Hoping to get Banded in Morris MN

Hi: Did you know that Dr. Fortier told me that he has battled his weight his whole life, and that he feels he does understand. Sherry said and I agree that we often can initially lose the weight on our own, but can't keep it off--that's where the Band will really come in handy. I am one week post surgery now and feeling great. I had lost about 35 pounds prior to the surgery, first on a salad only diet then on the required 10 day liquid pre surgery diet. I have lost 5 pounds already the first week after surgery. I still feel full most of the time yet which is great--I used to be hungry all of the time!!! The post op liquid diet is so much easier when you have already been on it for 10 days before!! I am starting to add some cream Soups and etc and it is going well. I too agree that Dr. F has more rules than some of the doctors we read about on this forum, but so far, as "challenging" as the rules have been, I feel I am in very good, cautious hands by someone who cares deeply about what they are doing and wants success stories. He only gives lectures if you aren't following the program, otherwise it's praise all the way!! I am just grateful that there is a doctor in our area that decided to learn how to do the surgery--as far as I know, there isn't even anyone doing the surgery in Fargo yet!! Pray to be willing "to be willing"!--it works!!!! Best wishes, Nancy

    Post Op Paranoia

I was a freak worrying about both leaks and clots. The blood clot worry went away after a few weeks. But almost 10 weeks post op i still think about leaks. Every little ache or anything gets my mind working. Definitely not as worried as i was the first 6 weeks. I follow the rules pretty tight, and i chew everything to applesauce consistency.
  3. Was sleeved 12/10 lost 16lbs the first week and a half. Haven't lost a thing since. Some days it goes up a pound or so then we'll come back down. But hasn't gone any lower than my initial lowest. I've been following my plan, I'm on purees now, should I be concerned or is this normal? I was thinking maybe I would call my nut on Monday just to check with them. Any thoughts? I hear about the 3 week stall how long does it last?

Have to do a 50 Carbs per day dier

eggs fish, and low to no carb protein drinks. My pre op diet was a meal replacement protein shake for breakfast and lunch, and then I ate 3-4oz. tilapia fillets for dinner. Did this for 10 days, lost 12lbs. Drink water in between meals to reduce cravings and hunger. Also drinking ice water burns more calories then room temp water.

    FINALLY! It's Happened 2 Me!

THANK YOU Ladies, for your enthusiasm and support! :tt1: I'm sooooo excited. I was told today that I may be able to have surgery as soon as 10/16. I have to wait until my dr. returns from vacation for it to be confirmed. I'm trying not to think about it too much. I don't want to be disappointed if that date doesn't work out. Thanks again!
  7. :confused_smile:Hello-- I am very new to this. I am about 3 1/2 weeks out and not scheduled for my fill until 10/30. My husband had surgery 1 week before I did. He's doing GREAT!! No problems. No nausea. No vomiting. He's lost about 30 pounds so far. I've lost about 23, but have had more issues. Haven't thrown up any, but still having some in my upper abdomen (not sharp pain, more discomfort) and having episodes of nausea, and the gas is HORRIBLE. I just thought maybe I could chat with some normal people and not just my husband who appears to be superman! Somebody please just tell me this gets better. I'm kinda scared of my first fill if it gets worse than this. Susan Banded 9-15-05, Dr Kim, Ft Worth, Texas

    Fill Visit today:(

Hang in there. I havent lost much either (3-5 lbs in 2 months) i've had to fills and now have 5cc in a 10 cc band, and it's not enough, i still dont have enough restriction at all. i can eat over a cup of food if i eat slow enough. i know thats the choice i make, i can't stop myself, so i lose SLOW. i go for a fill in 3 weeks and i will be lucky if i'm down a pound. of course i dont exercise as much as i should. i want to be realistic about this, i know i wont be a gym person or a marathon runner, so why dump money into it now so i can fizzle out of it in 6 months. if i lose slow, i figure it will be a normal slow, not a run around with my head cut off, exercise freak, fast losing different me. i want to stay me, but in a smaller body. does that make sense? anyways, i just hope my next fill will be the ticket. good luck shurmeka.
  9. Hi there. I just wanted to say that I see it differently than some, I don't think it has anything to do with 'good intentions'. What your parents did to you was abuse, plan and simple. It was physical and emotional abuse, physical via a medical procedure that you did not want or need, and emotional in the sense that they were not reinforcing your reportedly positive pre-surgery body image. I too am curious where you are from though, since, in my country at least, 18 is the age of adulthood and one's parents could not complete paperwork or even be that involved in a process such as this - the surgeon would have been required to speak with you directly, and any ethical surgeon would have picked up on your reservations and lack of enthusiasm. At the same time, you were 19 and some would say that you were old enough to excercise free will. That is why I am hesitant to call it 'child abuse', because you are not a child. Either way, I am sorry to hear of your experience and hope you have resolved the situation and are looking forward to a brighter future! Good luck and keep us posted.

Anyone forced to have LB & hate having it all the time?

I have never heard anything this crazy! Especially knowing what I (and everyone else) had to go thru to get approved. And at the age of 19 you can just say No and not have it done. I agree that there is a lot of holes in this story and that she needed to open her mouth when she was in the meeting. Lord knows No one would make any decisions for me without my approval. ~~~~~ On the other Hand~~~~~ I'm so thankful I have found this site. Is there anyone out there from Florida? I am in Bradenton and looking for some local support to go with this site I can't wait to be banded!
  11. Hi, Kalamazoo, do you live there, I do. it would be nice to talk together. I was banded at Borgess on May 31, 2007 and am having some restriction after one fill of 4cc in my 10 cc band. Dr. Verseman did the banding. maybe we can talk?

Anyone forced to have LB & hate having it all the time?

Possible, but doubtful. A 19 year old is forced to get surgery? Upon admission to a hospital the forms have to be signed by the patient in front of hospital staff. The hospital staff have to cosign the forms as a witness. Yet the claim is the forms were signed before ever entering the hospital by someone else. There were a lot of people in on this conspiracy, far too many people. Then there is the waiver saying she can never get it out... none of this makes sense. Sorry, it just doesn't. There are soooo many holes in this one. I'd love to hear the other side of the story.
  13. Hello! I understand your frustration. I, too, was a very slow loser for the first month. If you keep your Protein and Water intake where it should be, the weight will eventually begin to melt away. I'm almost 11 mos. post op and have lost about 80 lbs since my day of surgery. Even at a month post op I seriously questioned my ability to shed the pounds other VSG patients do. While others were losing 20+ lbs per month, I was losing 5-10. In the end, I couldn't be happier and I know you will feel the same next summer! Best wishes on your journey. Lisa
  14. I know it's frustrating to read about people who seem to be losing HUGE amounts of weight in the first month or two, if you're not one of them. But honestly, there are so many factors that go into how much you'll lose and how fast. Men lose faster (damn them!). People with a higher starting BMI lose faster. Younger people seem to me to lose faster. People who didn't have a larger pre-op loss seem to lose faster initially (because the first 10 pounds of any weight loss is mostly water). Some people who are losing faster may be losing muscle mass as well as fat, which will slow down their weight loss later (because muscle mass makes your resting metabolism higher). And some people stall earlier, some people stall later. What's important to remember is, you will lose the weight. It may take longer to come off for some of us (I lost about 15 pounds the first month, 10 the second, and 7 so far in the 3rd month), but it's going to come off, and it will come off consistently, without you feeling like you're starving all the time, and it's going to stay off. Yes, maybe you've been on crash diets where you lost faster, for a little while, and how long did that last? Stick to your surgeon's plan, give your body the liquids and protein it needs (you want to keep the protein up so you maintain muscle mass, which will keep your metabolism from slowing down), take a deep breath, and remember it's not a race, and it's not a diet. This is for the rest of your life. You want to be learning good eating and exercise habits, and learning how to live with your new sleeve and eat for life, not live to eat. And if you're still feeling like a slow loser, check out this thread on slow users unite - you're in good company, and it's full of people who are successful sleevers! http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/11308-the-good-thing-about-being-a-slow-loser/

7 months post op and pregnant

I experienced this same thing...back in Oct of '01 I had WLS and in Mar of '02 found out I was expecting. What a shocker! Not only was I a recent WLS patient, but I had high blood pressure, and I was approaching 40. Now 11 years later I have a beautiful daughter that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world! Here's what I can tell you about my experience...I did continue to lose weight during my pregnancy. I did have gestational diabetes, but that is not uncommon. My advice is to make sure you have an OB/GYN that is familiar with WLS (mine actually did a bariatric rotation with my weight loss surgeon). Don't forget to take care of yourself. The demands of a pregnancy and taking care of a newborn can be so overwhelming and for me it was very easy to lose sight of my weight loss goals. I just had a revision in November and although I don't regret it, I sure don't recommend it. Take care of yourself now. Don't lost sight of your goals. What you do now to take care of yourself will make you a better mom. Enjoy your pregnancy, but take care of yourself!
  16. Happy2Lose, Thanks for your reply. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one losing in spurts. I see many posts that people lose 2 pounds per week, and I wonder if that's an average, or they lose steadily!?! Lately I have the bad habit of weighing often. I think your advice of weighing less frequently is exactly right! I'll have to work on that  I also figured that approximately 10 lbs per month is my goal, but it just scares me sometimes when the scale stops moving for 2 weeks. Having been overweight for so long, it's devastating. I guess I have to try and calm down, and just keep going with it! So far I've lost an average of 10 per month, so I'm doing well. I just don't want it to stop until I"m closer to goal! Lisa

    Starting Pre-op diet

Hi, I had to do a milk and yogurt diet for 10 days prior to my band op and again for my revision. I found that the best way for me to cope with it was to have a complete blow-out the night before of my favourite takeaway and then I was sorted and my head was in the right place to get on with the pre-op! I had milk for Breakfast, milk for lunch and milk for tea. I didn't have much yogurt as I can't stand the taste or consistency but I did have the odd oxo cube to satisfy my cravings for savoury. I heated the milk up, whisked it like mad and had it with coffee as a Cappuccino, I drank whenever I felt hungry or had a craving, I let my family prepare their own meals and went upstairs whilst they ate and did everything I could to keep occupied and not thinking about food. I was also mindful of the fact that my liver needed to shrink for the op and that my surgeon would know if I hadn't stuck to the diet and would possibly cancel as a result. I kept this in mind all the time that by doing this it would make the op easier and safer to perform. It's not easy but just keep thinking about why you want this op and that you are going to succeed. You can have a moan on here anytime you want and we will all support you! Good luck!

    Surgery on July 10th

I'm on day 2 of the shrinking Kendra diet. We will survive. My surgery is set for July 11. I have 10 days well actually 9!!!!
  19. I think the key is not trying to find a Bariatric doctor for post-op care. Just a primary care provider or family doctor. All they have to do is take out stitches 7-10 days after surgery and then blood panels every few months. My PCP just took out my stitches two days ago and said that there would be no need for a blood panel before two months post op. So I will schedule that a few days prior.
  20. I drank soda every day since I was old enough to hold a can without dropping it until I was 19 years old. Then, one day, I quit cold turkey. I have a suggestion- one that worked and continues to work for me every day. Drink ~WATER~. I know you are thinking 'duh.' But, hear me out. I don't mean replace soda with Water (although that's the ultimate goal) but rather, tell yourself, "Ok, I can still have soda - one or two cans a day for now - but I must drink 64 oz of water daily along side the soda." This means you will need to drink 64 oz of water + whatever soda you want. Why does this work? Because your body craves soda whenever it's thirsty; it has learned to drink soda in order to quench the desire for liquids. If you can keep from being thirsty, you can go a very long way in overcoming the desire to drink soda. It's a much easier process than trying to simply give up soda, because you aren't depriving yourself of something you want but rather giving yourself something you need. Eventually soda should become so unimportant to you that you can just give it up cold turkey without really missing it at all. Ok, so onto the caffiene addiction. I empathize. That's a difficult one. I neglected to note above that when I first went off of soda, without realizing it, I replaced the caffiene in Soda with caffiene pills - No Doze. Eventually (2 years ago) I overcame that addiction as well. To ovecome that particular addiction, I had to do it very slowly. I began cutting the dosages of No-Doze that I took every day until eventually I no longer needed caffiene at all. It took a solid month to get to that point, but it was worth it. I can't stand the idea of living life each day on a rollercoaster of caffiene ups and downs. I actually suggest kicking the soda habit before the caffiene habit. Soda is easy to overcome, caffiene is a real drug and will take time to overcome. In the mean time, try drinking black ice tea or coffee on occasion to keep the withdrawal symptoms from rearing their ugly heads (and they are ugly- I know because I've been there). Once you no longer crave soda, you can begin working on the caffiene addiction if you feel you need to.
  21. My surgery is a week from today and I woke up with a totally sore throat.....it's almost swollen shut. No fever or any other symptoms I am praying it's allergies. I called my surgeon's office today and OF COURSE didn't get a call back. I know most times surgery can't be done when you are sick but I also don't want to take my medicine since I was supposed to be off everything except my blood pressure meds 10 days before surgery After working so hard to get to this point since last May I do not want to be denied last minute!! Anyone know if it's okay for me to take allergy/cold meds? or any natural remedies okay for me to do? I am on the liver shrink diet so didn't want to even try honey

    EGD Monday

Monday I have to be @ the surgical center for 10:30am. I’m nervous because I’ve never been put to sleep before. How long does the procedure usually last?

    New...and Scared!!

I was also very nervous about "going under", but it all happens so fast and all the people are so kind and understanding that your fears just slip to the back of your mind. Next thing you know, you are waking up and it's all done! I too had a c-section, and I can tell you that there is no comparison. You will feel just fine, although a bit sore. I had my band done on Feb. 1st and am back to my regular routine. I get my first fill on the 28th, but have already lost 10 lbs. I guess it's that super delicious liquid diet! Don't be afraid - it will be the best thing you can do for yourself and the ones you love.
  24. Hi Rachel... Sorry for the reply being so late I just realized that there were responses to my posts. Still learning the ropes here in this website. So you should be banded now how did that go for you? You feeling better now? It has been almost two months since I was banded and it has been an experience to say the least. Yes I know of the frustration you have with your friends and family I to have had that with my friends some saying that they think once the hype wears off on this that I will regret what I have done (this being said from a friend who doesn't have weight issues) needless to say I don't really talk to her much anymore especially not about my weight loss surgery. And then the others that have weight issues I think maybe are a little jealous but are still supportive. My parents and other family have been 100% supportive of my decision. I have only been overweight for the past 10 years other than that I never had a weight problem but I don't see this as an easy way out, its something that had to be done at least for me due to being diagnosed as Pre-Diabetic that scared me to hear that and weight is one of the hardest things to get rid of. So write back when you can I look forward to hearing about your outcome and how you are dealing with this. Michelle :Dancing_wub:
  25. Hello ladies! My name is Rachel and I am getting banded this coming Friday. I'm super excited and super nervous. I don't know anyone else who is going through this and was hoping to find someone to go through it together. I read your posts and thought I should try to reach out. Anyway, my dr only has me on the pre-op liquid diet for two days (which adds to my nervousness because most posts I have come across say 2 weeks. Interestingly, I havent even had the surgery yet and I have split reactions from my friends and co-workers. I feel like I am being negatively judged, like people think this is an easy way out... It's quite frustrating and disheartening and makes me second guess the decision. However, I am doing this. I am tired of struggling and beating myself up for failure after failure. I am really excited about this new chapter and hope that I can find a support system that understands my situation. (my husband is very supportive, but at his worst was 10, maybe 15 lbs overweight. But he just gets on a treadmill for a couple weeks, and it falls off no problem). Ok, guess I should stop rambling and see what happens. Good luck to us all!
