Met with the surgeon for the final time prior to surgery on Dec 5th. I start liquid diet 10 days prior. SO I will be enjoying a small slice of pecan pie in Thursday. The liquid side consists of a combination of Soups (tomato & cream of types) thinned. broth , Protein Shakes, assorted sugar free jellos (like the green), popsicles, pudding and yogurts and such. The only admonishment is Clear Liquids the day before surgery. It will be the same diet after surgery until advised to proceed to the next step. Obviously this is my teams directions, Your team will probably have their own requirements. Best bet is to follow them. After all, that's why we're paying them the big bucks. Well wishes and prayers to all.

I'm six days post-op, and I don't think I regret it. The day I was dismissed from the hospital, they stopped my blood pressure and diabetic medications. That's huge! But since then, my sugar has been low, and my pressure has been low once or twice, which is weird. I'm just wondering if all my problems will reverse or if my body is trying to find my new homeostasis. I've been on liquids only for nearly a month now, and that's getting old. But no soreness, and I didn't experience any gas pain at all, even in the hospital, probably due to my unique circumstances. I've had a bit of trouble sleeping and have been a bit lightheaded. Lastly, I thought getting in protein would be a breeze, but in reality, it's far more challenging than I thought. I never knew how much I truly disliked protein shakes until I had to drink 3-5 daily for 30 days. I look forward to eating again, even if it is mush. Anything not sweet, anything I can use my jaws on, LOL 😂. Liquid Diet Weight Loss: -27 lbs (2 weeks) and Post Surgery Weight Loss: -4 lbs (4 days)

Sleeve to DS
Scorpio_Qveen_21 replied to rlmontgomery's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had gerd & was able to get the conversion from sleeve to DS. My surgery was November 18, 2022. I had 2 bouts of acids reflux the night of surgery but nothing since. Also, my surgeon prescribed Protonix to be taken daily for 3 months even if I don’t have any reflux issues. As far as recovery…. My stomach is still bloated from all the air they pumped in me prior to surgery. I also had my gallbladder taken out as well, so my stomach is a bit sore. Sleeping with a pillow pressed against my stomach helps me sleep really well. I’m able to get in my protein & water with no issues thus far. My body is tired, but I feel pretty good overall. -

This is my first post! I was sleeved 11/11 and just started the puree stage (my program calls it "smooth textures") on Sunday - yesterday was the first day I managed to hit both my protein and fluid goals, which was really exciting. I managed to eat 4oz of refried beans and hot sauce in the morning, but in the evening could only finish half of the ricotta and egg white scramble I made, so the rest was made up via protein shakes. I'm so happy to be able to add some savory foods back to my diet - I don't have the biggest sweet tooth and I was getting so sick of the taste of protein shakes last week. Right now fluids are still giving me the most trouble, but I've been having better luck using the Owala water bottle with the built-in straw and it hasn't been giving me trouble with extra air. I don't know if it's because I don't swallow as I'm drinking, I still hold all the fluid in my mouth for a second because I'm afraid of taking too big of a drink no matter how I'm drinking it, but I'm glad I can still use my favorite water bottle so far. -

I was switching to the protein water late in the day, because some are just to artificially sweet for me. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Advice needed: How to do Thanksgiving
Wrenna replied to heartofmercury's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm three months out from mini bypass and had a Thanksgiving dinner with friends a few days ago. My plate was about a third turkey, and then a bite or two of everything else. It worked out really well - I felt like I was able to enjoy the meal along with everyone else. I didn't bother tracking that meal because I religiously track everything else, and I knew that if I missed my protein goals or went over my calories that day, it wasn't going to be by much. We're also having our own (very toned down) Thanksgiving and I'm planning on doing the same thing - a decent serving of turkey, and then a taste of everything else. It helps that I'm still pretty food... ambivalent? and that I'm not really interested in sweet things since the surgery. -
I’m in week 4 and it’s still difficult to drink all the water I need a day. Also I haven’t been able to drink the protein because I know I will not be able to drink it all. Anyone have any tips as to what y’all do to keep up? I have my water bottle with me all day and I take sips throughout the day but It’s hard to drink it all still.

Food Before and After Photos

Vegemite & marmite are similar in that their main ingredient is yeast extract (from barley & wheat) but they’ve some other different ingredients. Vegemite has a much stronger taste & is thicker & harder to spread. Promite has vegetable protein as it’s main ingredient. It is a softer spread & has a slightly sweeter & more mellow taste. All three are good sources of vitamin B & generally considered healthier spreads. The main problem is you tend to slather butter on with them. LOL! I’m a Promite girl but I did enjoy Marmite when I was a child which my paternal grandmother always had. Vegemite is too strong - even the smell irritates me. Yeah, not a good Aussie about that. 😁 -

I am one week into the pre-op and these protein shakes are tasting so sweet I can't hardly do it! I have another week of this until surgery and then a few weeks after. I go tomorrow for my pre-surgery appointment so hopefully they can help me find some that are not so sweet ughhhhhh -
Hi all! I bought the LiquaCel unflavored protein in preparation for my surgery on 12/2/22. I was hoping to be able to add them to broths or soups in order to get more protein during the liquid phase, however, they are really sweet to me (no flavor but sweet) and I'm pre-op so I'm concerned that they will be even more sweet after the surgery. Does anyone have a recommendation for an unflavored protein, even if it's powder that isn't sweet?

Advice needed: How to do Thanksgiving
kcuster83 replied to heartofmercury's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am no veteran but when I find myself in group settings with lots of food I just go for the protein first and maybe a bite or 2 of something else. I try to eye ball a few ounces of the proteins and just stop eating when I get the slightest bit of full. (I am pretty good at eyeballing, I eyeball then weigh at home to keep myself tested. lol) So far this process has worked for me. Good luck, you can do it. -

Hi! officially post op day 4, I had a rough go of it in the beginning, the day after surgery I wasn’t able to hold anything down, vomitted twice which they say is normal, the next day was much better, pain went down and was able to hold everything down, but didn’t meet the required amount of ounces to drink to go home, so had to stay another day but was able to reach that goal and officially home, thank god! But still get nauseous alittle bit here and there, gonna start drinking the protein shakes, I wanna find out when I can start eating sugar free popsicles because they said the cold can cause spasms so not to start too early, anyone have any info on that? -
Dumping or lactose intolerance?
kcuster83 replied to Courtney*'s topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Seems more of a lactose issue than dumping. Protein shakes are very low sugars and fats to cause dumping, although nothing is impossible. Also, you don't really get into your symptoms. With dumping you usually get hot like flashes, sweaty, racing heart, and sick. Try dairy free protein shakes and see how you do. Good luck, you got this! -
How to handle vacation?
summerseeker replied to qtdoll's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I always over prepare for holidays. I always overthink things. Even now one year out, I have a pile of non-refrigerator snacks ready to go in my suitcase. Nuts, cheese dippers, mug shots and protein bars. If you are really stuck have a latte or even a glass of milk. It will boost your energy levels for a little while -
I agree, it is likely head hunger also. A few other things you can look at is to ensure you are managing your physical hun ger with the sleeve as much as possible. Please consider the following the options: (1) eat solid food that needs chewing, helps to reduce hunger (2) 50% meals are protein based, of a solid form also to help reduce hunger (3) Be well nourished with nutrition have a shake with extra protein powder and a MV for weight loss surgery (4) avoid looking for fullness Hope that helps Helen

Post op tale …. first two weeks
BlessedMomma91 replied to KimA-GA's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am doing really well. The first week was relentless and I was miserable. I am kinda adjusting to my new normal now. I was allowed to start a very limited selection of soft foods yesterday along with my 2 protein shakes. I am still super nervous about it. I can't seem to tell when I'm full. Doc said only 2 tbsp max once a day for now so I stop there (or before that) even though i don't feel any different than before eating it. I'm definitely still learning my body. I am happy with my progress so far. How are you feeling today? Hoping you're still improving. Btw my name is Kim too! 😀 HW: 311 First day of 2wk Pre-op diet: 280 Day of surgery (11/7): 273 Today: 257 -
Dumping or lactose intolerance?
Arabesque replied to Courtney*'s topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Milk always caused me problems but never yoghurt too. It’s because the bacteria used to make yoghurt reduces much of the lactose & therefore fewer or no side effects & cottage cheese has less lactose so you may be able to eat more without it affecting you. Try switching out your milk for a lactose free or non dairy version & same with other higher lactose products & see if that helps. Also, if you still have shakes try a plant protein powder instead. For many the difficulty with lactose is only temporary. If this is your problem I hope it’s temporary for you too. -
Dumping or lactose intolerance?
Courtney* replied to Courtney*'s topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
About 9 grams of protein. I’ve had other milk based things and it seems to be hot or miss. Milk drinks make me nauseous but yogurt and cottage cheese has been fine. It was just odd given the short period and ingredients. -
Night time and my fat brain wants to eat.
mark454 replied to Leo segovia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can relate so much to eating at night. With my old eating habits, it was normal for me to wake up in the middle of the night and eat. I would sometimes eat a whole meal from leftovers. Currently I am 59 days out ( 8 weeks ), and that fat monkey on my shoulder is trying so hard to get me back into old habits. I find myself eating at night again, but thankfully I can't eat much anymore. But still, it's always been a horrible habit of mine. I do try most times to grab something smarter than dinner leftovers, like a banana, or a protein shake. I was surprised to see you were still on pureed food. But I know every doc is different. My doc said post surgery diet was to be 3 days clear liquid, 3 days full liquid, 3 days pureed, then solids as tolerated. I started slow with the solids. At 8 weeks now, there isn't much I haven't eaten ( no junk foods, sweets, or sugary sodas ). But now it's getting scary. I mean, I can only eat so much, but like I heard someone else say, my fat brain wants to eat when I'm not hungry. Eating just because something tastes good. Horrible old habits. I am losing weight ( 33 lbs in 59 days ), but I feel like I can do better. I must somehow convince myself that we should eat to live, not live to eat. I know I am addicted to food and the battlefield is in my brain. It's a daily struggle, but I know I can do this, and so can you ! -
Dumping or lactose intolerance?
learn2cook replied to Courtney*'s topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Mmm maybe? How much protein was there? Since you are on soft foods maybe you can narrow things down by trying a low sugar low fat Greek yogurt. ( on second thought, stick to doctors orders) There’s various degrees of lactose intolerance too. It could even be your body reacting to soft foods vs. liquids. I have found that the dumping can be lessened or controlled with mild exercise and combining with protein. I probably wouldn’t be testing too much, your body is still deeply healing. As always you should talk with your team if you aren’t sure. They see more people and know what to look for, and what to avoid or enhance. -
Laura My calories are anywhere between 450 and 750. It just depends on the day. Yes I’m on solid food. I can eat almost anything but a lot of things don’t taste that good anymore. And some things make me nauseous. Luckily I still love chicken! Protein is sometimes hard to hit but water intake is going well. My husband wonders if I’m eating enuf also. Im just taking it day by day and do what I can each day. I go in for my six week checkup next week. Hopefully I can find out what I need to improve on.

I just experienced my first adverse reaction to food that felt like could be dumping. Im a week and a half out from bypass and on puréed food. I had the tummy issues and nauseous and dizziness and anxiety reaction. But it only lasted maybe 15 minutes. It was a milk based protein snack with only 4g added sugar (8g total sugar) and 2 g fat so I’m not sure how that would be dumping. I’ve had some issues with lactose since surgery but not to this extent. Does this sound like dumping?
