Pre-Op and gaining weight
rubyspring replied to CowgirlJane's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This may be much more restrictive than what you are looking for but my pre-op diet has been low carb until I went on all liquids. The targets were 70-80 grams of protein, 15-30 grams of carbs and 20-30 grams of fat. That gives a calorie range of 700 to 900. I couldn't have any bread, pasta, rice, or starchy vegetables and no fruit. You could use this as a starting point and modify by adding fruit (more carbs), small portions of starches (more carbs) but I would be cautious about adding too many. Proteins are much better. I also used on protein shake instead of a meal, usually breakfast. I lost about 15 pounds in the 6 weeks before going to all liquids. Good luck. Your on the right track by switching to whole grains. -
August All Stars Easter Challenge! End, wk 6 (3/29/09)
fleminld replied to heartfire's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
start: 219 now: 210 goal: 209 My weight goes up and down a pound or 2 then drops a couple pounds all of a sudden. I have been going to the gym 5-6 days a week. Its a daily battle to go still, but have to admit it feels good to be able to actually go and be able physically to use the equipment for a good amount of time. -
Ugh, I Cheated Big Last Night... First Time Since The Pre-Op Diet!
Savannah26 replied to Toddy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Toddy, I also had surgery on January 31st. My first fill is scheduled for next week. I don't have any restriction which I hate. We had a family emergency two weeks ago and I had to go out of town for 4 days - eating every meal out. I gained back 4 lbs. that I had lost since surgery. That was very upsetting and I have been beating myself up over it and finally chose to get back on track also. I completely judge myself and am ashamed that I have only lost 3 lbs. since surgery 4 weeks ago - it could have been 7 lbs.!!! Anyway, I rarely ever drink, so can't help you there. I have kept my surgery a complete secret from everyone too, except my daughter and out of state cousin. I took 4 "vacation" days off work - no one has a clue, not even my best friend, not my father, not my brothers. I have always eaten soooooo slow, so the family and friends are used to it. Guess they will be grateful when we all finish eating at the same time and probably won't notice I didn't eat hardly anything - once I start feeling restriction. So, to answer your question (how do you act normal around a bunch of friends, none of whom know you've had WLS??) - I started talking about trying to lose weight a few months ago when I stopped drinking sweet tea, diet coke, and started working on the pre-op plan to lose 20 lbs. So, everyone just thinks I am on a diet. The good/bad thing about lap bands is that the weight loss is gradual, so being on a diet along with the 1-2 lbs. we are supposed to lose each week will make sense to everyone else. I have already started talking about portion control as well, in preparation for outings in which I only eat a small amount. Perhaps you can do the same and also mention you are trying to eat slower so you can feel full faster. I just can't wait for my first fill so I can walk the walk and talk the talk. Good luck and keep in touch - we are lap band buddies! We can help hold each other accountable and support each other since we are in this "secret" together from Day One! -
Went for an unfill today! there scale is different
dramastarr replied to hopetolose's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Girl don't sweat the small stuff, my scale goes from one range to the other. No scale will say the exact same reading all the time. Plus you have to take into account if you have eaten, pooped, drank tons of water. Its a lot of things that can make a scale read a certain way. Don't sweat the scale instead use body measurements and how your clothes are fitting. Remember there will be some weeks when your body won't show the difference in weight on the scale, but it will show up in you loose clothes. I had to tell myself that because I was getting obsessed with the numbers. Then I realized that my body is different than others. I weigh 214 now and can were size 14 in pants while someone else who is 214 may be in an 18. Trust you body on this journey. -
First Band To Sleeve, Lost 98...now Doctor Is Suggesting Revision To Ds...
PEvette replied to PEvette's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Because when I had revision back in 2012 my BMI was 62 now I believe is like 47 or something now, and he thinks because I've been at the same weight for 6 months my body may have lost all it could with the sleeve procedure... He told me to give it my all the next 3 months and if I still cannot break the stall then we may need to explore me revising to DS... I really dont want another procedure, but I've heard good things about the DS....but ultimately the only way I will get it is with insurance approval, I had to pay out of pocket for the revision to sleeve, I honestly cant afford another procedure... So, I am going to give it my all the next couple of months and pray I can break this stall, which is now 8 months and counting -
Hello. Can you guys please post a typical day of eating for you? I am about 7 weeks out. I barely get 55 grams of Protein in. I am stuffed every time I eat. I honestly don't have much room for veggies. I have greenbeans or broccoli....very very very little with my dinner. I can't stand V8 juice. I'm just curious how you get the veggies in and how much you can typically eat at a meal. Thanks!

12 days postop
Daizymoo replied to Trenya07@aol.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear you. I was sleeved three weeks ago yesterday. I have really had to think about stuff my husband and I used to do and how much THAT used to revolve around food!! Scary! I think it is normal to reflect on the part food has played in our lives and how that is going to change.Sometimes it feels depriving but I believe being on a limited diet doesn't help. There is so little I can eat right now that I am pretty much confined to getting all my meals from my kitchen and the list my surgeon gave me is truly weird. I keep wondering if there is a method to his madness...........needless to say, I am sick of the food on it and am really eating purely for nourishment at this point....which is strange, never did that before!! I do believe that all changes when you are free to eat whatever you want and can exercise good sense. Then you will be able to go places and make healthy choices in smaller amounts. Hang in there!! Everyone says it gets better!!! -
Okay, the May 14th date is no longer tenative, it is OFFICIAL!!! I have to be at the hospital at 6am and should be getting the surgery around 8am. Wish me luck, not too much longer to go. I am really excited and nervous at the same time. I also had my Psych eval done today and what is funny is my Psych doc said that I was not crazy and I have his blessing on paper. So, cool huh? Picked up all my meds, so we are good to go in that depatment. Doc gave me 1 pint of Lortab, Heparin for two weeks, and Pheneragan Suppositories. Plus a binder and Magnesium. I have been trying to stack up on what is really needed right now, like the broth and jello. Anyway, all is going as well as can be expected. Will check back in soon. Take care everyone!!!

What will I do now with my anger, sadness, anxiety and fear once the food is gone?
JackRabbitSlim replied to bethk12@gmail.com's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi BayArea12 :-) I think we met at Dr. Jossart's Monday group mtg. in SF last week. I was the girl in the back who had just had surgery 4 days before. I have been in therapy for depression and binge eating for years. I don't have the time to type up a response right now, but I do have a lot to say on the subject, so I am happy to chat if you like. I will be attending Jossarts Novato mtg. this Saturday if you want to catch up after the meeting. Also, I remember you asking about hairloss in group. costco is selling a hair and Nails supplement that has 5,000 mg of Biotin in it. Happy VSG! **all thumbs from my iPhone** -
It's strange how pre-op diets differ so much. I am "very low calorie" for 2 weeks. 2 shakes, 2 ff greek yogurts and 1 small meal per day up until the day of surgery. Maybe they tailor the diet to how much you weigh, or if you have diabetes, or? I just find it interesting.

How long will you be in Egypt for Yasmina? TLBC gives the first fill 6 weeks (almost to the date) of your surgery day. But....I would not recommend (nor I'm sure neither would they) that you get a fill right before you leave....ie. in case something goes wrong and you have no recourse while away (ie. you are too tight). If you aren't in Egypt for a long time, I would suggest waiting and getting your first fill when you return. Unless you have your surgery in early Jan and then your first fill in early Feb....giving you some time to get used to it before you depart.

I started having problems straight away, though not with the band itself. The shoulder pain that some people experience for 2 weeks afterwards plagued me horribly for 9 months. The doctors denied it being anything to do with the surgery . . . but it wasn't there before, it's a symptom and it was there right after . . . I'm no mathematical genius, but I can figure out the probability on that one. The band basically wasn't working. I could eat as much as I could before. We got it tightened and I could still eat a big plate, tightened again, same thing with the occasional PB. We went for another tighten and when I had a sip of Water I vomited it back up, so he loosened it slightly. Now, there weren't as many clinics around when I had this, the nearest one being 4-5 hours away and me being . . . 16 by that time. I couldn't eat. Or at least, it was rare. What was common however is for me to vomit at least 16 times during a meal. Then I started vomiting at night, while I was asleep. Last night, for example, I ate a few hours before going to bed, and in me pre-bedtime ritual I actually forced myself to vomit up some food that I could feel stuck, to hopefully avoid it later on. No such luck. I woke up at 6 this morning, choking and swallowing my own foul tasting vomit. I go to the bathroom and vomit up black liquid. I don't know why it's always black, but it is. Time and stomach acid have made it taste . . . like I just dissolved some painkillers . . . it tastes chemical and rancid. There is a plus side, I was 109 kg (239 lbs) and am now 69 KG (151 Lbs). I've still got more to go. I now live in Sydney and am going to my fill doctor on the earliest appointment, which is the 3rd of October. I hope that I can find a happy medium or being full, but not vomiting all the time. I've been banded for 4 years, since I was 15.

So, I started my pre-op diet on the 22nd. We left for a week long vacation the 23rd and got back this morning. I lost 6lbs! I didn't stick exactly to my diet though I didn't over do it or eat anything terrible. My scope is Tuesday and I'm freaking out that I messed up. Help?

Tomorrow morning is my 1st appt with the surgeon!!!
jvance74 replied to Angie19805's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I went to a seminar about December 12th, had my consultation a week later and then had my surgery on January 4th. I was a self pay so it is a much faster process. I need to loose 80lbs and I have lost 20 so far. I had my surgery on Friday and went back to work on Monday even though I was still tired. You start feeling really good around the 4th-5th day. They want you to talk to a physchiatrist to make sure you are really ready for this surgery, since it is a life changing surgery. You have to put alot of work into this surgery to make it a sucess. It is not easy believe me! Well good luck with your journey! -
Stomach stretched a little at 8 mpnths
mariamitani posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have noticed the last 2 weeks I can eat more food without getting uncomfortable. does the sleeve stretch out down the road? I'm 8 months post op. I feel restriction but at about 1.5 oz more than the usual.??? Any advice or thoughts from people who are farther along than me would be appreciated. I'm freaking out a little (I dont wanna get fat again ever!). thanks -
I was sleeved on 2-18 the day after my birthday. One week before surgery I weighed 306. Today one week after 289. I can't believe I've lost 17 pounds in two weeks. I absolutely feel great no problems at all. Oh yeah I haven't taken the first bp pill since surgery.

Surgery scheduled for 11/5 - fearful!
susis replied to BigD35's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am three and half weeks post op and I also had those "concerns". I wouldn't call them fears, but just concerns. I love to cook. To me that is how I show my love to my family. I also enjoyed my wine, pretty much on a daily basis. (And my coffee)!. But my love for myself and my health was greater than those. I still cook, just can't eat what I have prepared. I have my own little meals. And yes, I have gone off wine and coffee cold turkey. Do I look at my wine rack longingly? Yes.....but I also look at the scale with greater admiration! Dinner and drinks,.....and everything for that matter, will change. It has to....I couldn't keep drinking and eating that way if I wanted to be healthy. Don't worry, once you have the surgery, you just won't have any room for all that food! -

So I am getting ready for work this morning....98 lbs down..
**IP~LB** posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi All So I am getting ready for my work day and I had to run back to my bathroom to get something I forgot. I got a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I did a double take. So I snapped a picture. I was at my moms and she gave me the picture on the left. My jaw dropped. I was 317 or more in that picture. I can't even believe I let someone take that picture of me. I was definitely anti-pictures. I realized that before I had lapband surgery in Dec of 2012 that I had actually lost 40 lbs on my own. Needless to say I am very very pleased that I had this surgery performed. I have been keeping my calories under 1200 a day and been working out 4 plus times a week. 58 more pounds to go to my ultimate goal. I would like to lose 6-8 pounds a month to reach my goal. The more weight I lose and the better I feel in my clothes the more motivated I get to eat cleaner and cleaner. Not just stay under my calories but make every calorie count! Hope everyone is doing well today. I had a couple of NSV's this weekend and am proud of myself and I wanted to share Take care, Reen -

day 3 post op. feel hunger.
amykins replied to kjparker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, you really are not hungry. I promise. Your head is used to having food every x hours. It's just complaining. It doesn't hear your new tummy saying it's full. Just sip, sip, sip. It will catch up, I promise. It may take a week or so, but you truly are not hungry. -
I had the same type results on my preop diet. Truth is, the preop diet isnt healthy real long term. For a few weeks its fine. Its a crash diet of sorts and you would probably lose interest in it and return back to your old habits. Thats just my opinion of course. I almost postponed my surgery but am glad I didn't. Its still your choice and I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you.

Hi all, I'm scheduled for my endoscopy on Monday at 10:15am. I woke up today with a sore throat this morning and little bumps in the back of my mouth. I feel perfectly fine otherwise but now I'm really nervous that they will cancel my procedure. Did this happen to anyone? If so, did they still see you even though you didn't have any other symptoms? This whole process has been overwhelming for me. I found out last week that I need my gallbladder removed because of gallstones. I really can't afford a set back Thanks for listening and sharing your experience if you have one.

Post surgical circulation
James Marusek replied to nh-vsgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
According to the internet, there can be several reasons why you feel numbness or a tingling sensation after surgery. https://www.verywell.com/numbness-and-tingling-after-surgery-3156878 Numbness after any surgical procedure is expected for several weeks to months following. As the nerves to the area are traumatized and will then experience a temporary neuropraxia, a transient loss of nerve conduction. This usually resolves over the next 6-12 weeks, but depending on the procedure performed, sometimes much longer. -
Update on my moms band removal / sleeve
amybaby33 replied to fern's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank God your Mom has her band out! I'm so sorry to hear everything she has gone through, but it sounds like she is on the mend. When my band slipped it caused a total stomach obstruction and put into septic shock..I was also 38 weeks pregnant. VERY SCARY STUFF! I'm just so happy to hear she is better
