Too tight? Or is this typical?
NaNa replied to Wanna-Be-Healthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hmm...suggesting ways to prevent vomiting with their bands is not telling them how to eat, SOME people may want to know how to avoid vomiting with their bands....I could care less how tight someone keep their band, however I honestly get sick and tired of people bashing the band and blaming the world for their problems, when all they have to do is take precautions and learn how to live with their bands, but that still don't guarantee problems, but it sure can minimize them. Removing a lap band can cost between $15,000 - $80,000 depending on how severe complications are, and where they live, and some people may not have insurance to get the band removed....this can be catastrophe for some if they have to pay cash, so some people may want to know the good, bad and ugly about the band and what they are getting into.. AND FYI...I have a brand new AP band, it's in my signature....I don't lie about my lap band status.... My lap band did not SLIP, nor did I have any esophageal damage after 8 years and it did not have to come out, I developed a hernia, and in order for me to get my hernia repaired my surgeon had to remove my old 4cc band because they do not unbuckle like the new bands do without destroying the entire lap band system, so I had to get a new AP band...so there ya go hopefully you learned something new today. And *I* decided to get it replaced and I am very happy I did so, I love my band and want to keep it another 10 years if possible... Also edited to add: I've never had any food intolerance or vomiting issues with my old band and new band...I am grateful for that. But I've seen others suffer with not being able to eat solid food and frequent vomiting and suffer band damage from it. Although I love my band and I am not stupid or naive enough to believe it may last a lifetime, I DO know that it has a very high complication rate, some of it patients fault, some of it no aftercare, some of it medical reasons from no fault of the patient, but there ARE PREVENTIVE COMPLICATIONS...like vomiting daily on a too tight band. Here is an article on the band complication rate, I don't have time to dig up studies...but there is a pretty high complication rate, but most of the complications are not serious...that was one of my reasons for rebanding.... I feel lucky and grateful to be able to get another band, many are no longer candidates due to severe esophageal dilation from being too tight too long. However, I still can develop another hernia down the road, who knows.... http://abcnews.go.co...ory?id=13187452 -

I only speak the truth......and I guess you can call me a lap band expert...I've been there done that and seen it all, researched every possible complication ...I've even educated my surgeon at times ...they just install the band and don't live with it....we do..LOL -
male only Male Gynecomastia and Weight Loss - Breast Lift and Reduction for Drooping Chest
Ginnysboy posted a topic in The Guys’ Room
Good Day Gentlemen, I had Gastric Sleeve surgery in January of this year and have lost 143 pounds and have plateaued which I am fine with. I have gone from a size 46 pants to a 32 and a 3 to 4 XL shirt to a large/medium. I am writing to see if any other men have had any experience with Male breast/chest reduction or lifting after weight loss surgery. I understand insurance will normally not pay for this unless there is a medical issue. I do not have such an issue, I honestly have not had a major problem with loose skin. I have some loose skin on the inner thighs, buttocks and under arms but this is minimal and nothing I really can't live with. My issue is my chest. To be honest with you all, my chest has been an issue most of my life. i was a heavy child, teen and adult and from early on thanks to genetic and my weight have had male breasts. I have always been emotional about this, self-conscious and embarrassed. Always wore tight under shirts to try and hold them in. Now that I have taken this major step and lost all this weight of which I am proud and happy and soooo much healthier. I am exercising every day and loving it, I still have the emotional scars from having large man boobs but now they are loose skin sacks. Sigh. I am going this Friday to a consultation with a plastic surgeon my doctor has recommended but want to put this out there to see if any one has had this surgery and can provide information. Here are my questions so far (Oh BTW I live in Maryland just as a geographic point of information): 1. What type of procedures are available? 2. How long was the surgery? 3. How many days where you in the hospital if at all and what was the recovery period? 4. How painful was the surgery? 5. Did you have any complications? 6. What was the cost? 7. Any other information you may want to share? I appreciate any information and thanks for letting me post and for being able to put this out there to you all. Thanks, Ray- 8 replies

How Much Did You Gain During Pregnancy After Rny?
LilMoon1980 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone, I am new here, i have posted on another site frequently, but they don't seem to have an app... Anyhow, i am 2.5 yrs post op, lost all my weight, no problems or complications, so yay! That's great and i have been very happy. My husband and i decided to have a baby back in April, and I had no trouble getting pregnant. I am currently 7 mos pregnant. I am getting worried though, at this point i am ahead of schedule, already gained 30 pounds. I can honestly say i have been eating as i should, only a few craving caves here and there. Did anyone else exparience this and bounceback ok after having the baby? Also, i have no idea how many calories i should be eating at this point... I am going to see a dieticien soon, but in the meantime, i am trying to keep track and be really careful. Any help is appreciated. Lil Moon -
Almost scared to eat
GoingforGoal replied to carrie.0508's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Throwing up from nausea or from getting stuck? There's lots of talk about being afraid to transition foods due to fear of getting stuck so I just want to clarify. If thus far you have not had any complications with your Clear Liquids (nausea, excessive restriction where it doesn't feel like the Water is going down etc) than it's time to transition. Go slow and test each sip. Going slow will reduce nausea but will also let you gauge if the thicker liquid is problematic. If it is, extend your clears another day and try again. If not, slowly add volume with each 'meal' and eat progressively thicker liquids once the thinner liquids pass with no problem. Although docs give us timelines, we are all unique and sometimes we need to extend the period we are on (liquids, mushies etc). It's an experiment to say the least. Listen to your band and your body. Trust when you feel uncomfortable to stop or even take a step back. But also trust that when there's no issue, there's no issue and you can resume transitioning. Easy does it. But please don't be 'scared' simply be slow -
Is prolapsed lap band enough reason to waive 6 month medically supervised diet?
band2sleevesatx replied to ribearty's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just saw this and was going to tell you no, you will not have to go thru the 6 month waiting period since you have already had the surgery and are having complications. -
I'm sorry you are going through that Erica. I doubt some of the complications you went through helped in your weight loss. I am not judging you, but you said you are eating the wrong foods and not sticking to the advice you were given. Why? Fills won't do anything if you are drinking while eating, snacking or having slider foods. The cycle of guilt, overeating, then hating myself because I "failed" is what made me fat to begin with so I am trying not to be "perfect" this time, but eat in a way I can live with long term. Willpower is difficult but necessary for ANY type of WLS.

Bummed i have only lost 25 pounds in 3 yrs
Pegsinthewoods replied to HAGS2121's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I too, WAS a slow looser. I found out I had an eroded band and it was removed April 9, 2011 (installed Aug. 4, 2008). I was very ill. Please watch yourself if you stop loosing, it could be a sign of a complication. I do miss my band. Without it, I struggle even more and wrestle with unnecessary guilt over eating. I am currently checking into other WLS because once you have an erosion, you cannot be banded again. -
Friends and family reaction your wls surgery
xoxococojay replied to xoxococojay's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You owe your family nothing, it's none of their business. And if they give you crap, you need to ask yourself why you consider wasting your time with these toxic people. "When all is said and done, usually more has been said than done. " I haven't told my dad yet either due to fear of his opinions. But if you know for sure that you want the surgery, go for it! It will be a positive change for you in the end. Plus you can always let him know after the fact. But i would still tell someone like a close friend just so they are aware of what's going on, in case you do have complications. Best of luck to you though. I know how stressful this can be. I'm still in my pre-op phase as well. If you or anyone else would like to talk privately, feel free to send me a message. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Well, let's see how he's feeling tomorrow ... once the pain medicine all wears off. Am glad he came through his surgery w/o any complications and there was no hernia repair needed. He didn't believe me that they operated on him and had to lift his "gown" up to double check ...:bored0: -
Gastric Bypass or Sleeve? Why did you choose what you chose?
WL WARRIOR replied to natalie132's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was signed up to get gastric bypass next month and was waiting for insurance approval. My surgeon encouraged me to switch to the sleeve while reviewing my chart. I rely on 2 meds to keep clinical depression under control. I have tried quitting the meds and failed because my depression returned full force. The surgeon strongly thinks that I should not get gastric bypass because it will interfere with absorption of my meds. I really didn't want to switch because it meant I would have to wait another 4-6 weeks for approval from my insurance co. However, I decided to go with the sleeve because I really could understand how full absorption was important. The sleeve is not nearly as invasive (surgery only takes 45 min.) and chance of complications are lower. Do people lose more weight with gastric bypass? I've read research articles with conflicting results. Every person is different and I think your results will depend on how much work you put into it. I know of four woman in my community who have gotten gastric bypass 2-3 years ago and three of the four put most of the weight back on. I use to think your stomach would not stretch much with gastric bypass, but it seems like I was wrong. -
Revision from Band - Surgeon wants sleeve, I want bypass!
Pinkgirl1234 replied to Taunter's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I told my surgeon that bypass was what I wanted and that's it.They like to do the sleeve because it's easier.I have a lot of weight to lose and the band was the "IT" procedure at the time and it was a failure and messed up my stomach and other organs.I developed Gerd and Esophagus torture.I had the revision to the "Gold Standard" RNY on December 28,2015.I have not dumped once and my acid reflux is gone.I feel great.I take my vitamins and although I am a slow loser because of my PCOS and sluggish thyroid issues I have lost 40 pounds so far....and feel great.I made the right decision .Once the cut out 80% of your stomach.Thats it....By the way my friend had the sleeve and she has complications...vomiting and bad indigestion.Do what you know works. You don't want to have regrets later down the road. -
Post op 6 days - minor complications
Woodslass posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone; So today I am 6 days Post Op and I am seeing my surgeon tomorrow for my first follow up. I'm a little concerned about how I'm healing. I have five incisions - the main one, where the lap band went in, still hurts. Right underneath that incision, I can feel the muscle has swollen and is hard. I don't feel any pain when I am laying down or sitting down in the recliner, but when I stand up straight, shoulders back, I can feel this area pulling and it hurts. Subconsciously, to overcome that feeling, I think my mid-back muscles are trying to hunch and protect this area, and I've got major back pain, which I have never had before. It's not gas, it's the muscles in my back. Also, while eating or right after I eat, I'm sore in the ribs for a little while. Doesn't matter how much I eat or how little, I get sore. I still also feel like I can't take a deep breath when standing upright. Anyone else experience this? I'm definitely going to bring it up tomorrow but it's making me wonder if this pain will every go away, along with the hard lump under my incision. -
Gastric Sleeve done on 8/26/11...Struggling a bit...
sugarmamma7 replied to meggspeggs's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sweetie I am so sorry you are having a rough time. When I came home from the hospital I had those little cups that kind of look like shot glasses. I just did the best I could with drinking from them. I would stop when it hurt and continue drinking after I burped a couple of times. Just listen to your body your sleeve will tell you when you are full. And when you feel like drinking again then do so I didn't worry about a certain time line I just did what I felt was right drinking when my tummy had settled. Be careful not to get dehydrated. Some people had to go get IV fluids in the beginning not trying to scare you just help you be aware of possible complications. Please keep us posted I sure hope you feel better soon. Sending hugs your way... -
I had 5 incisions and I took 7 weeks off of work. I didn't want to go back till I started to eat normal. It was easier to make meals at home and not explain why I was eating broth. Although I had no complications I still get low on energy and take naps in the day.

I too am keeping this entire process a secret with the exception of my DH, my cousin and my nephew. My children are babies but if not they'd know too. My mother has not been told and I probable won't tell her...it's complicated. I have been at this door before with the RNY and I told quite a few people then backed out because I just knew that rearrainging my insides was not the option for me. I'm now getting the sleeve if I can get approved once again by my insurance. This was the surgery I always wanted but the prior surgeon kinda pushed the RNY. Not with that practice anymore. I am a little concerned about when my co-workers notice though and start asking questions. I really don't want to get into it but I work in a small office environment and it's not so easy to say buzz off to these people

Where is everyone from? Are you banded or hoping to be?
Jodie_G replied to Jodie_G's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It's crazy, I think no matter the surgical route, we all seem to have those potholes and detours reaching our weight goals. (I'm certainly no exception and I still have yet to reach my goal. I'll touch on that in a moment.) I haven't had any issue with my band... no leaking, no slipping, and I seem to still be in my sweet spot. I don't overeat like I did pre-band. However, I was eating more than I should for my band. My hiccup was my knee surgeries. I had been in such a groove and rhythm too! I was no stranger to knee issues... one knee underwent numerous outpatient surgeries from an accident at 9 years old. Fast forward to age 39, then I had a microfracture on what was the good knee. Six weeks later I had a knee replacement on what was the bad knee. Bring on the complications from a surgeon that made an error in placing the implant... fast forward two years to a knee replacement on the good knee (dubbed Robot Knee) and then a revision on the bad knee (dubbed FrankenKnee). Prior to the surgeries I was nearly a gym rat and worked out so much. I felt great and the weight was flying off... I had lost 164 pounds. After the surgeries, it took all my energy just achieving the most mundane daily tasks. I had such bad swelling in FrankenKnee it was shutting my muscles down and I now have some atrophy in that leg. Yay. Here I am, 2 years later and finally in a groove. I still can't ride my road or mountain bike and probably never will because I don't have enough flex for the rotation. But, you know how the saying goes... when life gives you lemon make lemonade. Now that I've learned to adapt to what I can do and stopped feeling sorry for myself, I'm back in my groove. I've got 54 pounds that I'd gained to shed... and then it's back to where I left off on my journey prior to my "detour". (I started out the year 74 pounds heavier... so 20 pound loss in 2 1/2 months is something I'm happy with!) Wouldn't it be nice if it was just a straight shot from surgery to goal? We're all strong and resilient and we can do this!!! -
Banded six-1/2 years ago in Monterrey, Mexico by Dr. Roberto Rumbaut. No complications. Always very easy to get in touch with my doctor's office and staff--even 6-1/2 years later, I still get amazing customer service. (For example, I needed a copy of my surgery report a month or so ago... had it within 24 hours.) No issues with follow-up care stateside... it's gotten much easier since I was first Banded. You do need to arrange that in advance, though.
-
I went to Dr. Ortiz and cannot recommend him enough! I didn't have any complications but my personal doctor here knew what was going on and I knew I could call on him if there was an issue that didn't allow me time to get back to Mexico. Just make sure to have anything set up BEFORE YOU GO in case something does go wrong (but honestly, the chances are slim - just have someone around "in case" )

yeah, because u need a special liscence to use radiation. im a healthcare worker... i used to work with radiation, that's why i was so curious. i was also wondering what the complications are with finding the port..... are they sometimes too deep? mobile? something else? congrats on the quitting smoking!

Anyone having trouble getting in touch with BariatricPal Team MX?
Gcarter replied to thabenski's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
My sister had a difficult time getting a hold of someone there but this was after surgery but due to complications she couldn't have surgery. She's still experiencing pain and bruising. I had no problem with surgery and Dr illian was great but it did seem as though it was difficult getting through to someone . Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using the BariatricPal App -
a lot of women experience screwed up cycles the first few weeks or months after surgery because of extra estrogen (or so they say...). Estrogen is stored in fat cells, so it's released during rapid weight loss. For most people, it'll eventually stabilize. However, with your medical history and various meds, your situation may be more complicated than that.

So how did everyone get past any fear you had? I'm so terrified of dying on the table, dying from malnutrition, or complications. On the other hand, I'm so excited that I can't stand it lol I'm having the surgery no matter what but I wanted to know if these feelings are normal or if I'm just being a paranoid psychopath....

Sleeve revision to mini vs full bypass
GreenTealael replied to Missynik's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
No I was originally sleeved but converted to RNY But if you have the sleeve (with no complications) it was originally created to be 1/2 of the DS (and I guess now SIPS) process. RNY Is the progression to control reflux (what I had) If I had weight regain (but no reflux) with my sleeve I would have seriously considered DS/SIPS Speak with your surgeon and they will conduct testing which will ultimately make the final recommendations. Good Luck 💙 -
Is it really worth it?
RJ'S/beginning replied to SleeviePete's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I almost died for the sleeve....5 months in the hospital due to complications.....Had everything go wrong that could....Now 10 months later..... Believe me when I tell you I would do it so fast again it would make your head spin!!!!!!!!!! I can cross my legs. I sleep through the night and am up early everyday. I can now tie my own shoes and sit in a regular chair.... My clothes are a lot smaller then i have worn for years....No one recognizes me at all, no matter where I go i have to tell them it is me...Sometimes I don't and that is entertainment for me...... I do not move the seat back in the car if I am driving. I do not need a belt extender. All my rings don't fit...And now I can wear a 16 in. chain around my neck....Was wearing a 22 in. Chain before..... All the little things that keep happening to me were just a dream I thought! It is my turn now to have my chance to get healthy and active and be thin...I am on my way....I am not saying I am perfect...I make mistakes with the sleeve..But I away's see tomorrow as a new day... For me it was worth all the pain, hardship and expense to be where I am today..... Make sure you are ready for this before you jump in.....It is not for the faint of heart!
