I have to use kale in mine because I'm allergic to spinach. I also by the bags of frozen mixed fruit and it comes out ice cold. The big thing post op will be protein. So I add protein powder to mine to make it complete nutritionally.

I have United, they are a pain. Keep working on the insurance approval and follow exactly what they want. I started at 370, did my 6 months in which I was definitely expected to lose (modified South Beach Diet for 4 months then I ate like it was my last meal! I stayed at about 310 for last couple months.) My surgery was Dec. 10 lost about 37 since then, My goal is to be under my college weight of 227. I am at 269 this morning when I stepped on my home scale before getting dressed. United wants you to prove to them that you are serious about losing weight and that you will keep at it. They require you to go to Diet Dr. or equivalent every month. It was a great way to get used to bariatric foods. I found I could eat plain nonfat greek yogurt with Peanut Butter powder, fresh fruit, or even diet maple syrup mixed in. I learned how to eat 60 grams Protein a day and to follow a tight diet while walking a bunch. I was worried about losing too much, but that is unlikely. My Dr. told me that if I started losing too much she'd put me on a Golden Corral diet for awhile. I also think United wants people to re-consider if they are doing really well on their own diets and NOT get WLS.

I had to do a full 14 days and I have to say it was the hardest two weeks of my life!! All liquid protein. I lost 15 pounds before surgery. So hard.

Are you hitting your targets for fluids and Protein? Are your incisions healing nicely? How are you sleeping? What's bothering you, that should be on your agenda. If you can hit your intake goals, maybe they'll accelerate you to soft/puree. They did for me. -
I get the reduced sugar Quaker Oats maple and brown sugar. Adding protein powder is a great idea. I have the flavorless powder, and don't use it often.

I just tried injury protein shake, what do you guys think of it? I liked it, the nutrionist gave me a sample of the vanilla. Any thoughts???

I was told 60-80 gms per day. And I believe your body can only use so much protein at a time, like 20 gms, so you need to space it out throughout the day. I didn't hear anything about organ failure, but I guess if all you ate was protein your body wouldn't be too happy with you.

The human body cannot use excess Protein, so when you consume too much of it, your kidneys must work extra hard to filter it out of your system. The additional protein can strain your organs and cause kidney stones, especially for those already dealing with kidney disease (diabetics) Kidney stress becomes even more of a concern with age, when organs are no longer functioning as efficiently. It can also lead to renal failure.....young athletes, (high school) feel that excessive protein will make them better athletes....they buy all the body builder fads, then they pass out on the field, and rushed to the ER thinking it may be dehydration but it sometimes means something more serious.....

How much protein are we talking??

Many people have shared that their bands are tighter in the morning, and that sipping on a hot or warm beverage like tea helps loosen their band. Stress is another factor which can influence how tight your band feels. Some days all my meals are not a problem. But I have also experienced days when I had to be on liquids for an entire day. And even a Protein shake took an hour to get down. Do your best to limit your episodes of vomiting, as this will possibly cause additional tightness.

I did one week full fluids and one week clear fluids pre op. I thought it was going to be horrible but I planned out my fluid intake for the entire week and had portions ready to go. I had three protein shakes a day. The one I used has 24 grams of protein, 2 carbs and 110 calls I believe. I had all my broths ready to go. I are the shakes at meal times and the broth and hello in between. What I can tell you is by the 14th day I was not hungry but extremely tired of drinking, even just seeing a glass made me gag. Thankfully it's a relatively short duration so just get through one day at a time and trying planning everything the night ahead. Good luck -
Well, my definition of a slider food is one that doesn't stay in the pouch as long as it should (ie... slide's right through - like a milkshake) Oatmeal is not a slider food for most people because it has some roughage to it. It is an excellent carb and has Protein too! Unfortunately it's one of those foods that give some people real fits. You may have to thin it out to get it to stay down. Brad

I do a pkg of instant oatmeal with no sugar added and a scoop of unflavbored protein. As I am still on mushies it's one of the few things I find "sticks to the ribs" and keeps me satisfied a while.

The drinks are good to help get in extra protein but they aren't going to fill you up. You should be taking in solid protein, if you can. To really feel satiated between meals solid food/protein is what will work. For breakfast, better choices would be eggs, oatmeal (after I cook mine I add a couple egg whites and cook for 2 minutes.. sounds gross but is yummy, then add a couple pecans or walnuts and fruit pieces), there are high protein cereals, Greek yogurt (Dannon Light & Fit is good).... I think that is what your dr. is suggesting, not another drink but an actual meal.

My dr recommends only 1 shake per day and says not to drink your calories. chicken is very high Protein, I like the tyson grilled & ready chicken. 3 oz of it contains 21g of protein and I usually have a little cottage cheese on the side. (1/4 cup of prairie farms, fat free cottage cheese has 40 calories and 7g of protein). 2 large eggs have about 14g protein and add some cheese for another 3-7g of protein. The EAS shakes are pretty good, I love the chocolate fudge flavor! I usually take one of those for lunch at work everyday. I also like super fortress whey protein shakes from WalMart (chocolate, Cookies n cream and vanilla are good...hated the strawberry and the Peanut Butter one is a little bitter but not bad), I also bought some Syntrax nectar protein and it is VERY good!

My understanding to determine your protein need is to multiply your weight by .03. So a 200# person would need 60 grams of protein to maintain their muscle mass. I was also told to eat high quality protein using the ratio of 10 grams per 100 cals aprox. Food that is close to that ratio is good protein,( salmon, eggs, ham, turkey ect).

60 to 80 grams per day for me (shakes and protein rich fods)

there is nothing wrong with the process taking time. And, no, lying was not an option. I've got kids. Lying to doctors to get what I want would be no different than them cheating on tests to get their desired results.

I thought it would be helpful if we shared our best recipes for weight loss. I know that my surgeons office recommends having at least 5 to 6 Protein Shake recipes that you like. I have only just experimented with four. Three of which I like. Also if you find RTD Protein Shakes that actually taste good, I would love to know which ones they are. Here is my favorite Protein shake recipe so far OMG chocolate banana shake One scoop Jay Robb chocolate Protein Powder 1/2 C. vanilla greek yogurt 1/2 to 1 C. skim milk 1/2 banana Put all ingredients together and blend. Depending on how much skim milk you use it has about 350 calories and 41 grams of protein. I love it and do not feel deprived drinking it. It tastes very similar to my favorite malt Chocolate Banana from Ruby's.

Hi all, I am 5 months out and have lost 88lbs which is AWESOME. The whole time though I have been constipated, trying EVERYTHING just to be able to "go" every other day or so but nothing has worked. So I have been using laxatives every weekend to "clean myself out" as I work Monday thru Friday and can''t take them during the week.So unfortunately I can go like 6 days without a BM which is not good. An issue I'm having is the past few weeks, I am not losing like I was the first 5 months and I'm going out of my mind! Example: I weigh myself in the morning when I get up and say my weight is 177.4lb.s. OKay, fine. So I eat a 6oz. yogurt and a few mini rice cakes. And weigh myself say a half hour later (just for this purpose) and my weight goes up to 178.2lb.s!!! This is NOT normal for me! Usually after eating that, my weight wouldn't move at all, or go up maybe an ounce. But now it goes way up, even if I drink a protein shake or water! What's the deal??? Is it because of the constipation and being "FOS" literally?? (I also walk 2 miles a day on top of a very active 8 hour job.) Another example is yesterday, I weighed 177.6lbs in the morning. I had 2 protein shakes, water and 8oz. oatmeal throughout the whole day. I weighed myself that night around 10pm and my weight was 179.2lbs! Now I know weight fluctuates during the day and that's fine, but this is NOT NORMAL for me. Can someone PLEASE help me figure this out?? I'm losing faith in myself and having any more weight loss and I have 47lbs still to lose! PLEASE HELP! DESPERATE! thank you Source: 5 months and HOPELESS! Please help!

People all vary and so do the diets required by Dr's. I lost about 15 to 20 pre-op by following low cal/low fat for two weeks and then doing one week of two protein shakes, two Greek yogurts, and one protein bar daily. I did cheat occasionally on the liquid portion as my Dr only required low fat diet. I also started exercise, as I had read of people who lost little in the first couple months and wanted to at least get some weight off if I was going to fall in that category.

I'm 2 weeks post op and I'm starting to drink smoothie kings gladiator 20oz for my protein. Does anyone know if that stretches your sleeve?? Obviously I get full very fast but I keep drinking to try and get my protein in... I drink a little more than half and then I cant take it anymore!
