    The Sleeve vs Bypass?

I really appreciated everyone’s input on the sleeve vs bypass question I posted. I did follow my surgeons advice and chose the bypass, I feel it was the best option for me!
  2. I'm probably having surgery in August and I'm wondering when it might be possible for me to take a trip to Hawaii to go swimming, snorkeling, and hiking. Would November be too soon? So, that's about 3 months post-op. Due to my work schedule and COVID, I haven't been able to take much time off this year and I'd like to take a vacation after surgery. If swimming, hiking, and snorkeling would be too much, are there other things that would be easier, like just walking around a city? I thought of Hawaii because it's in the US and going abroad might be hard due to COVID, plus it's warm in November. Would a long flight be really challenging? What are some things I'm not considering about how I'll feel 3 months out? I can't get anyone to go with me, so I'll almost certainly be going on my own unless I take a package tour.
  3. Hello everyone! My pace is moving really fast. I had my consult on April 21st, had my EKG, lab work, gallbladder ultrasound, and psych evaluation all done by April 28th, got my letter of medical necessity on Monday the 3rd, and today will have my final appt, the nutrition evaluation. That's a span of exactly two weeks to the day! There's always a chance that the nutritionist requires another course with me, but my insurance doesn't (I have Cigna.) So, realistically, by the end of today, I could have my insurance claim submitted and will know the result within two weeks. Everything's been moving quite fast, and though I've researched WLS for a decade now, I have only been working towards it in earnest for the past two weeks. My psych recommended me for surgery and it really helps that my sister just had bypass on April 7th so I've seen her journey and her eating requirements. For those who have had surgery or are about to, what are some mental preparedness tips to be mindful of? I think it's safe to say that many people with weight issues have an odd relationship to food. Just last night, I felt sad knowing I won't be eating rice the way I do currently (as an entire meal, very typical for my culture.) What should I be ready for? Major surgery + major changes in such a short span is sort of making me nervous! TIA.

    Any April 2021 bypassers?

Had my bypass on the 8th of April only down 13 lb but that still seems like a lot to me I've had little to no pain and doing good. Sent from my SM-G930VL using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gastric Sleeve December 2020

I agree with ShoppGirl, but if you have questions, you can always ask them here as well. My wife and I had surgery in November and are doing great. I am also working on getting into maintenance with my weight currently.

    Psych Meds After Bypass

I had the similar worries because I need a cocktail of daily meds including psych drugs. Over a decade later I'm proof that this can be done successfully immediately post bypass surgery and long term. My surgeon believed bypass was necessary although I sought him out for his experience with the sleeve. Twelve hours post op a nurse sat with me and showed me how to take 21 tablets & capsules, not including supplements. I did then and still do this 7 times daily. Among my meds are a few commonly used psych drugs. Both short and long acting drugs were in the mix from the start. My doctor did not allow me to crush pills because medical conditions unrelated to obesity required meds that could not be crushed or broken. He insisted I learn to continue my regular medications beginning on the day of surgery. None were changed to crushable forms. It took 20 minutes. I went home the day after surgery and swallowed my 3 dozen meds and supplements including psych drugs 7 times a day. Zero complications since 09'. Every single medication worked as it did before surgery. Best wishes for your success! MSW
  8. Hi there! I am 5 days post op gastric bypass. On day 4 post op, I started to experience burping after EVERY SIP of shake and water. Is this just my stomach adapting to its new life? Is this something that is temporary? Thanks!!
  9. I wanted bypass because I have GERD, but the surgeon is worried I won't be able to absorb meds I have to take after surgery for other conditions I have that surgery won't solve, so he and my doctor both recommend sleeve. The surgeon is also not convinced I have GERD, but I'm not sure why. I'm just hoping the GERD is no worse after surgery. (I'm on omeprazole now since having gastritis last year and I don't have any symptoms. I don't care if I have to stay on it).
  10. So just a little history: I am 42, , 5’11 and spent a good 10 years of life competing in women’s bodybuilding and also did trail running and half marathons before injuries, peri menopause, and a car accident caused me to gain a lot of weight over a few years. My surgeon is insisting that my goal weight be 150-155 lbs. I have not weighed this even when I was bodybuilding and completely shredded with a full 6 pack. He even tried to get me to switch from VSG to bypass because he felt it would help me lose more weight. I started out at 339 pre surgery and am down to 308 at 4 weeks post. There is no way that I feel I could ever weigh 150lbs as I would be skin and bones! Has anyone had a higher goal weight being taller or having more muscle mass than an average person? Did your muscle mass help or hinder your progress with weight loss? I have my long term goal weight in my head as 199lbs and I’m being told that I would still be obese at this and it isn’t a good goal for me to have.

Need for tasty foods but am I moving too quickly?

EDITED: I didn't see that you are bypass. I'm sleeve. May be different. Orginal response: You are 2 weeks ahead of me, and in one week I can try "regular" (healthy) food, so I think you're doing ok. But your doc is the real expert.
  12. I had RNY gastric bypass in 2004. I have gained weight back unfortunately and a revision would be to revise the surgery I had in 2004 to help me lose weight again. They go in their resize your pouch...etc. They say revisions are not as drastic with weight loss as the original surgery but I don’t know that for sure. Some people need revisions for medical reasons. I am hoping with mine to have a 2nd and final chance to get it right.

    The Sleeve vs Bypass?

I also struggled with sleeve vs bypass. The best thing you can do for yourself is research the reasons you doctor discussed with you. Then research any other pros and cons from a strictly medical perspective. I suggest you ignore opinions and preferences of other patients until after you've evaluated the objective medical facts. Patients may have strong feelings about certain procedures. I've seen "surgery wars" on many message boards. The surgeon I selected because of his sleeve experience recommended I have a bypass be it roux-en-y or duodenal switch. Like you, I believed the sleeve would be less complicated over time. However, after research I could not deny the reasoning behind this recommendation was sound. With my underlying medical conditions the sleeve would most likely have required a revision within ten years. I only wanted to do this once. Two days before surgery I agreed to a roux-en-y gastric bypass. I should have agreed to the more drastic duodenal switch. Despite knowing the surgeon was on point, I could not bring myself to go there. NO Regrets! I'm glad I studied all angles even though I went middle of the road instead of with what MAY have been best. My decision suits my comfort level. That was in 2009. Today I still struggle with ups and downs but overall I'm maintaining. Back then Gap & Old Navy had nothing for me. Now I float between the vanity sized 0/2/4 made for us amplely proprtioned American women . No revision needed but I will always struggle. Best wishes for every you decide. [emoji106] MSW
  14. I have added some foods this week that filled some cravings - cauliflower pizza, cauliflower chips and finally gave in to my daughters pleas for Korean takeout. It’s the first time I have had take out or spicy food since my bypass 5 weeks ago. I had Daenjang stew which has spicy Korean bean paste and jalapeño broth and tofu. So tasty but I am worried it may be harmful to my stomach- I ate a cup and felt fine. Had another cup later. Still fine. Stomach wise I’m feeling fine with these additions but worry I’m moving too quickly to my favorite (nutritionally acceptable) foods. I worry too that denser foods will slow my weight loss but frankly I’m so tired of the protein shakes and chicken and seafood salads that I’m been having these past 4 weeks.
  15. My story started in 2018 after becoming my father's legal Guardian due to him having a stroke followed by a heart attack. That woke me up, and I began to take my morbid obesity and skeletal issue more seriously. But in reality, I should have said yes the first time. My VA doctor suggested Gastric Bypass Surgery in 2013 while discussing my morbid obesity, skeletal issue, and being borderline diabetic. Now let's jump to September 2020 While visiting my PC VA doctor, I decided to get enrolled in the Bariatric program. 26Apr2021, I finished my last phase 1 checklist step, and on 29Apr2021, I received My Bariatric Bypass Surgery Date of 14 June 2021. During this time, my starting weight was 306lbs; to date, my weight is 289lbs. What did I do? Drank more water half bodyweight in OZ Cut out All Fast foods for Lunch Cut out all processed foods Cut as many GMO's as possible Cut soda's Switched to a 75/25% Plant-Based Diet (Mosaic Foods Subscription for all Lunches) Substitute more Alkaline foods in my diet Switched to Non-Dairy Milk's (Allergic to Cow Milk) Plant-Based Shakes for Breakfast (Truvani & Garden of Life Raw Organic Fit Protein High Protein for Weight Loss) I did a lot of research on here and other places. Thank all of you for your knowledge and support.
  16. About the same to me. Minimal pain, minimal nausea. I am now going to revise to Gastric Bypass due to gerd issues. I was wondering what the recovery pain was like between VSG and Revision to RNY.

    Any April 2021 bypassers?

Everything is fine so far! While doing the bypass, they noticed I have a hiatal hernia and so they completed a repair on that as well. Minimal pain following. Just sore and tired for the first week.
  18. I weighed 340 lbs before gestric bypass. I had problems after problems but lost 160 lbs and then had a boss from hell and a shock my husband asked for a divorce after 15 years from my surgery I’m glad I had it. I’m healthier and loving my life again.

    The Sleeve vs Bypass?

If you have had GERD at all I would recommend bypass. I never had GERD before my sleeve but now have to revise to bypass due to it. Sleeve was great for me weight loss wise and I hit my goal but GERD has taken over my life because of how sick I am.
  20. I did that and I found myself eating things I should've been. Just because I was hiding my sleeve procedure from the people I'm close with & ended up gaining weight. Now I had to have a revision from a sleeve to the full gastric bypass. ABeattyWhite

    Michigan Dating Anyone?

Hello! I'm almost 7 years post gastric bypass. Would like to lose about 30 pounds more, but I am happy with my long term results and minimal regain. Dating is not a problem for me, but I'm thinking that it would be a lot easier, if I could find a fellow traveler! Where's the best place to do that? This site's singles section seems a bit difficult to navigate. Thanks in advance, for any guidance. Oh ... and all offers considered. Lol! Andrew
  22. Hi, yes of course happy to help any way l can. I had a bypass 20+ years ago on the NHS, it was the old open type belly button to boobs cut where they left a much bigger pouch for your stomach and only took 12 inches of intestinal track out. Where as today they take out up to 1 metre. My revision was to reduce my stomach further as it has stretched over 20 years and reduce my intestinal track further to reduce the aborbsion of calories. I lost 2 stone one my run up to surgery, and a further 5. 5 after surgery. Put 5lbs on during lockdown but hoping to shed that again now we can leave the house. My parents were both Irish so l was raised on a high carb diet of potatoes and bread, and you couldn't leave food on your plate. 😋🍞🥔 Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything. But know that he is a wonderful surgeon and a lovely man. I travelled on my own, so a little lonely over my 5 days as most bought friends or family. However Dr Kaur would pop in first thing in the morning for my health check & he would pop in on his afternoon break just for a chat & a laugh. 😅 Let me know if you decide to go ahead with it l will be happy to chat to you about anything you think off.
  23. I had a gastric bypass several years ago. I managed to lose 140 pounds but never dealt with emotional eating and grazed my way almost back to where I started. I am wondering if the professionals think it would do any harm to use intermediate fasting (ie 2 meals a day) to get back to the results I once had. Thank you for your input!
  24. I had my gastric bypass 12 years ago and never regretted it. It saved me from lots of health issues.

    Just Starting

I started the process in January, and my surgery is in 3 days—on Monday!! My surgeon required an Endoscopy and 4 pre-op classes before scheduling the surgery. My BMI is 35 and I originally sought the sleeve, but after the consultation and the endoscopy (I have severe GERD), I decided on the bypass. I did not join the forum until this past week, so I was totally clueless what to expect. I was thrown for a loop when I was told I would have to give up Coke Zero forever! LOL! I am glad I had the months to mentally and physically prepare—I stopped drinking carbonated drinks in Feb, I gave up sugar in March, and I gave up slider foods (chips and popcorn) in April. It really helped me for the 2 week pre-op liquid diet—I wasn’t going through caffeine or sugar detox while “hangry!” Good Luck with your consultation—let us know how it goes! ☺️
