My surgeon did not agree with protein shakes so I never had them. I drank full skim milk instead. There is a lot more protein in it than you would imagine. Make your own shakes with fruit, esp banana, peanut butter, greek yogurt. I could manage PB2 powder. Good luck. -

Have a look at Dr Matthew Weiner’s Pound of Cure website and podcasts. He has excellent information, books (incl the metabolic reset diet) and online nutrition classes you can sign up for. They also have support groups you may find helpful too. Personally, I wouldn’t go back to the pre surgical shake diet. (I’m with you, those shakes are disgusting.) Instead go back to how you were eating once your weight initially stabilised. That calorie load was appropriate for the weight you were so will be a deficit for what you are consuming now therefore weight loss will occur Focus of your protein goals eating protein first then vegetables and finally any complex carbs as you are able. Ensure you’re getting your fluids in. Aim for lowish carbs, low sugar (real, artificial or alternatives), lower fats & add a little fruit. Check your portions, try to eat regularly & watch snacking. Track your intake even from now so you can see where you may need to make adjustments. You can start slowly by focussing on one modifying one or two aspect s at a time then two or so weeks later add another change. -

It looks like you've already got some great suggestions! I had my surgery back at the beginning of August, and have since found that I do have to set the timer to pace myself when eating. I also will play a simple game or do a basic activity while I'm eating for those minimum thirty minutes; a crossword on my computer, or a puzzle on my machine, or pick up and flip through photos on my phone - just something to keep my hand busy when I put the fork down. I know we're supposed to eat mindfully but I think my racing brain really needs some form of stimuli to keep me from automatically eating until my food is gone. I've been guilty more than a few times of putting more on my plate than I should eat, too, so I suggest going back to measuring your food, if you're not doing that, and then eyeballing the amount to split it into sections before you start your timer. A meal is supposed to take at least 20-30 minutes I believe, so I divide what is on my plate into either two or three sections - you could always put most of your protein in one section and then eat that section first over the course of ten minutes in case it ends up filling you up. There are times I can eat more than other times, so I am never really sure how much to get. This post reminds me to be mindful and follow my own advice! OH - the other thing that helped me was moving up to eating at least every three hours. Even if its just a little bit of a protein after three hours, then wait another hour and a half for a meal - by eating a little bit every three hours I'm not as likely to start eating way too quickly due to hunger. I used to eat it a lot but stopped when I got obese (reckon that was a cottage cheese curse?). I eat it now but it has to always be savory. I make cottage cheese bowls with chili oil, cucumbers, roasted cherry tomatoes, black and white sesame seeds and herbs, I dollop that and top it with an over easy egg. I also like it with protein toast. I've never had the sweet version (I see people eating it with fruit, nuts and honey) but I don't think that will appeal to me. I also blend it with avocado, chili, lime, cilantro and salt and it makes a great topping or dipping sauce. If you want ideas on cottage cheese combos follow Toasted Table on Instagram, she's the reason I have consistently eaten cottage cheese since my VSG. -

My sweet tooth is still alive and well..I guess that's why I never had issues with the protein shakes during this journey. Today I am making a bariatric friendly homemade peanut butter cup/cashew butter cup. So good! -
Did you have the same problems during your liquid and pureed phases? If not it might be worth going back a step to purees as summerseeker has suggested. I do understand that chewing food really thoroughly is basically the same thing, but it takes the guesswork and possibilities for errors out of the equation. I know I am weird but I quite enjoyed my pureed food (because it was my first non-protein drink intake for almost a month). So tasty 😍 At 2.5 weeks I was just just onto pureed food, made with a LOT of liquid, and I was eating about 40-60mls (1-2oz) of goo for a meal, depending on how much protein was in it. We are all so different. I have seen people here thrive on solids much earlier. If your surgical team are confident that it isn't a post op complication you might have room to experiment a little. At 2.5 weeks fluids are paramount - there is wiggle room with protein and other macros in most programmes. I hope it all settles really quickly for you - sounds unpleasant.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
- 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk
- 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer)
- 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream)
- 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar
- 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate)
- 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken)
- 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day.
- 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well.
Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

Sorry for any mistakes I make in my entry, but english is not my first language :) I am in need for some advice since I'm getting frustrated. So it's only 2,5 weeks since I had my sleeve-surgery, and the doctors have told me to be patient, but I just want to check in to see if anyone else have experienced this (I'm sure there is!). I am now on regular food, which means I can eat anything, but as adviced I always try to up my protein. After I eat a meal I feel alot of discomfort in my chest, I feel so much air have to come out, I often get the hiccups and I burp alot, I also gulp in my mouth. I make sure I don't drink water 10 minutes before a meal and 20-30 minutes after. But I have been vomitting my food , especially my dinner, alot. That happend yessterday evening, I ate dinner, waited 30 minutes, drank a sip of water. Then felt so neouses I had to make myself throw it all up, and it was hardly any food since my pain in my chest (gas) keeps me from eating. I have not yet felt full from eating, but I always stop because of the pain in my chest. My quesstion is why am I throwing up and when will the pain in my chest go away. Thank you in advance :)

I made cups, like reese; 1/4 maple syrup 1 1/2 cup of a nut butter (I use My Protein) 1 1/2 cup of blended oats Mix the syrup and butter until combined, then stir in the oats until you have a consistent smooth mix. Put into cupcake liners. Then I make the topping; 1 cup chocolate chips (I use dark) 1 tsp coconut oil Melt the chocolate and pour over the cups. Chill in fridge for a couple of hours at least. I got 12 from this recipe. ****** Protein version 1 cup protein powder (vanilla) 1/2 cup nut butter 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup chocolate chips plus another 1/2 cup chocolate chips Pinch of salt (if you want you can leave it out but it helps with the flavour) Mix protein powder, nut butter and maple syrup until it becomes like cookie dough. Then add in the chocolate chips. and salt and mix to have the chips distributed through the dough. Roll into balls and but into cup cake cases/tray and press them down. Then melt the remaining chocolate and spoon over the top. Chill for at least an hour. ****** My luxurious treat; 1/2 cup cocoa powder 1/4 cup protein powder ( I have used a caramel one from My Protein) 1/4 cup peanut butter (My protein) 1/4 cup maple syrup (or honey) Combine and roll into balls. Chill and then see how long they last for Fudge yumminess. **** I also have a satay chicken dish that is delicious and uses the peanut butter.

That's not really an option. It's the NHS so it's just the one appointment through the Bariatric multidisciplinary team. Therapy is really hard to get and the waiting lists are long. Once you get an appointment, you get 12 sessions or about 1 a week for three months. -
can you live entirely off protein the shakes??

I drink them often! I found a Mocha flavored protein powder from PeScience and with 1/2C of unsweetened almond milk, hot water and my collagen. I top with FF whipped cream and cinnamon and bam! I got me a mocha with 30g of protein! I eat Ice Cream every night- I make protein ice cream in my ninja and eat half a pint EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT! I make it with protein powder. In the summer I made an iced profee everyday too. For me it works for me, they are delicious, decent amount of protein and I feel like its a sweet treat! -

I also couldn't eat without something to do. I think a timer is the best option. I've had one meeting with a psychologist after my surgery who told us about mindful eating and taking the time to appreciate the food and eat it slowly and really enjoy it, but purees and soft stage foods aren't much to wrote home about so I struggle with that part -

Not that familiar with the switch surgery but I presume it would be the same for all surgeries in that after the surgery there is a new "standard" to meal sizes. If you went back to eating what would be a normal size meal pre-op you would probably make yourself ill and uncomfortable as you can't fit the food in. I am almost a year and a half out (sleeve) and if I had to have a sandwich I would have half per meal but I am trying to stay away from bread/pasta/rice as much as possible as they take up space in my smaller stomach that should have proteins as the priority. I was in the US recently and was happy to see that Pret did half portions so I just got their one half chicken and avocado to have when on the go. For me I still find that for breakfast a yogurt, for lunch and dinner 150ml/3oz of food with a small snack a while later is sufficient for me main meal wise. I think have protein drink or bar as snacks if needed. When eating out I usually just have a starter and would not always finish. If ordering a main course I usually manage 1/3, or 1/2 if it is a small one, and bring the rest home. -
Everyone is different. I am almost 6 years out. I made it to my goal weight about 1 1/2 years after surgery using the Fast Metabolism Diet for the last 6 months of that. I went back up 15 pounds but my body is happy here. I have never thought about calories. I have always concentrated on how many ounces I eat at a meal. I never go above 3.5oz total. 2oz protein & 1.5oz. I also eat 5 times a day. 3 meals & 2 snacks like cheese or fruit. You have to figure out what works best for you.

Exactly as others have reacted. What is your definition of a normal size? I can eat about a recommended portion size and that took me well into my 3rd year. Sometimes it depends on what I’m eating or if I’m feeling hungry & then I can’t eat the whole portion. Not unusual to have leftovers in my fridge. As an example I can eat about 3ozs of protein plus a cup of vegetables for dinner, 2 golf ball size rissoles/meat balls & cup of vegetables, about 2/3 of 2 scrambled eggs, a tub of yoghurt, 1/2 a large apple, 8 macadamia nuts, 8-10 grapes. If I go out to eat I can eat about 3/4 of a main meal in a fine dining restaurant when meals are pretty much recommended portion sizes. In Australia our servings aren’t as large as some of the American servings though they are getting larger in the casual eating places. For example, I ordered a small salt & pepper calamari meal at a pub & took half home for dinner. This is an Australian site (below) but I’m sure there’ll be US sites about recommended portion sizes to give you an idea. So, there's a normal meal and then there's what you get in a restaurant or what we've been taught to think is a normal meal. At about 8 months out, I can eat a full serving of chicken breast. That's defined as being between 3-4 oz. And in the same sitting, I can also eat a serving of broccoli, which is about 1 cup. I don't tend to eat grains often, but if someone gave me a serving of brown rice, which is 1/2 cup cooked, along with the chicken and the broccoli, I could probably eat about half of that on a good day, but not touch it on a day when I have a smaller appetite. Personally, I would be more likely to substitute a second veg or a fruit. What I've just listed would be considered a "standard" meal by a nutrition expert. It has about 280 calories and 24 g protein, and provides balanced nutrition from several food groups, along with fiber. But most people would probably think it was way too small, and if you went to a restaurant, you would get 4x that much food, plus half a gallon of fat and sugar laden sauce on top. And probably cheese, just for good measure. Could I eat that? No. And hopefully I will never be able to. A sandwich is tricky because of bread. I find bread too filling. I was out this weekend at a sports stadium and had to order my lunch from a food truck. I chose the grilled chicken pita wrap and ate all of the insides but treated the pita like a plate that got thrown away at the end. I do the same with a soup and half sandwich combo from a restaurant, eating the sandwich filling and the soup but ditching the bread. -

Fantastic.. maybe pack some protein snacks next time? I've been missing meals too these days but I'm also not working out .. my period was so painful this time n I had meetings during my gym times but at least my cals are good. Last night I got home late n had pcs of Filet Mignon lol same story different protein. Hopefully we can go back to routine soon -

Well today was crazy but I still managed to stay on track with my nutrition. I just finished eating dinner since I missed lunch and had to eat it late. I wasn’t really hungry so I just ate some chicken breast to get my protein. The good news is that my calories were way lower today so that should help offset the fact that I didn’t do any exercise. -

I hated cottage cheese before and was so grossed out by it. Now I love blending it with eggs to make a high protein omelette. I also add it to a bunch of sauces. Still trying to explore new recipes. -

I've been eating it on it's own since it's good puree - soft food texture so it works both ways. Also added it to a tomato soup to give texture and protein. I used to like it all the time when I was in the US, but since moving over to the UK, I didn't like it because the texture was different. Now, I can keep it down and it's a good protein so I eat it all the time. But, my local supermarket sells it mixed with pineapple, or one with Italian Herbs. I wouldn't eat either of those, but it might be a good suggestion for someone.
