I weighed myself at the doctor this morning & was so THRILLED!!!! It said I weighed 208 which means I have hit my first goal of 50 lbs!! (My home scale said 211, but I am definately going to take the doctors scale over mine!!!) Yesterday I went shopping & could hardly believe that I could fit into a size 16 pants. I've worn 22/24 for so long! Here's what I've learned so far: 1) You will hit LOTS of plateaus. I stayed at the same weight for 2-3 weeks many, many times & then all of a sudden I'd drop 4 or 5 lbs. Don't get frustrated at the scale. 2) Exercise really does work. I joined a gym only because I knew it was the right thing to do. I hated going & was emberassed to be seen among all the muscle men. I could barely walk on the treadmill for 5 min. without feeling like I was going to pass out. BUT....I made myself go & it's been very, very worth it. I'm now a regular & 2 days ago one of the buff women came up to me & said - "I've been watching you the past few months & you've really inspired me. Keep up the great work." Wow! I inspired HER!! That was a big NSV to me. 3) You really do need to follow the bandster rules. THEY WORK!! I had moments of just wanting to do my own thing. But, whenever I went back to taking small bites, chewing my food A LOT, & not drinking after meals I lost more weight!! 4) Patience is important. It took me a while to get this weight on & it's going to take me a while to get it off. I'm not only losing weight, I'm changing a life time of bad behaviors & that doesn't change overnight. 5) DRINK YOUR WATER!! I have never been a good consistent Water drinker until recently. But, I can tell a difference!! I realized that sometimes when I THOUGHT I was hungry, I was really just thirsty. 6) It's okay to eat junk once in awhile. You can't deprive yourself forever!! Friday evening is my free night & I let myself choose something fattening & sugary to eat. ONLY ONE ITEM. I eat it & it's gone. I've never gained any weight from doing this & I am satisfied. If I am tempted to eat junk during the week, I tell myself - "You can have that on Friday! I don't like to be told NO. If I know it's something I can't have, I want it more. Knowing I can have it on Friday makes it so much easier. Which reminds me, today is Friday!! WAHOO!!!! Thank you to everyone on here for all the great support & good information. I learn a lot from you all & consider you my friends! I can't wait to reach my next goal!!

Goal weight vs happy weight
joatsaint replied to boosh10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't really have to do much exercise wise to lose the 1st 100lbs. The only exercise I've done is walking. I had a lot of foot pain before surgery. I started out walking from the farthest parking spot to my office front door, with the goal to walk 10k steps a day. It was in the 2nd month post-op that I really tried to start walking as exercise. Here's my blog post I keep to track my progress: http://www.bariatricpal.com/blog/9018/entry-31216-nsv-2-you-best-step-off-b-hatch/ -

These are always my *favorite* NSV stories... CONGRATS!! Now get ya some smaller clothes. :biggrinjester: -
lessnless....that's a GREAT NSV. Thanks for sharing. I'm O+ and have NEVER 'yet' been able to donate blood!! Seems like every time I try to I'm either post-op (or back in the day was breastfeeding!) or on meds that prevented it. The one time I DID get close enough to even get pricked my blood FLOATED and they turned me away. (They did give me a tee-shirt anyhow because I was crying I wanted to donate so bad!) I'm thinking about trying again... ...before I get too thin.

Congrats on such a great NSV.

Eating and exercise habits
Pookeyism replied to angry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Questions like this are red lights to whether or not you should have the surgery at this time - not ever, but you need to be really aware of what is going on. I see posts like this often (I have been here since November of 2011) and I know you are going to get responses – may have already got them in the time it takes me to type this – that it varies, maybe, if you exercise enough. Honestly, truthfully, if you are over 100 lbs overweight and hope to reach within 10% of your goal and stay there, the answer is that you cannot get away with the unhealthy foods, you cannot regress to the breads and fats and drippy gooey things that got you here in the first place. This surgery was NEVER about you losing weight, and somehow like it was an old war wound you forget about it in time, you maybe kinda get a limp that you compensate for but it is nearly automatic x amount of years or months out. It doesn’t work that way. You are putting your body through profound biological and physical changes and you were probably really heavy for a long time, possibly very ill, too. You are losing weight but you are really tampering with your metabolism. We (I shift from second p. to first p. singular because this includes us all) – we will not succeed unless we learn that this is not a cure-all, not by far, it is a really long road. We deal with our bodies, our heads, our memories, other people, and when we are taking a respite from that we deal with the current, back to the day to day, and then, we still have the future. It’s scary, and makes us hesitate, and sometimes really overwhelms. THEN we notice changes, less meds, less pain, more activity, clearer minds, deeper breaths, we have added years to our lives, playtime with pets and kids and family and even new friends. Maybe our pants fall down to our ankles, maybe we run up a flight of stairs AND down the hall before we realize we are not out of breath. The NSV’s everyone mentions here – let those be your guide to whether or not the cheese’s and fats and breads really matter. If they are still in your thoughts, think this through some more – get with your therapist and explore some more discussion and evaluation BEFORE surgery. Note I did not say don’t do it. Just be prepared that you literally are going to get what you put in. -
Yesterday I had to go shopping for pants that didn't fall off! 3 1/2 months ago I was wearing very snug size 22/24. Since , in the past, my weight would fluctuate as a result of yo-to dieting, I had clothes in many sizes. The smallest was size 16. I went to a plus-sized store to buy a smaller pair of pants. Much to my surprise the 14s were too big. I must admit that, despite the fact that I was delighted that I was in a smaller size, I panicked a little. I hadn't shopped for "regular" sized clothing in a long time. I also harbored a suspicion that a size 14 (or any size) in a plus sized store was actually larger than the same size in a regular store. Not sure why I thought that but I did. Much to my surprise and delight, I found that I fit into a size 12!!! Wow! I couldn't believe it! When I looked in the mirror I was able to see ( or maybe recognize) that I actually did look considerably different than I did before surgery. Other people had been telling me so, I just didn't really see it. I've been slowly clearing clothes out of my closet, but still hanging on to some favorite things that are too big. I guess that subconsciously I thought that I might need them again. That little shopping trip has put a new perspective on what I'm hanging on to, so tomorrow I'm going to get rid of those items to make way for my future wardrobe! Nsv - Participating In Life
MinaT replied to Spirit Fire's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What an awesome experience and thank you so much for sharing it with us. The closer I get to surgery the more I need reassuring and comforting stories to keep my mind balanced. I understand all the risks, I understand there are complications, I understand that it's not easy and I may be one that has complications, I am so aware of them and am going into this with wide eyes, but hearing positive and uplifting stories that some day things will be better, makes me so happy. I hope you have a great NSV every day!!! -
OVER 200lbs lost never to be found
rabrijumo replied to rabrijumo's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Thanks all! I am glad I could inspire anyone. One tip I would say to everyone but especially those who have a lot to lose like I did- focus on the life style changes, making improvements to the non wt loss number issues! I could easily revert back to the bad habits of eating to comfort, over eating food and sweets especially if my wt loss stalls. Wt loss WILL STALL, it's the nature of the beast. So the nsv or non scale victories and changing life long habits are a much more emotionally satisfying focus and keeps you moving forward then scale obsession. Good luck all! -
Sooo....since we still have 6 days of fabulous pre op diets to survive, I'd like to focus on some of the NSVs that we're looking forward to. I know we all have several we could list, so let's share what you're excited about. Me? I can't wait to wear a pair of jeans (or anything for that matter) without my "front a**" hanging out! (I have a lot of extra skin from my pregnancies/ c-sections, and that coupled with carrying around extra fat...gives me a big pooch in front...like an a** in front. HATE it!!!) I wanna feel good and look good in my clothes! What's yours??

Last year my husband had a proceedure done and was not able to get around. Couldn't drive etc. Well I don't drive so my mode of transportation was walking. Last Summer I was 240lbs and could barely make it to the grocery store and back without feeling utterly exhausted to the point of almost wanting to collaps. Today I walked 2 miles and was fine afterwards. Its amazing the difference 64lbs makes! Oh and to reward myself, stopped at Off Broadway Shoes and got two pairs on sale for a total of 40 bucks LOL. I love my sleeve!

Ok, so it probably didn't. But I've had abnormal PAPs for the last 7 years. I get checked twice/year and it ranges from From atypical to high grade. I've had 4 LEEPS, 5 biopsies and a conization. I can't believe I even have a cervix left after all the bits and pieces that have been removed. Two years ago I finally said fuckit....unless it comes back high grade again or precancerous, I'm not having anymore procedures...obviously the aren't working. Well I just got my most resent PAP result and it was normal! My OB/Gyn emailed me herself she was so excited. I'm chalking it up to outstanding nutrition over the last 10 months since surgery. Very nice NSV!

OK gotta' chime in here. I'm a Woman's Health NP and spent most of my career caring for women, doing cervical cancer screening and prevention. Not bragging, just letting you all know I have the creds to address this. You are absolutely correct in saying your year of healthy eating has "cured" your dysplasia. Well, not exactly, but what has happened is your body is now able to devote some energy to fighting the virus that caused your dysplsia - the HPV virus. Chances are we've all had at least 1 of the more than 100 strains of HPV out there. Some of us got lucky and got one of the less aggressive ones. Some got one of the more virulent strains that cause high grade dysplasia and cervical cancer. Like all viruses, we need our immune system to be healthy in order to fight off the negative effects of a virus. (Ever get a simple cold but because of stress, it knocked you on your ass?) Stress comes in many different forms, and being obese is a HUGE stressor on which your body has to expend a lot of its resources fighting. Congrats to you for taking this step towards good health. A pretty major NSV, wouldn't you say? By the way, if you have kids, get them vaccinated against HPV. Girls AND boys ( it takes two to tango!)

8 months post, 3 months of stall and poor circulation
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Anomalia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok I'm the QUEEN of stalls lol So here's what I can say. Take from it what you will. Cold hands and feet: I have that, and for me, it's due to weight loss AND low iron. I'm anemic, so I take a bariatric vitamin w/ iron and an additional iron supplement w/ vit c and it keeps my iron levels at the lowest part of normal. When it dips down, my hands and feet are like literal ice cubes. Breaking a long stall: So I tend to gain 3-5 pounds when a stall hits and then lose the same 1-3 pounds over and over until it breaks (and I lose like 6 or 7 pounds all at once). My stalls can last anywhere from several weeks to 3 months. It SUX. When I have a stall, I change up my work out routine to confuse my body. If you do the same things in the same order every day, your body gets used to it and gets complacent and the work out becomes less affective. So I add new things, take things out, add or take away reps, etc. I pay extra close attention to what I eat and when. On work out days, my fluids, protein, calories, and carbs MUST be higher because if not, my body thinks it's starving and holds on to everything. I prioritize fluids, protein, and low carb above all else, but I still make sure that I'm at a calorie deficit while getting in enough to prevent my body from thinking its starving. I also only weigh myself once per week and pay special attention to NSVs, because even when the scale isn't doing what you want, your body still is. Fat gets redistributed, you slim down, that's when you see you drop sizes in clothes, rings, etc... When I work out, I keep my calories at around 1300 - 1400 depending on what work outs I do. I drink an electrolyte drink (Propel or gatorade zero) and an additional 64oz of fluids at LEAST. I keep my protein at 80-90g, my carbs at 40-50g, and healthy fats at 40-50g. When I'm not working out, I keep my calories at around 1000 - 1150, my fluids at around 64oz, my protein between 60-70g, my carbs between 20-30g, and my healthy fats between 20-30g. We need less when we aren't working out. We need more when we are. Just keep at a deficit while still providing more when working out. And make sure you change up the work outs. Right now, your body is really confused. You have to be patient with it, but at the same time, show it who's boss and shake things up to get it going again. You still have time to get where you want to be. Make sure you're not grazing through the day, be mindful what you're eating, when, and how often. Go back to your bariatric diet basics if you need to. You got this. -

What are you most excited for after WLS?
kplumlee1205 replied to Kestrael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I can't wait for the NSV's. I want to be comfortable enough to go to the gym pool and swim again, or even join a masters swim club! I want to go sky diving! I want to be able to clean house, play with my daughter and teach all day without being exhausted all the time or having to take breaks constantly. I'd like to buy clothes that are cute and make me feel like me and not someone else. To be able to look in the mirror and smile because I can see me and not the lbs of shame. thank you for this post! It is so uplifting and fun to see everyones aspirations. -

Heh, heh, heh...somehow I knew nobody'd go for that! :eyebrows: :) :biggrin1: :) :eyebrows: I was really just kidding, but I like your idea of making an thrid row to keep track for myself of how many extra sessions I can get in. A visual reminder of my efforts would be nice, since I've got no NSVs to speak of and the scale hasn't moved in a week now! :straight I really want to do the Water & exercise right -in additon to the food- to get things going again!! -
This morning I went to Have my license renewed, it was pretty awesome! They lady who helped me and took my pic just kept going on and on about how my new pic was sooo pretty and whatnot and how I looked like a different person. I flew for the first time since wls and fit in the seats with no problem! The seatbelt had a lot of extra belt, after I tightened it, whereas before I had to extend it to the end. Way better experience than the last time I flew.

How things have changed in a year
Debbie3sons replied to readysetg070113's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Isn't it a great feeling , it sure is a good day for us I love the change in our minds , body and our nsv's fro where to now and where we are going and the things we can do , that we could not even do before whether it be small or big , yes I say big lol , I a loving being able to just have energy and not say no when some one says let's go here or there , fro being tired all the time or not being able to just breath, yes I know most of us were out of breath , just trying to move sometimes now we do all that we can do and just try to do a bit more than before , so we will keep on going, and won't worry when o last breath might be, cause we chose to better our selves, by being healthy and making choices on eating and drinking healthy.
