  1. My favorite protein shake so far is SF fruit punch (Minute Maid), ice, and unflavored protein powder. It's not thick like the pre-made ones and more refreshing.

Advice needed: How to do Thanksgiving

Thank you everyone for the wonderful advice! Our family is preparing Thanksgiving dinner at our house. My husband and kids all have their favorite dishes or special requests. I usually end up cooking for the first half of the day. As for me....I'm going to focus mainly on proteins, then get very small amounts of anything else that sounds good and I think my stomach can handle. I also recruited my husband for a neighborhood walk this evening. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am truly thankful for this community and its caring people!!
  3. Lifestyle changes are a major part of any long term weight loss & maintenance plan regardless of whether you have surgery or not. To return to eating the same way as you did before is a guarantee of weight regain. How & what you eat in the long term is up to you & how to manage it so it works with your lifestyle. Many are more flexible in their food choices & eat foods which may be considered unhealthy at times. But they don’t do it everyday, watch portion sizes & they accept it will result in a some regain & maintenance at a higher weight. It’s all about balance & sustainability. It’s important to keep to the no fluids 30 mins before & after eating while you’re losing to avoid filling up on them & flushing the food through your tummy more quickly. Plus you’ll be sipping & drinking all through the day so you won’t really feel thirsty at meal times. As time passes you’ll discover the amount of time you need to leave before & after eating. It may just be 5 minutes. And you eventually won’t miss drinking while eating. Just another of the new habits you’ll adopt. Taking vitamins long term isn’t always needed with a sleeve. The only reason you may need to continue to take additional vitamins is because you are lacking in something. I haven’t taken vitamins since 8 months post surgery. My blood work showed & continues to show I’m not lacking in anything & have no need to take supplements. Except, this year we realised my vitamin D levels drop in winter so I take D only then. Nothing to do with the surgery - just me & my sun avoidance ( am very fair). I weigh 2kgs more now than I did at my lowest weight. I put on the weight at the end of last year after a necessary dietary change (don’t absorb protein well since my gall was removed) & a medication change. Don’t like it but accept it for what it is. Sometimes things are beyond your control. I’ve never been able to maintain like this after weight loss. I’d be regaining in a couple of weeks after a diet. I work at it every day. I watch what & how much I eat. Don’t exercise as such but have a series of stretches, sit ups & resistance bands exercises I do almost every day. A lot of this is discovering what you need & what works for you.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

At the end I ditched the slimfast and stuck to premier caramel and chocolate that I will heat up like cocoa, sometimes will mix with the isopure. Isopure also has some fruit clear flavors, I will mix with a little crystal light and the protein and it was good, favorite was tropical punch and mango lime. November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Thank you, i am trying to stay positive. These protein shakes are almost unbearable at this point though. I am so glad i found the unflavored isopure still its hard I have two weeks liquids so everyday seems endless to just get to surgery date.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

I started my preop diet today and I will be going to surgery on November 30 in San Antonio the diet so far it hasn’t been too bad I’m allowed to proteins shakes a day 3 ounces of lean protein meat and a cup of veggies and I am allowed to have two sugar-free Jell-O today
  7. believe it or not, my two-week pre-surgery diet was more restrictive than yours. I was only allowed no-calorie fluids, 4-5 protein shakes, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, and one cup of broth or tomato juice a day.

    Accidently been drinking coffee

According to previous ASMBS guidelines from the ASMBS website, "Q: Do I need to avoid caffeine after bariatric surgery? A: Caffeine fluids have been shown to be as good as any others for keeping you hydrated. Still, it is a good idea to avoid caffeine for at least the first thirty days after surgery while your stomach is extra sensitive. After that point, you can ask your surgeon or dietitian about resuming caffeine. Remember that caffeine often comes paired with sugary, high-calorie drinks, so be sure you’re making wise beverage choices." 2 week pre-op diet help!

The pre-op diet is made so that it shrinks your liver enough for them to safely do the procedure. By cheating, it can cause complications with surgery and also make it harder on you after the surgery. I know this isn't the answer that you want and you're going to see where some people don't even have to do a pre-op diet but trust your surgeon and take a protein shake or something else from your list to Thanksgiving so that you won't be tempted. Temptations are going to be there not just for Thanksgiving but every day after your surgery. Good luck ❤️
  11. Hi MChaney, every program is different and should follow your programs guidelines. Mine was different in which I could have some real protein but that was my program You can ask your team about including some turkey breast and veggies and get their approval. I would also invite you to reflect on your decision, is one day being traded for a better life. I chose this week for surgery knowing well I will skip my fav holiday, but some things are just worth it. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. Hey folks I need advise please! They put me on the two week pre-op diet today and I'll post their guidelines below. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, can I get by with cheating just tmro if I stuck to just about meat and veggies? Will that impact me if I have Thanksgiving dinner? This is also odd, they told me I am to have NOTHING but what's on the list.. that includes meat and eggs... That's protein so I dont understand why I can't have that? Even if it's tuna or something. Can I get some advise please, I'm really frustrated. If need be I'll stay home and not go to Thanksgiving but I don't want to have to do that if I don't have to. 13. During post op, all liquids counted as liquid. So, even my protein shakes were also counted towards my fluids. I made sure everything I drank had protein except plain water. Once I went on to actual foods it got harder but I worked out a plan that worked for me, but it was non stop drinking and eating, at least it felt that way. haha I woke up, drank 8 oz milk (protein and fluids) then a bottle of water, then ate something, then a bottle of water, then ate something, then a protein drink (gatorade zero with protein was my go to) then another water. It is easier now, but at first it was a chore. I am still/always allowed to count my shakes towards my fluids but I don't anymore and still drink at least 80 oz a day and of usually just plain water. I LOVE and have always been a HUGE water drinker so it is easy for me. I can also drink "normal" now. Some people struggle so you just have to find what works for you. You got this!
  14. Thanks, everyone. Made it through Liquid Diet pre-op. On to liquid diet post-op. It is going well. It's surprisingly hard to get the full liquid and protein count in. But glad that I'm on the other end of the WLS.

    Liquid diet

Yes, it is quite normal - some don't do a liquid diet pre-op diet at all, preferring just low carb and/or fat, calorie restrictions, or no dieting at all - we didn't have any restrictions until the usual day before general surgery thing. A big YMMV thing. While I wouldn't go overboard on starting a liquid diet early, transitioning to more protein drinks and the like to get used to them and find your preferences is certainly useful. I don't find the getting used to post op idea all that compelling, as you likely won't feel like having much else other than liquids, but some programs go overboard on the back end with extensive liquid dieting post op, so for them, it might be useful. Our program had liquids in it, but transitioned us as we could tolerate thicker and more solid foods, with their findings that their patients tended to do better as they moved into more real food. But programs vary widely, so go with their instructions.

    Accidently been drinking coffee

Every team is different, your team may not have that rule. The big thing is caffeine slows down the healing process. So most teams just require you stay away from it for a little while, during your healing. Other people do have problems with it, so luckily you don't. My team required 30 days before and after surgery to be caffeine free. I was never a coffee drinker so no issue for me. I sometimes make an iced coffee with a protein drink for a change. I also used decaf coffee, so you could always do that too. So you still get your coffee without all the caffeine.

Thank you! I find that I can tolerate monk fruit, stevia leaf and erythritol (not sure if we can use this) but not acesulfame-k and aspartame.Sucralose is questionable for my body as well. Unfortunately thats the majority of protein shakes. Making my own shakes may have to be my alternative. Sent from my SM-N970U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

I believe they all have some type of artificial sweeteners. You might have to make your own with unflavored protein. Or, if you know exactly which sweetener gives you headaches, you could avoid that particular one. Good luck.
  20. I don't like premier protein shakes and they give me headaches. The artificial sweetners in a lot of low sugar protein shakes give me headaches. Any recommendations for protein shakes? Plant based prefered. Thanks! Sent from my SM-N970U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Unflavored Protein

The dietition at the weight loss center recommended isopure unflavored protein powder. I went and got it right away. When I went into GNC i told the girl that i was looking for unflavored protein powder and that i was in pre-op for gastric sleeve. Before I could tell her what he dietition recommended she said I will show you the one everybody seems to like and she came back with the isopure. I tried it with unsweet tea and it was great to not have the sweetness. I couldn't hardly stomach another sweet protein shake yuck! So I will experimenting with some other liquids. I am on day 8 of 14 pre-op. I cannot wait until next Monday which is surgery day!

    Liquid diet

I am on day 8 of 14 on the liquid diet and yes it sucks!! I got the point that i cannot stomach the sweet protein shakes. I had my seminar today at the weight loss center, they suggested i get Isopure unflavored protein. I ran out and got it right after the seminar, I am going to survive this, whew that was close, just thought of the sweetness made me sick. I had some of the unflavored protein in unsweet tea and it was great!!

    Drinking Water

I have the most success with water through a straw bottle (though I'm careful about not swallowing as I suck) and with open-mouthed cups and mugs for protein shakes. I feel like it helps me pace myself better than trying to drink from the little bottles, and the little cups were too cumbersome for me.
  25. We don't do thanksgiving here but last holiday season I was 6 weeks post op and eating at a relative's house. I hadn't told anyone I had had the surgery so I actually cheated on purpose that day so I could eat more than usual and not draw attention to myself. So I ate the carbs first, veg second, protein little and last, and I kept drinking liquid to get it all through my pouch. I've cheated on purpose a few times since too. It's useful to know the rules (and break them) in certain situations if you don't dump (the risk I took!!!) Also brought home to me how very easy it is to eat around the pouch - even that close to surgery I managed about half a proper dinner. I'll be doing the same this year. However - that isn't what you asked OP! When I'm eating celebration meals at home I do it on a side plate and just have a tiny bit of everything. And I have never felt like I'm missing out. I hope you can too.
