Has anyone ever discussed THIS with their DR
JulieNYC replied to miladyelfn's topic in Fitness & Exercise
My nutritionist explained it this way. Our bodies need a certain amount of Protein and Vitamins and minerals every day to stay healthy and keep our muscle mass. This can be done on 800-1000 calories with nearly PERFECT food choices. Fat people have excess energy stored (as fat). So as long as we've covered what we need to stay healthy and keep our muscle mass (the 800-1000 calories of healthy food to get in the new vitamins, minerals, protein we need), no matter how much you exercise, you don't "need" extra food because you have stored energy for your body to burn. That said, if you do very long workouts (high cardio workouts over 90 minutes -- i.e. distance biking, running, etc.), your body uses all the glycogen (readily available energy in the blood) it has and you can feel weak until your body has a chance to convert fat in storage into glycogen. Hence why endurance athletes, even ones with excess fat, sometimes need to eat/drink calories while exercising or just after exercising. When I'm in heavy marathon training (weeks where I'm running more than 30 miles per week), I probably eat 400 calories more per day than other times. I wake up hungry at 2 a.m., something that was never a problem for me, even when dieting, before I was an endurance athlete. I guess what it comes down to is, I don't believe you need excess calories overall TO BE HEALTHY in terms of your vitamins, minerals, and protein just because you're an endurance athlete, if you're still trying to lose weight, except possibly WHILE you're exercising. That's not to say that you won't be hungrier -- you might be -- and if you are and if it works for you to eat a little more, that's ok too. But you don't "need" it, if that makes sense. -

I am weight training. I got a new book about lifting for women called "the new rules of lifting for women" and have begun using that as my starting off point in my workouts. Prior to that I was doing 2 small group weight training classes, 3 times a week. I have changed gyms and so am on my own right now, but I am thinking of setting up an appointment at least once a month with a personal trainer. Just to make sure that my training is covering all that it needs to and to keep me accountable. -
For those of you that became pregnant just a few months post op
mo12 replied to Banana14's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Hi, I had my sleeve done Jan 30, 2014 and now I am pregnant. I was 20 pounds away from my goal weight before I found out I was pregnant . I was gaining weight at first but now I have been losing weight. It wasn't planned but I am very excited. I wish I could say everything is going ok but I can't. I am 3 months pregnant. At the very beginning I had severe nausea and when I eat I just feel disgusted. I have been very bloated with no energy at all. Now the nausea did eventually went to regular nausea but I still have the feeling bad when I eat and bloating. I now have a new symptom of short of breathe but it has been getting worse. I just hope all symptoms go away after this first trimester. Has anyone else pregnant and have issues? -
Hi I took a 10 day course after an asthma attack. I knew it was going to have an impact. I just decided I had to roll with it. Let it do its job to get you well then focus on removing any weight gain. You know it will come off. It may just slow you down a week or so. Good luck!

I have chronic asthma and lupus, along with a list of other disorders. Since my surgery on December 15, 2014, my lupus flare ups have become more frequent and my breathing has been bothering me which makes me use my oxygen more. Well, almost two weeks ago, my doctor put me on a prednisone sliding scale. The first three days of the five day treatment went great, then the next day all my symptom returned full force. So going back to the doctor this past Friday, he doubled my dosage and extended my treatment for 10 more days. I have already gained 2 lbs on the five day treatment and I'm scared as hell about what will happen on this 10 day treatment. Has anyone taken prednisone after having surgery and did you gain any weight and how did you lose it?

That would be great!! You'll be getting your surgery next week! I'm so happy for you! I have about the same amount of weight to lose. How tall are you? I'm just over 5'8" and I started this journey when I weighed about 272. I'm down to about 256 now, and I'd like to get down to a size 12. That may be at 150 or 160. Even though I'm 51, I still 'think' like a younger person, and I have a lot of active goals. I think those goals will help me during weight loss. Do you have goals, and if so, what are they? You're very young, so you've got a lot of time left to do fun stuff. I think you're making a very good decision! Well, thanks and take care. Talk to you soon!

I do not miss fast food so much but I do miss the convenience of ordering a pizza on nights that I don't want to cook. I miss Subway... I don't want the wraps--when I go in there and smell the bread that is what I want and so I just don't go. That bread, even whole wheat would just take too much work. In general I miss bread and especially Pasta from time to time but being insulin resistant, it is best that I avoid these things while trying to lose weight. But none of these things have been a huge issue, I see a fast food commercial or drive by a place and think "that would be good about right now" then I remind myself that it isn't worth it and I move on. Since banding I do get intense cravings for fish which is new for me and a good change from my prior habits.

B52 So glad to read this..... I too had soooo much additional weight that I couldn't even consider jogging. I started off on the bike seven months ago (bc I didn't have to carry my own weight). Eventually moved on to elliptical ...now I'm up to 60 minutes , 6.2-6.3 miles, 6 days/week . But I really want to start jogging...... You can't elliptical a 5K or a 10K...... And I want to experience these things. I think I'm going to have to try starting at our neighborhood walking/running/biking path because I LOOK LIKE A DUCK trying this on the treadmill. Anyway, that's my new fitness goal..... TO RUN!!!!

Don't let the candy grab you. Too much sugar has a bad reaction on the system, ask me how I know. Yes, I've indulged in the Halloween candy I bought a month ago and had to stash under the stairs closet so as to keep it out of my mind. Eating too much sugar has an unfortunate side-effect on me: I get the sugar rush X 7 and it's not pleasant. I think it also spills into the intestines too quickly and just makes you feel like crap and all you can do is lay there and moan (and not in a good way ) so best to avoid altogether. Other than this good suggestion, enjoy the holiday! Next up: Thanksgiving, another foodie holiday. I don't care that much about food anymore, so I don't feel challenged by big food holidays. Sometimes wish I could enjoy it the way I used to, BUT that's how I got fat so it's a good thing that I'm not loving it the same way. I used to buy the pumpkin and cherry pies for Thanksgiving, and then keep buying the pies way after the actual holiday was over. Yep, I'd keep eating pie through Christmas, and then add holiday cookies and you name it. Instant 10-12 pounds from the holidays. After I'd eventually quit (when the stores stopped selling so many holiday sweets) unfortunately the weight was glued to me and didn't want to leave. That's basically how I got out of control and had to resort to desperate measures to get all the holidays off my body. Now I'm weighing in at 118.6 pounds and I'm 5'-7.5" tall so that's a skinny bitch here.

Hi, I can't believe its been 18 months for us. I am not at restriction and really trying hard to not overeat, continue to eat slow, chew well and the hardest thing has been having to wait to drink after meals. But its all worth it. I had been going to the gym 5 times a week but have really slowed down exercising because of work and home commitments; however, being ever so careful and thinking about what I put in my mouth has helped me to continue to lose weight ever so slowly but that's o.k. too. Good luck to all of us out there!

Dee, I really appreciate the post on avoiding sugar cravings. I'm 5 months post op and my weight loss is slowing. I attribute it to a lack of discipline and varying too much from 'the script' so to speak. Sometimes all we need is a reminder and a few helpful hints, I.e., love the bit about apples(: I realize plateaus are inevitable and I seem to go from plateau to plateau, a bit frustrating, but I want to get back on track. Thanks again for the post!

I have type 2 diabetes and am looking forward to getting off some of my diabetes medication and seeing my numbers stabilize. Yes, it will be great to weight much less but to be healthier is my main goal. :frown: My diabetes doctor has not been very encouraging because he says he has not heard all the good news about the changes to diabetes after banding. He has been pushing me toward bypass surgery, but he said that at least I am taking a good step by doing the band. I have been approved by my insurance and have done all my pre-op test. I now have to have another consultation with the surgeon, because I cancelled the surgery on June 12, but I am really ready now. Anne from Pasadena, ca -

Everyone has different skin, some more elastic than others. I would wait until the weight loss progresses and see. Most people will have some extra skin, but it sure beats too much fat! -

At the very start and feeling VERY depressed, bad about myself etc
Defying Gravity replied to Wires's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am sorry to hear you feel this way. Believe me, I understand. I gained all of my weight about 8 months after I got together with my boyfriend and developed agorophobia and social anxiety. We've been together for 9 years as of this coming Valentine's Day, and for a year I wouldn't go anywhere with him, and if I did, I was a mess. I was also paranoid about him leaving me. So I can relate to your feelings and I can also say that you can get through this and thrive. Please realize that you're doing the right things already. Please, speak to a psyachiatrist AND a psychologist if you can, for right now. The psychiatrist can only prescribe meds. The psychologist will help you to deal with the emotional issues, and how you treat yourself. Remember that the surgery can lead to major depression also, but it sounds like this may be beyond that, and they can help you. It's best to get ones that work together as a team. Your husband sounds really supportive. Being open with him about your fears is good, but also telling him how he can help you will help HIM. Men like to fix things and get frustrated when they don't know how. Even if it's just a matter of, "I'll be ok, I just need to work through this on my own" will help your relationship. But updating him on your progress with therapy or meds will make a big difference too so that he doesn't feel like you're pushing him away. You are doing the right thing with your surgery and weight loss goals - you've taken the first steps! You'll get through this. Also, I honestly was only trying to relate to you, I did not mean to make this post about me at all. I hope that it didn't come off that way. If you want to talk, PM me any time. I log in once a day. My thoughts are with you and I send you all the positive energy that I can. -

Congradulations my wife and I were banded on the same day. Many of the staff though it was so cute and helpful to have a built in support system. We are doing fine and have had one fill. Weight Loss - Diet Ticker -
Why? Did you have lipo-suction and expect to return to work 75 lbs lighter? All you did was have the band inserted, surgically....I doubt it is "Turned On" yet......took me 4-6 months to get it runnng efficiently....THEN the weight started to melt away, along with exercising, plenty of Water, and Protein....and very little eating! BTW, 2 years, been at goal for a year, and NO ONE knows I had the surgery, except for the closest family members.....

is it the surgeons choice where to put the band, or can you request it to be next to the belly button? or even lower?? can it be seen once you lose the weight and in swimsuits again??

VSG ... You have 1/2 of the weight I have and my surgeon recommended sleeve. I would not want to deal with malabsorption with RNY. Sent from my KFFOWI using the BariatricPal App

I guess it's up to the individual. I've lost almost 40 pounds since 9/27/07. Once you stabilize your weight loss, then yes, you should continually lose 1-2 pounds per week, to lose in a healthy way. If you were constantly monitored though, I imagine the doctor could get more aggressive.

Hi I was banded in August 2016. I am still really pleased I had the procedure but motivation waxes and wanes as does the progress of my weight loss. I was hoping to have a semi-regular face to face meet up with some other people who have been banded. I'm trying to keep my band and behaviour at the forefront of my mind. I don't mind what we do for the meet up. coffee? A walk? Even a dinner? I live in Rowville but am happy to travel at least a few suburbs over. Please anyone who is even a little interested, contact me. Sent from my SM-G930F using the BariatricPal App

I love me some smartones white cheddar popcorn. My starting weight was 210lbs now I'm 174lbs I think I'm moving too slow.

Well only 5 more days till the day. I am so excited & scared both at the same time. I don't think I was nearly half as excited as I was for my wedding day. I of course am not into being the center of attention. I am the caregiver and don't have much time to care for myself, that is why this surgery is so important to me. IT IS ABOUT TIME I START CARRING FOR MYSELF!!!! :frown: At my preop appt on June 18th I weighed in at 236 with a BMI of 44.1. My highest weight after nursing my son was 243 on May 31, 2008. My husband has been supportive throught the preop process by going to appts with me and asking questions that he was concerned about. I have chosen to tell some people and haven't really decided on others, but you know how people talk, so I am sure that I won't have to tell many more people because the will have heard it from "the grapevine". This weekend will prove to be a busy weekend. There is the birthday part on Saturday for my lil cuzin that is turning 1. Then Sunday another big day "my future niece's baby shower, can't wait to see you RaeLee!). Not to mention Sunday may last day of eating... At least preop. I start a clear liquid diet Monday-Wednesday and can't drink anything after midnigh on Wednesday.... I hear this can be one of the hardest parts, I am excited to start the process. My husband won't be able to go with me when I get my surgery. Which in the long run might be better as he tends to get anxious very easily and if there were to be any complications it may be harder on myself. 5 more days and counting!!!!
