Hello Melissa, Topdowndog, and luvmy3boyz.... I am also an October 16th bandster and doing pretty good on the fourth day out... I was a little weak today, but I think it was from being on the clear liquid diet and needing something a little more. I had a yogurt smoothie and a bowl of cream of wheat and I feel much better... I haven't had any problems with gas pains and was lucky not to get a sore throat... My throat would get dry and hoarse but that was about it... I only got the nausea feeling once, but I did get the hiccups alot, but a couple sips of Water would take care of that.... I am very pleased with my progress so far and I'm looking forward to a healthier way of life... Good luck and many blessings to all of the October bandsters and keep us posted on your journey...

High Protein Food Choices--When You Really Don't Like Shakes.....
delta_girl replied to Texarkolina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still fairly new at 6 or so weeks, but I like edamame, Ostrim, salmon, pb2, low fat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, split pea soup (11g protein per .5 cup), boiled egg whites. -
I am on day 9 of a 20 day preop diet consisting of protein shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt, broth, and SF jello and popsicles. I've lost 13 lbs which is great. I'm trying really hard not to complain because it could be worse and I could be on full liquids or only protein drinks, but...I'm on burnout. I'd kill for just a salad, a cucumber, something with substance and crunch! In November, I kicked a 15 year habit of smoking cold turkey. During that time I munched on baby pickles when I got a craving for one. When I traveled I ate sunflower seeds. I thought i was over it, but now that I can have very little I want a cigeratte, a big Dr Pepper, and the right side of the menu from the burger place down the street! (ok, i really want the whole menu) I don't know why today is so hard, but I've just stayed in bed and slept since yesterday afternoon. I'm fighting caffine, nicotine, and every food craving imaginable. Any suggestions? How did you make it through?

What do YOU eat in a typical day?
JillianMarie replied to JillianMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's been almost 2 months, I have been very confused as far as post op directions because my surgeon gave me the clear to eat solids at 5 weeks, and was very strict at first with his post-op directions, but it seemed to progress very quickly. There aren't any local nutritionists that have experience with the sleeve, i have checked into it. I have even checked with the local weight loss surgery centers, and they only perform gastric bypass and lap-band, they have yet to perform the sleeve. I went to two different gastroenterologists seeking their opinions and looking for post- surgery follow up care, and they didn't really understand what I was there for. They said i was fine, and that I should be okay to eat what I am comfortable with eating, and that my stomach will let me know if i have trouble with any foods. One doctor told me to take new foods slow and cautiously, but at 5 weeks to introduce them in small amounts and that I should be okay with them and that the major healing has probably already occurred and my risk for leaks would be very low by that point. At this point the only foods that i have problems with are green Beans, and acidic foods or high fat foods (with the exception of Peanut Butter, it seems to be the only high fat food that agrees well with me AND keeps me full for most of the day). At times I wish i had used a different surgeon whom I would have follow up care with and had better outlines of everything from the start. I have been told different things by everyone. I can always go back to my "safe foods"- yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, and Protein shakes, and try to pass a few more weeks or a month by to give more healing time, as long as I keep myself busy I can distract myself from thinking about eating other foods. I seem to have a fairly high metabolism, after surgery i consumed quite a bit more than most people in the way of calories (around 900 a day through protein shakes) and still lost pretty fast. If I can aim at about 1200-1400 a day, I can slowly get to my goal, then maintain at around 1800-2000/day. -

Jillian, I am right there with you. I am not as far out as you, I am 5 weeks, but I feel I can eat way more than most people are posting. food seems to go down a lot easier than most people talk about. I am on vacation, and yesterday I ate the following with no issue: B: 1/2 vanilla yogurt with sprinkle of granola, two 1 inch Water melon cubes, 1 serving spoonful of scrabled eggs L: 3 large shrimp, 1 bite mac& cheese (had to try it!) S: 2oz grilled chix; small triange of chees and 2 crackers; 1 half dollar size crocquette D: 2 1/2 inch crab cake few edamame 1 steamed dumpling (again, I had to try it: Emeril's Tchoup chop restaurant) I can eat a whole small Wendy's chili without too much problem, but I am super full afterwards. I can eat an entire slightly larger than palm sized chix breast (I have found that it definitely needs to be super moist though) 2 eggs poached or over easy, but not much else with them, I haven't tried beef yet and I haven't done any raw veggies yet. I am dissapointed somewhat, but actually kind of happy that I was able to eat semi-normal on vacation, and be part of the "group". I didn't feel left out or angry that they could eat things I couldn't. When they ordered the banana creme pie at Emeril's it didn't even bug me. I didn't want any. Same with the gelato sundaes every night (although I did have a small scoop of mango sorbet one night when I didn't have much for dinner. And I did have a scoop of hazelnut gelato once and very shortly after experienced my first bought of "dumping". Sweaty, nauseous, no throwing up, but close). I plan on doing the 5 day pouch test when I get back to kind of de-carb myself, but I am finding a few carbs more carbs make all the difference in my attitude. Helps with the constipation, and general overall mood. -

I had surgery on 1-21-2013! First day I couldn't even finish one bottle of Water. But I remember people saying it gets easier everyday. And it's true everyday it gets easier . Ate 2 oz of Greek yogurt no problem and had some water too. And to top it off I am down 19 lbs since my 7 day preop diet. Everyday when I weight myself I say to my self "I will never weight this much again" Couldn't be happier! Even cooked my family 3 meals! Pork tenderloin, coffee crumb cake and turkey meet balls for lunch!!!

Need Help at Night
SkyeBlu replied to Marissa's Mom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You say that you are good in the am and the afternoon...Take a look at when you are hungry in the eveing, is it when you are sitting down to watch tv, is this a time you would normally munch and munch? A big one for me was bordom or stress eating simply because I could. I realized most of the time I wasn't really hungry but had the munchies from years of habit. There are time you can be honestly hungry though (I know I do get that way) to test if I am munchie hungry or in need of sustinance I drink a bunch of Water if that doesn't do it then I am hungry and I have a small treat/meal like a yogurt, a really yummy chocolate protien shake, or 1/2 of one of my favorite Protein bars etc. Also, if you are genuinely getting hungry quicker on some nights and not others look at what you ate, I know some foods go through me quicker and I crash if I inadvertanly ate too much carbs. There is so much to learn it is amazing! And by the way....AWESOME on the 22lbs lost!!! If you keep up that pace you could be down over 100lbs by your bandaversary! Keep up the great work! -

Two Weeks... Well Technically 13 Days!
dwbrown1978 commented on dwbrown1978's blog entry in dwbrown1978's Blog
That is a GREAT coincidence!!! I can't believe how similar our surgeries are. As for advice, I guess I would say that I am a big planner. I spent the past few weeks leading up to my liquid diet being proactive. I first started subbing one meal (breakfast) for a protein shake and then eating two regular meals. After about 2 weeks of that, I started subbing 2 meals a day for a protein shake and switching my last meal to low carb. I was doing that for about 10 days and then shifted to my full liquid diet (with sugar free jello and/or 1 greek yogurt per day) fairly easily. I say do what you can. I got this advice from my surgeon (along with his nurse and also my nutritionist agreed): If you can make two of your meals per day a protein shake, then eat one meal low carb (only carbs from veggies). Try to make your protein lowfat. It will still accomplish the goal of shrinking your liver and you should drop a few pounds. Try to make your meal about 400 calories or less. That one meal plus the two protein shakes will still make your calories around 1000 or less for the day. I don't know if it will help you, but it has been a lifesaver for me. And if I absolutely cannot make it until the 11th (no food at all the day before surgery) without eating real food, I know I can eat something as long as it is pure lowcarb. Good luck to you on journey. I wish you the best. I hope you will keep in touch with your progress, because it will be nice to see someone who's so similar to me going through the same process. -
I have the same fear. I started solids yesterday and so far I have eaten a half a chicken breast for lunch and another half for dinner. My other meals are my old reliables - yogurt and hummus. I have to say, the chicken felt no different and was actually very filling. I was at a restaurant for a business dinner last night and caused quite a stir that I didnt clean my plate as normal and did not request a doggie bag, oh well. It was actually a waste of food but I knew that if I brought it home it could be trouble.

Does Anyone Feel Like They Eat The Same Things In Excess
cheryl2586 replied to goingfoit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat greek yogurt for breakfast or a protein bar. The pure protein are about 180 to 200 calories but they have sugar alcohols that can cause stomach upset and gas. I limit those to about 1 a week. I eat tuna, boca burgers, black bean burgers, cottage cheese, low sodium V-8 because I dont always eat my veggies, I make black bean casserole. Edamame with sea salt, sometimes but rarely chicken salad and I do not do low fat or fat free anything because the amount of fat I eat in a day is not too much. I also buy any of the pic sweet veggies in the single serving size. Protein shakes I am done with. I don't think at a certain point you should still drink them. It is liquid calories and they do not keep you full. I eat eggs for breakfast too with a small amount of ketchup to help them go down. I hardly eat any meat because it doesnt like me. There are many things you can eat you have to try them. I thought I would never eat tofu but I love it. Sauteed in cabbage it is so good with lots of different seasoning such as dill, seasoning salt, cracked pepper. Packed with protein and taste like whatever you cook it with. -
Surely soft steamed vegies go down? With maybe just a bit of butter and salt and pepper - yum. Or mash them in with potato. I'm all for "normal" diets with the band and I can do it but for many I think the reality is a staple stock of moist foods that work. But there's a LOT you can eat within this description. Have you tried, for example, cooking other meats in the slow cooker with liquids. I dont think I'll be eating too many lamb chops straight off the barbecue in my future, but a steak cooked in the slow cooker in cream of mushroom soup - easy to eat. Curries and casseroles cooked on low heat for long times - fantastic. Oatmeal can be as soft as you need and its fantastic made into bircher muesli - soak oats, seeds, and some cut up dried fruits in apple juice overnight, in the morning stir in some natural yogurt - a lovely mushie breakfast. You just need to be creative in the kitchen, knowing what to do with basic ingredients makes banded life a lot easier.

I get my daily Protein from meats, fish, Greek yogurt, cheese & nuts. I don't drink Protein Shakes unless I am on liquids from a fill. I consume 60 - 70g of protein daily. Glad you like the Peanut Butter yogurt Grammy.
-
I use chobani yogurt as a snack. Generally if the yogurt is flavored I may add in 1/2 scoop of unflavored protein. Also, really good is plain yogurt with a tbsp of peanut butter for a snack, or PB cookie flavored protein powder.

Counting Sugar grams instead of Carbs?
Lakelady replied to SKCUNNINGHAM's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I don't track anything except protein. I just add up my protein mentally through the day (egg 7, greek yogurt 20, chicken 10 etc). And then I eat whatever else-usually healthy but sometimes not-never very much. I cannot handle much without feeling quite sick. I have no nutritionalist visits because I traveled for surgery. I'm pretty much on my own, with my surgeon's instruction book and this forum. I literally have no idea how many Kcal I have in a day because I despise food tracking (altho I know it works to lose weight). Right now I'm actually trying to eat more to prevent anymore weight loss! If I start to regain I'll have to track more to get back on track. -
I did not like baby food. I pureed: Soup, chicken salad, egg salad, Wendy's chili. I also had yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, hummus. I still drank 1 Protein shake a day to help make sure I got in my Protein.

Questions to the ones who Had GASTRIC BYPASS!
spdmonkeymama replied to Missbeauty16's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm still waiting for approval and my date too.. I'm not "freaking out" exactly but the thoughts have been in the back of my mind.. But Monday I started a 2 wk preop diet the doc wants me to do for 4 weeks and it's not going so bad.. I have a very small selection I can chose 6 serv a day from.. But no meat.. Drinking all my Protein.. I figure I quit cigz cold turkey because I want this that bad.. I got this! And I feel like reading these forums have helped me wrap my head more around it already.. WE got this! Munky I had a very similar pre op. 4 Protein shakes a day 6 servings of : yogurt, applesauce, sf pudding, oatmeal, v8 juice. Then unlimited non starchy veggies and 80 Oz fluids. As far as gas pains go I had some of the worst. They got stuck in my ribs and didn't want to move. I am now dealing with some major back pain that has sidelined me the last 2 days. I'm 4 weeks post op As far as hunger goes I'm dealing with a lot of head hunger and wanting to push myself faster to healing. I've been allowed to resume working out slowly. But I have to consume more than 800 calories a day to workout. With the pain I'm not getting in nearly as much as I need. Sent from my SGH-M919 using the BariatricPal App -
I've got a grocery list started. My dietician recommends crystal light, propel, calorie free or sugar free drinks, broth Soups, and sugar free popsicles. These are "free" foods that you can have in unlimited amounts. Other foods like gatorade, reg. Jello, popsicles, light yogurt, or Protein shakes I can have in limited amounts because of the sugar. I'm not real excited about doing this, but the nurse expained to me that the longer you can do this diet, the better it will be for your surgery. Your liver will get smaller and be out of the way for the laproscopic surgery. I'm going to try my best! I'm going to the grocery store tonight.

Some general nutrition questions
PdxMan replied to BigDaddyJoe's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Well ... to me, this begs the bigger question of just what we are willing to do to be successful in our journey. So, let me start off by saying, I'm not judging anybody, we all have our own journeys and our reasons for following that path. OK, that being said, the foods that you talk about are the processed, out of the box variety where you don't have much control over the content. It has been these types of products which attributed to my obesity. Bottom line for me, is I prepare pretty much all of my foods from scratch. Just started making my own yogurt after I took a long look at the ingredients. HOLY COW! When did yogurt become junk food? I missed that one. I'll have the occasional Protein shake (Premier), which I approve of the ingredient list. I do have salad dressings which are higher in fat than I would like, but I gotta have my blue cheese. I didn't get the sleeve to restrict my menu, just my portions. When I prepare all of my food, I know what is going in and I can control the amounts. I know a lot of people are going to jump up and down saying, "It takes too long ... I don't know how to cook healthy meals ... It's only me eating and I don't want it to go to waste." Here is what I say to that ... I am a parent of two young kids who is a Scout leader and work well over 50 hours a week. I also have other side projects which take my time. All of the recipes I cook with are available on the internet with instructions. I cook huge portions and toss the leftovers into jelly jars which I take out on my way to work or pull out for dinner. You can have total control over what you put into your body. If you do this, then you don't really need to worry about eating the one-off packaged meal. -
I'm 3 days out of surgery and have drinkable yogurt on the list after day 4. Can anyone recommend a good brand that offers high protein in small quantities?

Thank you all of you!! I seem to be going back and forth on the 1lb. Yea I am on regular food but I really watch it. They said I was a fast healer and if I am comfortable eating it then its fine but be mindful about it. I couldn't eat a hamburger but more like salmon and some salad. I eat some crackers and suck on them to get them mooshy. But I also am on soups and yogurt. But I am proud of one thing, NO CAFFEINE or REGULAR POP!!! Good Luck to all of you!! And THANK YOU AGAIN

I love Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal. I put 1/2 cup on top of my yogurt and strawberries.
