almost 2 months out and at a stall
julia19642 replied to Maloo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think almost all of us tend to hit plateaus at one time or another. What usually breaks a plateau for me is varying my exercise routine and my food. Sometimes i get in a rut with doing the same food day in and day out due to lack of inspiration in cooking. Maybe if you could describe your exercise routine and an example of your meals, someone could help you with a change in plan. Sometimes the plateaus break for no good reason at all....(in MY case). I was on a plateau last month for amost 3 weeks. I'm 4 months out of surgery. Yes, it can be very frustrating, but just hang in there and don't comfort yourself with poor food choices. All of a sudden the weight just started falling off again. Hang in there....hopefully someone will have some good ideas for you. -
Hello, I'm new to this forum and starting research into it. Can't excercise due to multiple disk bulges in spine, so this could be a huge help! I'm sick of my huge stomach. I also have a child w/ Aspergers so I need to be around for as long as possible. Don't need a lot of risk or down time in recovery. How many of you have had a lot of weight loss w/ this? Glad to find you all. :rolleyes2:

closer to a decision!! statistics in lap band favour
nerolid posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well I'm getting closer to a decision - through trolling through the internet I've discovered some interesting statistics. Apparently 90 - 95% of people who lose weight through diet and exercise alone will gain it back within 5 years (def been the way it's worked for me!! - but add a few extra kilo's as well!). But from what I've read (and I understand that you can't take the info on the internet as gospel truth!) approx 30% of those who have had weight loss surgery regain the weight. Sounds like much better odds to me! If I'm going to put the effort into losing weight AGAIN - I want it to be permanent this time! -
Lap Band Problem - Considering removal
divorced5048124 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I just created a bio with all my issues but can't find it so here goes ... I had my sur. Nov,2004. I have had only one unfill in that whole time. I had a thyroidectomy May 27th, 2008. I am a cancer survivor and now cancer free but in the three months post op that surgery, I gained 30# and am having problems getting it off and I have abnormal CBC lab values low hemoglobin and hematocrit and elevated white count and more than doubled platelets. I have subsequently had an upper GI and lower last month resulting in (from biopsy) a lot of undigested food above the band, a bacterial infection of the stomach lining, and diverticulitis. I am on Tetracycline, Biaxin, and Previced for 14 days. I am in pain and my abdomin looks like an eight month pregnacy. I have had much pain in my life as I have lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, diabetes and few lesser issues. Those are the heavy hitters. I think I am going to have the band removed because if there is undigested food above the band the infection will reoccur. Has anyone had theirs removed???? -
Newly Banded -- Weight Loss Has SLOWED!
OnTheWay to Thin replied to laurenm's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
This is normal, your first week or so you are on liquids and it is very hard to get the necessary calories that way, once you start back on food your weight loss levels out, just keep following the program and it will start again but will be slower. If you are not using an online food journal I recommend that it counts your calories, protien and so on and gives you a good idea of what is working and not... Good luck, I hope to be on food soon too, I was just banded the 28th. -
look at this site, is it really this bad???
Jachut replied to Fruitcake25's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well, I've had my band for five years almost and I'm still a happy camper. Its never ever given me any trouble and never restricted me so much that I've been miserable and unable to eat in any given situation. I can always tackle something of what's on offer, i lost weight easily, I keep it off easily, I love love love my band. -
if this works I will be the first Pig with wings!
sslouha replied to pigwithwings's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well pig, this is a first.... Congrats on your decision, is this an easy fix NO! Is this doable, most definitely and I know you will be doing this and you will be successful! As far as heads up well surgery will be fairly painless, unless your a whimp, then you need your drugs:tongue2: Now after surgery make sure that you follow the doctors rules to the T, if you get hungry call the doc or nutritionist they can help you greatly. Do not get upset if you gain some weight during this 6 weeks of healing, this is normal and what you should concentrate is on healing. Get your Water in!!!! If you want to exercise, they say walking is fine, but check it out with the doctor. Some don't want you to exercise like weight lifting or any core exercises for 6 weeks or 2 weeks. One thing they agree on is you are not to lift more than 20 lbs. Once you get your first fill then you can start worrying about what it is that is making you gain weight. Well good luck! I am only two months out, but reading the post and going in the chat room has been my saving grace! Take Care Sandee -
Nervous and Excited!! Less than 2 wks for VSG
want2lose posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone, I have been reading many posts. Some good, some bad. In less than 2 weeks I will have VSG in Mexico. I am tired of not being able to do the things I use to. A few years ago I was informed I was hypothyroid. Couldn't figure out why I felt sluggish and couldn't keep up bike riding, playing tennis, and so on. Thanks to the meds I have gained weight and no matter how healthy I eat, or how much I exercise, the weight does not come off that easy. My knee is such a problem at times. I get up and feel like it just wants to pop. I spoke with my doctor and I asked her what she thought about this surgery. Since she said it was not her field, she gave me info that I could attend meetings and learn more. I heard of Dr. Almanza through someone I met on vacation. She had him and filled me in on her experience. I contacted Melissa (Patient Coordinator for Dr. Almanza) and she has been wonderful answering all my emails everytime I email her....which has been alot. I am nervous but excited also. I will post my experience once I have it done. Can't wait to be lighter and able to get back to my old life! -
On the Path to VSG...Hopefully Best Decision
Someday160 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am a life long dieter...read a journal I wrote when I was 8 and even then I was talking to myself about losing weight. I've been a pauing member/meeting attender with WW for numerous years and although I love the program, I still struggle with portion control, emotional eating and general grazing. I see a therapist to help with the emotional aspects...and that has helped. I do WW and that has helped...especially with improving overall healthy food selections. But......highest weight of 273 led me to a WLS Seminar in December 2010. I am lucky to live near a Bariatric Center of Excellence. Went for my first consultation a week later. My insurance covers the VSG and I passed the "exceeds a BMI of 40" test with flying colors. Now I am faithfully following the WW program while I navigate the insurance approval. My therapist wrote my psych evaluation and I attended a WLS Support Group Meeting. I plan to continue to attend those as continue towards surgery. I have even purchased all the stuff for the two week preop diet (got to shrink that liver!). I've lost almost 7 pounds since the seminar. I'm looking forward to having the surgery and moving on. I want to decrease the grehlins, enfirce portion control, continue WW, and WLS support group meetings. I'm hoping this site will be a great source for ongoing support and advice as well. Bring on the VSG! -
I am 61 years old, 5'5" tall and weigh about 250 lbs. I have gradually gained so much weight in the last ten years but it has effected my health. I have sleep apnea, gerd, also a hiatal hernia, and an abdominal hernia for the second time in about 3 years, this one is bigger than the other one. I need that taken care of but because I am overweight I think I probably will get one again. I also take medication for high blood pressure, high colesteral, overactive bladder, depression, and copd. Would I even be qualified to get a lap band with these health problems? Another question is I am on Social Security Disability with medicare and medicaid coverage. Would I be covered for this procedure? Any responses from you are appreciated.

Second meeting down four more to go!
Foxbins replied to donbie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think they were trying to make you feel better. Some of my friends told me, "Oh, you're not that overweight" and "I can see that you are big-boned." What I said was, "Thank you, I know I carry my weight well, but I weigh more than a LSU linebacker and it's not healthy for me to stay at this weight." I think someone should consider weight loss surgery when they have repeatedly tried conventional diets and failed and the risk of remaining obese outweighs the risk of the surgery. -
Hello all, My name is Courtney and I am 27 years old. I am about 100 pounds overweight and ready to make a change. Prior to my current battle, I was a personal trainer. I worked out daily and was in great shape. That was until my hormones went south. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism following a year of gaining weight and battling doctors. Following this, I was diagnosed with PCOS. For the past two years, I have been on every diet and done some extreme exercise programs. All of these attempts have failed, which is why I decided to have Lapband surgery. I went for my initial consultation two days ago. My patient advocate told me that my history, weight, and health issues will definitely qualify me. Not to mention my husband has wonderful insurance. My patient advocate told me to plan on having surgery in 30 days. I am very excited and ready to end this current chapter in my life and move on to the next. I know it will not be easy, but I am up for the challenge. I am glad to be here and share my journey with everyone and hear/read about the journeys of others. Thanks, Courtney

Lurker, First time posting. Had First Adjustment YAY !
READYIN2010 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all. I usually lurk and read a lot of the posts, but today I'm ready to start putting in comments. I got banded on 03/30/2010. I lost 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks (344lbs-334lbs) after being banded then after that my appetite shot up and that lovely feeling of being full and satisfied went down. I maintened my weight loss surprisingly cause I thought for sure I would gain. I know for sure I would have if I did not have the band since I ate a lot. I also walked 1 mile a day too. So I read in the forum this happens to everyone and I felt better, plus my doctor assured me that my stomach went down from the surgery swelling and that soon as I was adjusted I would see a major difference. So I had my first adjustment two days ago on 05/4/2010 and right away I noticed the difference in not being hungry. I have lost 2 lbs in 2 days already. Finally moving ! I get full from a small cup of jello, can you believe it ? Before my adjustment I could have a protein shake and jello. I can only drink half a protein shake now. I'm so excited. My doctor gives adjustments every 4 weeks and I'm glad about that because I have read some people only get every 5 months WOW ! I'm very glad I made this decision for the surgery. The easy part has always been losing the weight, but keeping it off was my biggest trouble. I lose 60 and gain back 65 in a year. Now I no longer have that worry thanks to the lapband. Good luck everyone and I look forward to reading more stories on here. This site is wonderful because I can relate so well. Take care. -
Hi! Future Bander here-would love to talk to everyone, especially college age banders
Lady Lap Band replied to lulu150's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi lulu! My name is Breanne, I am 22yrs old and I am being banded on June 19, 2009. What is your date? I live with my mom, dad, and husband, and they are the only people that know about my surgery. I plan to tell no one else. I started this Journey back in December of 2008. At times it has been so hard not to blurt it out to a few certain people. Especially people who I relate to on weight struggles with whom I always chit chat with about dieting. But I am so thankful when I walk away and have not told them. Every bone in my body says don't tell anyone, they will not get it. So I am trusting my own instincts on this one! Thank the lord for this website, had I not been able to talk about this non stop here I am sure I would have told someone. I am telling you, use this website non stop, when you want to tell someone, come talk here instead! I don't think you'll regret not telling! Keep in touch! -
Excited - but still have 5 months to wait :(
MeMeMEEE posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well I have decided there is no "leaning" toward the sleeve - it is definitely the one I want. My appointment with the surgeon is April 7th but my insurance just changed and now I have to see my primary Doctor for 6 months instead of 3 - a little disappointed, if I had not sat on the fence for a month I would probably be scheduled already But hey, all in good time. I now think it will be August, hopefully earlier in the month and not latter!! I joined weight watchers this week in hopes to start losing some now and as part of my "plan" with my doctor - even if I lose 50 lbs I still have a high enough BMI. I went ahead and scheduled all my monthly visits with my doctor. Honestly, if it weren't for all the scary "your insurance won't pay for complications" I would go to Mexico and have it done tomorrow!!! I am really enjoying reading everyone's posts, this is a great board. I don't know anyone around me who has had the sleeve, pretty new around here I believe. I know a ton who have had RNY and a few with Lap Band and one with DS but that's it so this board has been so helpful!! Thanks everyone! -
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow
****** replied to ******'s topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks, Lisa. I totally get the one day thing -- I think my "fleeting glimpse" lasted 15 minutes (my 15 minutes of "fame" don't ya know). I remember the Liquid Protein (predigested) diet and all the other kooky straws I grasped at. Wish I had all THAT money back! Finally realized that Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, and all the other "professional" weight loss experts are in business to make money. Since they really couldn't accomplish that with pyramid schemes, they need to help people stay fat or they'd go broke. Sadly, the fat chumps in the cheap seats are the only ones going broke.......but enough of that old rant. Can't wait to start b*tchin' about my wrinkly skin, batwings, and saggy lady bumps! Keep up the good work! You're OH SO WORTH IT!!!! -
Wish I could just make a decision on this
grumpys wife posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am a 49 year old female with a BMI of 35, high blood pressure. For years I have been wanting a lapband but neither my insurance nor my husbands would cover it. Since the kids are now out of school my husband said if you really want this then do it. I talked with a surgeon in my city and then went to Houston to see one that my friend had used. I was all ready to get it scheduled and then when he heard that I wanted to lose 50-60 pounds he said, no I'm not going to do it because you will not lose that much weight and you will be wanting a revision in less than 5 years. He wanted me to do the sleeve and I said no and he still wouldn't do the lapband. Now I am a self pay and this is a real good surgeon. So after crying all the way home I started thinking why would he say this to me if its not true. I believe that you can search these forums and find the responses that you want to find, I always mostly read to good about lapband. I have to say that I can't find too much negative about the sleeve. My only problem is that I am so scared of complications since I am a selfpay. I don't want my family to have financial problems because of me. My husband says whatever I want to do he is behind me but added that he really doesn't think I am big enough to have the surgery, just exercise and follow my diet. Oh of course, I hadn't even thought about that. Anyway, I read these forums daily and just can't decide what to do, its not the money, its not having to deal with eating small portions, its just being scared of a leak. I just want to cry every morning when I get dressed cause I look so fat. -

2 Month Post-Op Drs. Appointment went Great!
Diane posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Whoot! Whoot! 2 months Post-Op Drs. appointment today and I am down 34 LBS. since my surgery on Feb. 14th, 2011. Asked my Dr. how he felt I was doing as far as losing weight goes. He said well let me put it this way, if you were a RNY patient I would have expected you to lose 33 LBS. in 3 months and you have lost surpassed that in only 2 months and you are a sleeve patient. I could've (hugged) my Dr. he made my week. Have to see him in a month so hopefully I will have some more off by then, cuz theres no stopping me now! LOLS! "I LOVE MY SLEEVE"! Hope everyone else has a GREAT WEEK also!! -
Boxing/Karate 2nd time asking, please advise
littlefroggy replied to Gman's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I took karate before and LOVED it!! (Pre-surgery, in college, when I was about the same weight... however, after their workouts, I could do 100 sit ups, 100 push ups, 100 leg lifts, etc! I felt SO in shape, even though I was still heavy!!) There is a karate studio within walking distance of my house and I am thinking about going there. You should be able to do karate, but I don't think you want to risk getting punched in the gut while boxing!! In karate they won't really punch you hard! And, if you are in a place that does contact, they will be able to work with you not getting punched in the stomach. I say YES to karate, NO to boxing... but talk to your doctor too!
