Just got home from my second endoscopy. (stricture)
pik replied to pik's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a lot of other health issues and I think the first dr was going for the band because it is something that could be reversed if need be. He does all of the surgeries. I somehow seemed to get him on call when I ended up back in the hospital a couple of times. He did a friend of mines sleeve and her husbands bypass and they have done fine. My dr just kept telling me to have patience because he felt like my hernia repair was a little tight and needed time to loosen but I felt like it must be a stricture. I even told him a couple of weeks ago things were tightening up again and he kind of acted like that couldn't be the case. I am so thankful for the first dr. He is the only one that is listening to me these days! He is being pro-active at this point and even admitting that none of them appreciated the fact that it could have been a stricture so early in the game. You know I lost some weight prior to the surgery and the rest after. I also had a 3 week stall. -
I was leaning toward the sleeve but after talking with the surgeon have decided on bypass. My surgery is scheduled for 12/1 and I can hardly wait. I have some medical comorbidities that have been getting worse in the past 7 months. I just want to be out of pain and get my life back.

One of the things my surgeon wanted me to do was to have a meal with a person that had had the surgeries I was considering. It was my homework assignment. Ironically, I had done that before seeing her. I had dinner with a guy 3 months out from the sleeve and one year out from the bypass. Granted the time they were postop made a huge difference, but it definitely swung me toward the bypass. He could eat a cup of food, was more compliant than the sleeve and seemed happier. I'm also basing this on the knowledge of the individuals too....I don't know but maybe it could be enlightening for you somehow.....

Good Morning All.... I had my bypass on May 5th, so tomorrow morning I will be exactly one week out. It has definitely been a week of ups and downs (although mainly ups). Surgery went better and quicker than expected as I also had a large hernia repaired at the same time. I also was released from the hospital a day earlier than I had expected. So things were looking great! Thursday was great but Friday was my day from hell. Everything hurt so bad, and I felt that I could barely move. By Sunday I felt like I was back on the upswing. I was able to walk my block outside without having to stop and catch my breath. I could stand up without feeling like my stomach was dropping to my feet and I was able to enjoy a wonderful mother's day with my family. This morning was the first morning I didn't struggle to roll over in bed or have pain sitting up to get out of bed. So I think I'm starting off my week great. Just one problem...... I still have not gone to the bathroom since surgery. Is this normal? I know I have only had liquids, and am peeing regularly. I am a little concerned as before surgery I took Milalax every morning with my coffee. Maybe I should start taking it again?? Any advice? (btw, down 10 pounds since surgery and 34 pounds total! )

Since most of us are off restriction on what we can do... does anyone wanna do a November exercise challenge? Like I hope to do 3000 steps on the wii fit 5 days a week for November. Which would total 60,000 steps. Anyone wanna join me? BTW I can do that in 30 minutes max. So it's a total of 600 minutes for a month, 10 hours. teri

I’m 4 weeks post bypass and I feel like when I drink water it causes me pain. Almost feels like a terrible gas pain or a hunger pang. But it takes a few minutes to go away. It’s interfering with my hydration. I’m not sure why or what to do. Anyone go through this? Any advice?

I know of a gal who had bypass. She also lost all taste for coffee after years of being a big fan. Five months post-op, she now likes iced coffee, but not hot coffee. She never liked iced coffee before! So, it's just another anecdote that our tastes may bounce around wildly for a while. I'm wondering if any folks become sensitive to odors post-op, to foods, fragrance, whatever... I'm a coffee fan, so I will just keep trying coffee again every month if it happens to me.

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield BcBs Requirements Link
Brian_Rodriguez posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
Hi All, I work for Verizon Wireless, and have Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BcBs). My initial consultation was 12/23/13, I was able to see all the specialist and get approval by 1/14/14. The paper work was submitted to my insurance on 1/23/14... I am bitting nails (not literally) waiting to hear back!!!! I am scheduled for RnY gastric bypass on 2/26/14. I am so anxious, nervous, and excited, but my initial worries are the insurance approval. Has anyone ran into problems with Anthem?? Help!!! LOL -

How long should I wait before I want to get surgery part 2? Has anyone ever done it?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Megan Renee Behnke's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the same question. I wasn't aware of a part two of the bypass. The only one I've heard of is the Duodenal Switch (I think) which has the sleeve as the first part. Since so many people had success with the sleeve procedure they started offering it as a stand alone procedure (or so I've heard). -
I will having my band over bypass on May 10th, so its this Friday! Super nervous. Anyone else?

getting off of the PPIs
Tiffykins replied to feedyoureye's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm such a rebel LOL. No seriously, I'm still on Nexium, was on Prilosec until January, and switched to Nexium after a gastritis attack. Anyways, I have had breakthrough reflux a few times, and it's hell. Plus, I was told to never stop "cold turkey", but to wean off when I decided to do so. I "might", heavy on the might, wean off after the baby is born in November which will put me at almost 2.5 years out. From the other vets, they noticed their hunger came back, and they had to cut certain foods. Well, I live on spicy foods, so I haven't weaned off yet. I kept saying "oh I'll wean off when I hit X months out", but never followed through with it after reading others that had tried before me. Admittedly, the hunger returning scares me more than reflux (well except with reflux there is the lovely Barretts esophagus issues), but we'll see how I feel in November/December of this year. -

How long for insurance approval?
LessOfMe0503 replied to LessOfMe0503's topic in Insurance & Financing
I would head back to work in about 7 weeks time... but the first week of that would be without kids. The doctors office knows that I'm hoping to do it in july/ early august. One of my friends had bypass on August 1 of last summer and she didn't miss any work. Have you had your surgery? -
Nope, no list. There probably more than 50 doing it now but a lot of them are newcomers with little experience. Many of them treat their sleeve patients exactly like their bypass patients too, which is annoying. :001_tt2:

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about the complications you've had following your bypass surgery. Now my curiosity is up concerning the hot flashes after surgery. I am getting hot flashes like crazy, but mostly at night when I'm sleeping. They are so annoying and uncomfortable. I am hot, so I kick the covers off, then I get cold... and it can just continue like that for hours, which is really tough because I'm losing sleep. Makes me feel like poop the next day. Anyway, I had my bypass revision around May 1st of this year. I guess the hot flashes started about 2 months ago. I am starting to wonder if I am perimenopausal, although I don't have any of the usual "symptoms" other than the hot flashes. I am 47 and had a hysterectomy 8 years ago, but my surgeon left my ovaries. Not much help to ya, but wanted to jump in on this topic since I'm experiencing something similar. I might dig around and find some of the posts/conversation on this topic. Wish you the best, get well soon and congratulations on your bypass surgery.

Surgery Final Costs and Food
SGirl35 replied to dyensters22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, so i live in a big coastal city myself, and just had my bypass. I’ll tell you, yes, it’s a funeral for food. I always ate all kinds of things, and now I’m full off of 2oz of water.. your new stomach doesn’t have room for much else. I have no idea how people are drinking alcohol and eating other stuff.. you’ll feel very sick if you do. But this is the cost of wanting to get health or small.. however, other friends of mine who had bypass, after one year or more, eat and drink pretty normal now.. they just haven’t kept their weight off all the way... as for insurance? I’m in California and have medi-Cal , so in all covered. Only payed for vitamins and my shakes. -
Hi! I have had two appointments so far for weight loss surgery and I'm still not 100% sure which surgery I want to have, the sleeve or the bypass. I have Aetna in Ohio for my surgery (I work for the State) and was wondering if anyone here had bypass surgery and could share with me what their out of pocket was for the surgery? Thanks! Taking a lot of things into consideration with this process. Second question: what are you realistically able to eat? Is this going to be a funeral to food once this surgery is done? I've heard of people a year out eating a handful of almonds and a water for lunch and being so full. Is that the extent of the eating experience I will have? I'm kind of a foodie and live in an amazing culinary city. I know all things in moderation and all that, but will I literally not be able to dine any longer once I have this surgery? Thanks for all the feedback, extremely new at this, and appreciate anything you'd be willing to share. Thanks!
