    Head Hunger...

I think of all the things that we bandsters have to deal with, head hunger, followed by patience, is the hardest part of this journey to becoming healthier. We tie everything into food, - happy, sad, stress, boredom. We seldom get together with friends or family without food playing a major role in those activities. No wonder we always have head hunger! I have been banded 11 months now. It has taken me all this time to finally reach my sweet spot last week with fill # 5. I have lost slowly and it has been very frustrating at times, but I am losing. Head hunger, and real hunger have been a big problem for me as my band was not adjusted properly until now. This past week has been wonderful! I am no longer body hungry. The band is finally doing the job it was meant to do. I have had a few bouts of head hunger, but I am amazed at how few and how weak the bouts have been. So I guess you can really say that when properly adjusted, the band helps you there too. I know I have a lot more work to do in sorting out my old habits and discovering what exactly triggers those head hunger episodes. I heard once that someone said "we adults use food to soothe." I agree. "We have replaced the pacifiers we used as infants with food". We need to discover why we need this pacification, and how we can use non-destructive means to soothe us when necessary. I believe head hunger will disappear over a long time, but as any habit, it will need a lot of commitment, patience and work. Good luck to you on your journey to a healthier you! You can do it! Katja

    June 27 surgery date

Congrats on the new date!!! I just have a week of two shakes and some food like a lean cuisine or smart one. My pre-op is Thursday and my surgery is June 25th. Good luck with your surgery and recovery.
  4. So over the weekend I started to feel awful, developed abdominal pain, kind of like being kicked in the stomach every time I moved and food was worse when I ate or drunk something. I'm 8wks post RNY bypass and have been eating solid food for a couple of weeks now. I went into hospital on tuesday, after trying antibiotics for a couple of days, and had a CT scan which showed thickening of my jejunum. Slight raising of my inflammatory markers but no white cells or temperature, so not an infection. After three days in hospital the conclusion is that I had been too ambitious with my solid food and my new anatomy wasn't coping that well... Anyway I wondered if anyone else had had a similar experience or learning?
  5. 8 weeks post op? What where you eating? and where you chewing it up really well? I thought 8 weeks was fine to start eating

Reasons to be/not to be banded?

First of all, I never thought to myself, I may want it out before I ever got it. I did have some fears of course, I think that is natural. I know you are asking the people who wanted it or got it out but I wanted to tell you how I feel now that I am a couple months post op. I have absolutely no regrets at this point and I am thrilled I had the surgery. I was a person who for the last three years couldn't even yo yo diet. I was just heading up the scale period. Oral steriods for a skin condition and thyroid disease made it totally impossible to lose weight or even maintain weight. I am on my way down the scale and wouldn't change my experience so far for anything. Not saying I haven't worked hard for it because I have but at least now I have results which I couldn't get before. I think it is ok to be nervous and have fears but I also believe you have to want it bad enough and be willing to take whatever conseqences come with it (bad or good) and deal with it when it happens. If I have problems down the road then I will handle them when I get there. I hope you find the answers you are looking for and can decide once and for all if the band is right for you. Good Luck!
  7. My stools were always hard prior to banding and the constipation has only gotten worse. I have done all the tricks, more water, shredded wheat, fiber, veggies, benefiber, ground flax seed, etc. Nothing seems to have a long term effect. Once a week I have to have a dose of MOM or take a dose or two of ducolax to get things flowing.
  8. Everything went really well today. I feel great! I hope the next few weeks go just as smoothly.
  9. I get sleeved on 9-20-2012. I get moments of anxiety where I question whether I've made the right decision or not. I know that I have. I guess I'm faced with this same anxiety when it comes to any big decision in my life. I start my liquid diet this Thursday the 6th for two weeks. Friday is Pre-Op. Friday the 14th is my EGD and then the 20th is D-Day! I went through a whole month of waiting for the appointments to get here and now they are here and the anxiety is sneaking in! I guess I'm excited AND scared at the same time . I am looking forward to being healthy. It's not a size or a look that is my goal. It is to be off medications and living healthy. I want to have the ability to go for a walk with my husband and not worry about passing out 1/2 way through the adventure. I want to go to the zoo without passing out or having to sit every 5 minutes because of back and knee pain. I want to fly without infringing upon my neighbor's space. It's been too long coming for me. Early on when I made my decision to get sleeved, I went out and purchased some protein powder and a few other things 'just to see' how horrific it was going to be. Honestly, it isn't going to be that bad for me. Since I HATE chocolate and sweets for the most part, it's going to be hard for that reason. I don't think the protein shakes are that horrible especially since I'll be using Vanilla flavored and you can add just about anything to that to make it palatable and versatile. My husband and grown sons are amazing with their support. Only one other person knows and he is a co-worker. The only reason I told him is because he's getting sleeved on 10-23-2012. We'll be sleeve partners at work. I'm lucky in that respect. The only thing that I worry about is when the pounds start dropping off that I don't sabotage myself. I see a bit of success and then I have to go and ruin it by overeating to celebrate. Crazy, I know. I can do this. I will succeed. This forum has really been a source of comfort and knowledge. I thank you all!
  10. I am down exactly 40lbs! This is including my 1 week pre op diet! So excited for the future! 60 more to go!

    Plantar Fasciitis ?

Oh. bless you! It hurts so bad! I had a bout with it less than a year ago. It took time to heal with lots of stretching every morning and night. My doctor had me get special inserts and wear tennis shoes for weeks. I was lucky to not have to wear the boot, use crutches or have surgery. Of course the first remedy was lose weight! This happened during my 6 months supervised diet, so I was limited in how much I could lose without getting denied for my band. I hope with the weight coming off, that I never have to have an issue with my foot again. I wish you all the best!

    Grazing..

Track, track, track. Tracking everything into myfitnesspal, keeps me accountable. I am only 8 weeks out now and I still eat Snacks and meals. I rarely hit 700 calories a day even with a glass of real Gatorade and because I can only have 1-2 ounces of food at a time, I do "graze" without apology. I don't get in all my Protein or my fluids yet, but I am getting better every day. I figure as long as what I am "snacking" on is protein and healthy, it's not a big deal. Don't beat yourself up unless you are snacking on crap. If that is the case, I will pass you the boxing gloves.

    Almost 3 weeks post-op

I have/had that problem as well. My surgeon said that nausea was part of the process and that it would get better. I am almost 3 weeks out and still have some nausea. I take Zofran when it just gets intolerable. Call you surgeon and ask him for some. ???? Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App

    Almost 3 weeks post-op

Thanks guys. I had actually picked up a virus and was dehydrated. I went in and got a prescription and four bags of Fluid. I had lost 30 pounds in just over three weeks. Which is good, but I didn't do it the best way. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Meds To Prevent Gallstones

I just talked to my GI doc today and he wants me to take it starting 1 week prior to surgery. He says the pills can be crushed and mixed as a slurry or added to whatever I am drinking. I know stones can form pretty fast. I looked at my gallbladder after 36 days on the HCG diet and it was bright white with sludge. I decided to stop there instead of going to 40 days. Ate steak and contracted it pretty good, but took one more fatty meal to return it to normal. I don't think my GB will make it too long without help. I really want to keep it. Hope this medicine works.
  18. I feel your pain . I too was banded on 11/27 and due to the swelling really wasn't hungry until saturday and then it was overwhelming! I got really cranky with my hubby for making his dinner and making me smell it, I made him eat it upstairs-LOL. This forum is so helpful because it sounds like everyone is hungry during this phase and we just have to bite the bullet. We WILL get thru this and be better for it. I can't wait until mushies phase this weekend tho!! FIll is suppose to be 6 weeks from surgery date. Best of luck to you and everyone getting through this starvation phase.
  19. Hi everyone! My name is Pam, I'm from the Dallas area, and I was sleeved on 6/25/2013. My husband was sleeved on 5/6/13. It all started in August of last year. Two of my co-workers had VSG done during the same week (unbeknownst to the other!). Both of them weighed significantly less than me. Call it my wake up call. I had to finally accept the fact that I am morbidly obese at a BMI of 45. I went home that evening and told my husband I was interested in this "new" weight-loss surgery. I had never been interested in the bypass because I couldn't stand the thought of dumping syndrome. The sleeve surgery sounded perfect. To my surprise, he not only approved of my interest, but said he was interested too! We went to a seminar held by Dr. Nick Nicholson. That evening, we made our decision. My husband even told me he wanted to go first. He said because he had more to lose. I think he didn't want to chicken out after he saw me go through it! Since his surgery, he has lost 84 pounds, including pre-op diet. I have lost 44.8 pounds, including pre-op. I started my pre-op diet when he started his, so I lost quite a bit more than I would have otherwise. Reasons for wanting to lose weight (besides the obvious): We have 3 children: two teenage daughters and a 7 year old daughter. We have hardly any energy to do fun things with them, especially the youngest, who has ADHD. Going out to see fireworks last night was a big family outing for us! I am so excited and happy. I know this time I will succeed and get to my goal of at least 150 pounds. I want to have energy to give my children quality time. I am also grateful to have found this forum. I also attend a support group at work. I am a nurse who works for a health insurance company. We have a LOT of nurses who have had this surgery, especially since our insurance covers it. It is great to meet twice a month and compare notes.

!3 weeks after being banded and I saw my primary care Dr and she had be do some blood work. I just checked the results and all my numbers are in the normal range. My glucose is down to normal, A1C is down from diabetic to just pre-diabetic a whole point and a half, cholesterol is normal. Having my clothes become loose and had to get a smaller size bra. Even though I'm in a plateau, I'm seeing big results!

    Bariatric Advantage ?

One of the reps was at a support group I went to this past week. She didn't say much about Protein stuff, but we did sample some of their Vitamins. They were not too bad - the calcium chew thing was outstanding! I did want to mention that she talked about a pre-op Vitamin that they make that helps get your levels evened out and gets you used to taking a supplement. I am not sure how it tastes because we did not sample that one, but it might be worth looking into. Good luck!

    I think I screwed up

Thanks! I did call today and they think I swallowed too big of a bite of mashed potatoes and it caused esophagus spasms. I was hurting until this afternoon and then ate a pudding and a few hours later I SLOWLY ate my mashed potatoes. I feel pretty good now but I really do think I am a little swollen as I feel like I am post-op week 2 instead of week 4. Thanks for the answers
