0.7 percent per year. -
Sleeve to Ryn...Help
Tomo replied to Mendy323232's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had it done for Gerd/esophagitis. My surgeon didn't touch my sleeve either, he also did a standard procedure (RL 150cm, BPL 60cm) when I asked him about length. My insurance would not cover it if he did anything out of standard procedure. Since my 10 day pre-op and surgery early August 2021, I've lost 30 lbs. It is currently faster than my weight loss with my sleeve. Some say they have far more restriction with their VSG than RNY after revision. That is definitely NOT the case for me. I have far more restriction now. My VSG surgeon was conservative and made a larger sleeve (~300ml), every surgeon/person is different. -
Revision surgery 9/8/2021
scollins707 replied to scollins707's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my revision surgery on 9/8, and the gas pain was insane. It took three days for it to subside. Shortly after that, I had a sharp pain near one of my incisions, which has finally started to go away as of yesterday. I have lost 13 lbs, and I feel pretty good. I plan to keep this thread updated for people who are thinking of revising. -

My heights to was 350 am now 184 pounds but i exercise and lift weight . I am happy to say I have a tool to work with because losing weight on my own I couldn’t do it I have disc problems and thyroid issues but now they remove the thyroid issues so am left with the back issues but I still keep active . I can always adjust my tool and lose more weight but I stick to fruits , vegetables , protein which Include protein shake and smoothies and my weight remains the same even through the pandemic -
Sleeve to Ryn...Help
GreenTealael replied to Mendy323232's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You will need to talk to the surgeon about the length of the bypass and optimizing it for either additional weight loss or just maintaining your current weight. This *might* dictate how much additional weight you might lose. -
I’m 6 days post op and have the same problem. I haven’t been able to have more than 1 protein drink a day so far, plus my other fluids. Today i forced myself to have 2 and am currently trying to finish a third. How is your pain? Did you have a bypass or sleeve? I had the bypass. My incision locations do not hurt, injust have this annoying inner pain to the left of my naval. It shoots pain whenever I move. If I didn’t have that, I’d be ok. Todays also the first day I’ve really wanted to eat something. But I have 1 more week in phase 2.

Any October 2021 Surgeries?
Breanne (w 2 pups) replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m getting the bypass on Oct 6. I’m so excited, but nervous about the physical recovery. I have a physical job and want to be safe, yet be able to go back to work. -
I have a gastric bypass revision in the morning at hospital Angeles with Dr. Corvala due to some anatomical issues and I am so incredibly nervous. I feel terrible for leaving my toddler and partner. The hospital and surgeon are highly accredited and great reviews but I’m still terrified. Please say nice things to help me relax lol

No regrets. Coming up on 6 weeks post op. No gerd from my vsg after the revision to bypass. Weight loss satisfactory. Equivalent to the sleeve. I just broke a one week stall, and dropped another 1.8 lbs. What is interesting is I had heard horror stories about "never trust a fart" lol and bowel problems. I almost decided against it but surgeon said I had to fix my gerd... But maybe cause I no longer have severe gerd, everything is literally normal. I feel no difference than before any of my WLS except I get full after a few bites. Having said that, I am early on and hope this positive trend of health continues. I can handle stalls and working to get the weight off but am always scared of leaks and other serious complications down the road. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

the reason is so that the food stays in your stomach longer (liquids will flush it out). However, this makes more sense to me for bypass people rather than sleeve, since the pyloric valve is bypassed in RNY. Regardless, it seems to be a requirement for both surgeries.

New feeling. Not hungry. Update.
Tomo replied to Tomo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Things are going very well. No goals since it was more about my Gerd which seems to be resolved (Yay lol). I'm 28 lbs. down now, and I think the revision was the best thing I could have done for myself. As my surgeon said after my post-op appointment... It's already a win then if my Gerd is gone. I did bring up the fact that I can't eat very much and my calories are 500-700 cal. at best and he said "Good. Keep it that way for awhile to lose more weight." That's about all he said lol. One thing that has helped my appetite or lack thereof, is I can sleep much better because I'm not constantly waking up with acid in my throat anymore. Waking up and not being able to sleep always tempted me to munch on something for energy instead of sleep. Thank you so much for asking! -
Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
kerrik54304 replied to MelissaWisconsin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey fellow Wisconsinite! I just had to say I can relate to many things you are saying. I had my band removed 3 years ago after 10 years. I was amazing to to eat a cheeseburger with a bun! I couldn’t have a revision at the time because my BMI was too low, but after too many cheeseburgers I am scheduled for RNY in October. I also had/have issues with acid reflux. If I could have done it 3 years ago I would have and not had to go through all of the weight gain. -

Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
MelissaWisconsin posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I have had the lap band for a little over 10 years. I had lost 100 lbs but gained 30 back. I recently found out my band migrated. I was having severe acid reflux, regurgitation, and sleepless nights of choking and puking. I finally had some testing done & they found my band migrated and there was a hernia above it and my lower esophagus was having issues pushing food through. I got my fluid taken out on Friday & I am finally able to sleep again. I am really shocked about how strange it is to be able to eat things I wasn't able to for 10 years, I am also enjoying taking a drink while eating. I am going to revise to the gastric bypass surgery & was wondering if anyone has had better success after a revision from the band to bypass? I can't do the sleeve because of my acid reflux issues. I tried to avoid bypass, as to why I had the band to begin with. Something about moving my insides around didn't sit well with me. I also see horror stories about dumping and blood sugar issues. I don't want to gain all my weight back because of a band issue & also don't want to have a removal of one thing and nothing to replace it. I am not sure how fast this will all go, they said they could do emergency surgery if I was still having issues, or do it as a normal surgery. My insurance covers revision. Hopefully soon before I gain all this weight back. I'm enjoying trying different foods I had to avoid for the past 10 yrs. hahahaha.
