Going for a vsg revision to rny bypass I'm a 30 year old man. was in the greatest shape of my life after vsg. After getting diagnosed with a debilitating back injury i had to give up alot of what i used to do such as body building and 4 Wheeling Ect. So I've put on about 50 pounds in the last couple years since hurting my back. Going to Mexico for gastric bypass revision on February 12th 2019 with ALM. Anyone had any bad expierences with them? Sent from my SM-N960W using BariatricPal mobile app -
How did your medications change post op? Did you have to increase the dosage because of malabsorption? I'm having a sleeve to bypass revision and am concerned about how my depression medication with absorb. Thanks!

Our @Matt Z is, unfortunately, very knowledgeable about this complication. "The Band had become totally encapsulated in scar tissue, it took my surgeon and her team more than 3 times longer to remove the band than what's normal. My 3-4 hour surgery, lasted over 6 hours. Who knows what would have happened if I didn't revise. The band is gone. My insides have been rearranged. And I'm working my way down to my goal. One day at a time. Surgery of this kind is always a bit scary. I had the band since 2010 and revised in 2015. I am pending RNY and working on getting mentally prepared for it. Andrew- so true about the clothing. Made many a run to the second hand stores around my surgeon's office as my size went up and down. Only kept 30 lbs off but I am down 3 sizes solid and 4 is a bit tight these days. With the band wide open, it is expected.

Had the band in 2010 revised 2015 and slipped again. Pending RNY revision and looking for buddies as well.

Need to meet my deductible and I am getting lap band revision to the RNY biomass.

I Had MGB on August 6, 2018. It was a revision from VSG. My surgery weight was almost 260, today almost 5 months later I’m at 240. I feel discouraged, but will keep at it. im having little restriction so im keeping mindful about staying under 1000-1200 calories, getting protein in first. Also drinking 2 liters of water. in a desperation, I’ve begun 16.8 IF... this is not the result I was expecting from a revised surgery, 4 months in. :-/

57 years old. I was a revision so doc was concerned about scar tissue. But, I felt fine the evening of surgery. Could have gone home, but wasn't allowed to. My friend came to visit me in the hospital in morning and the doc said I could go home so we walked to the parking lot and she drove me home. Hub had no time to make it to the hospital. Other than constipation (affects a lot of us), absolutely no complications. No hair loss and I'm 6 months out. 60 pounds down. So happy I decided to do this. Viz

Hey everyone! I had a revision from band to bypass on Tuesday the 29th! Still a bit sore, but super excited. How long does the gurgling stomach last??? lol

My surgery was the day after you. I’m glad I don’t work because my energy levels are still close to zero. Just walking around a shopping centre wipes me out. Not sure if that is from the anaesthesia, the op, the blood transfusions I received or the middle ear infection I currently have! Other than that recovery has been pretty good. No pain. Just trying to figure out what foods I can eat as mushies. I’m tired of yogurt and custard and other sweet foods. Weetbix and oats don’t sit very well. Tuna or smoked salmon with cottage cheese is pretty good but I seriously need new easy ideas that don’t taste like baby food. I have lost just over 4kg since the surgery. I’m happy with that as I’m a revision and don’t have a heap to lose.

When I saw my surgeon last month he completely demoralised me by saying I was slow. I spoke to my psychologist about his comments and she can see how hard I'm trying. I log everything - on 3 different Apps (because I'm a freak about it at the moment!) and I am so strict with everything. My psych thought it was because I'm revision from band to sleeve - and I've had so many diets over the years that I've affected my metabolism. There's a great article on this https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/02/health/biggest-loser-weight-loss.html which I found really interesting. I'm so pleased to hear from others who are struggling with the slowness of the loss. But, I am losing every month - but only about 7lbs or 8lbs. And, I do feel hungry a lot of the time. But, am trying to eat no more than 900cals per day. I was thinking of trying to drop that down to 800cals to see if that made a difference...

Gastric or Sleeve which is better?
S@ssen@ch replied to GIGI67's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Let me preface this by saying that this conversation is better handled between you and your doctor. To answer your question about which is better, that's entirely based on individual situation. There is some evidence to suggest that the sleeve can make pre-existing GERD worse. However, there's also some evidence that this link is negligible. Regardless, you will find some doctors who refuse to sleeve a patient with pre-existing GERD. You will also find sleeved patients who develop GERD being revised to RNY to treat the GERD. I can only speak from my personal experience. I had GERD before I was sleeved. I had it with lap band and off/on after I had the lap band removed. For personal reasons, I did not want to even consider RNY. So, I had a frank discussion with my doctor about the likelihood of GERD after sleeve. He felt that my GERD was "situational", meaning that my lifestyle and state of obesity contributed to it and its exacerbation. He and I were willing to take the chance of post-sleeve GERD and so we proceeded. About 6 weeks after my sleeve surgery, I started having heartburn. We immediately implemented PPI's (Nexium), which took care of the heartburn and I thought I was in the clear. Life was good as long as I took my Nexium. About 6 months after surgery, I started noticing that I'd wake up with sore throat like I'd had a runny nose all night. If I ate too late, I'd be awakened by reflux (not choking or anything, but I could feel the stomach contents moving up towards my throat. Gross, I know, but it's the honest truth). I tried all of the GERD recommendations (no eating after 7, avoid certain foods, sleep with head elevated) and some not so common ones like DGL, sea buckthorn, and something called "Swedish Bitters". Everything helped, but didn't really solve the issue. I'm now seeing a gastroenterologist and we'll see where that takes me. -
Revision Question regd. Motivation
S@ssen@ch replied to JLondon11's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I didn't do direct revision of band to sleeve, I had a few years in between. I admit that I was a little more motivated with the lap band. I was younger, excited for the possibilities. When I got sleeved, I was motivated, but it was more of a "been there/done that" kind of thing. The shine was gone. That doesn't mean that I was unmotivated, only "seasoned". I think I've been more realistic in my expectations this time around. Rather than an all or nothing enthusiasm, I have taken the approach that whatever changes I make to my behavior must be sustainable. I'm also much more patient with the weight loss. I don't get too excited if I am losing slowly. I don't freak out with a brief stall and in fact, don't get too excited if I don't lose weight every week. I weigh myself every week to keep myself in check and only get concerned it it's been a month where I've had no weight loss. Fortunately, it's only happened once and all I did was re-evaluate what I'm doing to lose weight. This time around, I have never doubted that I would succeed. I give myself plenty of time to do that. I have no set timetables of when I want to achieve my goal, only that I eventually get there. I'm just much more relaxed about it this time. -

Insurance Denied Revision - Next Step Peer to Peer
JLondon11 replied to lspringman's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have united healthcare and am revisioning from lapband to sleeve on 2/20 I am wondering if your medical group has a lot of experience with revisions, mine did and told me they knew “all the right things to say” and got approval. Hopefully your group will fight for you with the insurance company and all will work out for you... I know you are probably as anxious as I am to get the lapband out! Best wishes! -
Revision Question regd. Motivation
JLondon11 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Have any revisionists had trouble getting motivation to lose more weight? I am going from lapband to sleeve on 2/20/19 and I feel like even though I have plenty to lose, I’m not feeling like I am going to, or that I am not as motivated to. Maybe it’s a defense mechanism? I am hoping it’s like when a woman has a baby and their “maternal instincts” kick in that I will feel more motivated after surgury to make weight loss a goal rather than just getting my lapband out... any one else struggle with this and if so, did that change after surgery? Thanks ahead of time. -

Insurance Denied Revision - Next Step Peer to Peer
lspringman posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm in a panic right now I had the lap band in 2012 and started having problems, so I started looking into a revision to bypass. I completed all the required steps the insurance requires (dietitian meetings, Psych eval, stress test, EGD). EGD even showed that my band had prolapsed. Everything was pointing to in the direction I needed to get an approval. Fast forward 3 weeks - I get a letter from the insurance that my claim was denied!!! WHAAAT?!?! I called the doctor's office in a panic.....They said the next step is for them to do a peer to peer with them (which is what they do for people that get denied). I do remember that I was told that revisions usually take 2 rounds of approvals. Maybe that's what this means? Anyway - has anybody gone through this as well? I have United Healthcare. Do they typically approve after the peer to peer? I don't understand why I wasn't approved to begin with. I'm eating tums like they're candy at this point! (because of my issues, not because of the stress of not being approved LOL) UGH!!!!- 15 replies

BHi elcee thanks for your reply. I’m 7 months since band. I’ve had this a couple times before but the lump in the throa feeling was gone with in a day. I am getting water through but feel it going past this lump feeling. I’m not sure why I have it. I literally haven’t eaten anything solid since op. I’m living on soup and custard type stuff still. i had been over filled previously a few months ago when I couldn’t get anything including wTer where I did have to go to er and had 3 cc’s taken out at that point and that settled everything at that point. Lots of swelling from throwing up had shut everything up. ive had the pain at the band feeling when stuck I know that one too well but up in the throat at back of mouth has me stumped. ill try your ice idea hopefully it helps 😊 Ps. Is this a problem all the time, I have considered revising to sleeve if I’m having stupid issues with the band.

Barb. So sorry to hear all the pain you have been through! I had a sleeve in April 2015 and while not as severe as yours, I had a lot of problems with reflux and pain and gain afterwards. I had a revision to RNY 13 days ago....and I feel AMAZING. Pain is gone. Reflux gone. It’s truly remarkable how well I feel!! I was apprehensive as well but I am so glad I did it. I feel like I got myself and my life back.

Sleeve or Bypass... help!
BariatricBarb replied to Alexandro's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Im glad I found this thread. Had the sleeve 3+ years ago. Initially lost 80 lbs. Then the pain started. Multiple ER visits before I had my gallbladder removed. Not much help. Constant nausea, pain and heartburn. Ended up back in the hospital from what they called "liver stones". Liver panels back to normal, but still constant pain, nausea, and heartburn. Rx meds prescribed, doubled, and still not much help despite adding Tums and an over the counter antacid to my max dose Protonix. I finally got to the point of wishing I had never had the Sleeve done. I've gained back everything lost. Eat mostly simple carbs and small meals throughout the day. No salad or veggie's for me as they cause pain and vomiting. I think I gave up and some of my old eating habits (sugar) are as bad as before. Just had the pH and motility studies two weeks ago. Gastro called to tell me he is referring me to surgeon. I'm apprehensive about a sleeve to bypass revision. The thought of rearranging things bothers me...quite a bit. Hoping for some wise words, encouragement, or advice. Now I'm anxious and that just makes everything worse. -
I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?
claricey replied to Pam Peltz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m 53 and scheduled for revision sleeve to bypass on 3/11 (pending insurance approval, of course). Peri-menopause/menopause has made this struggle even more “fun”! I’m very optimistic! -

Thanks for the candid reply. I hope to someday join you and so many others in this success. At 56 I’ve spent a lifetime battling my weight. (260 5’5 f. BMI 43. No comorbidity) Now I wonder if decades of GERD will hold me back as I hear it can get much much worse and I’m not a candidate for bypass or revision to bypass. Time will tell. I wish you continued success .
