  1. Hello! I'm Sarah and just got the insurance approval a couple of weeks ago for surgery. I finished up all my apppoinments on June 5 and then waited and waited and waited for insurance approval. After jumping through some hoops and sending in even MORE paperwork, I FINALLY got approved! This past Wednesday (the 11th) I started my liquid diet and surgery is scheduled for July 25. Boy, am I sick of drinking my meals! I'm nervous, excited and scared.. runing the whole gambit of emotions. I started out this journey at my highest weight ever of 383 pounds. I had been thinking of having some sort of weight loss surger for years, but just wasn't ready yet. After an emotional couple of years, dealing with some depression due to a unexpected job loss and some other things, I decided at the end of 2011 that 2012 would be the year of change for me. It was the year I turned 40, my oldest graduated from high school, will be sending my youngest to kindergarten and my middle son to high school. My husband's father passed away and we're dealing with all that involved (his mother passed away years ago) and what's one more thing? Another deciding factor was watching my husband work off over 100 pounds through sheer determination. I tried, but just was not able to have the success he had which didn't help with the depression. Don't get me wrong, I'm so proud of him, but just a bit jealous. He's been totally supportive of me through-out this process and has watched me struggle and fight and is my biggest fan. I'm so blessed to have him for my husband! That all said, after much research, I have decided that Lap-Band is the procedure that will give me the tool I need to get to a healthy weight! So... Here I am 7 months after that decision. I'm down to 352.1 pounds and my lowest weight in probably 10 years! I need to lose (according to my surgeon) about 3 more pounds to get under the 60 BMI magic number. I have no doubt in my mind that I will be able to do that--especially if I stick to this blasted liquid diet! I'm 4 days into it and finally feeling like I'm hitting my stride. At least I'm not feeling my tummy grumble all the time anymore! Looking for support and others that have "been there, done that" or are at the the same point I'm at to commisserate and share with. I've found a couple of forums that look promising and trying to find out where I can settle in and call "home".

    December Bandsters in January!

Gerbera, sorry to hear about your not-so-fill!! Sounds very painful! :-( although the upside is that when you get the fill done under fluro, you should probably end up w/some good restriction!! (Unlike me!) KAY....I'm struggling right along with you!!! My hunger is back and it feels like my stomach is too! I cant eat any and everything, so It is by sheer willpower I have not eaten the kitchen sink at this point! UGH....I still have 19 more days til my next fill!! OK...so tomorrow I will start a December Bandsters in February Thread! Look for it!

    Banded Yeaterday

Wait, you can eat beans and cornbread already!!?? I'm day 8 post off and I'm still on liquids...I'm starving but can't go to mushys util day 19!!! I can't believe the difference in rules of food with diff docs!!!
  4. I remember how hard the pre-op diet was and I only had to do it for 1 week! It was so much harder dealing with the mental hunger - harder than anything I dealt with post-op. What gave me the ability to lose 10 lbs in 7 days was eating almost no carbs. I drank low-carb Protein shakes and when I just had to have some real food, I only ate pork loin or chicken breast. It's tough to get past those carb cravings, but after 2 or 3 days they go away. If you have to have something sweet, try sugar free Jell-O or sugar free Popsicles. Wishing you the good luck.
  5. the main thing to do is avoid reading posts the closer you get to your date - I did NOT do that and got scared to death - because naturally, you will focus on the bad. The surgery is NOT bad - I had some minor gas pain right after - but was never in any real pain. I'm now about 10 days out and if not for my looser pants, would not know that I had surgery at all!
  6. I am 10 weeks post and a pound per day is above average. 2 to 5 per week is the normal range. Meaning you have done so amazing so far but a slowing down is to be expected. I have had 3 stalls and they are devastating. Follow your plan and things will happen. Exercise is very important. I think the holidays have been hard on everyone because of all the distractions. So glad to be looking at 2015 with a new focus

    Worried

I also had surgery 4 weeks ago and have lost 19 lbs. I noticed the weightloss slow down the 3rd and 4th week. Im guessing its just my body reacting to all the changes. As long as your protien and calories are on point, weight loss should resume. I also started exercising last week to help my metabolism along! Good luck. HW 276 SW 257 GW 165

    Pre Op DIet

I've been keeping to under 1,200 calories. A Protein shake for breakfast, and for lunch and then a light dinner under 500 calories of lean meat or fish and veggies. 2-3 Snacks a day, each under 100 calories. My general day consists of snacks such a a sugar free Jello cup (10 calories) , fat free cottage cheese with sugar free jelly (90 calories) and my favorite, a bag of edamame (90 calories). I found these in the freezer section of Walmart. A box contains 5 or 6 individual steam bags which makes it convenient to take to work. I've found that you can't skimp on the Protein powder that you use. Your run of the mill Protein powder from Walmart tastes terrible and makes it hard to enjoy. BSL Lean Dessert protein powder is AMAZING!! I look forward to my shake every morning, they have flavors such as chocolate coconut candy bar, banana cream pie, vanilla and chocolate fudge. I haven't tried the banana nut bread, and I wasn't much of a fan of the cinnamon roll because I don't like cinnamon. Hope this helps!!

    Smoking...

Hi there, You need to find a way, try nicotine batches or nicotine chewing gum. It's very essential to stop the smocking a couple at least 10 days before your operation. when you smoke, all the cilia in your lungs becomes inactive, therefore leading to accumulation of all the dirt and sputum in your lungs. During the operation, you will receive a medication that will dry up all your secretions in your body (saliva and Sputum), so after the operation will feel like having cement inside of your lungs, you'll be coughing trying to expectorate the sputum. So the easiest way to prevent this is STOP SMOKING. Couple of days after you stop, you're cilia will become functional again, and will start cleaning up the lungs, and you'll be going to your operation more in ease. Try also to secure a couple of days before your operation an incentive spirometer, a respiratory device that you will be using much after you go to your room. Getting it before the operations, will allow your lungs to expand, loose all the secretions you have in the lungs, and spiting it out. Good luck
  10. I was told by my case manager that for people that go the self pay route that any complication from the lap band surgery will not be covered. Is that true. I h ave BCBS of Tennessee. I am being held up now because I did not have a 10% weight loss in the last 5 years. So they say I need to loose that 10%, before I qualify. However, that would put me out of the BMI range, even though I have several comorbidities. The did say that it would not be held against me. I could do it in the pre-op diet. Any thoughts?
  11. At 7 days post op I was told to change from 5 Protein drinks per day to 4 and add 1/2c. mash pot or applesauce and 1/2c. yogurt or pudding. So, I sort of moved into mushies at 1 week. I am only 2 weeks post op (banded 10/12) and am now fully on mushies. I saw my MD yesterday and he said for some people, swelling goes down really fast and they are hungry sooner than others. Don't worry about a thing. Be happy you have the o.k. to move to mushies. I do not think it means your band is not working. I think it means you are healing well. People keep telling me this stage is for healing (not weight loss).

    Weight gain?

Give it some time! I'm just over 3 months post op and I'm down 13 pounds. I just got my second adjustment last Friday so I am now sitting at 4CC and I think I couldn't take any more. I feel pretty restricted right now. I know I lost 12 lbs pretty quick post op, but then managed to fluctuate between a 10 and 8 lb loss...this week I've dipped down 4 pounds since my fill. I'm discovering that this is a very slow process and much of it is psychological for me. I am so used to eating larger portion and eating quickly. This band is reminding me that it's not possible anymore! Good luck!
  13. Hi. I was sleeved Feb.19. In the hospital 2 days no complications. Went back to work in a week. Everythig seems to be going well. I have lost 26lbs. I am a very impatient person and want this to happen like yesturday. I know it takes time though. I have been overweight for most of my adult life. I love this site. Everyone has great advice and when I am feeling like this is going to take forever I read everyones post and I seem to be where I should be. I do get hungry especially at night (I work nights) at around 9pm. I just drink my crystal light and suck it up. Well I guess I am done. Just wanted to introduce myself.
  14. Thanks guys!! I have no intention of giving up and I must admit maybe it's not as bad as I make out. I do follow the rules most of the time. Exercise is a real problem right now because I live outside Vegas and the temp as been in the 100s so it's just too hot!! The walking in the pool is a great idea!! I will use that! But otherwise, I was walking 3 miles 5 days a week and will return to that as soon as the weather cools back off. That will help with my feelings of not doing enough. I have to remind myself that I have lost weight and I am much healthier than I was 10 months ago. I do make better choices and eat smaller portions so it has been a good decision. I just need to learn patience and figure out why I can't stop snacking... There has to be an answer! It must be in my head - I just have to figure it out! Once my husband is better from his surgery next week, we are both going to start eating better. If i get him on board to healthier eating, it may make it much easier for me. Having you all is really helpful!! It's great to know others are going thru the same things, or have in the past and have suggestions on ways to deal with these issues.

    Tomorrow Is Almost Here..

I wish you luck tomorrow, I have my operation on Thursday (1/19) and am in the same boat with you with the excitement.
  16. I was having a lot of pain at 10 days out. Could not take deep breaths and severe pain in upper abdomen. Went to the ER. They ruled out a PE and any leaks. Surgery wise everything looked good but had some fluid in lungs and inflammation of the lining of my lungs. I am definitely walking more and using my IS and pain is somewhat better. I think the fluid in my lungs is better but still very painful to breathe deep and can't lay on side because of pain. I researched a bit and assuming what I have is a bilateral pleural effusion. I am supposed to make an appt for one more week with my surgeon but am concerned the effusion won't get better without intervention. It is still extremely painful. Anybody else have this? I can't find anywhere that this is normal and I am still painful. It has been 3 days since my trip to the ER. Thanks, Sue
  17. Jachut, I admire you and you are a very smart bandster. You told me a while back I was probably too tight and you were soooo right. I mean I checked fitday.com for the past 5 days and the most calories I had was 379 over 5 days, that was the most. I emailed Dr. Curry and he emailed me back that that is why I haven't lost a pound in 2 months. Now, I can't imagine why at that low of calories and exercising why I wasn't losing but I agree with what you told me that it wasn't healthy so I'm making that dreaded 10 hour round trip drive tomorrow for a slight unfill. I have 3cc's now in my 4 cc's band and he ask me how much I thought I wanted out and I said at least .5 cc's what do you think? I appreciate your help and your always soooo helpful to all of us.

Experts - Does it go away? Get easier?

I can't answer that because I was still on liquids at the point you are. I did 10 days of clear liquid and 10 days of full liquids before progressing to mushie food. I do remember when I first moved to mushie food that I could only eat about 3 bites. It took quite awhile to be able to eat more than that. I still had Protein drinks because 3 bites of food did not satisfy me. Eating was more of an experiment at that point. The Protein Drinks really did satisfy me. If I made them in the blender with crushed ice, they were like a milkshake.

Congratulations on your weight loss & maintenance. To lose more, go back to the basics of what you were eating & doing when you first stabilised. Your old protein & fluids goals, watch portion size, keep your carbs, fats & sugars low & track your food. You’ll then need to reduce your calorie intake to lose weight. (Remember, exercise only accounts for about 10% of your weight loss so upping your activity to help your weight loss will only help with the loss of about 2 lbs in your case.) Given that you’ve been stable all this time, the weight you’re at may be your body’s set point - the weight it is happiest at & functions best at. It’s easer to maintain this weight & much harder to lose more & then maintain a lower weight simply because your body doesn’t want to be at a lower weight. To maintain weight lower than your set point will require you to always work at it & to eat fewer calories than you do now to maintain. Will this be sustainable & manageable? Will a lower weight & reduced calorie intake limit or restrict your lifestyle? Just something to consider.
  21. I lost only 2lbs post opt I was so ashamed..but I still could get the surgery....I lost 13lbs in 2 weeks after surgery....my first fill is 11-23-07 but I am feeling hungry is this normal.....I ate some shreaded chicken and I didn't know it had traces of light tomato sauce...now I have been craving since 10/31 I cheated I had a small peace of homemade carmel and I really want your opinion about this....is it normal....did it not get filled during surgery? if so why am I getting hungry?:omg:
  22. I have the same thoughts. I'm being banded on 10/19. I wonder if I'm doing the right thing? Will this work? Can I live with it? Etc. I think if we didn't have doubts we wouldn't really be prepared. We have to remember that it's a tool - albiet a good tool - we still have to diet. Unlike bypass, we will have to work to loose weight. However, when I diet what ruins it for me is succumbing to comfort food - LOTS of comfort foot. With the band in the sweet spot that everyone talks about huge quantities of comfort food will not be possible. That's part of what worries me. But it will work - because I'll make it work.

    Not Enough Calories

i was on 600 calories a day for 10 weeks pre-op and i never went anywhere near starvation mode .. if u arent hungry on 800 or so calories then thats fine too.. everyone is different some count calories as that is how we monitor our food, some just eat smaller portions, some just weight everything .. the most important part of this is 'You just do what works for you ' !.
  24. Thanks for the replies. My manager will let me come back with the 10 lb lifting restriction however not sure how realistic that is. I'm not the type to say no I can't do this or that at work and we are a small unit so someone not pulling their fair share of the workload is a burden.
